THIS is the ULTIMATE scan tool for DIY mechanics on a budget

  • A Professional auto mechanic reviews a scan tool that is very capable and very comparable with the OEM scan tools but it's a budget one that typically is a lot more expensive for it's capabilities.
In this video we'll take a look at the XTOOL D7 scan tool. Most people would look at this scan tool on amazon and think boy here's another generic looking scan tool that can't do much and cost a fortune. This is where we're wrong. This is a very impressive scan tool feature wise I think it super justifies It's price as it can pay for itself with a couple of uses saving you having to pay a shop to use their expensive scan tool.
If interested Here's a discount code from the manufacturer

I said this in the video but in case you're reading here READ THIS!
If you are not a DIY mechanic or don't want to really dig into heavy diagnosis, Then this scan tool is overkill. Stick with blue driver or Carista and you'll be good. If you do your own repairs but find yourself always going to a shop because the simple scanner you got is incapable then this is a good option for you.
This scan tool is not cheap, but for what it's capable of doing it is a very good value.

I know this is a little late, but maybe it can help someone. If the car supports it (older cars, like my 22 year old Jeep doesn't), you can use just about any cheap scanner to "Check Readiness". That option tells you if the codes have been cleared by showing if the readiness monitors have been set. If they aren't, then either the battery was changed, dead, or the terminals were taken off for some reason (can reset the codes), or that the codes have been cleared. If it shows all of the monitors as set, check to make sure the EVAP is set, too. The EVAP takes the longest to set in a drive cycle. If that isn't set, then the codes were cleared recently.

As for your complaint about having to disconnect the dongle in order to store in the case, I always modify every tool I acquire, especially storage boxes, so I’ll probably be modifying the case to quickly store the entire cable assembly. I’ll also store the cable outside the box in the beginning by hanging it up to hopefully remove all the bends so it coils nicer. Either that or very gentle hot air gun to coax it out straight.

    • @gregzurbay9291
      @gregzurbay9291 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Bidirectional control is very important and helpful if you are doing in depth DIY. It eliminates a ton of diagnostics so you can focus on inputs. Also being able to see streaming data. It is helpful to look at what is happening while the car is fine, say, how the O2 sensors are running. Then you have a baseline and can tell if something is wrong when the day comes.

I spent months researching scan tools. All of them have evasive descriptions with claims of being able to read and erase codes, but none of them tell us the full list of codes they can deal with. They all say "read and erase codes". They list a few things they can do and finish with terms like "and more".
I've checked dozens upon dozens of scan tools. Whether they cost $50 or $2000, all of them make the same claims. That's one reason why I've never bought one.

After hours of trying to update, turns out that most of these scan tools will only do the updates when down-loading at 2.5GHz speed. Currently many of us can only get 5GHz speed and it's too fast to download updates, I was able to do my updates through my phone HOT SPOT / TEATHERING and hook up my USB to scan tool to phone. Just like magic it was all updated, just FYI in the event some of you guys come across an updating issue. I went months trying to figure this out and even mailed in to get it updated.

Interesting and timely review. IMO the average DIY person who really wants to fix the vehicle needs the bi-directional control capability to do an adequate diagnosis of even basic systems. You've got more and more complexity in vehicle systems - yeah you can look at codes and live data but that's still half the tool needed. As you look at individual modules you need a way to verify operation or as example the famous evap leak detected codes a way to isolate the purge and pressure sides of the system.
Its about time that big cost step for a bi-directional tool was reduced and I hope market competition will continue to drive it down.

If you look to scotty kilmer for information and reviews than your looking in the wrong place there bud. That guy is only for views typical youtube dude.. like wranglestar. They spend more effort in trying to bait people into their videos than teach any valuable info in their content.. and most of the time its only their opinion and not fact.. look at scannerdanner or ford tech makuloco or south main auto.. theres a lot more worthy channels that will teach you things rather than bitch about nonsense or tell you they dont like a certain oil because its got more cleaning agents in it.. watch wes work is a goodn for diesels or bigger equipt thats got the basics included in his repairs. But with those channels you can look at their suggested channels and pretty much get all useful shit.. cris fix and scotty.. yea if you wanna change a tire or clean headlights.. lol.. gimme a break.. lol

I have a couple of friends that are techs like you and I follow a couple on YT, like SouthMainAuto, and through that and my experience, all these features do not apply to all vehicles ... especially older ones. The other thing is that when getting down to the repair, it is almost imperative that you have a subscription that includes wiring tracing and the like.
This does sound like it may be a really worthwhile investment.
    Real good explanation and video.

Good stuff. This is exactly what I needed, too. As a DIY I just cannot justify a $5000 dollar professional tool, because I won't make that money back, but the crummy tools for $100 or less are just not enough, and you're right, the bidirectional controls are super important on these modern cars, plus all the TPMS sensors and whatnot that need managed after replacement. No it's not "cheap", but I also know how much a pro tool costs. $5k is cheap for a pro tool. No wonder you were excited. Finally, something that will let me make use of all those ScannerDanner videos.

Impressive. I paid more than the price you mentioned for a scan tool years ago that just outputs PID codes, which the user had to look up. Not much better than reading the check-engine light flashes - in the late 1980 vehicles. 😀 Thanks for showing this tool. I mostly use the smart phone scanner app. now. (Continuous convenient “compact” device monitoring). (Need to watch the coolant temp. - The cooling fan control is flaking out (a 2008 vehicle)… (Thank goodness the fan comes on high with the air-conditioning compressor activation).

Hey And I am a lead tech at carquest in Rockdale Tx I have an Autel mk 808z-bt and am very pleased with it, I have owner snapon for the past 20 years and was tired of the high priced updates. I finally told them on my Solus ultra to just keep it because I was not going to pay another update for a scanner that wouldnt do what I needed for a lead tech. So I shopped around for about 6 months before I actually bought this model Autel for bidirectional control, its does color code wiring and piouts and a lot of extra features that snapon has never had or ever will have.thank for the information on the xtool, I looked at that one too

Great video and content, I love the fact that you used real scenarios with your feedback regarding the battery life and the connectors, and hope the manufacturer takes this onboard for an upgrade. These tools are new to me and while I'm a novice, I see the benefits of special features and specific features such as compression tests (handy if you're looking to purchase a vehicle). I was considering the following 2 options before this video: Launch CRP129e or the iCarsoft CR Pro and was wondering if you could recommend something in between. Thanks from AUS.

I am curious as well. Considering opening a mobile diagnostic business, to scan, diagnostic services, relearn procedures for tcm, ecu, and contract out to local shops who do repairs and aren't equipped to reprogram, or are happy with their established services and do not need to take on that task. In last 2 years I used a mobile company twice for 20 minutes of relearn tcm at 150$-200$ each time

Hey, I would recommend testing an OBDstar as well, as that is their main competitor. There are also a lot of specific scan tools that are for J2534 passthrough only, meant for use with factory diagnostic. You can rent TIS and use a Chipsoft MID/PRO, or a CanTieCar. These are all Russian/Chinese made and very cheap, and give you the full functionality of the factory tool once you rent it for a few days! All of these tools have bidirectional control!

Well done!! Great video. I’m from Germany 🇩🇪 naturally I stick with a German car, ARL Bora 4motion Variant, 420k km. I want to see how long I can keep it running. Just bought my dad an old Rav4 with 300k had to replace the valve gasket. I’m absolutely amazed about the camshafts, they look like brand new. Runs like a clock and shifts like a dream. Just wanted to say. Them Toyotas are generally overlooked. I’ll get one nex time. Hopefully in the far future.

Thanks for the demo. The problem I have with all these tools is actually performing the functions that make these tools so valuable. I want to reprogram keys for my Highlander where all the key fobs and all but one key was lost. Without instructions, and I would be doing this blind. That’s a bit scary. I wish the scan tools came with an instruction manual. If it was well written, I would happily pay for it.

If key programming works, then Autel money it’s worth around $3000 USD. If it doesn’t work, then it’s still amazing the amount you can do. ESPECIALLY output controls for body functions! Would be kinda funny to see that thing hooked up to my 02 Tacoma 😂
