I think Anger actually meant well and was just misguided. He is, well, Anger, so of course he would be prone to impulsiveness and acting before thinking.
And without joy there or the core memories to let her go on auto pilot...
I think that as well and besides a true villain have to stick through all of the movie and not regret they’re decisions near the end of the movie

He just didn't know. This video came out in 2016, and Coco came out a year later. He wasn't sure who the villain would be.

It's because of Joy that Sadness couldn't help Ryleigh, before the events of the movie even happened. ANd sadness is actually the protagonist, so that would make joy the antagonist.
1:51 "Antagonist" and "villain" do not mean the same thing.
A villain is a character who is inherently evil; the predefined "bad" to rival the predefined "good"
An antagonist is a term used strictly in story planning and analysis. Simply put, the protagonist is the main character; the character whose story we follow throughout the movie/series, whereas the antagonist is the character or force working AGAINST the protagonist. The antagonist isn't inherently evil, it's just the force that is preventing the protagonist from reaching their end goal.
A protagonist doesn't have to be inherently "good", think Walter White, Megamind or Maleficent. They're all villains, but we follow their story primarily so they're still the protagonist.
So yes, Joy can be a villain and still be the protagonist.

I actually like the idea of Inside Out not having a specific villain character. Not every story needs to be good vs evil, and honestly it's a refreshing change.

In regards to the part where joy is mentioned as a possible antagonist, I feel like joy (or any other protagonist) COULD also be the antagonist. Sometimes a person causes their own trouble by (in joy's case) forcing themselves to be happy all the time without feeling sadness or anything. Not allowing any other feeling, sweeping things under the rug. Like, a person can be their own enemy. You know?
As for the part about Anger, i don't know. I feel like he has just a very bad temper and he didn't have Joy to like control him. I don't think the emotions can feel jealousy or the drive to take someone else's place. But your theory is interesting, nonetheless!

mOST GOOD vILLAINS USUALLY HAVE MOTIVE for their actions where they believe what they are doing is for the better. And they are still the antagonist. Joy everytime she does something antagonizing it back fires on her and makes things worse for her , or Sadness, ro even Bing Bong.

Antagonists aren't always the same as villains

Maxine Grey true they are just causing the problems. I think that the conflict is the accident that happens with the core memories, because the antagonist isn't always a person. It's hard to describe but we discussed this honors English class😂

I think the leading emotion in a head is determined by the emotion with the most memories tied to them. When we saw all those bubbles inside Riley's head, it was clear the majority of her memories were yellow (joyous)

The villain of a story doesn’t always have to be another character. I think the villain is the whole moving process to San Francisco because that’s what started Riley to feel unstable. She hated the new house, she hates school, the moving van with all her things never shows up. She tries to see the bright side but just being there bums her out every step of the way. Yes, anger wanted to be in control but he didn’t intend to change things this drastically and he didn’t actually throw joy and sadness out of HQ. He was actually pretty unnerved by the fact they were gone.

I know why joy is the head of HQ: in the beginning of the movie she is the first one that comes into her brain and starts to control her...thats all the evidence I have so far though

And the first emotion the mom felt was sadness.
Inside Out doesn't have a villain. The antagonist is time.

Depends on whether it's primary or secondary psychopathy. My best guess is that there is no fear or sadness, and the remaining three emotions are triggers, not characters.

I always thought joy was both the protagonist and the antagonist at the same time. See, there is this thing called "character vs self" conflict, and it's actually used a lot. It's where a character battles with themselves to do what is right and also to do what is wrong. In some instances it's just used for the plot and there is a different character that is the main protagonist or antagonist but in some cases the person battling with themselves is both the protagonist and antagonist and it makes for a very interesting story.
Anger and Joy are the true villains, because they're the reason why Riley's mind went haywire!!!!!!!!!

The Supercarlinbrothers have done a video about that. (Interestingly, the girl playing Riley actually did reach puberty during the filming, so she had to retrain her voice to make herself sound younger)

I also think that the brain the whole adventure of sadness and joy was the brains way of telling joy that you need to feel sad to fully function. Notice every time joy try's to get back to headquarters it's a fail.
I love how when the emotions mess up and rylee can't feel anything, it perfectly describes what depression is like. And for that deep of a meaning in a Pixar movie is why is one of my favorite Pixar movies.
I guess with Inside Out they're trying to be more subtle than normal, so they hid the villain. Good points about Anger though!!

The way they decide who's mostly in charge in HQ is for example if something bad happened someone who had anger as their main emotion would get match maybe try and find someone to blame but someone with sadness as their main emotion might run to the room and crying to their pillow

I've always thought that Riley (and thus also ALL the emotions) were the "villain'. I liked this because the turmoil that Riley goes through leads to a short depression which is quite a new and relevant subject for Pixar to deal with. The thing about depression is that it is not a fight between the hero and the villain but rather that things just don't add up internally, that you can't control your emotions, that your expectations are too high or something else. So it is an internal battle between wanting to do good and not being able to do so. As the film shows all the emotions want what is best for Riley but they are not able to do so because they are not able to work together in the start of the film, and as Riley's feelings becomes more complex her emotions have to do the same. Thus her depression ends when she are able to combine her emotions, and she/the emotions is the hero and the villain for solving and causing the problem.

I would say Joy is the antagonist, if there is one. She thought she was the most important one out of all emotions, always wants her way to be followed, and even left Sadness just so she can return to headquarters. And let us not forget she wants Riley all to herself. One of the reasons I actually like this film is because of Joy's character development. The real enemy is herself, and she realizes that by the end.
Although, I really don't consider her as a villain. More like a "real" character that teachers us self realization and that we can't always get what we want. It's a beautiful film that teaches us reality in which flaws exist in everyone, even the protagonist.

Have any of you thought that this all could’ve happened because if puberty? Like, anger takes charge of your emotions, you get disgusted by some of your favorite foods and the only missing emotion of puberty is sadness, which you get later on in your growth cycle but the main emotion you feel is anger. Then, at the end of inside out you get the new board, and you get the puberty button which was probably already activated and they had a chance to see it when Disgust said the thing about the puberty button.

An antagonist is not necessarily a bad guy it's just the person that opposes the protagonist or what they believe in so the most likely answer is sadness he's the complete opposite of joy

FadedCanine AJ I believe that joy is the reason sadness was as depressing as she was. In Riley's mom's head, her sadness didn't seem so depressed. She was doing what one of her emotions should be doing; making sure things are going as they should. I think joy was a bit of a pushover.
