  • So we may or may not have done a video similar to this in the past, however, coilovers can get a little confusing when you start to get into them. Today Alex goes over different types of coilovers and how they can make a difference when installed on your car.

    Super helpful and educational video. I’ve got a 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG that I’m thinking of putting coil overs on, as well as a wide body conversion. I’m a novice when it comes to actually modifying and upgrading a car, up until now I’ve only done repairs and basic maintenance. Definitely feel more confident putting mods on my car after seeing you guys saying to do it and seeing how knowledgeable you are about how the parts actually work and affect the car as a whole. Keep up the good work guys!

    Considering we're in the rust belt Alex, I think you should have touched on the importance of pre-installation lubrication of threads on the strut body. I believe we get coilovers to be able to adjust our suspension more than once, before you use it, take them apart and lube the threads with some anti-seize. Then thank yourself 3 weeks later when your springs settle and you need to raise up a bit.

    My understanding of twin vs. mono tube contradicts with what's said in this video. Mono-tube coilovers seem to be the more costly option from most companies. KWV3 seems to be the odd exception because it needs the twin-tube to allow the feature that separately adjust the bound/rebound valving.

    You should make a video of coilover springs for pick up trucks, or coilovers that will work with small pick-ups like s10's, rangers, or just about any, if at all possible, but these videos are great, and so much knowledge prior to purchasing a coilover or airbag suspension

    Actually, when paired with a good damper, standard OD coilover sleeves have a lot of performance benefits and is far better than cheap coilovers because the damping characteristics are better and spring rates can be tuned. Also, having an adjustable coilover body generally shows cheap construction and a lack of development because it allows the company to build a standard size without worrying about stroke length. Basically all coilovers designed for real motorsports are made with the correct stroke in mind, so they do not require the body to be adjusted.

    • @way2dumb
      @way2dumb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      from what i have seen, even the cheapest coils will keep the complete travel and just adjust the spring seating position up and down the tube lowering and raising you car with out changing the travel of you suspension. and you can even get a custom shaft length when you order, even with cheapo XYZ's

    I'm currently in the process of modifying my car, but it's so much $$$ I have to take some part of my paycheck every month and do some, there's no way I can do them all together. So, I divided my mods into 'stages', like roush or something, I thought it would sound cool, like "My car is in Stage 2 bro!"
    Till now there were no reason to do an actual suspension mod, because, let's be frank, I was just ricing with halos and switchback LEDs and stuff.
    But now I started my forced induction, it's become necessary to overhaul the intake, gear and the exhaust system, also aerodynamics but most importantly wheels, suspensions and breaks. Coilovers with bigger better breaks, tires and other suspension mods will make your ride more responsive, cut out body roll, improve break bias, lowering. Basically, you can stay flat in the corners. And yeah need some good old bucket seats too.

    hey guys ,love the videos. keep them coming. quick question? what would you recommend for my bmw e93 335i msport 2011 for coilovers? I have been looking at the kw variant 2 or 3. It would be used for more street than track but am looking for performance, lowering( but not to the floor) and comfort. I am in two minds but need help asap. im from London uk . thanks andy

      Hey Andy, KW is a great option otherwise I would suggest possibly BC racing coilovers!

    I’m driving a 2013 Bmw 335is and am looking at upgrading to coilovers sometime in the near future. H&R has a set that state they are 30-40% lighter in weight than others. I like the idea of less weight. Should this concern me, does it make it worthwhile? Can I get your advice on this?

    I use spring clamps. Keeps the ride pretty soft, adjustable for seasons and rim changes, inexpensive and completely safe. Fight me on it.

    • @way2dumb
      @way2dumb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the springs are not designed t be clamped so you are not getting the progression you'll get with a propper lowered spring... one would think. also with coil overs you can retain the complete travel of you suspension.

    Should i get coilovers for my b8 audi s4? What type should I get? Should I save up to bag due to speed bumps and road conditions? Or should I get lowering springs due to the Electronic Dampening System?

    I am looking to build my first car. I have built trucks with lifts and engine performance mods. So I bought myself a 2016 Dart and I am looking to build a super sleeper. I get the engine stuff. That's easy. It's going to get forged pistons and rods, stud kit, cam, injectors, turbo system and ECU. But I am a total noob with suspension and tire setups. It is my daily driver so I am trying to balance fun and reliability. I would like to do coilovers, 18×8 to8.5 rims. What kind of advice can you give me? What kind of setup should I budget for.
    Car info:
    2L engine, no AC
    6 speed manual
    205/55/R16
    SE model
    Driven 250km per day
    Live in Alberta Canada.

    I see you're still also talking about "preload" in reference to changing suspension height with the spring perch. If you think that's going to affect the performance, maybe look at KW, Bilstein, AST, etc. All of them adjust via the spring perch. Even the top of the line motorsports dampers.

    • @pat88c
      @pat88c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One as going to say same thing
      racing coilovers adjust at the spring perch
      I know Aussie company MCA suspension has take than information from it racing in track and rally to street to time attack cars with same method as claimed adjust height by the spring perch than by the lower perch
      The lower perch adjust the shock travel length
      So by adjusting the lower perch you many case the wheel to hit the guard first than not hit at all if you adjust at the spring

    • @freestyleskyline
      @freestyleskyline 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're forgetting some companies have a straight spring rate, and some are progressive.

    • @TestarossaMusicista
      @TestarossaMusicista 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@freestyleskyline You're right. There are some with progressive rates. Lets consider who most commonly has progressive rates, though. KW, Bilstein, and ST are the most typical users of progressive springs. How do they adjust? With the spring perch.

    • @4bangermafia

      @@freestyleskyline Thats why you will see helper springs.

    • @freestyleskyline
      @freestyleskyline 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TestarossaMusicista starting to wonder if you guys know what "preload" means... Lmao. Would you stand over a spring by itself or one PRELOADED on a shock with only 1 nut holding it on as you zap it off?.. ever changed factory springs? You have to compress them to get the shock out safety. Why? Because they are preloaded/compressed already just to fit on the shock. The compressed length of the spring can affect height which affects length of the stroke. In some cases you aren't going to get any higher twisting the coil spring it just puts more LOAD on the spring in a static stare which translates to them being stiffer. You keep quoting all these other companies like they don't know that period when obviously you're the one with holes in your knowledge
