    Hi Kari. I put the watered glue in a bowl and put the fabric in that, squeeze it out and let dry. It's faster that way and I can do a batch of fabric. I love what you've done! TFS.

    OMG! You just reminded me of something we used to use when I used to work in a fabric store. I forget the name of it but there is a product that you brush onto fabric that turns it into paper. You can tear the fabric like you do paper. Oh darn ! I can’t remember the name of it. It gives almost the same result you got but you start out with fabric. I will check it out and get back to you about it.

    If you wanted an aged or distressed look you can put instant coffee in the water you mix the glue in and it will "paint" it with a patina

      Can you tell me what her glue:water ratio is? I heard it (I think) the first time I watched this vid and failed to write it down, now I’ve watched 3 more times and get so distracted watching the process, I miss the ratio. I tried wining it, but my tissues lifted from the fabric 😢. Please help a fellow crafter with an attention problem 😅.

      @@stellabella6839 Start with a 1 to 1 ratio and add more glue or water til it looks like hers. Keep your paper on the plastic base, and peel it off after it dries completely.

    I had a go and decided I was too impatient to spend time smoothing out cheesecloth with PVA glue and a brush. Instead I used a plastic bowl (glue will peel out of it if dried) and put my cheesecloth in the bowl and added diluted PVA and mixed it in the bowl with gloved hands. Smoothed it out on the plastic trash bag and it was wonderful. *Caveat* sweet little feral Tillie hasn’t learned the ways of being a house cat with a million art projects going on at once. I heard her crying and came down to find a ton of cat hair and paw prints in the tacky glue. A quick wipe down with a wet washcloth and she was good to go although I did consult a Vet and she said it was not toxic to cats in the small amount she probably ingested. So a potential disaster now has a sentimental touch.

    • @KariGibsonArt
      @KariGibsonArt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh Kate, that's hilarious, or should I say, hairlarious! Tillie is a little bundle of mischief, but I'm glad the glue is non toxic to cats. The bowl idea is a good one, I think I'll do that next time, you are so clever to figure that out. 😀💗💗

    Fabulous! Great cover. I also like that it is strong, fabric, and translucent. Would love to know how it stands up to wear and tear over time.
    About 5 years ago, I made a cover for my checks using two layers of brown paperbag paper painted with acrylic paint. It has taken a beating in my purse because I have my eyeglasses, my wallet, and keys in there. After about 5 years, it is beginning to show some wear around the corners and some edges. I used some bookbinding tape on the fold to protect it. Everyone thought it was leather. They had a hard time believing it was paper. I thought it would only last a few months. To my surprise, it has been over 5 years

    Oooh lovely! Must admit I’ve never seen this idea before. My ‘girls’ look to me for new ideas and I think, well I know, one of them would be very interested. A small group of us, 5 in total, meet every Friday afternoon for a variety of crafty stuff, eg. cross stitch, chicken scratch, embroidery, making and covering boxes, mosaic work … I’ve got them making felt ornaments and after finding a huge box filled with silk scarves of all sizes (you wouldn’t believe it) I’m working on how to simplify silk painting in the room we have allocated just for us! They have done scrapbooking but as everyone is French they stick to regimented designs, so boring I could die! So back to this project it’s certainly got me excited! Never done journaling myself but it’s something I may like 🤔 …. I have a few sketchbooks in my stash because I can’t resist buying them …. I was thinking of making a book cover for one … do you think your idea is flexible for a hard book cover? Anyway must dash as it’s Friday and the girls are meeting up! I’ve subscribed because your ideas are gorgeous and you sound like a lot of fun!

    I've used a similar tecnique to make a long hinge on one side of two pieces of card, hardboard or thin mdf to make a front and back cover for a folder or book. I've used a piece of old bed sheet cut to length and stuck down like you do by soaking the fabric with pva glue and leaving to dry. It creates very strong and flexible hinge which can be painted or left as it is. I've also pasted several coats of pva on the hinge to make the hinge even stronger.

    I like your attitude - experiment and learn! I've literally been doing a fabric painting experiment with this video playing next to me for a bit of company and visual inspiration. The translucent paper with the floral design is gorgeous!
    My experiment has produced mixed results - some parts are good, so I'll remember that technique, and some parts are truly awful, so onto the next technique experiment for those. I'm taking notes, and hopefully I end up with something that's excellent from top to bottom.
    Thanks for chilling with me today.
