USING TISSUE PAPER IN MIXED MEDIA ART - Which side to use? Experiments

  • I've been using tissue paper in mixed media art for some years and I now use a wet strength tissue paper (stronger than the usual gift tissue paper). Questions have come up as to whether it is better to use media on the shiny/ glossy side or the other side. So I tested the paper I use with a few different media and on the gel plate. Watch the video to see the results.

    Kylie, what an amazing video! This was some awesome side by side with all the different paints, inks and pencils whew. Thank you for including our stencils in your experimenting adventures. It was great to see your clean plates and when doing these types of pulls really does make a difference. Bravo!!!! And thank you again.

      Thank you. Some of the carnival paper is on its way to you so I'll be interested to hear what you think of it. I've actually cleaned my plates again since making this video - it could become a habit lol. And of course I love using your stencils :)

    Interesting. When I heard the introduction I was thinking "Good, now I do not have to do that myself". But quite to the contrary! Now I have to go to my studio and try different media, different qualities of tissue papers, rice papers and stuff. I also have some more techniques of gelprinting I would like to try on the different sides of tissue papers. I liked the systematic way you worked, and a good idea to try!! :-)

    This was enlightening! I have always avoided using tissue paper for a dry pull thinking it would tear--perhaps this Carnival brand is a bit tougher. I also noticed that this paper did not 'stretch' out as much as the brand I have been using. I will watch this again to see if I missed anything the first time through! In doing the side-by-side comparisons, there is no doubt as to how the products and paper perform. Useful information to be sure--thank you!

    Thanks Kylie, that was very interesting to see. I was surprised as I thought the shiny side would have pulled the print more readily without sticking, in most cases so an eye opener there for me. I didn’t even know there was a special tissue paper to use with water so a very useful time spent here with you xx

    Kylie-Excellent video! I was just looking at some deli paper tonight and wondering 🤔 which side to use…I noticed a bit more shine on one side of the deli paper compared to the other side and also as it compared to wet strength tissue paper…I’ll give it a go with your approach and the supplies I have on hand…I enjoy the process of discovery! Thank you for sharing this very helpful video! 🙏🎨👍

    Never use a heat tool on your plate.. that's what I am concerned about here :)

    • @KylieCooStudio
      @KylieCooStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not recommended - what would be hard to see from the film is that the heat tool was well above the plate and I was moving it constantly. I was really warming the air above and around it so that hopefully the paint would dry a bit quicker. But you are absolutely right in what you say. Thank you.

    • @sandyfranklin1123
      @sandyfranklin1123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I nearly had a stroke when you used a heat tool on your gel plate! It could melt!! Just a thought you might try the “world’s smallest leaf blower” from Amazon - very inexpensive and easy to use, it just blows air without heat!
