I bought a super clean heavily modified 95 MK3 VR6 that was traded at a family members car dealership. Car came with a build sheet! I was able to buy it right from the trade in lot. It had a full body kit, coil overs, slotted rotors, headers and a complete exhaust system. Complete customer sound system. Best of all was the engine and transmission. Speed governor removed, rev limiter removed, Intake, Cams, lightweight pistons, 6 speed transmission conversion with limited slip differential. This car had a-lot of upgrades and from what I can tell, everything looked professionally done. I previously owned another VR6 and this one was on another level. I kept updating and adding a few things here and there. I owned it for about 10 years and eventually sold it. Best modified car I ever owned!

One thing to factor in. Owning the car outright vs. payments. Skipping financing losses, immediate depreciation, need for full insurance, etc. Leaves what a monthly payment would be available for modification, fun, and enjoyment.
I really appreciate the honesty in the video though! Fitment industries could be considered to be shooting themselves in the foot for this type content, however it is the undeniable truth.

In the past; early 2000s aftermarket companies were "new" to the automotive market. No internet, reliability was a big concern. Now days people like Dinan, ABT, AMS Performance, Rentech offer reliability through thousands of hours in R&D. Automotive car brands are partnering with aftermarket companies to offer more horsepower to their customers. Really comes down to where you're buying the aftermarket item from.

  • @asmith5703

Yes, I agree individually, never sold a car before, would like after market wheels, compared to the price of the OEM wheels brand new, makes the decision a bit hard.

  • @mylesswann530
    @mylesswann530 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it depends which direction your going in when modifying your vehicle, go fast parts versus longevity/ improved designs. I have an 03 HO 5.9 cummins with a 6 speed manual, nearly stock when I got it besides a trailer brake and CAI, I added a Fass lift pump with 2 mircon filters, a 52 gallon S&B fuel tank, a 2 Micron Amsoil bypass filter, BBI stage .1 injectors, and a rebuilt OEM turbo and manifold with ceramic coating on the hot side. These are all supporting if not improved designs for a stock truck, the only exterior mods are stickers and they're removeable. It'd be hard to argue against these mods at decreasing the value versus a juiced up 2500 with injectors, turbo, 22x14s on a 6" lift.
Build it like you don't want it to brake has been my motivation for cleaning up after the previous owners.

honestly depends on the rarity, looks and performance upgrade involved in the mod. If your going for OEM plus look then most times value increases vs ricing the shit out of it. HP increase usually adds value as long as reliability has been unchanged. Also exclusivity is a big factor, discontinued models are going for a hefty price right now as long as they are in good condition.

This was a great video for me since I recently sold a Cadillac ELR which was in beautiful condition and all stock since I moved into a condo where there was no place to plug it in. I had originally traded a Nissan 370Z for the Caddy which was also in great condition and mostly stock and since I loved the 370Z so much decided to buy another one after selling the Caddy. The new Z was a few years newer than the previous one, but was highly modified with an Amuse full body kit, very expensive forged wheels, and Air Lift suspension to name a few. The Z I bought was the lowest priced of any I had seen and had most of the modifications I liked, and I made $7k dollars between selling the Caddy and buying the Z, but now I am finding it will cost me that $7k to get the Z up to my standards.

I put bbs rs wheels on my car and as for the parts I changed I put rare oem parts on it. Stuff that is very hard to find and now days when you do it’s gonna cost lotta money for what it is. Like 1500 for the fiberglass hood or 800 or the euro spec tail lights, and bunch of interior bits. I have my unicorn and it’s the oem chmsl in clear with red led’s aka “3rd” brake light. I think these parts added to the value of the car for enthusiasts of that make and model car.

Oh c'mon, let the kids have their fun. I did it too in my fast n furious days (I had Jesse's Jetta 😂) But as you get older, you realize the best way to get performance, is to buy from a company with in-house performance division (like M, AMG, Abarth, N, TRD, Nismo, RS, F ...etc). I daily an e46 M3 and it'll never know what aftermarket is; maybe perhaps lighter weight rims for less rotational mass, but that's it.

yea there is definetly some mods that add to the value of the car, mostly economy mods for reliability in older cars, maybe a popular brand exhaust many people would buy extra, a good set of wheels also, not 100% but its gonna add a bit to the resale* .
for example i bought my 86 early this year for 18k bone stock but with 2 sets of wheels, now similar examples go for 20k now, value addition of 2 sets of wheels, exhaust and thats it...similar model with better suspension setup? 21k €.

Over the last 25 years, you would be amazed at how many hoods of hot rods, I've opened, and found a radiator support bent. Or an upper apron that's been beat the s*** out of. Because most of the time... You can't afford to upgrade it... Until the insurance company gives you a check for all the upgrades you need. What better time than to build a hot rod, then after its front end has been wiped out? I mean seriously... you have no idea how many cars are floating around out there, with just a bumper cover, and nothing behind it. No reinforcements no absorbers. No vibration dampeners. Plugs for fog lamps... Fog lamps are missing. Airbag lights on in the dash. Barometric air pressure sensors that.. Just dangling. usually an inch from the whole they're supposed to be mounted in. No horns. Steering tracking all over the road. Just a little tip for all of your future hot rodders out there... Yes... The steering knuckle can get bent to. Especially in these cheap pieces of crap. And if you're thinking about purchasing a Hotrod, because it's a great deal on Craigslist. Take my advice... When you open the hood... And it doesn't look right... It's Because it's not. Radiators are never mounted with zip ties from the factory. There is no Factory duct tape on the assembly floor!
News flash... If I'm going to build a custom car, I'm tearing out all the crap you did... And doing it the right way. in which case... I am never going to give you the asking price for that car. Cuz I don't want your aftermarket add-ons. I want the basic platform. I don't need your house... I need the foundation. That's it... I'm scrapping everything you did. I don't care if it's Wheels engine... Untrustworthy. Mainly because... I don't know what bolts you forgot to tighten. I mean... How are you supposed to know that engine mounts bolt to the crossmember, not weld in. wire feed welders do not penetrate 3/8 plate steel! ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE BEEN PAINTED FIRST! Test your welds before assuming they are good! And those miserable excuses for adapter plates... Got to go.
If I see a single Scotch lock under the hood... I'm walking away.
if you paid 20 grand for a Mitsubishi Evo... you need serious help. But don't worry... That car is going to give you all the reality check you're ever going to need. At the dealership we call them boats. Which means... Break out another thousand. and heaven forbid, you ever go off the road with it. Make sure, you don't hit anything larger than 3 inches in diameter. Your mama wants to have an open casket funeral.
K&N is awesome... To understand how they thoroughly work... Go ahead and stick your head under water... Take a deep breath. you'd be better off, buying a regular filter... And spray painting it red.
just remember... At the very end of this video... he testified to losing money, every time. That's like taking Financial advice, from a broke person. nothing builds cars better than cash. Putting aftermarket parts on your car, after purchasing them off the internet, on a credit card... Is an actual form of economic oppression. you are not demonstrating Your engineering abilities. You are demonstrating your ability to overpay for things. and 90% of these aftermarket parts, are all smoke and mirrors. They don't actually do anything. But they sure look cool. you need spark Fuel and compression... Everything else is bullshit!

Yes aftermarket parts usually don’t last as long at stock components. Making the car inherently less reliable. Sad but true, which is why it’s hard to sell modded cars. And unless you run into a savvy purchaser, it’s likely that your higher asking price will be likely to be denied by most.

Mods that permanently alter the car are gonna be the worst for any resale value, especially something like butchering the stock fenders for widebody/overfenders. If you do something like that, you might as well plan on keeping it until it dies. Also, you better love the overfender look, because there's no easy or cheap way to fix butchered fenders.
If you tune your car, do yourself a favor and invest in an extra ECM. Put the tune on that, and save the original for visits to the stealership, or if you end up selling.

I try to replace the crap that breaks on my 89 240sx coupe with better but liveable parts.
Engine crapped out in 2003, and was replaced with a sr20det. Wheel bearings and brakes started going at about 250k miles, those were upgraded to 5 lugs and z32 brakes. Will I ever re-coup all i've put into it, maybe. But just enjoy driving it and do my research before making the car undriveable.

Do not use K&N filters. Studies have shown they will lose the beneficial air flow and start to clog after about 500-1000 miles. A stock air filter will have less air flow initially but better air flow over time. So unless you like oiling your filter every 500 miles, I wouldn't bother with K&N. Go with an aftermarket filter that does not require oiling or just keep it stock.
