    The way I see it, there are no devastating mistakes in mixed media or art journaling. I just keep experimenting and glueing down new layers until I'm happy. If I'm not happy then I'm not finished. The mistakes and the learning process is what makes it all interesting.

      yes I completely agree with you, I do the same but for a beginner who doesn't know how to fix them it brings a lot of frustration.

    I've always wanted to do mixed media but too scared to start..

      The one thing I love about mixed media is that there's no right or wrong and its very forgiving if you make "mistakes" because there's no such thing. you can be imperfect and still get amazing results. I encourage you to watch more of my mixed media videos or others on my channel that encourage you to create.

    Thank you for this video. I have often wondered why people keep saying "use gesso" in videos. I didn't think it made any difference one way or the other. Showing the effect it has vs. not using it made it definitely seem worth that extra step. I appreciate your showing the reasons for the other processes, too. 🙂

    • @KerenTamir
      @KerenTamir  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't always use gesso it just depends on what I'm doing. if the paper is thick enough then I don't always add it. There are reasons why we use gesso, it just depends on what you're doing. I'm glad you found it helpful.

    LOL...I am not so patient myself. What do you think about gesso'ing (or gel medium) the backside of the paper. I get that moisture can overwhelm the paper and problems can occur. However the difference in the look of spraying watercolor onto paper vs. onto gesso is great. I'm betting that creating a firmer substrate by coating the back of the paper just might work. I'm not one for working in journals, I do each project separately.
    And I totally agree about using paper that's thick enough to stand up to all the 'artistic abuse'...LOL....
    Thanks for the video.

    • @KerenTamir

      thank you so much Christine!! yes some of them do. I've had to remove some pages in some, and others I almost removed half of the book and created a second book (you can see that in my last art journal flip through I posted a couple of months ago). There's also an option to go with the Joggles Disc bound journals then you add or remove as many pages as you want. The pages are removable.

    One small recommendation- it might be worth trying a product like Golden’s Absorbent Ground (similar to other brands of watercolor ground) instead of gesso to prime your paper/sketchbooks if you’re planning to use fluid, water-based media… As is visible in the first example you show, water-soluble pigments absorb very differently in gesso than in paper… Maybe you can make it work, but I would think doing any kind of serious watercolor onto gesso would be very iffy, & would end up looking quite different from how it would if done on proper watercolor paper. Absorbent ground seems like a pretty ideal compromise. It primes the paper with a protective layer, but it’s specifically designed to have absorbent properties for use with water-based fluid media, similar to watercolor paper, so you can do a lot of the kinds of wet into wet, lifting, reactivating of paint, etc., that you can do in watercolor & get similar dispersion, similar effects. It may not be a perfect substitute, but I’d expect it to perform a lot better than gesso for that purpose; tooth isn’t exactly what you need for absorbent media.

    An enormously helpful video and tips. Thank you so much. :) You know, I stumbled upon your channel about a week ago, and immediately loved the project in progress. However, since then it has mentally puzzled me as to why you seemed so familiar. It's just now suddenly dawned on me. Your face reminds me of that awesome little girl whom played Matilda in the Danny de Vito film of the same title. She had a genuine, intelligent, gentle face which one could never forget but with thoughts of honesty and integrity. I'm not talking about the content of the film or the actions of it's composition; just that your face reminds me of her. I also think that you must be one of the top must go to channels on the tube for arts and crafts. Thank you for sharing all that you do in arts and crafts. :)

    One of the easiest things to remember if you want to avoid brownish colors, is that blending the three primary colors - red, yellow, and blue - is what produces brown. I’ve been watching TH-cam channels hosted by artist & crafters for years and have yet to hear this tip. (I suspect it’s because it’s something so elementary to painting and color theory, artists know it on an almost instinctual level, so they never really think about it. I’m not saying no one else has mentioned it, only that I’m surprised it’s not mentioned more often when teaching this.) As an example, if you mix/blend green (blue + yellow) with red or any color containing red (like pinks, purples, or oranges), you will get some shade and intensity of brown in the resulting color. Purple (blue + red) shouldn’t be combined with yellow or any color containing yellow, like greens or oranges, etc. The shade and intensity of brown depends on the shade and amount & intensity of the pigment(s) in each separate color. It makes sense if you think about the 3 primary colors kind of canceling each other out or neutralizing each other.

    • @KerenTamir
      @KerenTamir  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you're right that people don't say it often enough. I have said it in the past but not in every video. Its hard to mention everything lol. That tip is golden!!

    • @KerenTamir
      @KerenTamir  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      do you mean a 90lbs paper? I do use 90lbs for things but each company is different. best thing to do is experiment and see how it works. I always say with mixed media the thicker the better.
