    Iok is dead.
    He has a painful...slowly... death... at hands of Akihiro.
    So, the ending was the most perfect for me.

      I totally get you. During that fight, I was like "OK, they're all screwed, none of my ships sailed, but at least may Iok die the most painful and ashaming way possible" then Akihiro crushes him with those scissors and as Iok is wiggling like a worm hopelessly fearing for his life, I'm like "YESSSSSSS"

      How heart wrenching it is, is part of why it is so perfect to me.
      It really paints the series as a very "real" struggle. There is no perfect ending in such a struggle for survival. Like if brutal and unfair. From the beginning the show paints this sort of "real" story. From the death of Danji in the first episode, Akihiro's brother, and Fumitan the show constantly showed us people who didn't deserve to die would.
      Without sacrifice imo, the series would not be as compelling, tragic and heartbreaking as it is. And really shows us by the end that you'll lose the best of people in the pursuit for a more justice and caring world. I still remember how choked up I got during Orga's final speech. Or our heartbroken I was for Akihiro when they killed Lafter.

      @@kanyenorth2605 That's not incompetent writing that's a deliberate flaw in a character. Mcgillis's entire philosophy was that power rules everything. Which, unfortunately for Mcgillis, is incorrect. Hence why he didn't have a backup plan in case the other members of the 7 Stars decided not to work with him. To him, the idea was inconceivable. Hence, no reason for a backup plan.
      Like I said at the start. Its not the writer being incompetent. Its a deliberate character flaw that we see throughout the entire series. Calling the writer incompetent is just an insult to an otherwise well throughout story and plot.

    • @qgqsrg1
      @qgqsrg1 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@isaacturner197 It's not really because he believed that power rules everything but that he himself worshipped the founder and his power thus took it for granted that everyone else would too, that's why Rustal considered him a child.
      And it's not wrong that power can rule everything, that's why the organisation (not gonna try to spell it) ruled Earth's Sphere for 300 years with no opposition, couldn't control effectively the outer sphere and why they became more democratic after the rebellion which made them lose too much power to stay as rulers instead of merely leaders/protectors which is what they became.
      However he didn't have enough power he in fact had less power than Rustal, that's why he tried to rely on law to turn them.
      Power being the key to ruling is why all Empires fell to either a stronger empire/coalition and/or after being weakened by internal conflicts and corruption. And why most rebellions and coup of this scale have failed.

      You're overrating Char. He ruined his own plan with carelessness as well. CCA: Amuro leaves his gundam to blow up Axis from the inside. Char sees his left behind gundam, doesn't destroy it, get's out of his suit and follows Amuro. Amuro then stops Axis' drop with his gundam.

    • @mlo009
      @mlo009 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      It's called honor in Char's part. He wanted a final duel with Amuro, even leaked out some of psycoframe technology to Anaheim so Amuro could fight against him in equal terms (nu gundam). Axis-drop was to set a stage for them to meet each other in battle. It was part of Char's plan (he didn't anticipate nu gundam going overdrive with a miracle, Axis broke it's half late and was going to drop).
      Char was brilliant in the One Year War where he achieved his goal to eliminate the Zabi family. Simply put, the best antagonist in gundam history.

    My problem is that this story is at it's core it's an underdog story. You're rooting for the little guy. You want to see them win (even if they die as doing so would just be another sacrifice towards them winning). The show stomps on that idea saying "it doesn't matter what you do, you can't beat those with wealth/power/etc". Yeah the ones who survived got a happy ending, but they didn't earn it by winning. They got it only because the bad guy just turns goes ahead and does what they were trying to achieve at the end. We barely get any indication that this is the type of guy who actually wants reform outside of his lacky saying "OMG he's such a great guy". I was expecting Mika to die, but not die a heretical scapegoat and branded a devil with the big bad getting away unscathed.

    • @skyworm8006
      @skyworm8006 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      No. It's about an ultimately fatalistic band of brothers. This is the only way it could ever end. The existence of Tekkadan was a temporary thing, for the boys to live and rise and die, for the one and only time in their miserable lives. The whole point is that the real world is there and cannot be overturned. Them carving out their existence is much deeper because of this, because it's not a trite happy ending that makes zero sense.

      true dat, this is an underdog story , so no matter what ---people will still root for the underdogs. they struggled and lost so much to reach the goal, we hope some kind of reward no matter how small it is will be granted to them in the end.... but no, the reward was actually death. Like, i want to punch the creator face so bad because of this.

    • @Noobnormality
      @Noobnormality 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes! This is an underdog story! And you we're expecting them to win, and they did! If you remember on season 1, the main plot was to bring Kudelia Aina Bernstein to earth and become famous. And they did! And not only they brought kudelia to earth and gain attention, they also exposed gjallarhorn's twistedness, which one of Mcgillis' plans. Then on season 2, they don't really have any goals, except for them looking a better place to stay. They don't need to win, because they already achieved their goal. And no, they didn't win because of the main antagonist changing his mind, I mean technically speaking yes but, if not because of tekkadan's actions and Mcgillis plans taking into account, Rustal would've never thought of changing the system, because none really said what they did wrong. Yes, Mcgillis could've done that with his own, but really he is powerless and his plans wouldn't really work without tekkadan. And if you're wondering on why he is called the devil even at the time of his death, is because of 1, the mobile suit he is piloting amd on how he fights, or 2 and the most democratical one (i don't know what word i should use sorry) is because the one who tries to fight the government is always depicted as the bad guy, no matter what if you try to rebel them or try to expose their corruption, which reflectsthe real world corruptions of the government. I mean, if i dare you to go out and say all the the things that the government did wrong, what would you think? You would say "no! Are you stupid? I'll get jailed if i do" right? That's the point i am trying to say.

    After hearing about the series, I came to watch it over these past few days, and I gotta say its honestly very interesting. However neatly tied or dramatic the ending may be though, I think there's one that works *slightly* better, and its Mika not having to die- to follow Orga's last order, though. To quote an old song, "Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin, is knowin what to throw away, and knowin what to keep, 'cause every hands a winner, and every hands a loser, and the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep."
    First change I'd make: Julieta doesn't see the final battle. When she stops the Dáinsleif fired at Rustal, either she stops it with her own body, or Mika takes the opening and cuts her down. I'd be more partial to the former personally, but the important thing is she isn't there later. She doesn't deserve to be, and she's one of the worst characters in my opinion, outside of her constant belittling of Lok. If she did anything other than belittle Lok, she'd win my nomination for worst character of the series.
    Because she's not there at the final battle, and the bits with McGillis play out basically the same, the onslaught force doesn't really have an answer for Tekkadan outside of sheer numbers. Even so though, just like the actual story, soon its Akihiro and Mikazuki. Maybe Hush lasts a *bit* longer on the battlefield, maybe he eats a Dáinsleif as well, but that's not as important. The 2 make their brilliantly animated final stand, except there isn't a Julieta to hold back Mika or order the troops to hold back from swarming in. Lok doesn't have the sense to realize the danger they're in, and his death plays out the the *T* how it did previous. (That if nothing else was satisfying as hell.)
    The biggest change is that at the end, a severely wounded Barbatos and Mika wouldn't necessarily need to die. I'd argue 2 possible paths here: One, Mika is still in Barbatos in the final conflict, the other involves the bits from the Mobile Armor.
    For the first route, would it be impossible for him to butcher his way through the chaff around him, to clear himself a path, to fight to live as Orga told him to? A final "What.... should I do now.....Orga?"
    Maybe we actually get a worded version of that alleyway scene, maybe its Orga telling him in no uncertain terms to live for himself for once, to stop being such a dunce who only does what Orga told him to, or maybe its not even Orga in his mind, but Kudelia and Atra. Whatever the case, that's all the buildup we get before a stunning flurry of combat and death as he makes his escape. Blood flowing from his face as it did every time he over-exerted himself and Barbatos, he butchered his way through tens of hundreds of suits, making a dead run away from the escape tunnel his family is using.
    Considering how easily Lupis-Rex was destroying the lesser soldiers that assailed him, I think a full on line breach wouldn't be "impossible", or even an asspull at that point. The real crux is, would Gjallarhorn let him escape? True, you wouldn't want the symbol of the enemies might to remain, but what can *one* rogue Gundam do against the entire fleet of Gjallarhorn? How could he draw allies to him when, as far as Rustal knows, everyone who was allies with this punk is about to be killed off. Nobody would be so foolish as to unite behind one Gundam when even the mighty Bael proved no match. Consider how many units were just butchered by this one adversary- is it worth the resources to hunt down this one man? What can he do? Is the devil worth more of your men and forces? Could you maybe snag him with a Dáinsleif, even though he now knows to be wary of them, and a wounded animal being both threatening and cautious? As a commander I personally wouldn't.
    The second route would involve that fateful moment, were-in Barbatos is beheaded by Gjallarhorn. Maybe even its Lok getting his final achievement in, "Killing Mikazuki" and cheering himself on, before Akihiro realizes who he is and crushes him deservedly. Obviously Lok "beating" mikazuki is kinda stupid right? Except when they take Barbatos apart, to make sure the pilot is dead- there is no pilot. Maybe there's some blood to make it convincing, or maybe the corpse isn't that of Mikazuki, but everyone is stumped, except for Akihiro who can truly die with a smile on his face as he kills Lok.
    Flashback to before the battle, and what held up Pops from escaping immediately, to a project he'd been working on since the Mobile Armor incident. Using bits from that, after it was handily cut to ribbons, he was able to rig up a sort of remote system for Mika. Obviously he isn't the man behind the Mobile armors, and even patching it together, he's still a mobile worker specialist, so fully recreating the Armor Ai is something he shouldn't be able to and wouldn't do. However, using the sort of control-less frame, could he maybe use the parts from the drones and the Armor to make a wireless interface with Mika's Alaya-Vijnana? This one is a bit more of an ass-pull than the other, as even Pops is no mechanical super-genius, but it *can* sort of be justified.
    Still relying on the Alaya-Vijnana System, but now using a wireless interface in a remote cockpit, it was even harder to use than a normal system, and left behind when the base was detonated, no functional evidence of it remains, but the end result was a mostly safe rendition of Mobile Suit combat- outside of the fact the information would still cause injury to the pilot, as now you could make an argument the data stream might be even more intense. Mika might even be hampered from it by for lack of a better term, input lag, and so wouldn't put on quite as stellar of a show. Obviously this wouldn't need to come up in the story later or in a future story, because the only functional prototype devised is now a pile of rubble.
    The important part here is that I'd like to make an argument for 2 ways Mika might be able to survive, even wounded, the final battle. Once he does, what's left for him though? He's already down his right arm and leg, and overexerting himself again would have to take even take more out of him. Stay with me, I've got that covered. Everything else would play out as it did, except when Kudelia heads to the farm, she sees Pops there. Surprised, they strike up a conversation, and that's when we hear Mika's voice, maybe chastising his son.
    Now with a couple mechanical bits, hooked up and controlled by his Alaya-Vijnana, Mika is alive and even somewhat functional. He'll never be able to pilot a suit again, and without his AV he wouldn't be able to move anything but his left arm, but he can live his life in peace, with Atra, Kudelia, Gram, Cookie, Cracker, and his son Akatsuki. Maybe he and Kudelia get together, maybe its just him an Atra, point is he doesn't die.
    I honestly think that Mika surviving is a better ending, not because of "muh ships" or anything so trite as that, but because it rounds out Orga's orders perfectly. In the first option, maybe Barbatos is taken apart, and parts of it are used for rebuilding Mika/interfacing with his AV, or maybe the machine is given to someone who can use it, like what remains of the Turbans or Teiwaz. In the second scenario, Barbatos is displayed as a war trophy for Gjallarhorn, and they just leave out the part were the pilot isn't actually dead because its bad press.
    A really interesting moment might be Gaileo returning to Mars to meet with Kudelia over security concerns since Gjallarhorn is back to being Gjallarhorn, and seeing a rebuilt Mika. Maybe he recognizes him and doesn't say anything, or maybe Mika's entire persona and being half machine at this point throws him off.
    At the end of the day though, the whole reason I bothered to come here and put this on a now 3 year old video is because of the simple fact of something important to our modern life, today. Anime can be quite inspiring in many directions, and while some may look at Mika and Orga and see determination, the will to just keep moving forward, I see it slightly differently.
    Mika and Orga needed to work to get where they were, true, but if Orga had calmed down slightly after becoming part of Teiwaz, if they hadn't followed McGillis, and in Mika's case, if he used that head of his for something other and fighting, they could have seen the life they had right in front of them. Mika especially, was willing to throw away any chance with 2 women who clearly loved him, let alone his life of peace on the farm, and everything else, because fighting is all he knew and he felt he owed Orga. For all the despair we feel, when a loved one dies or when life kicks us while we're down, determination is a lofty ideal, but never forget what you have. Nobody ever truly has nothing to lose, and you matter to those around you more than you know.
    That crux moment in the first option, the last "What.... should I do now... Orga?" would illustrate that perfectly, with Orga finally having the time and setting, finally being alone with Mika where he can drop face to explain something fully to Mika:
    "Mika...you don't owe me anything. I "bet the farm" many times when Tekkadan was in deep, and Mika, you were right there with me all the way- I never doubted you, and you were the reason I could keep going...after Biscuit..Naze...Shino...everyone. I can't say we even won more than we lost- when we lost, we lost big..but that doesn't matter now. I couldn't take us all where I promised, and that's on me, not you. All I can say is this: Don't throw your life away for dead friends- You remember that place I told you about, Mika? Finding someplace we belonged? You've found yours. Its with Atra, and Kudelia. Go there, and live. That's what you should do now. Live on, for yourself, and for us. Tekkadan's...no, Orga's Orders."

      I like your idea about Mika using his A-V to move mechanical limbs so he can move around, the way I had always though of how he would move around in a setting where he somehow lived would be that Barbatos or at least its main operating system and A-V would be in a houses basement or attic and would just stay permanently connected to Mika, sort of like the Marinette from Fnaf, where there is a cable connected to the ceiling that it uses to move around.
      Your idea of it is an interesting take on how Mika would move around. :D

    Rustal didn't do it because he genuinely believed McGillis's goals. He's a pragmatic man who realized that the Seven Stars system was weakened with only three members left and that another revolution would be inevitable if things remained the same. So, he placated the masses, painted himself as the hero, and gained all the power. He was selfish, but his selfishness brought about what Tekkadan and McGillis wanted all along.

      Ooooh nice reading. Now the ending makes a lot more sense. With a severely weakened power base he wasn't able to become a totalitarian dictator and had to be more amenable to the needs of the Martians. Kudelia was the final nail in the coffin for him because she had the savvy and presence to keep him in check. So in a roundabout way Tekkadan and Mcgillis achieved their goals at the cost of their lives.

    Mika and Akhihiro's last stand and death, amazing. Orga refusal to die after being shot like 9 times, fantastic. The beautiful moment in the epilogue where we see everyone from Tekkadan enjoying lives as normal people, terrific. But the moment that really had me loving the ending was the scene with Ride at the end when he shoots Nobliss. This moment managed to propose the possibility to me of Tekkadan and Orga's legacy living on through Ride and the other members, suggesting that Tekkadan is still there, even after the curtain falls.

    I agree with a lot of this - but the thing that always chokes me up is seeing how Mika's dreams are flourishing without him; a family (Kudelia, Atra, and Akatsuki) on a farm in peace and with (most) of the rest of the survivors of Tekkadan also living their lives like Orga wanted them too. You can see that Mika was thinking about the future near the end when he saw the crops Kudelia cultivated and started reading about farming techniques again. He also wanted to make sure Atra and his child (tearing up again because I just remembered not only did he never get the chance to meet his son but he didn't even get to pick a name for him) were safe and protected with Kudelia. It's a good ending given the wider themes of the show. I just wish Mika could have lived to see that his son, and all the children of Mars, will have childhoods completely different to his own; full of love and hope, rather than desperation and violence.

      Now here's a comment I fucking agree with, and the part that I find absolute bullshit is that Julieta got stabbed dead on and fucking survived even though she was a normal human being and the most thing that pisses me off is that it was never a fair fight to begin with, even when Akihiro was still alive it was like 2 against an army and not just that, but also getting nuked?! And another dumbass part in my opinion, is that when Mcgillis gets bael he immediately turns into a dumbass by charging against a full army by himself which gets him killed easily, and if you think that I just don't like series' with sad endings when the protagonist dies well think again boi because of this Netflix anime called devilman crybaby (spoilers for devilman crybaby) at the end of the show, the main character Akira Fudo AKA devilman dies at the end but not by just a cheap-ass way like Mikazuki who was killed by fighting in an unfair battle but died in a fair battle, army to army but still lost but it felt satisfying because they legitimately got close but to no avail, because it was mainly devilman+his army against satan+a weaker army and just felt fairer like they stood a chance as both sides have respect for each other (I'm talking about Akira and the antagonist who is satan in this context) and they both never fought dirty but in IBO the antagonist was so unfair that he pretty much nuked only two guys. And THAT is why I agree with the way you have depicted the end should've been, thank you for taking your time to read this and I hope someday they do what you said as a slight remake to the ending.

    This still doesn't explain why Rustal reforms Gjhallarhorn after keeping McGillis from doing the exact same thing. Nor does this explains why the organization suddenly abandons Mars and lets the planet claim independence. It would've made more sense if Rustal maintained the status quo and paid lip service to reform; instead the audience gets this cop-out at the last minute to give (almost) everybody a happy ending. This doesn't necessarily ruin the series for me; the ending just leaves everybody scratching their heads.

    • @SeekerLancer
      @SeekerLancer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      McGillis' version of "reforming" Gjallarhorn had McGillis as its sole dictator which I'm pretty sure Rustal was not a fan of. As for Mars becoming independent I agree that one is out of left field but it may have had something to do with Rustal's backdoor dealings with Teiwaz.

    • @isaacturner197
      @isaacturner197 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A different comment explains in greater detail why Rustal reformed Gjhallarhorn, bur the main gist of it is that there were only 3 memebers of the 7 star's left, so another revolution was inevitable once enough time had passed. So Rustal scrapped the old system and remade it. The fact that it resembles what McGillis wanted to some extent is mostly just because of how effective it was for what he had to work with and left him with a much larger power base than what he started with.

    For how Season 2 went, I would agree that the ending is good in that specific context. However, throughout Season 2 I was continually baffled by how most of the influential characters in the story who aren't new display totally different or unexpected traits with no real explanation behind the shift. The issue I have with Season 2 then is that Season 1 doesn't even really matter for it, since things are so inconsistent. Biscuits death meant nothing. McGillis somehow goes from Magnificent Bastard to simple Power-hungry Man-child and apparently didn't have anywhere near the extensive scheming towards what he'd do as head of his family compared to trying to get that position, not to mention the Montag persona being gone as well without any explanation. Todo (though only a minor character) has apparently disappeared in the interim. Gaelio is different as well but that's actually a rare case of consistency with his end in Season 1.
    Season 1 had refreshing action that subverted the trope of the Gundams (or Mobile Suits in general) being the only significant factor in the battle. The initial conflict between Tekkadan and the Turbines remains one of my most favorite space battles in visual-medium fiction due to the combined-arms approach of Season 1. Tekkadan would have straight-up lost to the Turbines if it had just been about the mecha. Akihiro was screwed and Mika would have at best had mutual defeat with Lafter or to push on Suspension of Disbelief a little bit could have just barely come out with a win, only to face the other two Aces of the Turbines while he's already battered and they're mostly unscathed. Mika could not have won that fight at that stage of his growth as a pilot. Even with AV and his natural instincts the skill gap between him and the Turbines Aces was still simply too great. Amida especially being up there with McGillis as the top pilots in the series by skill alone, contending with AV units or vastly superior units without having AV (until Bael for McGillis at least). Back to the point, Tekkadan wins by boarding the Hammerhead and making it to the bridge to end the conflict without a single casualty. Compare that to Dainsleif overuse, nary a Mobile Worker to be seen, no infantry action, and only one or two instances of the ships doing anything other than just being effectively stationary gun-platforms and hangars for the Mobile Suits. Season 2's "arcs" are also resolved too quickly to be satisfying and have little if any impact on the other "arcs" because of it. I don't believe Akihiro should have been able to get his vengeance upon Galan Mossa so swiftly. It all feels so loosely-connected with so many missed opportunities for actually clever twists, turns, and conflicts. Imagine how cool it could have been to have Galan Mossa piloting the House Elion Gundam against Akihiro in the final battle or perhaps earlier in the final act or towards the end of the second. Imagine how interesting it could have been if Gaelio was actually on McGillis' side the whole time or turned back to his side after a heart-to-heart. Sure Season 1 has its own flaws but they're easier to reconcile with since the plot is tightly woven with only minor deviations that still end up being relevant in some significant way (if only to the perspectives of particular characters).
    Note: I'm not saying that McGillis should have won necessarily, just that the portrayal of his character in Season 1 makes the manner of his downfall in Season 2 jarring.
    EDIT: Fixed a couple of typos.

      I would disagree about Rustal on a point of pedantry. You claim he is among the most poorly written antagonists; I believe he wasn't even written at all :p
      The question then is which is worse?
      I can suspend my disbelief of Gaelio's survival since we did not literally see the kill confirmed and it's a common trope for characters to come back like that as a twist. What doesn't make sense to me is his actions afterward. In an attempt to make it all make sense I started thinking maybe he was on McGillis' side after all as a double agent in Rustal's camp, with the exchange they had in their Season One duel being a ploy to convince Rustal that Gaelio was an enemy of McGillis since they could easily say that Kimaris' computer recorded it all. Of course as Season Two progressed I lost confidence in the writing and scrapped that theory of mine as something too clever for the writers and director who all seem to be interested in surface-level drama that is only effective (if at all) at the initial moment of consumption, falling apart after any examination. The disbelief I can NOT suspend is that Gaelio would leave his family in McGillis' hands for TWO YEARS in order to "try to understand" the man who tried to kill him.
      Kudelia was integral to Season One in that she was our audience-perspective character to the world of Tekkadan. As a somewhat naive noble who was inexperienced with the real world, she prompts exposition drops for us the audience so that we can learn alongside her. Her position in Season Two isn't a contradictory one to her ending in Season One, but she isn't given an adequate replacement amongst Tekkadan for the purposes she held for the audience. The closest we get is the Tekkadan newbies who don't really work in that same way. Also, McGillis should have definitely tried to make more use of Kudelia since she is indeed as you said, "the Maiden of Revolution". Just another proof that Season Two McGillis isn't even the same character.
      McGillis puts all his faith in Tekkadan because they remind him of himself, showing that he can't trust anyone else but himself. This is vastly different from Season One McGillis who would make use of any and every resource available to him.

    • @imperatorhanseatic1274
      @imperatorhanseatic1274 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be fair about Bael though, he did some serious work with it. After all, it took Unlimited Kimaris to take him down. He was untouchable to the normals in much the same way as Mika, possibly even more-so when you consider how barebones Bael is compared to Lupus Rex. So the strength of Bael as a Gundam isn't a fairytale, only the sway it had over Gjallarhorn turned out to be unreliable. Of course he was still overconfident and reckless but by the time he's actually fighting with Bael it's already too late to recover from his lack of contingency plans so I can understand him going all in. Again it's not how it ends for him that gets me, but the way he gets to that last stretch which I think we agree on here.
      Rustal didn't seem to hate McGillis so much as distrust him, likely from the revelations about Gaelio's attempted murder when he took him in. He genuinely seemed to wish that they hadn't turned out to be enemies early on and seemed to primarily disagree with his methods rather than his supposed goal. Beyond that, all we see is "generic pragmatist villain" with no deeper characterizations. His actions also are illogical as hiding his war crimes would prove to be impossible in the long run. As for how he went ahead with the reforms at the end, I believe he was staying true to the pragmatism we were shown by making the most of the hand he was dealt. They definitely tried to put too much into this plot. If all the time with Iok scheming to get rid of the Turbines was instead put on fleshing out Rustal, maybe things would be better. But no. We get Iok and Jasley....

    • @imperatorhanseatic1274
      @imperatorhanseatic1274 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, we also didn't see McGillis disable his AV limiter like Mika does. So Imagine how cool THAT would have been (along with Akihiro in Gusion). Maybe as an adult McGillis could get away with it without the severe damage to his body Mika suffers, or he'd know just how much to use to get the job done without sacrificing a limb. I can suspend my disbelief about the Ein stuff, just that eventually even Ein's brain would get fried and be unusable. It's still pretty cool, after all, even if it doesn't totally make sense.

    such a bittersweet ending. I wish Mika and Akihiro survived, but I cant hate Rustal or Julieta for being the characters they are. Despite having plot armor, Julieta honestly worked hard to become the character she was at the end of the day, while she did'nt personally defeat Barbatos her victory at the end was only because of her determination to prove herself as a low born. And as a politician Rustal was smart, everytime he used the Dainslef I wish he got Karma for it, but it only adds to the point that Tekkadan was so powerful that he had to use forbidden powers comparative to a nuke just to defeat them not rely on his so called status and power.
    But I do like the fact that McGillis's ideals had rubbed off on him, knowing since that McGillis and Tekkadan were created from the system that had been in place for years they would one day rise again. He realize that they were just symptoms of a disease, no matter how many times you block them it doesn't matter if you're still sick. While his decision to turn Gjallarhorn a full 180 into a better governmental system, granting martian independence, eventually pardoning Tekkadan and abolishing child space debris paints his picture as a total hero and a man with all the power....it is still the ultimate victory for McGillis and Tekkadan.
    While they realized that their biggest strength was their dreams and ideals for a better world. Yet they tried to force it with only physical power and rush through haphazardly like monsters and demons, not realizing that not everyone fears the devil. It's the reason why Rustal played such mind games using Iok, Jasley and Galan Mossa. He worked diligently and thoroughly to strip these demons of their supports (Turbines, Teiwaz, Gjallarhorn Mars Branch and the Tekkadan Earth Branch) before leading an onslaught on them himself.....where as our Heroes kept on gunning straight for the main boss without trying to de-buff him. Rustal basically killed the Hydra by cutting off each head and burning the stumps and THEN attacking the main body. McGillis and Tekkadan just tried to attack the main body straight up, they may have cut off a few heads, but they DID NOT burn the stumps.
    And that's the theme of the show, it's what Naze told Orga and what Orga realized before he died, that positive change and the realization of ones dreams cannot happen over night. No matter how much power you think you have, brute-fully using it to achieve instant change does not always work and even if does, it always comes at a cost. True change comes at using your power at the right time, building up and safeguarding your supports and allies, taking new opportunities and letting them develop into something stronger, waiting to strike when hour is ready and/or when your enemy has let their guard down.
    It's a very realistic ending to a very realistic show. The fact that the Turbines girls didn't join them because they have responsibilities, loyalties and debts to Teiwaz and the memory of Naze. The fact that despite every other Tekkadan member finding happiness and peace after the conflict, Ride, being the one guy who still couldn't shake the hate or the violence decided to kill Nobliss for what he had done (I still fucking cheered tho, bastard got what he had coming), yet you can kind of see a glimpse of him thinking, "I finally killed him, but this doesn't bring Orga or those who we lost back.". The fact that Rustal does not try to pursue all hidden Tekkadan members, despite Kudelia, hinting her ties to them and their survival, because there's no point in starting conflict while there's peace, especially since he knows it's because of Tekkadan that peace exist today.

    This ending divides the realists from the dreamers. The realists who like this ending understand the odds that Tekkadan faced, and knew people would die. Dreamers probably hoped for a more shonen type ending where everyone lives and Rustal dies.

    In my opinion, the finale of IBO was well-done, BUT only to disguise the fact that the entire arc leading up to the finale was utter bullshit. Yeah, there were some nice satisfying scenes, which I think distracted everyone to that fact. The entire revolution arc (and really, ever since Hashmal showed up) had a very messy and disappointing plot, with McGillis actually being a complete idiot despite two seasons of scheming, Tekkadan fighting for something that completely goes against their usual modus operandi, and the rapid fire deaths that weren't necessary and weren't done well at all. There was a complete lack of direction in the second half of season 2, and it pretty much went against the themes of the first season.

      Shit you. Mcgillis would've won if rustal didn't plan on using the dainsleif. Mcgillis already outnumbered Rustal with tekkadan in episode 44/45 somewhere there. McGillis only option was to fight alone. He know bringing other people is useless other than Mika. And yet you say you didn't had a plan. His plan was almost perfect but just that rustal was another brilliant guy. How do you guys ignored this part of details. And don't compare Mcgillis to Char, i like Mcgillis more than Char honestly. Mcgillis didn't give up his ideal until his very end, even he's injured after fighting Gaeleo, he pick up his gun trying to kill Rustal and you think that is easy? He hope that Emilia can see a better future and don't let her kill herself! I considered myself a gundam fanboys, but then i dont know why so many gundam fanboys don't like IBO because the direction is different. Seriously, IBO for me is the best gundam series so far. The realism is there if you talking about revolution. Definitely not your typical shounen anime, or in ZZ the carefree protagonist or in G gundam, power of might win everything or in OO, having the most OP gundam is most important. Mika has the best gundam, so rustal also had his plan to fight Mika!

    every character's death was handled well. tekkadan's descent from freedom fighting kids in season one to warriors with no goals left in season two made the manipulation of them by mcgillis very believable.
    I can respect rustal, he did what he had to do to achieve his goals, and he was smart about it. if it hadn't been for iok setting the precedent for using dainsleifs, rustal probably would've had a harder time dealing with tekkadan.

    my reason to hate this one is that the first season was great, and the first half of the second season wasn't that bad, but then the anime just stopped with the realistic approach they were doing, and went for the "it's the final quarter, we needa rush everything and kill off the entire cast" approach.
    Like, McGillis plots for an entire season and a half, and we're being told his entire plan rested on the fact that he had Bael, and therefore everyone would follow him, par two or three specific people? We were led to think that he was smart, not a full blown dumbass that can manipulate people with ease, but not understand how soldiers work. Furthermore, he didn't attempt even once to get rid of the DainSleifs, and that is just inexcusable. They were freaking illegal weapons, what sort of righteous revolutionary just ignores this fact completely, his entire fleet was defeated by that, and that alone.

    • @TheSilverwolf97
      @TheSilverwolf97 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      About Dainsleif usage, they were checkmated 'cause Rustal made the excuse that McGillis used it first. Its like a nuclear warfare, illegal and all but if you receive a nuke you will use your own nukes to counter no matter what. Plus, Rustal had all the press manipulated. I think McGillis lost when he gave up on the political aspect due to having Bael and pretty much declared an all out war in disadvantage.

      Stories where the good guys defy all logic and win are boring as piss, though, TryHardHero. It's utterly infantile to have stories that are full of plot armor and mary sue characters, or black and white morality. Rustal wasn't even necessarily the 'bad guy'. As the video points out, he ultimately wanted the same things they wanted, but without dragging people into ridiculous wars. The video was also accurate in pointing out that Tekkedan, of all groups, had NO room crying foul over Rustal's tactics.

    • @tigera6
      @tigera6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Shadow7988, its not Tekkedan who should do the crying, but the AUDIENCE who watch. I mean if the bad guy isnt necessary bad, then the writer has failed. If he end up doing exactly what the good guy wants to do, then why the hell he has to kill them off for no good reason?
      I can see it if its a war that base on different religious belief, then no one is necessary the bad guy. But this is just stupidity if you make the the character as the Final Boss and THEN give him the win easily, thats bad writing all the way

    I know I'm late to this video, but I just want to bring up on a different aspect, which is how absolutely haunting the final battle is, especially when Mika finally releases all of the safeties and you just hear Barbatos Lupus Rex's cooling vents HOWL. This long, mournful, hateful sound that clearly scares the ever living soul out of most of the enemy soilders...and then seeing him practiaclly teleport across the battlefield via the radar. Two pings and suddenly he's on you like a wild animal that was backed into a corner, and that really is the best way to put it.
    I absolutely loved almost everything about IBO, and while I'd love to see more in the Calamity Timeline, I have no personal idea as to what they could do.

    @ajmalwaqif6097 7 ปีที่แล้ว +61

    This is nonsense. The difference between Gjallarhorn (specifically Rustal's faction) and Tekkadan is that the Martian people are oppressed. So if Tekkadan, in fighting for Martian sovereignty, break the rules of war and use underhanded tactics there is a certain justice in it. Tekkadan are a faction of orphans and ex-slaves who are fighting for their rights, Gjallarhorn are a faction created for the purpose of keeping poor Martians like them down -- how are they both morally culpable to the same degree? The violence of the slave and the violence of the slave-owner are never equivalent.

    • @ajmalwaqif6097
      @ajmalwaqif6097 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Jeran Korak oh are you one of those people who believe slavery and colonialism didn't happen?

    • @ajmalwaqif6097
      @ajmalwaqif6097 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Jeran Korak a war crime can literally only be carried out by a sovereign state through a military body i. e. gjallarhorn, thats the very definition of war crime. may i remind you that tekkadan, like countless other guerilla armies in history, were not a sovereign state (that's what they were fighting for the right to be) but a civilian militia and therefore are not legally culpable for war crimes, nevermind morally.

    • @ajmalwaqif6097
      @ajmalwaqif6097 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      in any case, one side of the conflict only commits war crimes in order to survive and ultimately to abolish the need for war and war crimes altogether. the other side resorts to them to brutally continue its own rule over the other. they are not political or moral or legal equals in this sense at all.

    • @ajmalwaqif6097
      @ajmalwaqif6097 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That's why i said 'in any case'. That is, even if you COULD classify them legally as 'war crimes' (which in real-world international law you cannot), they are not equivalent.
      Justice is not blind and you are utterly naive to think it is. Justice always serves particular interests. The justice of the state is just as much a representation of the personal beliefs and interests of a particular group of people. Because of this, the state in our world, and Gjallarhorn in the IBO world, are not neutral actors, they are armed groups that exist to keep a certain status-quo in power. Literally no progress in history has ever been made without people challenging unjust laws and unjust states. This theme was literally SPOON-FED to you in this anime, particularly in Season 1 where Gjallarhorn's control is EXPLICITLY described as responsible for the economic hardship on Mars, why orphans starve in the streets, or are sold as slaves, etc. Gjallarhorn are willing to shoot peacefully demonstrating civilians and workers, bomb them, frame them (on Mars, and in the colonies), or assassinate peaceful diplomats like Kudelia or Makanai, all to keep this system where they rule the Earth Sphere in check. (Note: the laws that deem the actions of Tekkadan criminal are laws made by Gjallarhorn in the interests of Gjallarhorn, without any Martian having a say in it because - remember - Mars isn't sovereign! that's the whole point of the plot! the law isn't neutral precisely because Martians have no say in their own government.) It's astounding that you can ignore all that plot detail and claim Tekkadan and Gjallarhorn are just as guilty as each-other. It bears mentioning that Tekkadan (or CGS's') first encounter with Gjallarhorn was an unprovoked attack; had CGS not defended themselves ('war crimes'!!! 'breaking the law'!!!) they would have all been massacred. In fact for all of S1 Tekkadan are literally acting in self-defence, while Gjallarhorn are trying to murder a peaceful diplomatic delegation. Tekkadan only ever resort to underhanded or violent tactics because Gjallarhorn consistently closed off every other option.
      Yes, Gundam has always been about creating heroes and villains with complex and realistic motivations, no one is outright evil or good, they are acting out of their own group interests. But Gundam has never been about moral nihilism. Just because people have realistic motivations does not mean, just like in the real world, that there are no causes that are better than others or more worthy of support. The way Mari Okada portrays Tekkadan and Kudelia, when they talk about their beliefs, their aspirations and their willingness to fight for causes like ending slavery, or ending child poverty on Mars, or fighting for Martian sovereignty, there is an UNMISTAKEABLE sense of endorsement -- that this is what 'the good guys' are fighting for. If you're unable to understand that then you either have a completely broken moral compass ('durrrr slavery is ok cos it's the law') and/or you're blind to obvious thematic cues.
      And just for the record, I think it's a sad ending because the 'villains' won. I don't think Rustal is a 'good guy' just because his faction won in the end as you seem to do and as the original video says. However for the same reason, I also think it's a well-written and realistic ending because, just like in the real world, real rebels and heroes die in the struggle and are forgotten to history, while the rulers write their own accounts.

    Funny, I didn't exactly hate Rustal, but I think that authors didn't showed enough of his positive sides. I think what could be done to make him better character, they should have given him more time shown in positive light. If we would see Rustal from different points of view, not just as rival to protagonists, he would have been much more compelling character and his actions after victory wouldn't look that 180 of his actions during the story. So my problem isn't with character in the end, it's more of a problem on how simple he is during the show.

    In my opinion the ending was perfect without all the video essays having to explain it. Tekkadan’s goal was never to save the world, it was to survive and keep moving forward as the most emotional character death in human history attested to. Kudelia wanted Martian independence, McGilles wanted to be a big boy but the goal of the kids themselves was only ever the safe, happy place Orga had promised them. They had been suicidally rushing towards a constantly moving goal for two seasons and the realisation that they already had everything they needed was the ideal finale for the series.

    "Tekkadan were allied with criminal groups"? Have you not been watching the anime? They were just a bunch of kids who grew up in a world filled with adults who were trying to off them. They were fighting SO they could GO to a place, where they didn't need to fight anymore. Didn't Tekkadan conclude that, "it's either kill or be killed" in order to live?
    And, the mafia wasn't REALLY the mafia. I mean we are talking about space here. There's no such thing as mafia. In space, everyone's just trying to survive. How could you call a group, an outlaw organisation, just because ideologically or geographically, they are different from yourself? When, Gjallarhorn, itself, was corrupt. And the reason why they were corrupt, was because of a certain dirtbag leader who used underhanded tactics and "outlawed" weapons. Dissolving the Seven Stars system (well, because 3 family heads were lost), assuming the top post, and passing the leadership on to your right-hand (wo)man, doesn't make it democracy.
    It maybe a perfect ending, but it's left me wholly unsatisfied. Leaving only the semi-important characters around, essentially means they've killed off a possible sequel.

    It was a really good plot. No one was a hero, no one was innocent and no one was left unpunished.

    For me I loved the show, ending included. It was heartbreaking and Rustal, Julietta were boring and neither of them had any form of real weight when on screen. So having them come out on top in the end is what upset me about it but great show. Sincerely, I cried.

      Buy enough gunpla from the ibo series and demand calamity war to bandai and they would def make one
      They make more money in gunplas and that reflects on what manga,games or anime they would make

    Man this show was such an amazing slow burn. The last fight always brings me to tears. The build up and pay off is some of the best I've seen in modern anime. They could not live in the world that they wanted to create and died for their sins. The ultimate martyrdom. Thank you for the upload.
