- After going on a random mecha marathon, I ended up watching Iron Blooded Orphans. Having been surprised by it, I decided to bust out another review. I hope to do more of these in the future, since they're pretty fun to make. I currently have multiple videos in production, so expect some good stuff that'll hopefully be out in the upcoming weeks/months. Or don't. I don't care. Only a bit. K, I care.

IBO struck with me the most out of all the Gundam shows.
It was not about great heroes, super powered mechs or chose ones. It was about child soldiers and mercenaries. Dogs of war, the lowliest kind of warrior, a sell sword. These kids don't even fight for glory at first, but hell they fight for each other. Just a bunch of kids trying to find home.
At the end of the day, that's all who we are. We're not heroes, we're not gods, we're not the chosen ones. We're just Just some boys and girls trying to find our way home.
Season 2 is just one painful goodbye.

It was a Gundam was a pretty dark and realistic take on the Gundam series since Gundam Wing which has a similar theme but it is Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans that describes the brutality of war on both sides in the most brutal depiction of Gundam in recent memory. Plenty of people might get turned off due to the talk of politics in the Gundam series as they are a common trope in the Gundam saga.
As if losing Biscuit and watching his sisters suffer wasn't enough.

I got done watching season 2 and it's ending left a bitter sweet taste in my mouth
gsamalot season 2 was not as good as season 1. Season gets an 8/10 BUT season 2 gets a 4/10.
Lol the ending was great .. I hate when most anime end with all the protagonist surviving. But this show did it right on showing that in war death is always a giving n that war doesn't cared if your good or evil

I'm on episode three I need to know ....does the princess character become useful or is she just going to give speeches all season long. I grew up on gundam wing and I find the trope of the spoilt princess with a passion for stopping wars with pretty speeches...really annoying ...especially since the princess herself does not suffer like the soldiers do

that was literally the best part for me. theres nothing more real and felt than something you see in the worlds history hundreds of times. the good guys usually dont make it out alive. for me personally the ending made it easily one of my top 3 animes because the sense of realism its ending took on made me feel that much more respected as a viewer that the power of friendship and dumb asf anime tropes were ignored to wrap up a intense story.
A thing that I really loved in this anime was that most weapons were kinetic in nature and not energy-based.

"It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism" and "a revolution without ideas in just an armed insurrection" I think just about that sums up everything I thought about this show.

this was the first anime ive seen where the English actor for eren jager wasn't the main protagonists.
I watched this after binging all of Attack on Titan, and hearing his voice again shook me for a second lmao. Especially since he sounds exactly the same most of the time(especially whenever he yells "bastard!"). He definitely did a good job with the character tho, Eugene was one of my favorite secondary characters(Him, Shino, and Naze).

Great review, there were just some things you were a bit off on. Kudelia isn't a princess, she's just an ambitious girl from an influential family, and the only characters that are human debris are the ones with a red stripe on their jacket.

Just finished this during the quarantine. I was ready to write off the series outright because I didn't care about the Gundam designs at all. They were so far removed from the past designs that they seem to belong to a different franchise altogether. However, I now regard this as among the best, definitely in the Top 3. I'm still not overly hot on the mecha designs but it has softened a bit to the point that I'm eagerly awaiting for a RG release (I don't do MGs, PGs, or HGs)
The calamity war prequel will be a bang!
This show was a surprise for me as well.
Damn that editing was really good. It was a fun video to watch. The visuals were simple but appealing. Much better than what some other dudes do (slapping AMVs on the video track as background visuals :/ ).

I hated the ending at first, I was disappointed shocked but like Mikazuki said, the only life he had was fighting, he couldn't live a life past fighting. He died fighting. I prefer that recently I watched gundam Unicorn as IBO was the first gundam series I saw set a different high for the gundam pilot. Mikazuki isnt looking for peace he doesn't feel guilt he doesn't regret killing he wants a life he was promised and destroyed everything that got in his way. He couldn't see the future he wanted but his son did. I stil feel hurt from the ending but mikazuki lived a fighter and died a fighter he kills and destroys without question his goal along with orgas was to achieve a better life it cost them their lives but for future children they'll live a life where they wont need to fight just peace if most gundam pilots are whinning kids who want both sides to quit fighting questioning wether or not their on the right side then IBO is the only gundam series for me. Fighters with no side but their own no goals but their own they fought like humans surviving and wanting to live mikazuki will always be the greatest gundam pilot to me not the strongest or most important but the greatest just a boy who kills to live and lives to kill. For a future he never got to experience.

I would recommend watching the first three episodes of Iron-Blooded Orphans for you to get the tone of the show and then decide whether you want to continue or not. And yes, IBO is one of the good Gundam series out there, unlike G-Reco, AGE, Destiny, Victory and Wing.
+androyus Do I have good taste since I like SD and G? I've Just recently saw Unicorn and from that alone I plan to watch 00 and then the entire UC. As for this I've really enjoyed it, It's different from your normal Gundam but hey sticking to the norm hasn't always been a good thing I've never watched Seed or Age I've heard all about them -_- and wing from what I've re watched so far since I haven't seen it since I was 6 years old on Toonami it's Ok. H Gundam is still my personal favorite but I look forward to more of this and watching the UC, Turn A, and Build Fighters depending on which I can get access to a dub of first -_-

Your taste is fine. *SD Gundam* series is a goofy-fun kiddy show and *G* is pretty charming in its over-the-top-ness that you can rarely find in other Gundam series. I definitely prefer *G* over *Wing* or *AGE*. Btw, if you like G Gundam, check out *Gundam Build Fighters TRY* (not to be confused with the first *Build Fighters*, which is also good). The MC in that show is pretty much the disciple of Domon ;)
As for *SEED*, it was quite good. So good in fact that it revived the Gundam franchise after their slow run during *Wing*, *X* and *Turn-A* in the 90s. Not only that, SEED even revived/rejoice/re-energized the entire mecha genre in the 2000s due to its popularity. SEED is kind of a soft-reboot of the first Mobile Suit Gundam story but retooled for the newer generation that hasn’t watched the first Gundam in 1979 or 80s. Like the first Gundam, the story is heavy and angsty but in a good way. It presents the young pacifist MC’s pain of being forced to pilot a war machine, killing people, battling his childhood friend and his own race. He did all that to protect his friends (from the opposite race) aboard the ship that originally hosts the Gundam.
Also, when it comes to Gundam, don’t rely too much on English Dub because *1)* some series will take forever to get proper dub and some others are likely to never get a dub, ever *2)* the acting and line delivery of the English-actors are, most often than not, inferior to the original Japanese -actors especially during the emotional burst. Thanks to that, some emotional scenes and events really lost its punch. The Animax English Dub for *Build Fighters* is one of the worst examples of the bad English Dubs for Gundams. It was horrible. Absolutely horrible. Please go with the Jap Dub instead.

really omg idk if I should buy it today for 7.99$ each season's 1-4 I hear it's sad and ALREADY watched the spoilers from its a gundam he spilled the beans on 1 that he said was harder to watch idk it was a while ago I was only half paying attention but I know it's that chick makes ultimate sacrifice and it litetally made ppl cry lol and then season 2-4 rip ur heart out n toss it into a shredder lol. But wing is my 1st gundam 3rd anime lot of nostalgia and has been my fav I'm watching unicorn finally on Netflix hope they bring wing next cuz I lost my 3rd&4th DVD disc for the series sadly. The best parts the best fights etc all on THAT disc except the end and the endless waltz came with it. But yah idk SHOULD I buy THIS? Cuz I have lost interst in anime lately but I watch gundam always and dbz lol. Gotta save up for super lol 1 series at a time! Also trying to get avengers everything today lol black Fri but it's only like 5$off wtf that'd not a deal but gundam for 7$per season might be I never saw this 1 and didn't enjoy any others beside unicorn as much as wing. @@DJdeliverance You can watch the sub or dub for free on TH-cam at GundamInfo. It is superb, easily my current favorite of the series. I actually JUST finished rewatching it. And if you have the spare cash and want to own it, by all means it's worth it. But like I said, you can watch it on the channel Gundaminfo here on TH-cam for free. It's the official Gundam channel, so all the ad revenue and viewership go straight to the folks at Daisuke and Sunrise, so it's not like some rando is profiting off of it. Needless to say, this show is absolutely amazing. It has some flaws here and there, but it's a must watch for Gundam and anime fans alike. Hope this helps your decision

I’ve seen this anime way too many times but I wish that gundam had more attention because it deserves it
They developed each character well. The side characters actually did something. Thought Otgar was going to hook up with older women. She got the mechanic. Finally a guy with the harem actually banged the girls. New shonnen shows with harem are eh. They never bang the girls. Show is gritty and dark. Family bond. The second season was even harder. Very emotional show. One of the better Gundams

Watching in 2023. Just finished IBO. Loved the entire thing tart to finish (well, except the two early 80s over-the-top bad guys you mentioned). Would love to hear your take on the "divisive" second season.
Great review! I think you basically covered all of IBO's strengths and few flaws. The only tiny thing I'd amend is that Kudelia isn't so much a princess. She's more akin to the prime minster's daughter rather than royalty. But other than that nick pick, really good job!

I don’t usually watch anime but like damn, this show hit different. The visuals were killer and the plot was pretty decent. I’m not ready for season two, I know it’s going to be rough.

This gundam is one that focuses a lot on character and characters are what really make a story in my opinion
Iron Blooder Orphans is a slice of life story too. Just the slice is one of maladjusted, tortured and vengeful war orphaned youths ;P
I grown up on Gundam Seed/Destiny
I feel like IBOhase more depth andstorylinee untraditional. It's still has politics and hidden agenda. Mcgillies fareed was good character a bit obvious but he had interesting plot attachment. From.the begging I knew it was not going to be a happy ending. Every confrontation, Takkadan lost family/team members. Biscuits death was hard to swallow as the ques of his death were obvious. The most cry I got from witnessing turbines death. Naze was such a strong, eloquent character. His presence was the collosal benefit of plot development. Especially for Orga. Mika was dope, quite yet so powerful. His lack of talk but action just blows away. Orga , he is that kind of brother character we all want, he is genuine and stubborn ( we know obvious reasons why).
I personally think it was amazing , there were some sticky issues but I would say 5 star for me.
Shit this really made me cry at the end my stomach hurt and everything like out of all gundam anime this will always be the best I don’t know y but it will like it really hit different

Bro this was awesome. It effectively was the anti-Gundam Seed. The characters were fleshed out well and when they died you felt for them. It wasn't a bunch of crying and OP MS. It was as realistic as you could get in a Gundam series. Deaths were brutal and satisfying. I love Wing, 00, 0083 and 08th MS Team. This one is definitely in with them.

What I liked about this anime was how it made the viewers think what Tekkadan was doing was wrong, but it isn't in a different sense. It is a great anime show, it may seem at first glance that you won't be learning any moral lessons, but there are.

in season 2 they had to nuke tekkadan twice or three times one of them being directly on mikazuki(in the final battle). like this season is just atrocities mopped under the carpet by Rustal Elion and his gjallarhorn lackies.

Vega complex it is part of its own timeline, while there is confirmation nor de-confirmation if it takes place in the same cannon in anything like the universal century, however the colonization of mars lack of dates for the series and the fact it takes place 300 years after an undated war where gundam frames were a thing leaves most people to treat it as its own series, so it’s part of the calamity war timeline.

also Lafter is clearly the best pilot as she was able to fight Mikazuki to a standstill despite Mika using a Gundam and having the alaya-vijnana surgery three times.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but in gundam, the protagonist is good in the gundam because of his skill.....like....the suit could be OP but if the pilot isn't godlike then he's just gonna die on his first mission due to inadequacy. Which just makes your praise just seem been there done that with majority of Gundam.
Side note......that writer and director combination made me go from excited to completely ready to be turned off
Regarding the Princess, she's a character I have seen before but enjoyed the way she was done here and felt it worked well with the show. As for the pilot thing, I was mainly referencing the previous mecha shows I had watched and not specifically Gundam. A lot of those show focused on a mecha that was super powerful and the pilot literally just started piloting it with no prior training, yet would constantly win mainly because the mecha they were in was super special. They won by relying on the mechs special ability and luck, whereas here it was the pilot's knowledge and skill in combat that made him successful. I haven't seen a whole lot of Gundam series, so I cant say if that's a common thing or not, so I was mainly just comparing it to mecha shows in general.
I also figured the writer and director thing would probably turn some people off, that's why I made it a point to show their work to let people know what they may be in for. I personally know they're style isn't for everyone, but I enjoy them quite a bit.
it's fairly common in Gundam. It's excessively common, I know the trope you speak of but from the perspective of someone who's glanced at the gundam offerings, it seems to be second verse same as the first. the princess thing was in regards to Gundam Wing(and a few other gundams do it as well). where in wing Relina was the sour note to the anime despite the good idea and intentions in the writing.
The issue is, I've only liked 1 maybe 2 of their works. their first peace of work I ever saw was years ago(ToraDora) and that anime pissed me off, frustrated and made me sick to the mere idea I seeing anything by whoever made that show. So by association If there was a show of theirs I didn't care for, knowing it was from them made more ready to break it down as to why. etc..
I was looking forward to this show, but these overly familiar gundam tropes combined with both writer and director I think are genuinely bad has made me extremely cautious and now I'm going to be extra aware through out my viewing...
Ya, like I said, I haven't seen a whole lot of Gundam so I didn't know how common a thing it was. A lot of the mecha iv'e seen just revolved around a super robot that's better then everyone else's, so this was a bit refreshing to me.
The Toradora thing is funny to me, as it is one of my favorite anime lol. I will say regarding that show, it was an adaptation so the people who worked on it merely just transferred it over to anime form. Of course, with their own touches. So you may not really hate them, but the material. This was an original work involving the people I mentioned, so you might not have similar feelings regarding this one.
It seems to me that hardcore Gundam fans didn't care a whole lot for this one, but those newer to the series did. So I'm not quite sure how you'll feel if you decide to give it a go. I say just do the 3 eps and if you're not liking it, then just drop. Everyone's got their own preferences and what not.

TBH, I see Kudelia a way better character than Relena and Lacus. She is on her way to be like Queen Diana from Turn A and she actually learned to adapt and facing reality. Not like Relena and Lacus that always preaching about PEACE PEACE PEACE rather than just flatted out saying that "Oh, we had OP units at our disposal so can we negotiate?" By season 2, she was already mature enough to figure it out who wanted to use her for their own gain and refuse them already. She was half way till Queen Diana so she can develop more. Gotta give her credit that she learned much sooner than expected from a typical Gundam female protagonist though.

Mika is OP from the start for no specific reason.. in the space they pull out some incredible maneuvers without any prior experience or training.. this show is horseshit!

If you want to watch some good gundam series I suggest the gundam uc trilogy, some of them are very old but most of them have good stories, especially the ova's.

Lol I'm only 2 in and idk it's close to wing so I'm sure ill end up2 enjoy it unless it gets woke on me n goes sjw but that doesn't seem to be what's at all going on but the way they show the pilots spoils us cuz when I see this older style I'm like wow it's come far but it's always been known for great animations and fights. But yah idfk which is my fav cuz so far they're on par! Uc&wing my fav 2 and wing was my 1st so nostalgia factor.
