I bought a D7 earlier this week and unfortunately it’s not completely compatible with my wife’s Nissan. Special functions require AutoAuth. This worked on my Ram, but specifically not with the Nissan. Picked up an Autel MaxiCOM MK808S today and works like a charm. Very similar price to the D7 as well with a few more features.

The Thinktool has debunked far as functions vs prIce. D8 wins. The Maxisys cost around $1,300 which brings more functions. But Xtool has another level scan tool in the same price range as Maxisys and does the same things, but $200-$300 less.

I've been waiting for this since you did the D7. I AM AN ADVANCED DIY MECHANIC, and have been going crazy trying to figure out what my next tool will be. My Bosch 1300 served me well, but it's time to go bi-directional. It's mind-boggling. The manufactures, the models, the levels, the upgrades... there's no end to it. I don't want to cut myself short and I don't want to pay for stuff I'll never use. I drew my line at the J-box. I'm pretty much down to the D8 and the Thinktool Pros... which will soon be replaced by the Thinktool Master2. But if I go with that, then there's the question of who to buy it from. It's a shady world out there. Thank you for all you do. You're a beacon in the dark.

I ended up with the Topdon Phoenix Plus. It's been a great tool. I paid just over a grand. This tool has taught me a lot. Mostly, how little I actually know. Now that I'm learning I see how important a scope is, so that's next. I'll probably go with Topdon again because I now trust the quality and they seem to be the most affordable. I don't make a living with these tools, so I feel like these are the top end of the DIY scale and bottom of the more advanced equipment. Kinda crazy to spend more for tools than I do for my vehicles, but I enjoy doing this stuff. Eventually I hope to make it a lucrative hobby and at least get something back. Good luck.

My A30M with AnyScan doesn't take forever. If you use it on a slow phone, or tablet, yes. It creeps on my old Samsung E 9.6 tablet. If you have a fast phone (Samsung Galaxy S9 in my case, older but fast), it's much better and is usable with Windows My Phone and Samsung DeX, which allows you to operate it from a desktop or laptop through the phone.
I've spent much more money on scanning programs for my computers over the years, but they were not bi-directional. The A20M is a good affordable option on the way to paying for a D8 a little later on. It paid for itself in less than a month working on neighbors' vehicles.
    Thanks for posting these videos.

Another great review ADM and I am an advanced DIY mechanic and love watching your honest reviews. I like this type video on how to use these tools. I hope you do more this. My Blue Driver works OK but it’s doesn’t have the advanced features needed to maintain the newer cars. Bi-Directional control is a game changer and needed to fix / diagnosis the newer cars. It’s sad that there are so many computers on these cars nowadays. One of my cars is a Pontiac vibe which is a twin to the matrix. The dome light is controlled by a door pin switch. On my 2003 suburban the done light is controlled by the door latch with has gears inside the latch to determine if it’s open or closed! So much complexity for something as simple as door open indicator. Keep doing these great videos and I try to never miss your videos as I’m learning new things/tips. Some more customer problem stories would be fun too as people need to understand the stress mechanics are under dealing with customers and sometimes the dealership owners! 8-). God Bless and I’m so glad you listened to your wise wife and started this channel!

So here is the deal, the A30M gives free lifetime updates, now with a DIY retired mechanic that is key. Now on a Highlander 2014 it can do a diag test and see all the modules. The Bidirectional does work for the needed items in many of the system and works fine. Doing this on an old tablet, yes you need to download the software which is big. Now on the 2006 Caravan you need to go into each of the modules individually, again activation is possible as I was able to activate certain things in the sliding door. While I would love to invest into the D8 tool that would be overkill for me and the updates you must pay for every 3 years. For the added extra that you get like the key programming, well keys are a pain in the ass anyway and let the dealer or key shop do that task. In my view as long as I can activate a purge valve , shut off tank valve fuel pump I can test at that point voltage and amperage when I activate. It also let me see the o2 sensors on the highlander, have not checked caravan just yet but did activate engine fans on both cars fuel pump on both too.

How does this work on Honda Accord Hybird touring models 2018 through 2022. I see it’s more capable ( more options) for Toyota over Honda not sure why? Does this have the J2534 pass through and will this do key programming for the accord hybrid 2020 through 2022? Doesn’t key programming require writing to the ECU so if it doesn’t support J2534 I don’t see how It can do the programming?

The Xtool series has a terrible live data playback function: I have a problem with my BMW suddenly bucking at speed and stalling at Idle. It happens infrequently. Probably every 1 to 2 hours of driving. No codes are thrown. live data is what I need so I bought this scan tool. I bought the D8 model. I finally have the bucking event recorded after about 45 minutes of recording. I stop the car and save the data for review. I start the playback thinking I can go to the end and see the parameters, but you can’t scroll or go fast forward. You have to sit and wait until the end. This is crazy stupid if you just recorded almost an hour of data to catch an event that you waited for. The cds (recording) file is proprietary when I try and open it to view, its encoded. You can do the export data and the data will be saved as text file (CSV) that can be opened it Excel, but when you stop recording after about 30 minutes of collection. It may not be able to write it to the internal storage because of its size. I sit and wait a minute or two for it to respond. It has no progress meter. I suspected my fuel pump is the issue. I recorded the fuel pump parameters, but I can’t add any engine data parameters like engine speed and peddle position in with the fuel pump because they are in a different live data category: engine vs fuel delivery. This is just plain crazy. All parameters should be able to be chosen from all groups for the maximum of 8 that can be displayed/saved. These are major problems with the live playback and could be solved easily in an update to the software but who knows when that will happen. Shame on all the TH-camrs that are pushing this tool but say nothing about this major flaw.

I thought the obdeleven was a great scan tool even thiugh theres things i cant do and i always thought only dealers can with their 10k scan tools like key reprograming and freaking battery coding.?.?.?.?!
I have some very conplicated abs/tpms/ electrical codes on my car my scanner cant handle and i thought i needed the d8 cuz i was gonna program a new key too.
It sounds like the d7 can still do everything i need it too but im not good with technologie so maybe since the d8 simplifies it more its worth the extra 300$.
Idk i dont work alot on cars but just a new key is 300 thru dealer and i can get a used one on ebay 20 so saving 280$ but it sounds like the d7 can do it.
And i thought i wanted blueyooth one as the choice seemed so clear but now its not clear at all.
I dont even know if i need the d8 and dont know if the wireless has enough pros. And the sales running out and walmart doesnt specify when it ends😫. And i cant really afford it but somethings wrong with my car and i cant figure it out so😩😫🥺😫😩😩😫
Someone please tell me which one too buy and ill click buy. Idec im just indecisive.
Oddly enough i like the desighn of the d7 more. I like the ridgid frame and the smaller stature but i also like capability and plan too do long coding. But i do hate the round cheap look of the grab part on the d8 but cant be too picky with quality...

TBH the A30/D/M would probably be fine as I'm willing to have some patience in exchange for a lower price. Mostly looking for bi-directional ability that the BlueDriver and OBDLink MX+ don't currently have, like TPMS programming, key programming, and other controls for diagnostics. I can see a D7 and D8 would be able to help a great deal. I started deep into car diagnoses when I got a chronic, dreaded CHECK VSC error on the dashboard. That took me into MAF, throttle body, short-term and long-term fuel trim, air-fuel ratio, fuel injection system, fuel vapor canister, fuel cap, upstream and downstream O2 sensors, catalytic converters, etc. Then that took me into all the potential tests and fixes for each of those components, from smoke test to fuel injection system clearn, paint thinner in the gas tank, etc. A simple $30 bluetooth OBDII dongle did help a great deal to pinpoint a specific error codes and idenfying potential fixes. Due to the limited BT bandwidth, the live data analysis can only be done with low fidelity and therefore, harder to pinpoint the problem.

The biggest headache was the exhaust leak; three different shops tried welding to plug the leak but each time only fixed the problem temporarily. I am an advanced DIY mechanic. Would love to have this tool specifically for Toyotas which start to be more and more popular in my country.

Thanks for the useful information. As a DIY guy, you provide the most useful information. Based on your video, I was just about to order the D8, and noticed that they now make a wireless version of the D8. What do you think about the wireless version of the D8, the D8BT ?
