      Scotty!! Would i be able to bring my car to you for you to check out?! It's a 2011 Ford Escape with almost 250,000 miles on it. Same engine and Trans. Just idles rough and can't quite figure out the issue with it. It's worse in the cold air and better in the warmer air. Been going on for a couple years now. Besides that it's a great car. Would love for you to see a ford with 250,000 miles on it hahah

    I get my 30-year-old truck looked at by a very good mechanic every single spring. Sometimes, he'll change the plugs other something else but I have never gotten a bill over $225; ever. He takes great care of keeping it running in tippy top shape and I am grateful to that man. He is as honest as the day is long. A woman actually owns that little shop and she runs a tight ship.
    I will never, ever take it to a place like Goodyear or a dealer again. The last time I did I was quoted $1500. I paid $50 for the diagnostic, went to a parts store, bought the parts and made the repairs needed and my total cost including the diagnostic was $150. Talk about mark up!

    It's funny to consider the differences from diagnostics of years gone by and today. I remember when my Dad, a master mechanic and master machinist, was teaching me about such things way back in the 60's and the diagnostic tool we used most back then was 'listening' and knowing the noises and from where they came. Life was so much simpler back then.

    • @gdholmfirth
      @gdholmfirth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      And you could adjust carburetors using a small piece of tubing. Points could be set using a feeler gauge. :Pros adjusted the timing with a strobe light. The rest of us just listened to the RPM while we twisted on the distributor. If an engine would not start, there were really only two things that could be wrong: No spark (fire) or no fuel. Once you narrowed it down to one or the other you could get more specific from there. I bet you remember.

    • @managersamuel
      @managersamuel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Sensors are the better, but they need a scan tool to diagnose faster. Fuel injectors alone were a perfect upgrade from carburetors

    • @bobbystruggle3658
      @bobbystruggle3658 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Being a machinist myself I think I can pretty much fix anything but damn a carburetor rebuild was a learning experience in very good engineering....that nobody knows now. I had a 76 ford and it took me 3 months to figure it out because I'd taken the whole thing apart to rebuild it.

    • @henrynewton8809
      @henrynewton8809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      When I was in my apprenticeship we had a Sun scope that took up half the shop and all it did was tell if the points or distributer was OK. It also showed bad wires or plugs, and if you paid attention you could spot bad engine issues.

    Long time DIYer here. Been using the Torque Pro with BT device for a long time while looking at advanced scanners for YEARS... but wanted to keep under $1,000. XTool is a game changer and they just upgraded their D7 and D8 devices. I just received my XTool D8W. It is Wireless Direct, not Blue Tooth. Data transfer is much faster than bluetooth. My expectations have been exceeded. If you've been on the fence, look no further. And, don't be pennywise and pound foolish. Spend the extra $$ for the D8W. Enjoy! 0:02

    I bought one of these a month ago, because extending the CPO on our 2017 BMW 440i was going to cost $4000.
    Two days after I got it, my friend borrowed it and was able to see that his 2yo Tundra's wheel speed sensor was hosed.
    The dealer couldn't find the problem. He showed them video of using the scan tool and they replaced the sensor under warranty.
    He bought an X8 IMMEDIATELY.
    A couple of weeks ago, my son barely made it home in his 2003 Accord. I used the scan tool to find 2 bad ignition coils. Simple diagnosis with the X8 and simple fix.

    I've watched countless videos on this scan tool which looks like an Xtool D8. This video is by far the most informative. Most of the other videos focus on the bi-directional special functions - which IS very useful for troubleshooting however, the way in which you described this tool could influence my 86 year ol mom to buy one but she doesn't have a driver's license and never drove a day in her life. I bet if she watched this video, she'd buy one anyway. hehehehe

    If you're working with Fords specifically, with an OBD Link EX cable, a free copy of Forscan, and a laptop, you can get all the scanning tools you need for $50. Once you pay $10 for Forscan, you do get some extras like being able to tweak vehicle behavior (like adding cruise control or enabling post-purchase sensors)

    purchased XTool D8. outstanding tool. $688.00 + tax. have used it on several vehicles, I find it comparable to launch X431 V+, autel, and snapon scantools. equal to or greater diagonoetic capabilities; far less in cost. three years free updates. also, XTool D8 has brought out a BT (blue tooth) model, just over $700.00. thousands less than autel and snapon scan tools.thank you Scotty Kilmer for another outstanding presentation. I will soon be 73 years old, I use this tool frequently. wish i had this several years ago.

    Another great video Scotty. I am pleasantly surprised that such full featured generic (all manufacturers) smart scan tools are becoming somewhat reasonably priced now. I see the slightly lower priced Xtool sibling model the D7 Smart Diag Tool is priced around $400-500 which is really not bad for a DIY home mechanic who wants to diagnose and do most of the simple maintenance at home when possible. Until now too much of the data and ability to interact with the ECUs had not been within reach of the average DIY mechanic. Love seeing you go through the features of this scanner and explain the value and ease of use for the average mechanically inclined home mechanic.
    Oh, and no wonder this guy is smart enough to buy that tool, he's got an old iPod with Led Zeppelin on it!

    My go-to Scanner is the Launch. It uses Bluetooth and WiFi. Free updates for Two years and because of the Bluetooth capability, the Technician can use the scan tool away from the vehicle.
    My Snap-on Verus pro is too big for day to day diagnostics. It's only needed if there is a communication failure between any of the Modules on the Can- Bus network. The Oscilloscope feature on the Verus Pro is rarely needed.

    I recommend you to try the more expensive ones that have topology mapping. It shows you the whole picture of the modules and you can see right away where the problem is. It is incredible. You don't even have to look to all the data to pinpoint the problem. You can see it directly in the map

    I have the 2011 ecoboost with the harsh shift into 2nd gear. Hoping a new filter and fresh solenoid bar will fix it. Don't think the adaptive table will ever figure this one out. Previously a Ford PCM recall produced an Initial Configuration not complete code. Pcm cant communicate with bcm. it's never shifted the same after the update. It's a good product with a catch can and if you want to get into truck mechanics. When you look at a good scan tool it's impressive whats going on under the hood.

  • @jokekelleey2071

    That may be from vehicles from 2007 with the can system that was after the OBD2 which is basically the same system it just has more data control sensors senders used to be you just have a vacuum pressure valve on the fuel line so you have basically two different pressure systems you know one when your item the fuel pump doesn't have to work as fast as it hard and then when you step on the gas and immediately goes to the next level so basically you just have to pressure things on your fuel line
