Asian Boss What an eye opener. Still, let's face facts. To raise a child you have to be in a really stable job, that is the biggest determining factor. And unless there are incentives for this then it would be something hard to achieve at all.

whats happening is Japanese people have a higher intelligence and therefore are at the cutting edge of civilizational trends. .. we have been marketed this idea of the "magical golden vagina" as a method of validating fragile masculinity as if it was a miracle cure all, but in reality its nothing but Snake Oil. .. working your whole life and sacrificing your personal dreams and goal just for the benefit of women, and to perpetuate Female Privilege without female responsibility, is in the end nothing but a Raw Deal for men.
and its not how this is supposed to work... women need men to survive, they need men to perform all the hard, difficult, demanding, dirty work that women are simply physically incapable of doing .. Men on the other hand don't require women for anything other than reproduction. that is the only net positive benefit they add to a society. And technology is steadily becoming closer to replacing that function as well. when something doesn't work the way its supposed to and becomes horribly inefficient, like Spouses or Motherhood, then you develop a better technology. Artificial Womb tech will become a reality in the future, for now Lifelike Silicone Vaginas and RealDolls are simply a better and more efficient replacement for traditional sex. and Waifu's provide the companionship to replace most of the functions of women.

It's interesting because they are saying that women are becoming more independent, and yet they still want men to lead in their relationships. They don't really have a sense of equality, atleast those interviewed. Men shouldn't have to pay and choose where to go, or even be the only one asking a girl out. I suggest searching for "academy of nutrition and dietetics position vegan" and you will find the conclusion on this topic from the largest organisation of health professionals in the world who have been doing meta studies on this topic for many years.
Either way you gotta admit "herbivore men" just doesn't sound very flattering. You don't want to be called that regardless of what they were actually referring to in the clip.
I think their definition of "Herbivore men" is way too exaggerated... just because you're shy or not comfortable when approaching women doesn't mean you are passive ALL the time in any situation. By the way, I'm surprised by their opinions: I thought that herbivore men just didn't bother with relationships, period. Too mendokusai for them.
funkylilmouse the herbivore men seem "shy" and passive but really that's normal, you'll find it surprising how many of the married men are beta. They ask permission from their wives for literally anything. Large contributor to this trend is unfortunately the Japanese media. It idolises beta men and use them as comedy material, etc. Well that's the normal trend I guess. Also Japan is a society with political correctness and politeness in grained in it's society, especially after the turn of the millennium, like most beta men are relatively young ones, compared to them the older generation who lived through the 50s,60s or the 70s are much more alpha in nature.

A lot of men start off looking for a girlfriend, but they get so tired of trying and facing rejection that they give up. After they give up and let go of the idea of needing a girlfriend, they become so much less depressed and needy. So maybe their brain is rewired to associate women with misery and not chasing women as healthy.
Men who give up chasing a lost cause have seen the light...if women aren't showing interest in you then it's better to just stop playing that stupid game.
If they get tired then it's their issue.
Having a girlfriend doesn't have to be a need. It's not even much of an expectation if you compare it to marriage.

Nayumi, since the beginning of time, male of every type of animal have had to compete against other males for selection of mates. It happens with bulls and it happens with humans too. You can feel sorry for the second grade, but that is just life and that is how all species do natural selection. Still, some of these herbivore men will hook up with women because some women like that style. It takes all types.
This makes the suicide rate in Japan seem less mysterious.
I am a foreigner living in japan in twenties. I have a stable job and I am an Asian but considered good-looking in western cultures. I recently became a herbivore man. The reason is because most girls have too high standard in looks when they find a boyfriend. As their financial power catches up to that of men, they not only raise their standard in terms of earning power but also other factors. It is sad but I decided to stop trying after trying more than enough.

Notice the attitudes that the men and women took here? When asked the questions the men thought it through and gave a fair answer with fairly little bias. The women all pretty much called them no good and laughed at them. Pretty sure that type of attitude is exactly why so many herbivores are in japan. Honestly we have no word for it here in America (closest I heard is mgtow, but it seems to carry a bit of a different connotation), but i think this trend is going to sweep across more places as the divide between male and female ideals grows.

I really disagree with the attitudes here... it seemed especially sad to me that the women were laughing as they placed all these expectations on men. I know it's largely based on societal expectations they've grown up with, but do you really have to say "it's almost as if they expect women to take the lead" with such astonishment?
Well it's Japan...they think a man should be 'manly' by taking the lead. Also, taking the lead is perceived differently there VS USA or Europe. It's not necessarily about being controlling or dominant, but showing off that you put a lot of effort into the date (such as choosing what nice restaurant to go to, where they should go sight seeing).
It's not as though I expected much different... after all, the same attitudes exist in the west, just depends on where you're looking.
Totally agree that having direction is important, but that doesn't have to do with gender to me. Whoever invites should have a plan ready. That's just manners. I'm just saying that women shouldn't be so presumptuous that a guy will always take the first step, do the inviting, and in particular, always pay for things. A lot of these women might say, "oh, I'm too shy to do something like that" or make other excuses. But if you can apply that reasoning to yourself, can't you extend some empathy to guys who might feel the same way? That's why I feel it was wrong of them to laugh about it.
Maybe leadership roles for women should also put in dating and relationships.
If you live in a culture that values men over women as much as Japans' does, then yeah I would be suprised that a woman should approach the man. In these cultures, women are expected to be passive (and they're socialised this way), while men should be upfront and pursue the woman - its fucking weird that they dont.

I'm glad these folks don't blame the herbivore men themselves for the lack of sex. From my observations living in Tokyo, a government that tells people to choose either a career or a family; a culture that promotes 'hard work' over common sense and a media industry that EMASCULATES men are more or less contributors to PRODUCING herbivore men.
I talked to some Japanese men at an idol concert last week and one guy spent probably $300 USD on getting MANY pictures with this one girl! I was like "This guy could have used that money to take a REAL girl out on a date or spend some time with her. Most of the other guys I talked to said they were "too shy" to talk to a girl. I told them if they gave up JAV for 30 days and did something else with their time, they'd get results but they were too addicted to give it up.

i used to co own a bar and am in my early 40s and i slept with almost 40 women since teenage but stopped the life style a decade back after maturing up and considering the irresponsible damages that had and could be done if i carry on. My rock n roll lifestyle also took its toll on me as I get older and from that i lost alot of weight thanks to liver problems.
At this age I just focus on my job and steer clear off women which i might be tempted to bring out the wolf in me again as this may probably be the last leg of my life to make money for retirement and to make the best of what i havent destroyged.
as for women i don't respond as i did before and am labelled a herbivore for that when it is impolite to tell them that i am not turned on by crude women which does not understand culture, true feminine beauty, softness and decency.
I need a woman that i could build a proper family upon and have zero interest on those which does not have what i need to help raise proper family. besides our generation today tend to take marriage too lightly and forgotten that a family may be the only avenue for one to draw a profound purpose in life in the midst of all the wretchedness we are seeing around us today.

If not for work and school, I could stay in my house for weeks without being bored. The problem is if there are all to much singles and not enough families to sustain a society long term with the production of new citizens - and this is the problem in places like Japan... Being freely and happy a single should not be stigmatized, but in the same time it is important for enought people to produce families and children. Also there is the thing that there are many singles that are even without societys expectations sad to be alone...

I can sympathise with herbivore men a lot! I'm probably a western equivalent. I've concluded it's better to avoid romance entirely and live a basically asexual life. I have lots of reasons for this, many of which aren't related to modern life. For instance, I think relationships are hard work and bring drama and distraction and attachment and absorption into the other and a loss of autonomy, amongst other things. Whereas being single I'm free to focus on my work and can remain autonomous.
But emotionally speaking I feel sympathy for herbivore men. In my younger years I dreamed of finding love, and the message I feel I was taught on how best to do that, was to be a kind, nice, gentle man. The message I received was to think of women equally, and not my lessers. The message I received from film and tv was that the jock quarterback types and the rich businessmen types would end up the losers, and the bumbling, sweet man would win the girl in the end. So I think I unconsciously adopted this role.
But as I aged I learned that most women don't actually find this kind of man attractive. Most women find more dominant and aggressive men attractive. At least that's been my experience. So I decided to stop caring what women want, and just be whoever I want to be. But I still feel quite sad that a lot of my personality, which is similar to these herbivore men, is mocked and looked down upon as being weak and unmasculine.
How do you deal with not having any intimacy? Are you using prostitutes? Can porn really replace that need?

@@tkpp766 Don't know him personally but an older member of my community told me about it while giving me relationship advice: do not show such emotion in company of gf/fiancee/wife or your kids.
Whenever I see a woman who expects a man to do stuff or be something just because they are "men", I lose interest in them right away. I've found that it's waste of time to chase that kind of women. They will eventually disappoint you because they are shallow and not mature enough to think beyond gender roles.
I think Japan is just behind when it comes to gender equality and gender roles. They might play a bigger role in Japan than they do in other countries. If I compare this to my own home country, people nowadays would never say these kinds of things :/

It's interesting how one of the girls said that she would want a man to lead because she is uncomfortable making decisions, but she's not understanding that another human being may also be uncomfortable with making decisions like that. Whether it is a male or a female, it shouldn't really be a difference. There is this stereotype that all men are strong and take initiative, but I think people are dismissing the fact that some men really aren't like that. Maybe they want to make sure a girl feels comfortable and may ask what she wants too in a situation. I would honestly date someone like that and I think it is actually become more common not only in Japan, but different parts of the world, especially as people are becoming more aware of the effect of stereotypes, the differences that people have, and individuality.

Good, more men will be able to pursue their passions in business, art, science, or the countless other things that interest. Do what makes you happy, don’t give in to social pressures.
When it comes to the debate on gender stereotypes and "what men/women want", here's the thing;
When life really sucks, when you're as sick as a dog, and when you're on your death bed and your life is flashing before your eyes, you're not going to give a single damn about how rich, famous, hot, manly/feminine, powerful, charming, or talented you are or your close family/friends are. Because those aren't the things in life that make life worth living.
What we want in our relationships is all the same; for someone to truly give a damn about us and our existence as much as we give a damn about them and their existence. Herbivore men don't sound bad at all. I would probably like a nice power balance though. I'd really prefer if it were 50/50 thing instead of a 0/100 on either side. That woman who said finance have to do with the low birth rate is right. You can list the other reasons for lack of sex or low birth rate in Japan, however the reality is if you cannot make enough to support a newborn increasing the birth rate would be difficult. Along with other contributing factors like getting laid off of work, low wages, or not even support can throw a wrech for future plans of having a child. I think the real focus on what needs to happen is how can Japanese improve their economy with higher wages, support from the government and decreasing the amount of overworking due to the Japanese culture's mindset.

I'm so into herbivore men. My definition of them is a bit different though. Herbivore men aren't always indecisive or feminine. If you're super kind, aren't insensitive to girls' feelings, gentle, and not on the talkative side, I would consider them herbivore. My ex was like this and he was macho. I'd take them over fuckboys and jocks anyday.

I am not Japanese but Costs of living and rasing a child aside. The Herbivore men are usually drop dead handsome (from what I have heard from women and men alike). The Irony is the fact that they attract women with just a little effort yet they choose not to for a multitude of reasons not 1. This is why it looks like the carnivore men/women get more girls. It is like a balance of sorts.

I'm not japanese so I could be wrong. but I heard in japan that overwork is a huge problem and even in school there's a lot of academic pressure because of entrance exams and whatnot. this may also be part of the reason why the suicide rate is so high. maybe if the economy is this tough and expectations are so high to produce results, japanese men are putting more of their attention towards those problems. as I'm sure japanese women probably are as well. birth rate is probably declining because things are expensive too.
That's a big part part of the problem. If you've not heard of the 'hikikomori' then I'd recommend googling them. They are a group of people (mostly men) in Japan who hace dropped out of society and live like shut ins, mostly because they couldnt cope with the stressful demands and expectations of Japanese culture (mainly school and career ladder) places upon them when they were growing up. It really is a high pressure culture.
If women ever want to be treated as equal to men, they need to understand that herbivore men are the path to making both women and men equal as both the man and woman are working together as one person. The man is not the only person in the relationship; gl on the birth rate🤦🏻♀️
What I love about this channel is hearing how different cultures are in Asia to what I'm used to. While I wouldn't have a problem asking a girl out if I wanted to, I also wouldn't have a problem with a girl asking me out. From the outside it seems to me that Japanese women want men to take charge in relationships and a large number of men don't want to do this. If those percentages were true then women have to ask men out as well, instead of just waiting waiting for men to ask them out. There is a reason why we have something called arrange marriages. So that even herbivore men and women can find love or at least companionship. Unfortunately that cultural belief is on the decline as people are becoming more independent and adapting to a western lifestyle where it's important to lose virginity but avoid marriage. And this westernisation of culture is not limited to Japan. But the way these women are reacting to herbivore men is so pessimistic. It's like they only want an alpha. This is why men need to stop being gentlemen.
You're going too far the wrong way. You don't need to be "alpha" - you just need to be confident and if someone rejects you, forget about it and move on to the next woman. It has nothing to do with being a decent person or "gentleman".
Yes, some guys have it easier because of traits they didn't earn (looks, resources, etc) - but so what? Nothing you can do about it except work on making yourself interesting and keep trying. No, the super model type may not notice you or even the so called "average" ones may not notice you, but in my experience like tends to end up with like - meaning most couples are similar in appearance, personality, ambition, etc. Yes, there are exceptions - but they are a small percentage.
If you genuinely realize personality matters more - as do shared beliefs/viewpoints, you'll be happier. Looks fade - also people get medical conditions or accidents that can dramatically alter looks - people who base relationships on those looks are in trouble once the prime factor for the relationship is gone.
Well I wasn't generalising when I said they want an alpha and let's not forget we are not talking about america or any other western countries where cultural practice or principles holds little to no significance. I am simply pointing out that these strong independent women live in a society where 60%(according to their survey) are herbivore men or beta males and yet they all firmly imply that they only want someone with traits of an alpha because they want to be led but don't want to lead. Which is quite ignorant of them. But who knows if Asian Boss edited out the parts where the women are more accepting just to sensationalise the topic.
Anyways, that's why I've stated that when arrange marriages were widely existent such things didn't matter because there was no real requirement and that people learned to adapt and accept each other which is why relationships lasted longer and were successful.
But now people have choices and criteria where both genders are constantly competing to get acknowledged and accepted by the other. This is when such things like being a gentlemen, masculine or confident came into effect. And became pretty much a necessity to attract others and keep them entertained and interested in you. But even then many relationships don't last very long. That's why I've stated that men don't need to stop being gentlemen and start being themselves because that's who you truly are.

I think the problem are inconsistent expectations. There were always a lot of social obligations and expectations placed on the two sexes, but in the past they were rather clear cut, you acted upon your social programming, which worked pretty damn well.

IDK about Japan but in the west 70% of the divorce is filed by women and they receive alimony 97% of the time and 2/3 of the time they get custody over the child. Nowadays it's become a trend and it's always the male who gets the blame while the woman's called "strong and independent". Honestly, I think marriage has become too risky for men, they can lose their social reputation, status and wealth due to a single allegation. And for men whenever there's an allegation it's "guilty unless proven innocent" not the other way around like it's supposed to be

I think the whole problem is about people finding responsibility a pain in the ass. If I recommend a restaurant to my group, and it turns out to be not that good, then I feel guilty and embarrassed. So, next time my group goes to a restaurant, the easiest thing for me would be to not choose any place and just go wherever others are going. I feel this mentality of not wanting to take responsibility is making many people of both sexes passive, and they want the other sex to take the initiative.
