acting polite to not hurt someone is also done in neighboring countries of japan albeit it gets toned down the farther the country is from japan and east asia in general. in my country in southeast asia, some do this and try to find a sentence phrasing to make it sound better although its not a common thing to do. only sometimes. i suppose in japan, its a common established behavior

How about asking Japanese if they feel asians, like connected with other Asian cultures, or they feel independent, Japanese only, different and not that much related to other Asians. (I live in UK and people here don't refer themselves as Europeans, only as British and feel completely disconnected with the rest of Europe)
Japanese view themselves as separate, and they see Taiwan as like similar to them (like a new mini Japan). They do know that DNA wise the Koreans and Chinese are related to them of course.
Good point, Japanese feel different because it isolated itself from Asia for a long time in history There was even a period where the government only allowed Portuguese to come to Japan to trade. The culture is unique. Japan does not celebrate lunar new year as many other Asian countries do, and being a housewife is still very popular in Japan, unlike China.
I think many Japanese think we are independent from Asia. We had cultural and historical relations with China back in the 7th century (Tang dynasty) when Kanji was brought; And then the Portuguese came in the 17th century and western things were brought.
China, Portuguese and Dutch are only countries that had historical relations with Japan.

The Japanese were very wary of Westerners and the foreign culture they might introduce in Japan and so didn't trust the Portuguese because they usually brought Christianity (Roman Catholicism) with them. The Dutch at the other hand were pragmatic Protestants who were genuinely only interested in trade. The Japanese understood that and hence only allowed the Dutch in Japan. And even then: the Dutch were not allowed into mainland Japan, but were only assigned a small artificial island called Deshima in Dutch, at the southern Japanese coast, and were not allowed to bring their Dutch women with them, because the Japanese didn't want the Dutch to actually "settle" there and thus colonize the area.

Living here in Japan for 22 years straight I figured out one thing for sure , it’s extremely difficult to have real Japanese friends here , most people are definitely cold and fake , even when they are being polite and helpful. I don’t see sincerity, it seems more like the Japanese society is programmed to be treated in the same level of education, but isn’t motivated by heart.
People naturally put people in groups. It's a natural way of protecting yourself. Very primal however.

I have never heard the misconception that foreigners think of Japanese girls as easy. In fact, I think it's quite the opposite because it is rare to see Japanese women date non-asian men...

Stereotypes are usually made because of mistakes. People shouldn't judge different cultures based on their own cultural habits and world-view.
I feel like if someone wants to understand some culture well, being interested in this how people are living nowadays is not enough. There are many historical aspects which affect people's way of thinking and their behavior. Many things can be confusing for foreigners, but once you really start to learn about some country culture, history etc then you can really see, that's a little bit deeper topic and that we really shouldnt look at them based on ur own culture.

It's not sad I think they just don't put such meaning in sharing their opinions. And of course it depends on the situation.
It's not that they never show them to _anybody_, they just don't tend to show them _publicly_.
It's about not letting the other person feel bad. If you get a present from a friend and you don't like it, do you tell them and make them feel bad or say "Thanks" and put it away.
I think it really depends on the person more than anything. As not everyone may be like that. However, yes, generally speaking Japanese people are like that. It comes down to the tatemae/honne aspect. It’s like at home you may not be that way, but in public you are. It’s like wearing a mask really. The mask may not reflect what you truly feel on the inside. However, Japanese from a young age are taught to always show respect to everyone and their elders and always be polite no matter the situation really. I sadly am the same way though. I’m Japanese American, raised in the U.S., but was born in Japan. I can definitely say that I’m not one to show my feelings or opinions really and that I’m a very private and personal type of person. I think that all Asian cultures practice this type of aspect to a certain degree though.

as an japanese i often do get told "you're japanese??? you're so lucky! " or "i wish i was born japanese" and i often feel counfused i get that a lot of people like our country for it's media and environment but we east asians are treated as gods and goddesses and i don't think we're all that great truly. we were just born here, it's nothing that special, sure we're quite clean and sure we're developed in some places than other countries but we're not GODS just humans, there's nothing THAT special about being borned as a specific person from a specific country like i have to admit that i do really hate our country at times our judical system is the really worst and we have high suicides rates . there are instances online where many pretend to be japanese and its quite obvious because they mention about how great it is being japanese and post about it everywhere and give people misconceptions about our country being the best. not everyone here is nice just be proud of your own country ok please? it's also common that some (SOME i say) foreigners are just into south asians and why? because we're cute? it is quite offensive that they are always like "you're japanese so you have to be pretty." @@toboichitosu6143 I am brazilian. In the world cup hosted in Brazil on 2014, they would clean and collect not only the garbage they'd make but also from other people. It was on the news everytime. Showing videos everytime after every match, they all would get their plastic bag, collect all the trash left by the people before leaving the stadium. We were trully impressed.

Wellll, I've lived in Japan most of the time since 1991, and I think the stereotypes are MOSTLY true. Only difference is the degree. If non-Japanese think that 90% of Japanese are a certain way, in fact maybe only 60% are, but it's still a majority. For example, Japanese women are not ALWAYS passive, but still more passive than Americans! Just look at the way they act in the video: quiet, calm and agreeable
I tend to assume most people think of a stereotype as a common or average trait. When stereotypes are directly addressed, it's often framed as "Not all X are like Y", when most people who hold the stereotype weren't even considering it as a universal. Weirdly enough, it then feels more stereotypical to hear "X people hold wrong beliefs about Y group".
Eh though japanese people in general are more calm and agreeable so anyone going to seem more passive than a loud mouth american lol...

Yes I eat kimchi almost every day (we just have it as a side dish although some people don't eat it at all).
No I haven't had any plastic surgery. (I can say that 95% of the girls I've met, ones born with monolids, have gotten the double eyelids surgery done)

As a Korean, i think It is exaggerated that 95 percent of Korean girls underwent double-eyelid surgery....i think about 40 to 50 percent of Korean girls(mono-eyelid one) had gotten double eyelid surgery done.

I teach English to Japanese adults and yes not everyone is polite. There is tatemae and there is honne and it is really hard to distinguish their genuine feelings.
the problem about lying all the time, is that in the end you yourself will not be able to distinguish them.
reason why tatemae and honne are very dangerous and japanese doesn't realize this.
they are lie nonetheless, and if you say them all the time everyday, like they do. This is the consequances, even the interviews will be empty and not interesting since you have no idea, if they say what they think, or what they think you want to hear.

I mean, I do agree with her that a lot of foreign men come to Japan to get a girl because they think they have better chances with them...but they're not all bad (I'm a girl BTW haha).
To be fair, I think foreign men in the US from many countries have better chances with US girls as well, women love certain accents, and foreign men can be seen as "exotic", or just anything outside the norm.

This video seems to focus on Western stereotypes of Japanese women but not on Western stereotypes of Japanese men. I wish they spoke to more men because they are more negatively maligned from Westerners than the women are.

HindsightPOV I wouldn’t say that’s true. I have many positive impressions of Japanese men, and Japanese people in general. They strike me as considerate, thoughtful, hard working, with a sense of humor and appreciation of camaraderie and friendship (even if friendship doesn’t come easily-perhaps it’s even regarded more highly because of that). They also have a deep appreciation for art and culture, which I appreciate.
