Lip balm before anything is actually a really great tip. I was putting my retinol on without doing this step first and it definitely started irritating my lips. Putting Vaseline on before my retinol was a small, but important step to stop that.

I appreciate how you showed us a PM routine while you still had breakouts.
Gives me a lot of hope that, as a senior resident in dermatology, no matter how fastidious I am with my skincare routine, my skin will still misbehave once in a while.
    Thank you. 😇

Hey Dr. Sam! Thank for a great, entertaining and informational video. Two questions:
    1. Do you wash your hands with soap and water between products?
    2. How long do you wait between products before applying the next one?
Hope you see this, thanks again :)

I appreciate your candor about your own skin care, especially showing us your bare face.. You look splendid, alluring *without makeup*, and that inspires me to be more diligent about taking care of my skin.. I'm a male, obviously, and the tuition you provide on your channel has been most helpful. I even purchased, on your recommendation, Burt's Bees Red Dahlia tinted lip balm just to add a touch of color to my lips; and I really like it.. Thanks.

Good point on people who use a lot of serums that have one ingredient!! Like with The Ordinary, a lot of people love it because they’re affordable, but if you get a serum that have like 5 or 6 of those things combined, and it costs like let’s say $80 then it’s technically cheaper than The ordinary individual serums. Too much to keep track of. I have enough to worry about! Lol 😂

I'm so grateful for your videos and education! I've had the worst oily & acne-prone skin my whole life, and have tried everything (acne creams, acne patches, oil blotting sheets, etc) - until I decided to throw in the towel and start from the ground up with a multi-step skincare routine. I always thought it was too big a hassle or too fussy, but I'm so glad I did. I'm 3 months into a ~7-step skincare routine, and it has honestly been LIFECHANGING! My skin is so much younger, radiant, and acne-free that I can't even believe it! I'm still working up to the ~10-steps (with more advanced elements like serums), but I can't believe it took me until my 30's to do this. It was a lot of research, and Dr. Ellis' videos on oily skin products, order to apply products, etc were pivotal. Thank you so much for all you do, you changed my life!

I have double cleansed for decades but didn’t call it that. It was just removing my makeup then cleansing my face. I got in the habit in my teens when doing theater. In those days, I sometimes had to do a triple cleanse to get it all off.
I changed my opinion of toners, which was that they caused more problems than they were worth, when I first started using K Beauty products. I use several toners, essences, and toner essences for the hydration they provide my skin. I know the effect is temporary, but using them has solved a decades long problem of skin dehydration and the barrier issues that go along with it.
Like you, I always put on a lip balm and eye cream before any retinoid. (It’s a tip I got from another YT derm.) I haven’t had any migration problems into those sensitive areas since I started the practice. I still have sensitivity issues with retinoids around my mouth and nose. I really can’t use them there, but I’ve found that applying a bakuchiol cream in that area offers some of the benefits of retinoids without the pain the retinoids cause. I also do the moisturizer sandwich technique because my skin is extremely sensitive. The sensitivity is why I haven’t been able to go beyond using retinoids three times a week.
Some things that have always baffled dermatologists about my skin are that it can’t handle using the same products daily and some petrochemicals are a big problem-no mineral oil or petrolatum for me. Those are both easily solved by alternating similar products and reading ingredients lists to check for the things my skin can’t handle including salicylates, any form of lanolin, fragrances (including essential oils and terpenes), and others that I can’t think of at the moment but I recognize when I read them. I’m never content with having to alternate products and try to use a single product daily, but I’ve not been able to tolerate that in 50 years of skincare.
One last point, I applaud you for showing us your skin as it is without apology. I wish I were that brave when I was younger. I had a horrible outbreak of cystic acne on the day I had to do a photo shoot and am still embarrassed by those images.

I do use Tretinoin, but only a few nights in the week. I also use Vitamin C in the day under my moisturizer. I use AHA some nights. I go by the rule thinner to thicker. I use occlusive moisturizers over my actives since I have dry skin.

What a great, quick review of the general rules of layering but a confirmation that there's no data that one HAS to do it a certain way. Those tips about moisturizing before or sandwiching to help tret inflammation is so helpful; I've been stuck at every 3rd day & realize I could fix it that way. Question: how often do you suggest a final "slug" occlusive layer if there is any peeling happening? Keep that short term? Thanks!!!❤🌺🙏

The theory behind the sink or shower really just comes down to how you’re treating your skin. People just tend to irritate their skin more in the shower when using water that is either too hot or cold or aggressively scrubbing/washing (especially if your shower head is high pressured). As long as you’re being gentle, you can cleanse your skin wherever you’d like!

Wow, my routine is almost exactly like yours except the brands are different. I use the cetaphil hydrating cleanser, naturium salicylic acid exfoliant, and the naturium vitamin c serum, and the naturium azelaic acid emulsion, and the crave PM moisturizer. Then the naturium spf

Why can’t you put a cream directly under the eye? That skin is the thinnest and feels like it would love that extra moisture.
Loved this video (as always) by the way!

You definitely can! But some people are prone to developing milia in that area with thicker creams.

Thank you for this video. Super helpful! What is your opinion about lactic acid being used before retinol?

  • @DtlaDaisy

Thanks Dr. Ellis! I have oily/acne prone/sensitive skin (so much PIH ) and I was wondering when was the best time to use/best way to layer the "acne treatment" (benozyl peroxide or salicylic acid) and then skin treatment serum (retinol or lactic/glycolic acid)

    • @Budgetmeright

I personally use salicylic acid/glycolic acid during my morning routine and finish with sunscreen. I use retinol every other night.I don't use benzoyl peroxide anymore but if I had to I would put it during nights that I don't use retinol. Hope this helps!

I always used my BP in the morning after applying any serum and sunscreen. I use a serum type sunscreen with SPF 50 by LaRoche Posy. The BP really prevents my skin from becoming too oily during the day. I only put it on my T zone and acne prone areas. I use the retinA at night under a light layer of moisturizer. I wash with a glycolic acid cleanser about twice a week, rather than using glycolic acid gel or cream, which makes my skin red and dry. Otherwise I use a very mild cleanser, I really like Vanicream gentle foaming cleanser and it’s priced right.

I definitely let an over saturated cotton round soak micellar water into my (waterproof) mascara for like a whole minute and it doesn’t get like half of it off. Especially on the underside of the lashes where there’s less contact. I guess it depends on the mascara you use?

I was told to do that but sometimes am confused if I really have to.

I've had great results using OBAGI Clear with trentenoin every evening, starting last fall as I'd turned SO spotty. My skin is what I'd call "85% even". A bottle of Clear lasts about 9 months.

An informative video, but so many products! I`m too tried in the evening to layer all of them and wait for each one to sink into my skin! I do double cleanse, then retinol, lip balm and after 10 minutes I put on moisturiser(when I can be bothered) I do use a facial oil, once a month for a week, but that week I do not use the retinol. Keep up the good and informative videos.

This video is about the order to apply products. Even if eye cream is not a skincare essential, it’s still a part of many peoples’ routines so I think it’s important to demonstrate where it would fit.

I have rosacea & use a prescription Azelaic acid gel 15%,. When would I use it in my routine? I only use it once a day in the morning. I use e.l.f holy hydration cleansing, gel, e.l.f. Holy hydration toner, the azelaic acid then e.l.f holy hydration moisturizer. Your comments would be appreciated.
