Maybe you can help. I have a 2000 ford ranger and my anti theft system is stoping my vehicle from starting I tried getting a new key cut and programmed but it didn't work. I bought a new pcm and still no luck. My obd 2 scanner won't read my truck. All my tuck does is crank. My fuel pump doesn't power on but my fuel pump is good.
Question: Would you recommend to just replace the entire engine on a 2005 5.4 3v with nearly 250,000 miles? My oil pump crapped out, and I fear the heads will require replacement. Wondering about the condition of the cylinder bores and the rotating assembly. Thanks for any help!
Mine still makes the noise after the dealer claims to have updated the pcm. They agree i have a noise which is not normal and are replacing cam phasers.
I took my truck to the dealer for this sound and they claimed they couldnt replicate it. Now i can tell them to shove it. Thanks so much for your wisdom.

I noticed the same problem a week ago with the rattling. Do you also have a whining noise when accelerating. 2018 F150 V8 XLT 4X4 with 1500. I bought mine Dec 22, 2018 I should have just kept my 2017 f150 supercab with no damn problems.
I purchased 2018 F150 V8 Lariat on the same day, Dec 22, 2018. They finished reprogramming PCM yesterday. But this noise still comes out. The noise makes me annoy, you know.

Huge thank you for the info on this! Initially my dealer had no clue what my complaint was until I showed them this TSB. I will say, the TSB does NOT fully fix the noise but it does make it a little more quiet. Still need to take it back in for the rear end clunk though.
turbohcar what is the rear end clunk you are hearing? I hear a clunk type sound when accelerating from a stop here and there, but it’s difficult to reproduce.

Had the tsb to fix cold start rattle on 2018 3.5 (cam phasers - successful fix). This rattle after acceleration started not long after. Haven’t been able to get ford to validate an issue thus far. Thanks for all the info!
I had this TSB done today. The engine sounds much quieter and the transmission shifts much smoother. Tomorrow morning will be the real test. It will be 33-34 degrees outside when I leave for work. The sound is much more pronounced when cold. I’m crossing my fingers in hopes that this will all be corrected and I can finally enjoy driving my truck. I will update as soon as I can.
So, I woke up this morning it was 34 degrees in Chicago. I was hopeful that this engine ratcheting noise would be gone after this TSB, but Ford has let me down again. The engine noise is exactly the same as the day I took it in. I have noticed better transmission shifts, but the noise is a real disappointment. Hopefully they dig deeper into this issue soon.
Yes, the ratcheting noise is still there. Did not change one bit. A real disappointment. The transmission shifts a bit better though. My engine still sounds like crap. I’m beginning to regret my purchase.
Dennis Allen my sound goes away after driving for awhile. One day I turned off the radio and noticed I have spark knock / engine knock when accelerating I have switched to premium gas and it has helped but that is 40 cent a gallon increase.
You’re a awesome guy, saying you’d do this for free. I know for a fact most of the dealers where I live would either try to charge in some way or another or try to do something sneaky with the experiences we’ve had. Luckily I have a 1996 F-150 with the 5.0 so I’m not having this issue 😂
Fixing cars with lines of code....welcome to the mechanic on 2018! Nothing more I enjoy then not getting dirty and pushing buttons on a laptop to fix an issue. Another informative video Brian!
@Two two three Five five sixI have been doing software updates since 1998 but lately its getting to be more and more of it. Especially when it comes to the radios.....we do updates on those all day long for different concerns. Cool thing is you can work twice as fast when it comes to updates....multiple cars at one time.
@@muskokamike127 Very true...in some cases a cheap software update fixes them and in others time to get approval for a loan, especially on anything diesel.
Well at 4900 miles my truck started doing it. Had the dealership update the PCM and when I started it this morning and drove it down the road it still does it.
On your behalf it is a great gesture to offer to fix the TSB 18-2354 at your service facility for free. However, in today's world be careful as any issues that may arise after your repair could come back to haunt you. Unless Ford would back you in such a case. I've been there being the nice guy and getting stung in the end.
Agreed but reflashing a Ford PCM is pretty foolproof nowadays when using the Ford IDS. If it is their calibration Ford wrote it so it would be on them to fix the lines of codes as the IDS check the calibration and if it was applied properly before it ever lets you out of programming mode.
@@FordTechMakuloco I would not get involved in that let the dealer take care of that dont waste your time with it...I hope you getting paid by Ford for the Warranty Claim! If not screw that shit..
I have been a auto tech for 20 plus years now and when it comes to big issues or problem hands down it usally ford I am working on and I work on all kinds all the way up to semi trucks.
Should the PCM update/flash they do for Oil Consumption also fix this issue? It has not in my 2018 F150 5.0, nor has the oil consumption stopped (regardless of what the dealer says).
FYI-I had this TSB performed and it fixes the problem, but it takes time for truck to “re-learn”. This is not an instant fix, but each day the noise gets better
R L hmm...I had my truck reflashed with the tsb last December twice, had 3k on the truck. Now has 6k and still makes the noise. I'd take it back to the dealer cause Ford says the ratchet click is a normal characteristic.
R L I changed my own oil last week . 5w20 full syn penzoil ultra platinum w/motor craft oil filter. Chain slap noise is not as loud and goes away way faster. I also put added almost half qt more oil. It's near the 2nd dot on the dipstick. Mpg has went up as well.
I have to say your viewers are some of the best on TH-cam. Most truck discussions degenerate into.....” My __________has over 3,000,000 miles on it, uphill both ways through 3 feet of snow and is 30 years old. All I’ve ever done is change the oil once and a light bulb” pissing contest, Good helpful discussions here. I just traded in my 54 f150 that was running great but I became aware of the cam phasing issues. Now that I’m looking for my next truck I’m sorry to see that they’re all having issues as they get newer and more complicated.😡 BTW How’s the Dodge Ecodiesel holding up?
Mahalo for sharing. This rattle has been bugging me since I noticed it the day after buying my truck. Just found time to have the recall to the seatbelt tensioners done and had them look into the rattle. Did what you suggested and they agreed. Took a longer way home and feel that the truck shifts better and there's no rattle...for now.
Can you please do a video on the 2018 2019 5.0 tick? The one Ford says is normal but we all know it's not. All the bores being scoped with scuff marks etc, NOT normal!!! You don't work for Ford anymore so you can give it to us like a big boy, Ford cant fire you for giving your opinion. Please, please, please, with whip cream and a cherry on top!
This is his response to the noise. I found it on another one of his posts, but I can't find the source video tabarnak! FordTechMakuloco 1 year ago The new 2018 models also now have direct injection so yes you will now have a new constant noise compared to earlier models from the direct injection system similar to the ecoboost models but all the noise mainly originates from the cam driven high pressure pump. The noise shown in this video is not from the high pressure pump.
@@Prolab521 That's how my sounds runs greats but there's times it sounds like knocking sounds like the early car did when needed oil took it to the dealer they said the have to hear it in order know what to fix any help here
That sounds terrible, i have a 14 and if i blip the throttle a bit when its a little cold it will rattle or you can hear the coyote knock a little bit more
Happening on my 2019 too. Same fix I’m guessing? I’ll try to take the paper in, they want to keep overnight so they can start cold. Thanks for the great content!
I get this. Also get a popping / chain tightening/ clicking type sound on acceleration. Runs great but I’ll probably go back to Chevy for my next one. The sounds are extremely off putting alone 😅
I know this is a older post but I have couple question for you if you don't mind answering them. Even after the "fix" if the problem is still there could this problem cause damage or catastrophic engine failure? and have you tore apart a engine with this problem and if so did you noticed anything out of the ordinary that we should be concern about? Thanks Mike
I noticed today that it was a warmer 62 degrees when i started the truck that the rattle was a lot more quiet. Like if you werent listening for it you wouldn't have noticed. Bought my truck in July. May have been doing it the whole time and didn't notice till colder temperatures.
I just purchased a 2019 F150 used with about 60k miles little over a month ago, it has the 5.0 which is what I wanted, or at least thought I wanted because I had already been soured by my previous 1st gen Ecoboost, wanted to go to something more tired and true. Turns out that may have been a mistake because I know notice that rattle, and I have it on both acceleration between 1500-2000RPM and deceleration from about 1200-800RPM, the acceleration sound is definitely the worse of the 2 sounds and lasts longer. Wish I would have discovered this problem before purchasing because it still doesn't sound like there is a good fix for this. I've seen stories about just doing just a re-programming to the extreme of complete engine replacements, and even just replacing the VCT solenoids themselves and none of these seem to be fixes but more of just temporary improvements, but noise comes back. I haven't done a deep dive into mine yet, just trying to do all of my research first so I can come at it with a methodical approach to determine the best solution to fix it, or is it best to drop this thing before I sink a bunch of time and money into it, since I just bought it. Being that this video is 4 years old, has there been any other developments in this issue and any new discoveries as to what can be done to fix it?
*UPDATE* took my 2018 F-150 3.5L Ecoboost in on 1/4/19 for various abnormal transmission issues, including this rattle after acceleration. After a PCM and TCM update, the noise has been reduced roughly 75% in terms of loudness and seems to goes away much faster. Updates are: PCM = JLA3A-12A650-AUJ, TCM= JL3A-12B565-AHD. Transmission is much smoother, more responsive, and this rattle isn't gone, but it's MUCH better than before. Still not acceptable for a $55-60k truck with 12,500 miles on it..
Taking my 2018 F150 5.0l in the 15th had to reschedule. Probably will do the computer update. The chain isnt rattling. Two different chain designs between the 3.5 and the 5.0 and making the exact same noise. Its either the VCT solenoid hammering or the exhaust phaser itself making the noise. Put your hand on the exhaust Vct solenoid when it makes the noise. Feels like a jack hammer. The solenoid is the loudest spot listening with a stethoscope. Its happening on both sides.
Have you any idea how many Ford engineers watch you're videos...you make them look ....uh ....bad....suprised Ford hasn't called for you to come work for them..Cheers🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸
So does the ticking noise on the 5.0 mustang carry over to the 5.0 on the F-150? I had a 2013 f-150 and never had a problem with it, I love the coyote engine!!!
The "bbq tick" is piston slap. There are other places that emit noise just because of the complexity of the engine, but the serious problem in the bottom end is piston slap. Go to GothamEMS channel and see the detailed history he has compiled. Boosted Addictions latest video shares the carnage after his twin turbo Coyote blew because of a fuel system failure
how is the f150 the #1 truck, With so many issues? ecobooat rattle, ticking, slap, an so on? So many issues, the dealer deems as"Normal" but its wrong!

Thank you. I have a 2019 and made this noise. Truck has 35000 miles on it but is new to me. Too it to the dealer and he did the TSB you suggested and noise is gone.
So, this rattling / ratcheting sound issue has been going on for awhile now, almost a year. I originally had Tsb 18-2354 performed which helped the shift points of the transmission and it performed better, but it’s still not the smoothest transmission. The rattling / ratcheting sound on deceleration and sometimes acceleration, especially on cold start or cold weather still occurs. So, I am stuck like most of you with Ford techs not having a real answer. If you read Grant Chamber’s comment about a tsb that he came across that was left in his vehicle, tsb 19-2093 it made a lot of sense. So, I Went to my local dealer today 17AUG19 and found that tsb 19-2093 has been superseded by tsb 19-2230 that was issued 19JUL19. I have another appointment at the dealer Monday 20AUG19. They need to replicate the sound / problem and then tsb 19-2230 will be performed. Everyone who has been dealing with issue knows that replicating this sound after the transmission is warm will be more difficult as the rattling / ratcheting sound is not as pronounced. Fingers crossed. I will update the results as soon as I can.
The technician doesn’t believe this is the problem. He believes it is the valve body, and that is going to be replaced tomorrow. I honestly don’t think it will remedy the problem, but you never know. So, maybe after tomorrow if nothing changes they will complete above Tsb. This will be the second official time a dealership has tried to correct the issue. If it doesn’t work I’m going to call Ford and start my complaint. I honestly think there are multiple engine and transmission design issues that will only get worse as time goes on. This is the worst new vehicle I ever purchased.
They didn’t have an answer or new TSB as of July 2020. Same old bullshit with the dealership and service managers. The engine must have design flaws that Ford won’t fess up to and the 10 speed is garbage. GM is already dumping that co-engineered transmission and going back to their 8 speed. That being said I am the proud new owner of a 2020 Toyota Tundra. It’s like night and day. No problems, no issues, no headaches. I will never ever purchase a new Ford product. I hope you get an answer one day and your truck runs right. Good Luck.
@@LittlemissMadelyn haha have fun with that 13mpg. I can tell you don't know what youre talking about. The 8 speed is a disaster gm has multiple class actions suits on it and they are moving to the 10 speed in all their products.
Hi Brian great info and just in time. After all the problems with the 3v triton you would think Ford would have figured it out by now! Been debating on coyote swap for my 99 mustang, maybe I'll have to re-think that plan.
Great info. Love your channel. Curious if this update will fix the intermittent stalling issue on decel. I have a 2016 F150, 5.0l. Not setting any codes but will stall intermittently at stops.
Hey thanks for all your help. I was wondering if you have heard of a rattling in front end area of a 2012 F150 SVT. Usually only does it under still acceleration up slight hill or flat in high gear?
I wish we were in the same state so you can study my car issue, seven "mechanics" can't find anything because there is no codes, no history codes, etc. Car in the summer is very sluggish and has no power at all, it seems stuck in first gear and you can floor it and car will take a long time to take off and forget about doing burn outs! BUT in the winter is quiet the opposite!! I replaced the tranny, cleaned AIC, full tune up, cleaned throttle body, new TPS, and lots of brand new parts but I stopped buying parts long ago. It really sucks that no one can perform a real diagnosis.
I'm using 5w-30 Amsoil Signature instead of 5w-20. Also heard that using midgrade fuel or 93 helps with the 10:1 compression ratio in these 5.0 2018 F-150s.
Awesome! I have this noise on my 2018 and I was wondering what it was! Thanks! Now if they can come up with a fix for the transmission noises and cold 3-4/3-5 skip shift hesitation that I'm having all will be good. Shifts like a dream when warm though.
2018 5.0 almost 35k after updates shifts great and rattling has lessened but knocks like a SOB during idle and acceleration. 🙃 love the engine but damn shes noisy.
Hi Brian. First you're a godsend for putting up this info like you do. I have a question if you get a moment. Myself and quite a few on the F-150 forum that have 2018's with the 5.0 have another different noise. When we accelerate somewhat faster than normal, as soon as you let off the gas, at any speed we get a POP, which sounds like it's down around the exhaust manifold area. It doesn't matter if the engine is warm or cold, or at what speed you let off the gas, it'll happen and in any gear.. The best example would be accelerating from a stop to 30mph and taking your foot immediately off the pedal.. you can hear a pop. If you get on the gas again to accelerate to 40 or 50mph and let off, it pop's. Then you can manipulate it by 'goosing' it... Accelerate & lift off..pop, Accelerate, lift off.. pop. I should mention, that if I baby it and lift off the gas gently it won't make the noise. Also Brian, it won't pop by just revving the engine. It has to be moving. It doesn't have a hard hitting noise like a motor mount would exhibit, but anything is possible. Any advice at all would be incredibly appreciative. It really clouds an otherwise great engine. I should mention that I don't have the noise that this particular TSB video is about. I did have the transmission TSB 18-2274 taken care of a few weeks ago. The transmission is fantastic now, but that noise stayed the same. It's tough to pinpoint this issue. I tried using a go-pro with no luck. Thank you in advance Brian! John M.
Others have this problem as well, search the forums at f150forum.com. No fix as far as I know. I have heard it twice in 9 months on my truck, but am lighter on the pedal.
Do you think these trucks are better than a 2010 F150 5.4? I have this truck with 4x4 and 3:55 gears. I am finally about to hit 100,000 miles which have been trouble free minus an exhaust manifold leak which lead to broken bolts and an expensive repair when I first bought it. Other than that it has been good. I do have a tick at idle but it's not too bad and it's been there for forever. I always change the oil every 3000-3500 miles. Getting ready to have my mechanic drop the transmission pan and change the spark plugs and I should be good for another long while I hope after I change to 5w30 for my next oil change (I've already changed the front and rear dif fluid and T case fluid). Anyway, should I keep this truck or upgrade to one of these newer trucks? The only thing I see I would be getting is a little better MPG little more power and maybe a little better ride quality.
I did this update like 2 different times and it fixed the sound both times... now I took it in 2 days ago for the same issue was told there is no fix now.. and they told me it's thr cam fazers and the sound will never go away.
I have had oil consumption problems, and rattling noises. I went to the dealer and they performed this tsb, it's actually louder now, and still burning just as much oil. The truck only has 2,300 miles on it. It has consistently consumed a little less than 1 quart every 500 miles. At 300 miles into the oil consumption test, the oil is already down on the dipstick. Just thought you would like to know 👍🏻
My 2020 has burned oil since day one. It tells me on the OCI monitor to change about 7000 miles or so each time and in that period it will use about 2 quarts of oil.
@natevanlandingham1945 my transmission started acting up, and luckily I traded it in for something else. I won't ever buy a late model Ford again. I was so disappointed in that truck.
@@joshuasrulez yea I get to drive newer models at my job. I get a new truck every 3-4 years. They trade when they have 65k on them. This 2020 f150 has 75k on it right now and by the time trade in time rolls around it will be at 95k. It has taught me I probably don't want anything ford has right now. The 10 speed trans this one has is funky too it sometimes bangs into gear when cold . I had a Ram before this one and it has worse issues and repairs in the 4 years I had it. I will say the seats were more comfortable though.
@natevanlandingham1945 The funny thing is that 10 speed was a Ford-GM joint venture. I just started working at a GMC dealership, and the GM version is apparently way less problematic. My F150 would clunk, bang, miss shifts, downshift 4 gears randomly, and really just performed terribly. From my research, the valve bodies were a big problem. Before I traded mine in, I called and told the service department my issues, and they told me they could take it apart, but at that time, valve bodies were on backorder. I proceeded to drive it like I stole it until I got out of it. It was getting BAD.
There a lot of people with 5.0 that are having oil consumption. Do you know more about it? It would be great could address this problem. Even if there not fix for it yet. Thanks you video. They help a lot
I have a 2018 f150 5.0. Making the rattle on decel from about 800-1300 rpm. I’ve replaced the Vct solenoids and it didn’t work. Could it be the cam phaser itself? I’ve heard from many that this reflash does not work for long if at all
I had this tsb for the rattle and the oil consumption reprogram. The rattle is better, the oil consumption is to early to tell. I have noticed a humming or wining sound however after this work was completed. Any thoughts. This is a 2018 f150 V-8 with 30,000 miles. Thanks for any input.

I just picked up an 07 F150 with a remanufactured 5.4 good thing you're close to me if I ever have any major problems. I grew up in Plano,IL.

Thank you so much for covering this! My 2018 is doing this very same thing!
William S you are right. I thought the TSB fixed the problem, but the noise is still there. Almost sounds like timing chain slap.
All I’ve ever done is change the oil once and a light bulb” pissing contest,
Good helpful discussions here. I just traded in my 54 f150 that was running great but I became aware of the cam phasing issues.
Now that I’m looking for my next truck I’m sorry to see that they’re all having issues as they get newer and more complicated.😡
BTW How’s the Dodge Ecodiesel holding up?
Thank you Brian. Good job. I appreciate your videos. Have a good day.

Mahalo for sharing. This rattle has been bugging me since I noticed it the day after buying my truck. Just found time to have the recall to the seatbelt tensioners done and had them look into the rattle. Did what you suggested and they agreed. The new 2018 models also now have direct
injection so yes you will now have a new
constant noise compared to earlier models
from the direct injection system similar
to the ecoboost models but all the noise
mainly originates from the cam driven high
pressure pump. The noise shown in this

Happening on my 2019 too. Same fix I’m guessing? I’ll try to take the paper in, they want to keep overnight so they can start cold. Thanks for the great content!
My 2019 makes same noise
I get this. Also get a popping / chain tightening/ clicking type sound on acceleration. Runs great but I’ll probably go back to Chevy for my next one. The sounds are extremely off putting alone 😅
Hello. I took this sheet of paper to my dealership and they had absolutely no idea what it even was. But my truck definitely makes this noise
I know this is a older post but I have couple question for you if you don't mind answering them. Even after the "fix" if the problem is still there could this problem cause damage or catastrophic engine failure? and have you tore apart a engine with this problem and if so did you noticed anything out of the ordinary that we should be concern about?
Thanks
Mike
I noticed today that it was a warmer 62 degrees when i started the truck that the rattle was a lot more quiet. Like if you werent listening for it you wouldn't have noticed. Bought my truck in July. May have been doing it the whole time and didn't notice till colder temperatures.
Im.from plano ill.....
Move to Kentucky 17 year ago.....&i heve the problem in my track.....still working with the Diller
How about the engine tick in the 2018 mustang GT? Can you do a video on it??
Have you any idea how many Ford engineers watch you're videos...you make them look ....uh ....bad....suprised Ford hasn't called for you to come work for them..Cheers🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸
I had no idea this was engine related. My truck only does it when it shifts so i figured it was trans related. Thanks for the info!
It's the 10 speed transmission mine does the same got me an tune from OZ tuning now it works great
So does the ticking noise on the 5.0 mustang carry over to the 5.0 on the F-150? I had a 2013 f-150 and never had a problem with it, I love the coyote engine!!!
Depends on the cam phasing table they have loaded into the PCM
The "bbq tick" is piston slap. There are other places that emit noise just because of the complexity of the engine, but the serious problem in the bottom end is piston slap. Thank you. I have a 2019 and made this noise. Truck has 35000 miles on it but is new to me. Too it to the dealer and he did the TSB you suggested and noise is gone.
Is it still gone?
Have you heard of the 2018-21 coyote engine tick on mustangs or do you have a solution?
Any update?
The technician doesn’t believe this is the problem. He believes it is the valve body, and that is going to be replaced tomorrow. I honestly don’t think it will remedy the problem, but you never know. So, maybe after tomorrow if nothing changes they will complete above Tsb. This will be the second official time a dealership has tried to correct the issue. If it doesn’t work I’m going to call Ford and start my complaint. I honestly think there are multiple engine and transmission design issues that will only get worse as time goes on. This is the worst new vehicle I ever purchased.
@@LittlemissMadelyn Any update?

So is this only for a 2018 I have a 2019 I'd appreciate an answer thank you
Does this effect the 2017 5.0 ? My truck has strange noise when Cold / warming up. Not sure if it's the same issue.
What about the whistle from the 5.0 in 18/19 years when accelerating? Very annoying sound

Is that rattle fix, also included as part of the newer 'oil consumption' PCM reprogram that is out there?
I'm using 5w-30 Amsoil Signature instead of 5w-20. Also heard that using midgrade fuel or 93 helps with the 10:1 compression ratio in these 5.0 2018 F-150s.
GEN 3 18+ is 12.0:1 11-17 F150 coyotes 10.5:1 11-17 mustang coyotes 11.0:1
Any thoughts on a higher mileage 5.0 that pings on very light acceleration running 91 octane AND has brand new Ford spark plugs??
Heard about Ford's new big block pushrod engine?
Yup very cool!
@@brianwallace6700 Thanks Brian. Yeah, I've been on the Forum for seven year's.

Thanks for getting back to me!
Did they fix this with the 1st gen coyotes? Mine does it, it’s an 2012
Do you think these trucks are better than a 2010 F150 5.4?
I believe the 2009-2014 models were the best years.
@@joshuasrulez yea I know it was joint GM/Ford transmission.

I have a 2018 f150 5.0. Making the rattle on decel from about 800-1300 rpm. I’ve replaced the Vct solenoids and it didn’t work. Could it be the cam phaser itself? I’ve heard from many that this reflash does not work for long if at all
Hey how’s the Ecodiesel running? Haven’t seen much mopar Ecodiesel videos of recent. Like changing gear oils etc..
