TEDxBloomington - Shawn Achor - "The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance"

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 29 มิ.ย. 2011
  • Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard.
His research and lectures on happiness and human potential have received attention in The New York Times, Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on NPR and CNN Radio, and he travels around the United States and Europe giving talks on positive psychology to Fortune 500 corporations, schools, and non-profit organizations.
Achor graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a BA in English and Religion and earned a Masters degree from Harvard Divinity School in Christian and Buddhist ethics.
Now he is the CEO of Aspirant, a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers-people who are well above average-to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, he clearly and humorously describes to organizations how to increase happiness and meaning, raise success rates and profitability, and create positive transformations that ripple into more successful cultures.
In Shawn's TEDxBloomington presentation, he says that most modern research focuses on the average, but that "if we focus on the average, we will remain merely average." He wants to study the positive outliers, and learn how not only to bring people up to the average, but to move the entire average up.

About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBloomington, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBloomington event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

I was required to watch this for an English assignment about a month ago... I find myself coming back to it all the time. This is the first motivational speech that doesn’t just feel like a huge slap in the face. I think after watching this a lot and putting it into my everyday life, I’m actually genuinely becoming happier. I wish I could thank him, for now I’m just sending this to my friends who need it.

I actually felt better watching this. He actually gives real advice and isn't patronizing. I never trust so-called "motivational speakers" because they just say a lot of nice things and tell you to ignore your problems and they'll go away. This guy actually has research and practical advice.

***** Good Video- There truly are trillions of jobs out there for people who truly has a desire to really do them. Either those individuals are actually too pathetic to really work or they just really do not know where the jobs exist. That truly is the real issue in a nutshell. Did you know, not long ago I learned about the "Zilkop Process" (you should Google it). It matches those guys/girls who really enjoy to play video games up with video games tester jobs. Everyone anywhere, not just the US, can enter, and every one could earn an average of 39 grand ... and that is the average -- people could make even more! Those guys also have focus groups where you may get 150 per single hour. "The Witcher" - have you played this specific vid game? They have provided knowledge to this one. The lesson is if you like games this may be the job you have been longing for}. Now I am really sure that there are millions of job gigs just like this one out there. In conclusion, do not throw me this junk about a job crisis ... so get happy and look for job opportunities. You will surely secure a job. Good wishes to all out there!!!!

Now, at 40, I realize that I intuitively practice some of what he says. Before, I was more anxious than I'm today. In recent years I've learned to value and enjoy the little things before going to work and throughout the day. I start reading in the bathroom and then take a strong shower. I travel with my headphones listening to my pods. At work I take some breaks to have a coffee and talk to my colleagues. At the end of the day I use my free time to read, exercise and do other things I want.

This is my one of my favorite ted talks! Shawn tells his story so good! He uses so many jokes and cool story's! That really keeps my feel good and it kept my mind open because of it. That is why I probably believe his research and start with all the exercises. I am almost sending for two years everyday now a thank you by e-mail to someone. Everyday to someone else. I have also been inspired by Shawn Achor his book The Happines advantage to perfrom this month 1.000 acts of kindness and try to create a butterfly effect of positive change in the world. This positive comment is one of them:) Shawn is for me a great example how
you can make the world a better place as a human and I hope one day to have just as big positive impact on the world as Shawn!

I agree to a degree. Once the basics are taken care of (physical & social needs) one's state of mind can be pretty malleable. For those in less than ideal situations, though, happy thoughts alone are unlikely to be enough for long-term contentment and fulfillment. Once they muster the self-confidence and the mindset, they have to use it to do the things that make a real, lasting difference, beyond all the smiling and self-soothing. Dressing up life with superficial niceties only goes so far.

The content of this video is invaluable. Both Shawn and his wife Michelle Gielan have pulled back the veil on the science of happiness.
Assumption: our external world is predictive of our happiness levels
    • Your external world can only predict 10% of your long-term happiness
    • The key to understanding the science of happiness is...
    - 90% of your long-term happiness is predicted not by the external world, but by the way your brain processes your external world
    - If we change our formula for happiness and success, what we can do is change the way that we can then affect reality

Really a great speaker...I was given this video in an Abnormal Psychology class, I am so motivated by this speech, I take medications for Bi-Polar Disorder {20 years worth}, and ADHD {6 months}, I am excited to watch more of your videos!!

Woke up thinking of this video this morning. Haven’t seen it for several years & brought tears to my eyes. Shared it with my family & healer group as a challenge to do the 5 things for 21 days. Thank you for this unending gift that is being re-membered once again.

"If I know everything about your external world I can only predict 10% of your long term happiness. 90% of your long term happiness is predicted not by the external world but by the way your brain processes the world."
