A tastefully edited clip from the series Mobile Suit Gundam The 8th M.S. Team in which Shiro Amada (Ez8) confronts Norris Packard (Gouf) in an abandoned city moments before the launch of the Kergeren and the Apsalus III. Many consider this to be the best combat sequence in the Universal Century timeline.
This footage is copyright material of Sunrise Animation Studio and Bandai Entertainment from episode ten "The Shuddering Mountain" Part 1

What are you talking about. Iron Blooded Orphans, while better than some of the other series, is still very much a "sword fight but with mecha" style gundam show. Whereas 08th MS Team is a bit closer to real mecha, like Patlabor. Though I'd still recommend watching IBO, cause it's essentially the Gundam version of Gurren Lagann but more grounded.

That’s always been the thing with this fight for me, the 08th team treat their MS and Guntanks like they’re large infantry and tanks, respectively. Packard understands that a mobile suit is a unique weapon with unique strengths and weaknesses. It wouldn’t have even occurred to most other pilots that they *could* lift the bridge, but Packard knows the limits of his machine and how it interacts with the battlefield.

In the original Gundam, Amuro was trying to figure out the Gouf's capabilities and was disturbed that it outperformed the Zaku II by roughly 20% in every category, then later determined that he'd underestimated it; fortunately for him, the Gouf's 75mm finger machine guns just didn't have the power to really threaten his Gundam and that was its only shortcoming.
The Gouf Custom has even better performance than the original Gouf, the longer barrels on the 75mm gatling gun mean greater firepower even though shooting the same ammunition, all combining into a package that, when piloted by someone who actually knows what they're doing is absolutely TERRIFYING. The MS-08 Efreet was an even higher performance derivative of the Gouf, but it was so expensive that they only produced eight of them... six of which survived the OYW, and at least one survived until UC 0096, where it absolutely wrecked much newer Feddie MS like the GM III. Heck, seeing a Juaggau tank a beam saber strike and just casually punch an MS to death shows what absolute beasts Zeon MS were in the OYW. The only reason we saw so many Zekes die in MSG is because the Gundam was protected by the best armor (and plot armor) and Amuro was simply the best pilot of all time.

Yes, it’s like the scene of EVA 02 lifting the battleship over its head and throwing it a short distance. A giant bio-humanoid mech, nonetheless even a Gundam, would be able to lift immense objects like that and I wish series used this more to create drama and cool scenes.

Packard was a classic fighter. Psychology, efficiency, measured use of resources and eye always on the prize.
Of course, he has that noble zeon "knighthood" air about him.
Salutes, seeking a glorious death, sparing the feelings of his lady. And a grudging respect to his adversary.
Norris Packard is the best example I've seen of just why war is awful; he was by all measures an intelligent, conscientious, noble and driven man.
And he died for nothing. Even his hard fought last stand doesn't save the Kurgaran. He believes he succeeds, and dies peacefully. But all that happened was a delayed massacre and the loss of yet another good man.

Gundam in general is a massive Anti-War message, you see how each Gundam Pilot, almost always someone who had no intention of joining a war in the first place is forced to fight, and suffers PTSD, stress, fear and loss as the series continues, it's a statement, War Is Hell, and it's not the people who are beaten who suffer the most, it's the people who set their lives aside to fight for what they think is right who suffer the most. You might even note that the Gouf starts conserving his ammo during the second half of the fight, saving it for the last gun tank. Which is why he switched to his sword.

His mission was never to destroy the 08th MS team just the Guntanks they were protecting. Which he accomplished so he completed his mission hence he won, but dying = the losing part. However because of Ginias' selfish desires the Federation orders a GM Sniper to fire on the Kergeren and destroys it which ultimately defeats the purpose of Norris' sacrifice which means his death was in vain.

It's also one of a couple that tells viewers that the federation is just as capable of inhumanity as zeon was. The 08th Team are about as outmatched as possible, being a squad who has to rely on squad tactics to be expected to survive fighting basic enemy suits suddenly going up against one of Zeon's most decorated ace pilots. Shiro and Sanders might be technical aces, but Packard is an Ace with a capital A. Norris had a mission he was determined to see done, but he cared for Aina's own feelings and the war wasn't an eternal one, so he did the only thing he realistically could do to satisfy a conflict of interests, hence why "he won".

He not only has crazy piloting skills, allowing him to fight and perform maneuvers like he was in space while dealing with Earth's gravity, he was able to fight against an entire squad of enemies while keeping track of environmental factors he can use to his advantage AND having the entire map in his mind's eye. Had his mission not been to destroy the Guntanks, he would have creamed the entire squad easily. The team only lasted as long as they did because Norris had the tactical disadvantage of having to go after the Guntanks, not to mention later he couldn't kill the man Aina loved.

It wasn't until the "Axis Shock," where several Newtypes united their powers to stop Axis from falling, that humanity was ultimately forced to recognize Newtypes, and once Laplace's Box was opened, it formed the foundation for colonial independence.

Tbh, for mecha, the 90s was a turning point between two stale eras, where everything was up in the air once again, which we hadn't really seen since the late 70s, and wouldn't again for over a decade.

Though I love Zeon, it's high command made a habit of wasting their best men on suicide missions, or stringing them out with no support. It's no wonder they lost the war.
Norris Packard? Forced into a suicide mission to create an opening for his comrades to potentially escape (Spoiler: it was for nothing, basically everyone died anyways).
Ramba Ral? Cut out of the political arena, ostracized, forced into military service, and then regularly refused support during his mission to eliminate the Gundam. Leading to his pointless and needless death.
The Black Tri Stars? Uselessly flung at the Gundam yet again.
The list goes on. Zeon's highly skilled, but limited manpower was drained needlessly in many operations like this.

    • @SudrianTales
      @SudrianTales 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

The problem with Zeon is Zeon itself, the structure was almost Nazi which sounds cool but is downright Medevial in the way production was handled. I bet you that like the Nazis, Zeon was never able to utilize its resources anywhere near 50 percent of what it should've been due to infighting and corruption so bad that Russia would find it too much.
Furthermore, it's actions against its neighbors (the other space colonies) turned valuable support to the Federation or neutrality instead of their arms.

That being said they have cooler snipers, so I'm totally a zeon loyalist.I also wonder what the casualties of the war, the fedies lost a ton of civies but they never mention military casualties. It seems the fedies had better tech but still seem to lose countless mobile suits for small units of Zeon forces. Am I right in that?

To those who have played GBO2 its actually crazy how similar to this scenes fight that they have based the game. The melee, can break parts, the tackle Packard does on the Gundam WR type. Suits seeming more mobile as they drop heavy armaments, the heat rod shorting out radar and the gouf custom being an assault type which makes it easy for it and it's responsibility to take out supporting fire units compared to the ez8 being a general front line built to fight those kind. It's even crazy as to how Packard was referred to as an ace pilot and once you've started to master game playing against noobs, you feel like an ace pilot lol the game isn't like A tier but it's free to play and is a respectable adaptation of what this show portrays these suits to be

    What a superb sequence!
This is quite literally the first time I have ever expierenced this genre of anime and I am blown right away! The choreography of the skirmish reflects everything I personally seek and enjoy from the action genre.
Knowing its Japanese origin, I am pleasantly surprised to see traces of Hong Kong action cinema within the gunplay; reminiscent of the 80's era heroic bloodshed films (i.e. John Woo, Johnny To, Tsui Hark, etc.). When the light colored mech is sliding down the water tower-looking structure while firing on his target was particularly awesome and, of course, immediately afterwards diving out of the sight of fire to a better position from the ground; very very stylish!
Yet, when the ammunition dried out and the focus became a duel, the Japanese heritage is completely celebrated here as two mechs squared off against one another like samurai of days past.
    Thanks so much for sharing!
