    I have the 2015 Lariat with the 5.0, A road trip vacation last year 2700 miles of mostly highway 17.6 mpg, at home mostly country roads and some city 16.1 mpg; It is a truck and gas mileage is the price of admission. I did my review after 3 years and I can't complain, it's a damn fine truck; I'm looking forward to the next gen F150 in 21 or 22

    The F-150 V-8 was the engine I wanted in my new truck, however, I haven't had one issue with the 2.7L in my 2018 F-150 XL RC SWB FX4 10-Speed. The oil was still full at 4,980 miles when I changed it. No rattles, no whining. I installed a dash mat before my dash warped. DEARBORN Build Date: 09/18

    My 18 F150 5.0 4x4 will get 22mpg under 70mph. Once you hit 70 it drops. I average about 20 mpg but that is mostly highway. I'm happy with it

      Tow over 2000 lbs. you can always tell when someone’s never driven a Ecoboost F150, they say stupid things, like I had one of them and you had to rev the crap out of to get power or they won’t tow,,,,, the 5.0 is an awesome engine, but haven’t had to do anything wit my lil 2.7 it hasn’t handle easily!

      Kevin Anglin 5.0 rated to tow 10,000 lbs to 11,000 lbs. A full 2000 lbs more than 2.7’s max capacity. But no one really tows that much with a half ton. They just jump up to f250. The 2.7 fits very well in the line up. Theres an engine for everyones needs. Ford is genius

    Just bought a 2019 XLT sport with the 5.0. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that the MPG was lacking. I used to have a 2015 with the 5.0 and the MPG was great. Not sure what happened but now I'm nervous with all the issues I'm hearing for the 18+ V8s.

      Absolutely agree! Just want this great truck to perfect mechanically. When we buy let's say $800 TV we expect it to work perfectly or we return it and most likely get the same thing to try again...same thing applies here...spent wayyyy more than 800 and expect perfection or it needs to be fixed/replaced identically.

    I have a tri-fold, aluminum folding cover on the bed which I think helps a bit for the highway. Secondly, try different gas ad I think done cheaper gas has more than 10 percent ethanol which kills mileage. The one trip mileage day was perfect weather with no wind and I did not beat on it at all, not "normal" driving for most of us. I do however see over 20mpg on the dash meter during highway cruising quite often. Sport mode is fun but kills mileage. A friend has the 3.5 Ecoboost in the same truck and does just a bit worse on mileage than me, but it could be driver habit. Enjoy your truck and don't sweat the small stuff.

  • @dennisallen1808
    @dennisallen1808 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Keep an eye on your oil level. I have a 2018 5.0 with all the problems. Engine tick, rattle, and I know it has to be burning oil. Dealer said it won’t do a consumption test until 8k. Beautiful truck, but I honestly think it’s going to be nothing but problems down the road. Had that TSB done a while back. Helped transmission shifts, but rattle is still there on deceleration and it sounds worse now that I have almost 7k. Listen to your transmission as it shifts from one gear to the next. I’m hearing a metallic squeal as it shifts, once in gear it stops until it goes to the next. I hope you don’t have these problems, but I think there is definitely something wrong with the 18’s. Good luck with your truck.

    • @dennisallen1808
      @dennisallen1808 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I’m going to take it back soon for the engine rattle again and see if any new TSB’s came up recently. Hopefully they hear the trans whine too and can address that issue. I’m hoping eventually I can get Ford to buy it back or trade it in. I’m really disappointed in the truck and I just want out of it. Maybe after the oil consumption test when I hit 8000 miles they will finally do something to remedy the issues.

    There are so many factors that effect real world fuel economy that whatever you are getting is probably irrelevant to my situation. Having said that I am glad to see that you are happy overall. I have a 2.7 ecoboost and the overall fuel economy is pretty close to the EPA rating of 20. I track my fuel mileage based on the actual miles travelled and the actual fuel used. Using this method for the last 30k miles I have averaged about 19.5 actual. The computer seems to be a little bit optimistic by showing 20.5 over that same period. Probably 75% of my driving is highway and at 70 mph. I rarely go over 75 mph. No towing and very little hauling. I am pretty sure that EPA ratings assume sock gears (I have optional 3.55s) and no lift (like you have) in the front. Oh an they also assume 100% pure gasoline which is nearly impossible to find. Considering all of those factors I am happy with my 19.5 mpg vs the 15 mpg I was getting in my 09 Ram with the 5.7 HEMI. I would be happy with 18 out of the 5.0 with my particular situation.

  • @ThaMagnaCarta
    @ThaMagnaCarta 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    most cars if you want the best mpg you gotta go ni faster than 65mph.
    I NEVER got the EPA 17mpg for my 2005 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.7...never thought I would considering I have 33s, no bed cover and a giant wing cause it's the daytona edition.
    but on my way back home on a 310 mile stretch, i actually got 17.3 mpg...not bad for a 14 year old truck...ofcourse hills are minimal in south texas and wind was partially in my favor.

    This has got to be the best engine Ford has built in decades. The power and sound is addicting, and the fuel economy is ridiculously good, at least at sea level with the 2WD and 3.31 axle. Best F-150 in the last 20 years easy.
    Also, that hard downshifting thing is probably a software issue. The older 6spd had a similar thing downshifting from 5th-4th at ~30mph, software reflash fixed it right up.

    I have a 2016 Lariat w/ 3.5L Ecoboost. Drive it in Sport Mode exclusively. I average around 14 mpg or so. Out on the highway, I drive it around 75+ mph. I tested the Quarter Mile speed. Made 104 mph in a Quarter Mile just outside my neighborhood. I live on the edge of the city limits. So exit my neighborhood and head west is out in the country. Road has been replaced by a 4-lane highway parallel south of the old road. So it's pretty devoid of traffic (and cops). Lol

    My brother in law came out of state with his F150. Didn't know anything about his new truck. Thought it was a v6 but it was a 5.0 XLT and he said it was pretty fast. Checked it out... seemed decent but pretty quiet for a 5.0 motor with 385+ hp. He said it would take my 2011 Audi Q5 v6 3.2 which has 272hp and way less tq. I thought so also but I absolutely blew the doors off that truck LOL! I never really got on it before or floored it but it took off like hell from a dead stop. We then raced at 35mph and still got him. Those trucks are pretty quick though for what they are.

Took truck in for first service today and asked them to address all the same noises the drive train makes that everyone and their brother have already talked about. I have a feeling the 10 speed tranny is going to get replaced in its life under a recall. The ticking everyone hears at idol Im pretty sure is just the injectors but we will see. Just bought my wife the same truck but in a 6-speed and we absolutely love it it actually did better pulling my trailer then my Ram 2500 Cummins diesel. Now I know if I'm pulling a lot of weight obviously my 2500 is going to be the one but this was not the case pulling the same load going to the cottage with the family the 2500 should have done way better than the 1500 this is why I paid more money for a diesel truck which made me feel stupid because in the end owning a diesel truck cost a lot more money to own so I might be considering buying another Ford and selling my Ram 2500 but I really do still love my Ram 2500 but if it's going to cost me double the money to own the 2500 in any company I don't care if it's a Ford RAM or GMC as long as it's a diesel you're going to be screwed with all kinds of cleaning fees and fluids to try to keep it going properly I didn't think diesel trucks were so sensitive anyways I'm going to have to do some more calculations and see if I really need this diesel truck because down here in Canada diesel is more expensive than gas which wasn't the case when I bought the truck anyways more b******* for the diesel

    • @monsterram6617
      @monsterram6617 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If that gasser pulled better than your Dodge, there's something wrong with your truck. Oh and those "cleaning fees" are bullshit. A.k.a., wallet flushes performed by every dishonest dealer on the planet. Read your Owner's Manual and it will tell you the scheduled maintenance. Notice that it never mentions cleaning the EGR or any other components. My experience is that if you own a diesel and you're not doing the maintenance yourself, you're going to get bent-over by the Stealership. If that's not feasible, then maybe a gas truck is a better fit.
      Fwiw, gas is under $2/gal in some places where I'm at, yet diesel is still over $3/gal. But guess what? No gas truck can do what a diesel truck can do, with the same fuel economy. Strap 8K to the back of that F-150 and load up the family and see how that works out for you: single digit MPGs with a load that is at the limit of the chassis' capability. Put the same load on diesel and you'll be getting 13-14 MPGs and not even know you had anything hitched up.

    • @mariobajac
      @mariobajac 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry man but it is what it is I live in Canada and down here in Canada the diesel is more expensive than gas. And the numbers don't lie and my wallet doesn't lie if it's cheaper for me to drive with the same load which one is doing better it's obvious I thought there was something wrong with the truck as well but everything is running tip top shape I understand if I have a much heavier load the diesel will do better I totally agree but I am not taking these huge heavy loads all the time and the little 1500 can take them now all 1500. And with a lot less maintenance

    • @monsterram6617
      @monsterram6617 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mariobajac Nothing to be sorry about, if that's what works best for you then so be it. My point is that if you're paying for unneeded services, that's going to inflate the actual cost of operation and give you skewed numbers. Things like this are "EGR cleanings", "XXX fluid flushes", etc. They are not needed and are pushed by the service department to generate profits from unwitting customers. It usually sounds something like, "Oh, you're getting close to XXX miles and we recommend the ______ service. Oh, and if you don't get the ____ service, it might void your warranty". These are blatant lies.
      Another common waste of money is having a dealership perform any scheduled maintenance. Dealerships demand an obscene amount of money for basic services that, in reality, cost only a fraction of what they charge to accomplish on your own. For example, around here the dealership charges between $500 - $600 to get an oil change and replace fuel filters (every 15,000 miles or less). Or, I do them myself and pay $88 for fuel filters, $15 for the oil filter, and less than $50 for oil. Another is the CCV filter, which is about $55 yet the dealership can charge upwards of $500 for this.
      I'm curious though, what maintenance does the diesel require that the gasser doesn't? Or are you just talking about fuel costs?

    I have a 2017 XL sport regular cab short bed 4x4 fx4 tow, and snow plow package 5.0l and let me tell ya...
    I havent reset trip one since i got it so it shows the actual mpg since new. iirc its right at 12mpg average. At around 3000 miles on the odo it was at 10.7mpg average.
    That being said i live near one of the worst traffic city's in the country and some days a 5 mile commute takes 40 minutes, so to say I sit idling in traffic alot would be an understatement. Iirc after roughly 6000 miles (420 hours total time) i have over 140 hours of engine idling time. 😐😠
    When i get the chance to get out of the city it will do 20mpg+ easy but thats extremely rare for me.
    I wanted an eco boost but you can't get the 3.5l only the 2.7l in a reg cab short bed, and if you do get that you cannot put a plow on it (and keep your warranty) so that was not an option for me.
    All that said I knew it wouldn't be great on gas, but never expected how bad it actually is. It's still a great truck, just a bit thirsty. Fast, but thirsty.

In other words, only in perfect conditions. I own a '13 3.5L Ecoboost SuperCrew with the 3.73 rear end. And I average 19mpg only when I'm doing 55mph or less, but it is what I expected.

      Keep solid documentation of everything that happens and what the dealer does about it, just in case you have to lemon-law it. That being said, I'm sorry you're not happy with your truck. Mines a 2013 I bought used with 85k miles and I've been happy as can be. The few times it was at the dealer getting purchase agreement work done, they gave me 2018 and 2019 loaners that I had for a few days each. don't get me wrong, I loved the truck for the full 24 house I had it. I also loved my 2011 which was flawless but I just hit 31 days and the dealership called me on Monday to tell me it still smells of mold on the inside and they didn't know what else to do about it besides ordering all new seats and a headliner but that still won't fix the engine rattle. Yesterday Ford Corporate called and wanted to know if I would pursue a buyback which I did. Now I have to wait 5 days to hear back. I have my original repair order and am prepared to go to a lemon law attorney if they deny the buyback. 31 days in the shop after owning a brand new truck for just 2 days is nuts. @kieranwilliams3052 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Peirce ... it’s not bombing. It’s a software calibration bug that only was seen when the 10speed was mated to the 5.0L. Both F150 and Mustangs built in a short period Jan - May 2018 have this potential issue. The 10 speed has been in use other wise for several years. The 5.0L develops power differently than other applications and this issue is just a confort item not performance or breakage. In fact this same trans is use by GM in the ZL1 Camero and soon there 1500 series pickups.

I believe the ten speed helps with fuel mileage. While on highway, if I cruise at sixty average, 65 going downhill, 55 at the top... mileage can be great. But people hate following me. I went on a 120 mile round trip using that method, my average fuel economy was 29.7 mpg. That is on a 4x4 with 3.55 gears. No shifting problems yet, but if it does come around, I hear a flash will cure it.

    Anyone who uses the dummy gauge to register their mpg doesn't have a clue about actual truck mpg. Who in hell runs a 5.0 with 87 octane? Why didn't you just buy the 2.7 if you are that worried about mpg? You want to know the real issue with the 2018 F150 5.0 w/ 10 speed? It is running a consistent 45mph and the transmission wants to hangout in 9th or 10th gear. If I'm cruising around town in 35-45mph range then I just downshift with a max 8th gear and it runs perfectly.
