  • Using two Canon Rebel T7's to see how the kit lens vs a Canon 50mm Prime lens. Hear my thoughts on why you should trash your kit lens, but not buy the best possible lens... Hear me out. Definitely a good video for beginners.
    In this video you'll see me comparing photographs taken from the Canon Rebel T7's kit lens against a better-suited Canon 50mm Prime. The goal is to show you how much MORE important good glass is, and how capable your beginner camera is when you put new glass on it.

    ok I have the kit lens good video now let get down to work when I shot in my back yard I noticed that that the shadows were really dark in automatic mode, now we knows the problem, how do I compensate for the darks and the lights being washed out w/ this camera lens, question: I was shooting w/ the view finder, if I was shooting w the live mode would I be able to see the over/under saturation on the lcd ? I would think that what you see is what you get, is this a true statement ? next in manual modes what should I be shooting with.to get a better image?😕

    I’m finding this long after you made the video, but great video. I have an old Nikon that I did the same with, put the kit lenses in a box and put a 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm prime in the bag. Always loved those $200 and below lenses. I know there’s better than the f1.8 lenses I shot but while learning and practicing, I couldn’t justify spending the money on higher end glass to my wife… I am now in college, funded by the VA, so when I was sent my school supplies for my photography class, I was sent the cheapest kit the VA could find because my old Nikon is struggling and needs some TLC to keep going. I am now shooting a T7 in my college photography classes. Being the government, they can afford to send people all over the world for symposiums but they won’t spring for a $130 - $200 prime lens. Well, back to saving pennies. I’m much too old to be a broke college kid.

      @@MikeL0084 Ah, yes with the t7 crop your 50 shoots at about an 75-80mm equivalent. For me I think the benefit of the picture quality is more of what I want people to go home with.
      As for my own usage, I’m not upset about it. I am not at all a fan of the original kit lens quality at all. I’d rather take a few steps back with better glass than use the kit lens.

    Nice video I just got the 1.8 lense 2 days ago and I wanted to know how to get the background to blur

    • @PhotoMeLarry
      @PhotoMeLarry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d say shoot a picture of a subject 7 feet away or less, set your aperture as low as you can. 1.8 is the lowest you can go, but that’s where you’ll see the most bokeh (blur) behind your subject.
      1.8 should give you plenty blur, maybe even too much. So take a few shots at different f stops til you get familiar with your bokeh results and distances to subject :)

    Great video! This model will work with my T7,correct - EF 50mm f/1.8 STM? Thanks!

    • @PhotoMeLarry
      @PhotoMeLarry  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, these cameras support EF lenses just fine. Just know the T7 isn’t full frame, so there will be a slight magnification. I believe it’s about 1.6 increase. So your 50mm EF will produce what would look like roughly 78mm lens from the spot you took the photo. But, what you see through the viewfinder IS what your image will be, there’s nothing to fear.
      The quality difference is so worth it to me. I exclusively use EF lenses with my rebel and only have the stock lens in case I do another comparison video in the future 😂

    Hi Larry I have the exact same camera and still have the kit lens for it. I saved up and bought the sigma 85 1.4 and the bokeh is a beast but when I place it on M on the settings it messes up my focus. I took it to a camera shop and they just told me to use the no flash setting. It works perfectly but I can’t change my settings for it bc it’s on Auto should I upgrade my camera ? My upgrade I wanted to get was a full frame Canon Rp or R

    I just bought the 50mm lens. Any tips for family pictures at a state park with a lot of big trees. I bought the rebel t7 but haven’t really gotten around to play with it a lot. Thank you in advance

    • @PhotoMeLarry
      @PhotoMeLarry  ปีที่แล้ว

      If all the family is on one line shoulder to shoulder you can use lower aperture’s and get good images. But if folks are standing behind each other or their faces are different distances away from the lens, you may want to use 5.6 or higher, maybe even f8. When I first started doing group shots I missed focus a lot not keeping this in mind.
      If you do want good details of the family and the environment without background blur, have some fun between f11 and f16 as long as there’s some good light available :).
      I’ll leave the rest up to you but that’s what I find ruins family shots the most. Using an f stop where the depth of field is narrow and some members of the family are beyond that range slightly.

    • @christinalanfranco3166
      @christinalanfranco3166 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @PhotoMeLarry
      @PhotoMeLarry  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@christinalanfranco3166 Ah ok understood.
      These numbers are your Fstop setting, or the "Aperture". It's the size of the hole your lens opens or closes for letting light in. When the hole is small (which is usually a big fstop number like 8 or more) you will get more subjects in detail (even if they're far from the camera). If the number is low (1.8 for example) it means the hole is pretty large, letting in a lot of light, this is mostly what makes the images where a single subject or person may be in crisp focus, but the background is all blurry and creamy like a "professional photographer" took the photo.
      The only thing I will reccomend because if you're new I dont want to overwhelm you with advice. I say learn how to put your camera into Av mode if it has it, and try taking pictures with different values. Low numbers and high numbers and look the photos. I believe if you do this, you'll quickly understand how this setting affects how much of your image is in detail and how much isnt.
      Ping me any time for any questions or advice, if I can help you I always will.

    Is getting the f1.4 50mm really worth double the price for the f1.8 50mm?

    • @PhotoMeLarry
      @PhotoMeLarry  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good question, and the answer is really (it depends)...
      The one I have I got second hand for only 50 ish more dollars than the 50mm brand new, so that was reasonable to me. It was in good condition from what I remember. If you want it brand new, its around $350 - $400 vs $100 so I'd probably pass if I was exclusive to only owning never before used gear.
      I'm a bit more thrifty though personally because I realized one day, "all of my gear is used, and it all works". So I shop for good deals on used more often than I buy brand new now. Hope this helps!

      I'm not entirely sure I understand what you're asking here, but I'll take a swing at it anyway.
      If you want a Rebel T7 with the nifty 50, and not the kit lens in one purchase... I think your best bet is ebay or second hand marketplaces.
      I dont think there's a package that comes the way you're asking out of the box. But you could buy a rebel t7 body, and then buy the lens. Thats my best understanding of the answer I believe you're hoping for.
