    Great review as always, Pan. I bought this same unit years ago, but I'd recommend using for a final rinse only. The resin gets consumed fairly quickly when using for all steps of a wash and lasted 3, maybe 4 washes before I noticed spots after drying. The replacement resin is somewhat pricey, so using it sparingly as a final rinse only is advised. I live in Florida with notoriously hard water which is a pain, but a home softener system will definitely help prolong the resin as you say.

      a water softener won t help to increase the life of the Demineralisation resin. Water softener is just a ion exchanger, so the TDS is the same as the TDS that came in the softner. You just exchange calcium with sodium, that is easier to take off by itself, and don't make a very hard deposit.

    I’ve had the CR Spotless DIC 20 unit for about 4-5 years now. Absolutely love it. The resin is very easy to change especially if you buy the replacement cartridges instead of buying the extra bags. A little more expensive but worth not making a mess with the resin. I use with my Karcher K5 power washer and it works just fine. I love the security it provides in not having to deal with water spots. Highly recommend it.

    I’ve been using this system for several years. Now I buy resin in bulk and no longer buy the CR cartridges. You only need it for the final rinse. If you use it for first rinse and washing (foam), you can burn up a set of cartridges in one or two washes, depending on how hard your water feed is. Get their by-pass system.

      Where do you get your resin from and how much do you pay? I'm paying around $90 for a 5 gallon bucket from a local guy. Pretty sure he buys by the barrel and repackages. Is the resin you buy identical to the CR resin? The stuff I get is a bit larger in bead size, but seems to perform just the same.

    Thanks Pan. Great review. I've had the DIC-20 for about 2 years. Just a note that CR does sell (or did) a bypass system that allows you to switch from DI to regular water. This really saves on the cost of resin. Problem is their bypass system leaks and I reached out to CR, got a replacement and that one similarly leaked. So, my only criticism is that because there is no effective bypass system, the user needs to be prepared for the cost of replacing resin often (I get about 15 washes before my indicator goes from 0 to 1 or more...my water is considered very hard at 185 mg/L...so that seems to reduce the amount of uses I get from a resin change). To me it does not matter because water spots are horrible to get rid of even with a polisher so I consider the cost worth it to save the paint and the headaches.

    • @kamslm1155
      @kamslm1155 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MercedesMechanic I did check. My water is fairly hard (187 ppm) so when I used the DIC for a full wash, I only received about 10 washes. With the price of media pretty high that can be a bit over the top. But, rushing to finish to beat water spots is worse. Obsessed Garage came out with a bypass solution that I'm using now. Once you set it up it has worked well and that has doubled my use before having to change media. I use the DI water for rinses only and it works fine.

    • @MercedesMechanic
      @MercedesMechanic 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Final rinse is the only thing that makes sense with the cost of DI water but I’m going to go a step further and reverse osmosis my water first sometime in the next two weeks once I get all the research done of what I need. The reverse osmosis will get my water TDS down to around 5 because I have one for drinking water currently and 5 is what it’s doing now from 350 TDS all the way down to 5. So I’m getting a second one for car rinse water to then make DI water for final rinse. However for the car, I learned that a 75 GPD membrane in the RO system will not make as much waste water as my current drinking water system does, that one makes 4 gallons of waste water to clean one gallon for drinking. My new system should waste only 1 gallon per one gallon of clean water. I’ll then put the water in a 50 gallon pressure tank and hook a hose to that. As I hose off my car after washing, the water level drops inside the tank which then turns on the supply to the reverse osmosis system hence filling the tank back up. Only caveat to this is the RO system will take all day to produce 50 gallons of spot free water. I’ll only use about 5-10 gallons though but then I won’t use anymore until my next wash or a between wash rinse off. Only thing I still have to find out is how long the DI cartridge on the RO stem will last. The place I’m buying it says it should last at least 250 gallons, then I’ll change it for $30. So based on what it actually does, I may get a CR spotless which should last me a year if not longer using it only as rinse water. If anyone reading this knows something I don’t please let me know as I’m still planning how to set it up.

    Culligan Water installed my DI system years ago but commented not many home owners have them. They are usually for factories making electronic parts. I have three 4’ tanks and a dedicated spigot running outside. I use a pressure washer because it uses less water. I have well water (dirty hard water) and a water softener. The DI system I use for the whole wash, not just rinse. Suds are heavy, but the best part is if you don’t towel dry, you still will not have spots with Di, demineralization water. Amazing but true. I wash my Harley road king, lots of chrome, no spots even when left soaking wet to dry.

      Most of it has unfortunately become smoke and mirrors. A proper drying aid, like the ones used in tunnel washes, will cost about $20 for 10 gallons and give you plenty of time to dry your car. If you're detailing as a business then this is, after the initial purchase of $410, $120 per 300 gallons, which is only about 30 vehicles if your mindful of water usage, or $4 per car when you could use 15c worth of drying aid for the same end result.
      Edit: Even better, I'm seeing comments of 5-20 washes. Absolutely nuts. $6-$24 per wash. You'd be better off going to a mega mart and just buying RO water at .25 a gallon.

    Great video Pan. RV Mods sells an attachment for your system, if you haven't bought it already. Filter rods that allow you to pack more resin into each container by removing the need for the inner plastic resin containers.
    I have a DI system, different brand but same concept, and I would suggest anyone about to purchase a unit like this, get a TDS meter and find out how hard your water is first, because that will help determine the continued cost by replacing expensive resin. For instance, I live in Florida where TDS is easily over 400. It goes through the resin very quickly. I have an irrigation well that is only 200+ TDS in comparison, so I use it and it helps to save the resin for more rinse cycles before replacement.
    I have seen videos where reverse osmosis setups that fill a tank and use a small pump to push the water out will lower TDS to about 10 before it hits the DI resin and really elongates the DI resin for thousands of gallons of 0 ppm water. I could easily see your already impressive garage adding that to the setup.

    I have the CR Spotless DIC-20 that I have used for years. The pressure washer I use has a output of 1.3GPM which in turns gives me about 3.84 hours of use. That might seem like a lot of time but using it to wash 3-4 vehicles a week at my house hold I find I am replacing the resin filters every 3 months at $119 ($480 for the year) for the two filter exchanges from CR Spotless. It does work great and as advertised.

    Great help Pan. I am unclear though about the need for a water softener for my house. We have very hard water (200mg/L) so initially thought I needed a water softener before the DI system. However, on one of your comments to another viewer you said the water softener actually adds TDS so he would be better off going direct from his regular water directly to the DI system. Please clarify. And, if I do install a water softener upstream from the DI system it's my understanding that water softeners are usually only on the house HOT water systems. So, is the tap to your DI system in your garage hot? Or does your garage tap not pass through the water softener? Thanks

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. A water softener is not needed in this scenario as it would raise the TDS levels and blow through your DI resin quicker.

    Nice unit. I'm on a well with pretty rusty (but potable) water so it goes through a standard water softener and a GE 9" whole house filter.
    I'm wondering if the resin can't be flushed, just as happens in the water softener? That's the reason you have to add salt or potassium chloride. it periodically backwashes the resin beads to strip off the minerals they accumulate. Anyone with one of these units knows that changing out the resin beads is something you rarely do. In my case I inherited this unit when I bought the house ten years ago and I see no reason still to worry about their effectiveness.

From what I’ve seen it has close to a 2GPM flow rate and can connect straight to a hose bib. I was planning on testing one on the end of my bucket filler as part of my wall mount system. I understand the idea behind the CR Spotless, but I find it obscure the price to pay for the system and the resin bags to refill. If your a non-business detailer and mostly work for the fun of it, it aint such a bad option I guess, but as a business it is too expensive with the alternatives out there. Here in SoCal it is easy to find a local detail supply shop that lets you rent tanks and swap them whole when used. In my area, it is about $200 for a medium tank (400-500 Gallons Output) and each swap is $50, so business wise this is a much better option if I am being real here.

      I wash not only my car but detail many cars. Also, I don’t have a water bypass valve so I’m using DI all the time for pre-rinse, snow foam, washing, final rinse, etc so I’m using the DI way too much. Ideally you’d have a bypass to use the DI just for the final rinse.
      Because of that, I need to change my resin every two months.
      I will eventually get a new setup with a bypass installed.

    I live in Phoenix where water can dry on the car by the time I get from one side to the other, so I use DI water for my entire process. That said, the CR Spotless cartridges simply don't last long enough to justify their cost. Phoenix water is also extremely hard with typical reading well over 500. I had to build my own system and go through the ordeal of having to empty my resin tank manually. Still worth it and cheaper than the CR Spotless solution..
