    After stealing a guitar, getting cursed and being sent to the Land of the Dead… Miguel must find his great great grandfather, with the help of Hector, to allow Miguel to return home!! And this leads them to cross paths with a fading skeleton by the name of Chicharrón. In a shocking turn of events, by the end of their encounter... what is left of Chicharrón disappears leaving Miguel shocked. Where did Chicharrón go? Did he go somewhere good, bad or is he just gone forever? I had to know more.

      Haku infinite well I mean, that’s based on the idea of this movie. But in Catholic beliefs, anyone who believed in Christ can be saved. So it’s still a plausible theory and he was sent to purgatory so his soul would be cleansed from the evil that he did. This movie just shouldn’t be taken as facts when discussing real beliefs.

      I think the guitar was cursed because Ernesto Delacruz stole it from Hector when he killed him. In the movie, it is mentioned that stealing from the dead instead of giving to the dead will result in a curse. My question is, if this is the reason, did Ernesto visit the land of the dead before Miguel as a living being, or was his untimely death the result of the cursed guitar?

    • @abbiekirschning850
      @abbiekirschning850 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    • @tjanderson3439
      @tjanderson3439 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      the guitar was taken from the original owner, Miguel's great great grandfather, and then, it was taken by them seconds before death. Miguel thought that Ernesto was his great great grandfather, who was the second one to have the guitar taken from him, but it was really Hector, the first one. This means that Hector's great great grandson regains the guitar once stolen from him, a curse was placed on the FAMILY because of this stealing back of the amazing instrument. I know this is a really bad explanation, and I just came up with it, as my own theory, but I hope it helps.

    No, I don't think Chicharrón went to heaven in the first place, here in Mexico the Aztecs (or Mexicas, this is the actual name) didn't have a place that they defined as a heaven. Here in their traditions were actually 4 different places a soul could go after death DEPENDING on the death they had. The first one is Tlalocan, guarded by the god Tlaloc, god of water and rain. Here the souls of those who died drowned or by any kind of water related incident lived. The second was Tonatiuhichan, with the god Tonatiuh that represented the sun. Here lived the ones that died being sacrificed or in combat. Then there's the Chichihuacuauhco, the place where one children went to, where they could develop enough so they could have a second chance in life and go back to the womb of another woman. And finally, and the most known, Mictlán, guarded by Mictlantecuhtli and Mictlancihuatl, here lived the souls of those who died by normal causes, like age or diseases. So, according to my culture I think he went to Mictlán, as he is shown to be old in the Land of the Death

      The difference is that Day of the Dead is influenced by both Aztec customs and the Catholic celebration of All Souls Day and All Saints Day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead

    • @elvarodriguez7683
      @elvarodriguez7683 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Nigel Lobo this is controversial point for Mexicans, since the Catholic Church is pretty big here, but also we don’t like talking about Spain when it comes to our traditions so we often pretend it isn’t there.
      IMO the holiday start with the Aztec and Náhuatl so it makes more sense to follow their believes for this story. The overall traditions and aesthetic of the day changes and mixes between catholic and indigenous from region to region but I don’t think it would affect the result or the mechanics of death just by adding a cross or two to the altar.
      Also some people celebrate the saints day separately so. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    I love this theory, however there is one thing that concerns me... if the land of the dead is purgatory: where souls destined for heaven undergo purification, WHY IN THE NAME OF SANITY is De La Cruse there???

    • @markcobuzzi826
      @markcobuzzi826 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      My only guess is based on the testimonies of canonized Catholic saints like Pio of Pietrelcina. Padre Pio was a priest who allegedly bore the Stigmata and claimed to have received graces from God that allowed him to perceive guardian angels, read people’s souls, witness the salvation of souls in Purgatory, etc.
      (Now with people like Padre Pio, the Fatima children, or Saint Faustina, the Catholic Church categorizes their stories as “private revelation”, meaning that individual Catholics are not required to believe their testimonies at face value or base their lives around it, since it is not official Church dogma. By canonizing them as saints, though, the Catholic Church is saying that these people still have a reputable-enough background in its eyes, so that they could be still considered sane and sufficiently trustworthy when describing their “private revelations”).
      So when I was looking up some of Padre Pio’s claims, he said that some of the souls who visited him were of people about to die in mortal sin, but are saved because of God intervening at the last moment and offering them a chance to repent. Because God and eternity exists outside of time itself, it is said that prayers can even help someone who died long ago in the past and a soul can have a lifetime’s worth of conversation with God even in their literal final moments of unconsciousness before death. Pio even claimed "I believe that not a great number of souls go to hell.
      God loves us so much. He formed us at his image. God loves us beyond understanding. And it is my belief that when we have passed from the consciousness of the world, when we appear to be dead, God, before He judges us, will give us
      a chance to see and understand what sin really is. And if we understand it properly, how could we fail to repent?"
      With all of that in mind, and knowing that Coco obviously takes some of its own creative liberties with the holiday and religious beliefs, my guess is that the villain of Coco is currently on his way to eternal damnation, but he was still allowed to reside in the land of the dead for a while, leading to him basking in his desired fame one last time before the truth of his sins are to be revealed. After that, the villain is still allowed to exist in the land of the dead, but the truth of what he did is known and he is forced to see how meaningless his selfish pursuits were in the end, which forces him to reconsider his actions. This may or may not lead to him giving up and considering repentance, so he won’t damn himself when his “final death” comes.
      Overall, my best guess would be that him being allowed to stay there for a while could be interpreted as the higher power in this movie giving him one last gesture of mercy.

      I think this is the bond between the death and Heaven or Hell, because this place is a place of rest not paying for the sons, and the True death is a passage for the judgement, Think about, we forget people not because we are evil but because is natural, we dont remeber of our ancestrals

    I think the final death in Coco sees you off to heaven, because viewing Coco the land of the dead is thriving with thousands of those departed. There were things in that city that were required for one to thrive including restaurants, public transportation and a central government . I think in the final death is you stop existing as you, which I understand is scary, but you are reincarnated in a new identity. Essentially the old you is forgotten to time but the new you is born with new connections and memories to be made.

    The final death for me and for many others signifies the one true death we will all face in the end. someone who has physically died still lives on in the memories and thoughts of those who knew them or knew of them. They stay alive by the acknowledgement of those still around to remember them whether they remember that person for the good that they did or the bad they brought. Once that person can no longer be recalled by any living person, they experience the final death because they cease to exist through any medium whatsoever.

  • @Spineless-Lobster

    I always thought that the final death was the land of the forgotten from The Book Of Life, because in both instances it’s where the souls are forgotten and I thought where Hector and Miguel were was the land of the remembered where they would slowly fade away if forgotten. If you look at the land of the remembered and the “underworld” of Coco, they look pretty similar both glowing, tons of buildings, celebrations, and plenty of colour! Plus it has the same orange petals as the ruler of the land of the remembered (sorry I forgot all the names, I haven’t watch Coco or The Book Of Life in a while) so it would make sense.

    So in Moana, when you watch the “I know the way song”, the boat which Moana uses to travel across the sea isn’t anywhere to be seen. That made me speculate that maybe the grandmother built the boat for Moana or even better, that she tried to venture out and return the heart of Te Fiti when she was young. Perhaps she was even the “chosen one” before Moana was, but failed at it. That may also explain why she is certain that Moana was the chosen one after she saw Moana rescue the turtle.

    I know this video is meant to be about a movie about the celebration and understanding of death and memory but half way through I started having existential dread and realized that eventually I will die, I'm only 19 now but anything could happen to me even at a young age.
    How does it feel?
    Where do you go?
    how do you see your own mind just, stopping, your view fading, your memories and knowledge, does it stay or does it go?
    Who are we really? have we actually lived over and over through reincarnation? or is it one time and then your done?
    do you become a star? do you live in the clouds? do you wander the world as an aimless spirit that no one can see or hear but can be sensed?
    what is, death?
    an answer we may never receive.

    I had the same question, but my own solution to it was that once you are forgotten from the land of the living and leave the land of the dead you are brought back to the over world to be reborn so that you can have a new life and gain more people for you to remember and in return remember you when you go, once you enter the final stage of death you are stripped of your experience, memories, and past so that you may begin a new future. And since your past memory will be completely gone from the over world there would be no way to come across your past life in any way

    That makes a lot of sense. If the land of the dead is purgatory it would make sense that the less well known people would stay for less time as they likely lived simple lives whereas someone famous would stay longer because Fame and fortune often corrupts. So in retrospect it's a way to ensure everyone is just definitely in the right place when they pass on for the final time

    Hello.
    Ok, multiple Coco questions that need answering.
    1. What do the colorful marking on the skelotons signify? Are they just part of the culture and everyone has them, do the colors or shapes symbolize anything?
    2. What determines the age/appearance of the skeletons? Is it when they die, as that would explain coco, and hector. And probably others, but there are ALOT of middle aged people and children and entire families in the land of the dead and its hard to believe that many people died young. Could it be what you choose to appear of something else?
    3. Why does Hector walk strange. I havent thought about it much but now it is really bugging me because hector never realized that he did after 80 years or whatever being dead, and he is the only one who does.

You certainly did your research, and correctly. :) That's actually what I figured the final death was too! I deduced this in a similar way. I knew Mexican culture was a combination of Aztec and Catholicism, and after speaking to my fellow Catholic who grew up in Mexico, all the info made sense. :)

    If the Final Death is the final transition to heaven then why is fading treated as a bad thing? Why would anyone want to rescue Hector from that fate? Why does the Final Death only happen when no one remembers you?
    I'm sure it took more liberties than Coco with these traditions but in The Book of Life the Land of the Dead was separated into two parts: the Land of the Remembered(which was shown to be a place of constant celebration) and the Land of the Forgotten(which showed everyone there as being miserable and twice showed someone turn to dust). Book of Life, just like Coco, treated being forgotten as a VERY bad thing though with Book it seemed the characters knew what being forgotten would mean for them.

    Hello Isaac! Thanks for another mind-blowing video! I suspect your theory is partly right. Being the crossover trashcan I can be, I do think the Land of the Dead in Coco and the land of the Remembered in The Book of Life (TBOL for short) are the same place. But TBOL showed us also the Land of the Forgotten. I think our dear Chich went there. Only when you complete the cycle from being Remembered-Forgotten Cycle, you can finally be free to go to Heaven or Hell (which would be the Land of the Cursed Jorge Gutiérrez revealed to the TBOL fandom).

    That death is everytime present, happened also in Europe, especially after the black death. In art people starts to give death a character and somehow a face. Theses "danses macabre" and the sentence "memento mori" (remember you're mortal) and "the divine comedy" if Dante aligheri appeared and people changed their mind about death. Mexico went this way to, they keep their opinion about death with the day of death, Europe almost forgot it but there are a little pieces that remember about that episode of "memento mori" like the German musical "Elisabeth" about the life of the Austrian empress Elisabeth (nicknamed Sissi)
