  • A Toyota master diagnostic technician reviews a very good budget scan tool for Toyota owners and Lexus owners.
Find the tool on the channel's Amazon store:

In this video I respond to an invitation from a company called Carista to review their OBDII scanner. I normally would recommend you get the cheapest scanner you can find as most of the cheap ones do the same thing. The professional grade scan tools typically are the ones that are capable of doing the work that people look for and they usually cost a lot and don't make financial sense for DIY mechanics or even car owners and enthusiasts.
However this one is different and I was really impressed by it's features. I review the tool and highlight some of the most impressive features.
    Highlighted features:
1- Toyota and Lexus customizations. These are settings that you can change to customize your car options. This is typically reserved for the ultra expensive and dealers exclusive Tech stream, however this small inexpensive scanner can do the same thing on models supported.
2- TPMS sensor registration on models supported. This goes without explanation as one visit to the dealership to program a sensor will pay for this scanner!
About the only thing I don't like about the scanner is the monthly subscription but I do understand the company's business model as they offer a lot with this tool.

When I bought my '22 Corolla hatchback, I asked the dealer to enable the all windows down with key fob feature. He said nobody had ever asked for that, but he did it for free. However, he wouldn't disable the seatbelt chime because he said it was a safety issue. So I bought an OBDII ELM327 Bluetooth dongle & signed up for a 7-day free trial of Carista. I made all the changes I wanted & canceled before the free trial expired.

My stealer, Advantage River Oaks Toyota in Calumet City, Illinois, wants $150.00 to program my windows to roll down and the moon roof to open using my remote. I told them no thanks. Now I see that you can do it in 5-minutes. What a scam, I hate stealers. I spent over $36k on a new 2021 RAV4 Limited and they’re too cheap to program the windows for me.💩

I have a second set of rims for my 2017 Avalon Limited with non-cloned TPMS sensors, so I need to be able to change ID's with summer and winter tire changeovers. For a number of years now I have successfully used the ATEQ Quickset TPMS ID tool for tire changeovers on my 2009 Accord and 2010 Corolla. The Quickset says that it also covers my 2017 Avalon, but it does not work for me, and repeated conversations with ATEQ customer service was unable to resolve. My Foxwell Elite 510 scan tool with Toyota software was also supposed to support TPMS ID registration, but it does not have that function for my 2017 Avalon. I found the Carista tool and have been using that (paying the monthly fee when I do a tire rim swap) and it does work perfectly for TPMS IDs. I am hoping eventually that Foxwell or ATEQ will resolve the TPMS ID issues for my Avalon, but until then, I have a reliable way to do it with the Carista dongle and app.

    • @LAactor

Next time save the hassle and get a tpms sensor that clones the existing ID in the factory ones and bam, switch and the car doesn't know any difference.

8:10 That "open windows with long press" was activated on my 4Runner when I bought it, and within a week of owning the car, the windows were rolled down and the sunroof opened in the rain while I sat inside the house eating my breakfast. I was not impressed that just having the keys in my pocket would be enough to activate such a feature. And then there is no way to CLOSE the windows with the remote! You have to go outside in the rain and use the physical key in the door to close everything up again.

So you plug the dongle in, turn on the car (push the start button once) and wait for the down load data to be completely processed by the Carista software in the iPhone. Can you modify the CPU to make the Hybrid be more efficient or go faster. 2. Change the min speed for the EV from 30km to 50 or 60kms. Cheers

Does it have an option for the auto start from my key fob to leave the car running once I open the door? What about the button for the map inside the Toyota Camry it says Maps not installed is this device capable of unlocking the map?

Hi i just ordered the carrista i have a 2013 camry where i just replaced 2 tire pressure sensors. The parts are already in the car will this pickup the new sensor id and allow me to reprogram with the obd2 connector. I don’t have the new sensor id recorded. Ideally i don’t want to dismount the tire again

I will have to check if it will work with the Rav4 Prime - if so, are there enough features that the Carista will do that I could not do without it that would make it worth while? Lots of set up abilities with the Prime.

Hi! Turning off the seat belt warning does not turn off the air bag. You can do the same for the drivers seat and rear seats for models equipped.
