  • Recently, a pro-gamer in Japan got canceled for saying that men under 170cm (5’7”) “do not have human rights.” But did you know that, according to studies, the average height for men in Japan is around 170cm? So, what do ordinary Japanese people think about this statement, and what do they consider to be the ideal height for Japanese men? We hit the streets of Tokyo to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Japanese population.

As someone who's really short (157), I don't mind the occasional jokes about my height. I've learned to live with those. What I don't like is my height being compared or equated to my worth as a person. Many times have I heard demeaning comments that make me question my self-worth because of something I can't control. It hurts.

It's one thing to have a preference for a certain height, but a whole other and much worse thing to be negative to people who are not of the height range that you decided is good. There's effectively zero control over one's height (some minor diet influence growing up but that's more to do with your parents than yourself, so again out of YOUR control), making it a really messed-up factor to rude or belittling or discriminatory to someone for.
Nobody should ever be judged for factors which are truly out of their control, unfortunately we do not live in such a world. But videos like this help us collectively get closer to the ideal :)

We didn't grow that much taller until about a hundred years ago, due to improvements in living conditions not because we were chugging down milk every day. We're known for our dairy production, so I understand where that assumption comes from. Sources in the Netherlands however say that our average height hasn't increased in the last ten years but has been stable or declining since. According to national statistics men in 2020 were (self-reportedly) 182,9m tall and women (self-reportedly) 169,3m tall.
I think we're so used to seeing straight couples where the man is taller than the woman, especially in media, that we've come to assume that this is supposed to be the norm in society. I mean, have you ever seen a romcom where the woman was taller than the man and the film wasn't about her height?

Interesting conversation. I remember seeing a national observational study conducted by Waseda some years back concluding that Japanese men's average height is increasing due to consistently better nutrition. Genetics may play some role but nutrition probably accounts for a greater proportion of the variability in the population.
Japanese birth rate is declining fast though due to insane Japanese working culture "karoshi". I would love to see Asian Boss do a video discussing average age of Japanese getting married and having children in this context.

    • @fairybreadjp
      @fairybreadjp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think that would be an interesting video and highly suspect this average age would be different for people in Tokyo vs suburbia or the countryside, with the average age of parenthood being lower for the latter.
“Karoshi” means death by overwork so I think it’s a misnomer to say birth rates are declining due to “karoshi.” It’d probably be a bit more accurate to describe the situation as: birth rates are being affected by a multitude of societal factors or issues including (but not exclusively) the work culture.

Did you live twenty years ago?The Japanese have not grown taller for more than twenty years.
In fact, the Japanese have been around 170 centimeters since the 1980s.The recent news is that the average height of the new generation of Japanese young people has not only not increased but has decreased.
In contrast, the heights of Northern Chinese and Koreans began to approach the level of Europeans.Especially the people from North China.
The economy in North China is worse than that of South Korea and Japan, but they are actually taller than South Koreans.
According to the latest survey and research, the average height of 19-year-old northern Chinese has exceeded 176 centimeters, and can even reach 177 centimeters in Shandong Province and Manchuria.Korean data is 174.9 cm.
As China industrializes, the heights of Chinese are returning to their historical levels. The reason why Japanese are shorter is because of the "island effect". Mammals living on islands are generally shorter. This is because there is very little food on the islands. People with the tall gene will be eliminated by the environment if they do not get enough food.

Same applies to North Korea before the kim family regime starved the unprivileged population. Korean height maps showed that north Koreans were significantly taller in measurement of cms. North Koreans on average honestly would be the height of those in Shandong had they not been restricted of nutrients. The gene for the tall height is there but the nutrition isn’t. The Japanese on the other hand never had said genes and had always been short despite not going through nowhere near as many famines and times of poverty as the Chinese and Koreans. I think diet, advanced health care, and food additives are the main reason East Asians (not just Japanese) are getting taller. Look at Koreans for example. If you look at the height difference between the elderly in Korea and the younger generation, the height difference is substantial. And Korean men are considered to be the one of the tallest Asian groups now.
But Korea used to be one of the poorest countries before the Korean War. Diet, poverty, and lack of health care mattered. And after the war all of those were addressed. Korea became one of the fastest developing countries in the world.
The only big difference I see between Korea and Japan, on this topic, is the acceptance of western food (which tend to contain lots of additives). Koreans by far eat more western food than the Japanese, imo. I say this bc I live in Korea and often went to Japan before Covid.

She could be referring to the fact that Westerners have cold climate and not fertile land, hence they are hunters? But its obviously wrong. Hunters and cultivators co existed mostly. It is their ethnicity that determines height. Certain ethnic groups are characterised by average shorter height, doesn't mean they weren't hunters. Did you know that kids tend to take the height of their opposite-gender parent? So it's not surprising that the one person taller than you is your dad, you took his height genes. My family's tallest members are myself and my uncle at around 182 cm, so you are taller than all of us

Not all sweetness and light for tall people. Airline seats, sports cars, amusement park rides, that sort of thing. But we're easy to spot in a crowd.

Saying Japanese people were always short in the past is false. Actually Samurai were quite tall and this mainly because of their diet. No one likes to talk about this, especially the Japanese Government but the standard of food and how much milk/vegetables children in Japan eat now is lower than the past. Their diet is not as great as it used to be - lots of sugar in everything and bread is becoming more and more common for breakfast (asa gohan). You can look up the soldiers, warriors, samurai of Japan and compare their heights to the Japanese now and see a huge difference. Back then they trained, ate well and really built-up their bodies - it wasn't just the armour and facial hair that made them a scary force.

you know how the British Hong Kong troops fell to the Japanese? the British commander told his subordinate that he is an "idiot" for reporting a Japanese attack in the middle of the night because he sincerely believed the Japanese couldn't see in the dark due to their slanted eyes. he obviously died.
even when Churchill sent his best "unsinkable" ships to Java he probably didn't think much of the Japanese. wrong!

I’m from the Netherlands and I can confirm that we drink a lot of milk to get tall. No just kidding, no idea why we so tall (I’m Dutch-Asian and I’m 184 cm). But seriously, the average height here is for men 184 cm and for woman 170 cm!

Highly doubt it's the dairy. My maternal Korean grandmother is 5'9 and all her grandsons are past 6 ft. They don't drink cow milk to due to lactose intolerance.

Among various physical traits, height is the one that is strongly determined by genetics. It’s a textbook example. Of course non-biological factor do play a role, such as nutrition. However, genetics constitute the largest share of the difference in height between unrelated individuals
Sexual selection is a significant factor as well. A survey of Dutch women found a strong preference for tall men. This led researchers to theorize that over time the Dutch female preference for tall men resulted in offsprings with the “tall” gene

Loving the sarcastic guy with the black hat and glasses, has human rights and grateful to be alive lol. He has short legs and disappointed he can't walk as fast. What a legend!

And he is right with the short legs issues. I am 162 cm short and husband is 183 cm tall and when we are going for a walk I am always kind of running besides him. He takes one step and I take some more. So you tiny Japanese women there are some short comings being in a relationship with a tall guy..

    I find short guys cute
But I noticed that so many of them are rude and think that I'm always looking down on them (I'm 173cm), probably because they are often looked down upon 😔
