I imagine Hector had that picture of himself taken while he was traveling so that he could send it in a letter back to Coco and Imelda.

If you watch the ending of COCO, Spoilers, when Miguel is playing the guitar for his family the next year, Hector splits the guitar in two. His that is meant to be with him when he died, and the mortal form that Miguel now uses. This video Seamus actually is spot on!

Huge plot hole has been solved by Seamus. I’ve only watched Coco once and I loved it but because of that, I didn’t notice when Ernesto stole the guitar from Hector. I only caught when he gave the guitar to someone off stage. It’s always the little things

this bothered me so much the two times i watched it! i felt robbed and slightly disappointed in pixar for glossing over such a crucial plot point, and i tried to piece together exactly why the guitar took Miguel to the land of the dead for DAYS. this is the explanation that not only i needed, but the movie did. an extra scene or two explaining this would have added so much more to the story, maybe you have a future in pixar’s story writing ahead of you... thanks seamus!

I hear that, but at the same time, maybe they felt that explaining too much would take from the main story? And leaving a few holes gives space for theories and explanations by the audience. I really am glad that Seamus made a video on this, and I think the explanation could’ve been okay in the movie, but I honestly kinda prefer them leaving it open for people to figure out.
I think in order for it to count as stealing from the dead, it has to have meant a LOT to the said dead person.

LukeWarmLava I mean, that’s basically what it is. While it’s technically a theory, there’s probably enough evidence present to say that this is canon, and Seamus is just the guy who tracked it all down and drew the connection out for everybody else.

I have a thought... How come literally almost everyone in Cocoa was young when they died we know why Hector died young but what about everyone else? I mean we know that they don't take the form of their younger self because Grandma Coco was an old woman in the Land of the Dead at the end of the movie... Am I missing something?
I think you take on the form of when you remember looking best. Coco had dementia, so she doesn't remember looking her best.

I always tought that Hector's wife(totally forgot her name) cursed the guitar because she was angry that Hector left her and Coco ti pursue his musical career and never turned back
And i think that part of her curse was something like "no one who shares my blood would sing with that guitar as long as they are alive"

I actually thought that the curse was placed by the matriarch of the family. A curse on any of her descendants who chose music over family? That was the impression I had gotten, anyway, especially since one of the driving conflicts was her withholding her blessing because he wouldn't give up his music to return.

It's intriguing but the physical things don't go with you when you die. Obviously hector had a VERSION of everything that he was holding, but his clothes are still on his dead body. I still believe that the guitar could be cursed by this, but the guitar 'wanting to go back' can't be right.
4:30 Now You’ve Got My Attention
I never had the impression Miguel was the first one to get stuck, only that it doesn't happen a lot. The cleric is so nonchalant about the curse and knows how to reverse it. He probably wouldn't know if it hadn't happened before. Plus the shock situations can be explained away. In the first shock situation, at the cemetery, Miguel is super scared and loud. The woman who helps him out of the grave only starts screaming after Miguel screams, and the head only whoas after Miguel whoas. As soon as the kid hides behind a tombstone, everything's back to normal.
The literal jaw dropping is comparable to someone bringing a crocodile to a pet boarding facility. It's not like you don't know that people make odd pet choices, you're just not used to them. (And you need to call someone on the crazyperson.)
Also Ernesto de la Cruz... Well, of course everyone's heard of Miguel. His family, their flying cat monster and the police are all over town asking for him. They were on a tight schedule, after all.
As for the actual theory, it bothered me more that Miguel could still hold onto it after he turned spirit-y when people walked right through him. Shouldn't it slip right through his fingers?
The 'plot hole' itself was never an issue with me, because the offerings Miguel grabs don't technically 'belong' to the dead. They weren't in the dead person's possession when they were alive. Simple as that.
Combined with what I said above, the curse for stealing from the dead when you're supposed to give to the dead could be just that. An actual act of grave-robbery on Día de los Muertos would be rare enough to warrant shock.
So yeah, I didn't really get what the fuss was about. To me, it was clear as day. XP
However, I still like your theory. If it's taken into consideration that the guitar is stuck somewhere in between dimensions, the fact that Miguel can hold it makes a lot more sense. It's like all those tombstones. And that's also what some other commentors pointed out, about the guitar not traveling with him... It did. It just didn't become invisible because it was like a corpse. Chances are that, if Miguel hadn't dropped the guitar before starting to glow, the guitar would have split the way it does in the ending scene, when Héctor 'takes' the guitar from Miguel. The material body would have dropped to the ground, and Miguel's spirit self would have clutched a spirit guitar. All the offerings work that way, too. If Miguel hadn't panicked, he probably would have been able to pick the guitar's spirit off the wall, and have it materialize again once he steps onto the marigold bridge.
And POOF he was there!

Why do I feel this theory for Seamus is the equivalent to an oddly satisfying video for him
I honestly always imagined that Hector got the picture from Imelda. Like, she probably still hoped he would come home at some point (even though she most likely wouldn’t admit it) and perhaps kept the photo on her. Then when she sees Hector in the land on the dead she gets both hurt and mad and tells him to never talk to her again, although Hector snatches the photo in some way and that’s how he got it. It would also explain why she still calls him the love of her life. Although I had a small theory of my own about Imelda placing the curse on the guitar, yours seem much more likely. Admittedly, great video!
When Miguel just arrived to the land of the dead and was still in the cript, why was the guitar still in the living world? Also we can clearly see that the guard picks up the guitar

I think the soul of the guitar has to be brought with by a soul of a dead person.. (in which miguel was not dead) maybe that is why at the end of the movie when hector saw his guitar, he was able to pick up the soul of his guitar from miguel..

I had also thought of something like that (Coco is my favorite movie EVER and I'm totally obsessed with it), you're absolutely right for me 💓 I think that Miguel was cursed because now Ernesto had stolen Héctor's guitar and had become his, BUT his family (of Miguel) could give him the blessing because in any case the guitar was in fact of a member of his family, that is Héctor 😊 Moreover, of course, the explanation given in the movie, which merges with your own gives the right answer to the question 😊
And let’s not forget - at the end of COCO when Miguel is singing the movie’s finale song, the deceased Rivera family members join their living members (unaware) in the celebration. While Miguel is singing & playing the guitar, Hector is able to take the spirit form of the guitar’s and play alongside Miguel. Showing that curse has been lifted and the guitar is back where it belongs - in the possession of the Rivera family in life & with Hector in the land of the dead. WHY CAN’T SCHOOL BE THIS MIND BLOWING?! EXCELLENT JOB PIXAR & EXCELLENT BREAK DOWN VIDEO!

I think that the elder wand Harry used to fix his wand at the end of the book is fake. I think Dumbledore knew that at some point Voldemort would start looking for the elder wand and it would trace all the way back to Dumbledores grave. So on the night Dumbledore was killed, he didn’t have the real elder wand but a fake one. U may be thinking “how did it fix Harry’s wand then?” Well I think the answers pretty obvious. I think Dumbledore used a Phoenix feather for the wand core. This could be true as Dumbledore has a Phoenix and it would be way easier to use this instead of any other animal. And I think because he used a Phoenix it made the wand more powerful when it came to healing spells which is why it fixed Harry’s wand.
In the film, Harry snaps the wand and although it didn’t happen in the books, I think it snapped way too easily. I mean this is a wand that has been with some of the most powerful wizards of all time and therefore it must have been in way more battles than Harry’s wand (which broke in his seventh year) not to mention Ron’s. so my question is, how has Harry just snapped it in half like a twig?
Answer: BECAUSE THIS IS A FAKE ELDER WAND!!!
Also I believe that the real elder wand did belong to Voldemort since he killed gregorivich (sorry if I spelt wrong) and when Grindelwald stole it, he didn’t win it from him he just stole it. So when Voldemort killed gregorovich (again sorry if I spelt wrong) it actually belonged to Voldemort. I mean even if the elder wand didn’t belong to Voldemort, it still would have been really powerful but it never was and in the movies it acted as literally a normal wand. Also IT STARTED BREAKING WHEN HE USED IT!!! LIKE IT LITERALLY STARTED CRACKING!! He then blamed this on him not truly owning the wand which makes him kill Snape but even if he didn’t WHY DOES THIS MAKE THE WAND BREAK??!!!! I mean loads of people must have used other people’s wands and they never broke it.
But because dumbledores no wand maker he made the wand so it performed magic but not to be durable and used as a wand that u actually use. Well I hope ur convinced and u may be wandering “where is the real elder wand then?” Well I have no idea cus I didn’t think about that so Yh seamus can think about that

About the second question, wizards can learn to perform wandless and non verbal Magic, so you can just cast an expelliarmus without a Word with the tip of your finger, if you are talented and dedicated enough
camilo cocconi yes that is true but if so Why in the Harry Potter series does dumbledore or Voldemort never use the ability to move objects. I mean it would have been very useful especially in the order of the Phoenix. and when does harry ever learn this at hogwarts. Because where else would he learn it? Thanks for replying anyways
it is possible that it is easier to focus spells through the wand but in certain situations and using powerful magic a wizard/ witch can bypass the wand.

This is a good theory, but it has one problem. You say the guitar took Miguel to the land of the dead so it could travel there and be reunited with Hector, but it stays in the land of the living. We know this because the security guard picks it up off of the floor.
He dropped it after the security guard comes and he gets scared. this leaves it in a state between the land of the living and the land of the dead therefore Miguel could have picked it up again but he didn't. the security guard then came and picked it up to put it back in it's place.
I think it's kind of stuck because of how it was cursed. It exists as a dead object for the Riviera family but a living object for the Delacruz family. When a Riviera picked it up, it wanted to be taken to the land of the dead but because it was taken as Hector died, it's still not technically supposed to be in the land of the dead. It's just cursed. It tries to go to the land of the dead with a Riviera but it can't because it's still a living object. Basically Delacruz caused a glitch. Nice going.

I’m specifically stating the scene when Miguel goes to the land of the dead for the first time, the guitar stays put and the people put it back. Then when he gets back to the living, the guitar is still there for him to strum again. If people take the possessions and the guitar wanted to go back, why didn’t it go back with Miguel?
