I can't believe we need to keep on telling DC Comics this BUT Batman is compassionate and has a big heart of gold!!! Yeah he's dark and edgy but that is only used to scare bad guys!!! He just has a spooky exterior but when you get to know him, he's really sweet!!! 😤😤😤👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤❤❤
They actually did him justice in BTAS. But, in the brilliand minds of DC's genius executives, Frank Miller """"edgyness"""" had to bleed into every batman project and ruin everything like it's their job to.
The answer is in the middle. Yes he's sweet and kind but he's also heavily traumatized which leads to those darker tendencies. He has demons he can't completely fight off. And I believe that what Miller showed us isn't a non canon alternate future. It's the natural conclusion for the life of a man like that
@@user-mx4is4fx3c Don't get me wrong, I like the dark knight but as you say, there should a middle ground. lt's just that DC execs miss the mark time and again by obsessing with the edgy, no nonsense, Miller-y vigilante, that was a product of its time (80s). BTAS and Nolan gave us variations of the middle ground, that is why they were so successful. The DC and WB marketing teams can't seem to grasp it or don't want to understand because they just want to sell toys.
@@ramahan21 Nolan's wasn't the middle ground. He was basically a noble hero that just wanted to fulfill his father's dream. His psychological turmoil is minimal.
But yeah, DC seems to be very lenient to the darker side of him
@@ramahan21 I do think that Affleck's Batman was closer to both sides though. Sure, we see him at a point of his life where the dark side has almost completely taken over, but there are still hints of his kinder side, with him rushing in the rubble to save his employees, or providing money to the guy who lost his legs or saving Harley and giving her CPR.
Sadly, we never got to see a full movie of him

Honestly this is why I don't like considering tie in comics canon in any major TV/Movie franchise that does it. They always feel inconsistent and out of place with the rest of the franchise. And you just know that any future TV/Movie project will just ignore the events of them anyway. They just cause too many problems and I feel it's best to consider them an alternate timeline of the show they are based on.
Especially since the creators of the DCAU themselves have clearly and repeatedly expressed that the tie-in comics aren’t canon 🤭

It's more "If it can work, go with it" for me, but I see what you sayin. It would be nice of the animations would play nicer with the comics. I keep hoping for another BTAS season that uses dcau comic stories.
The Young Justice and Gravity Falls comics are a huge exception. They have involvement fro those show's creators and they, unlike Dini, Timm, or Burnett, take continuity more seriously.
Oh boy then you better add VideoGame comics to that too. Cuz wooh boy do the Injustice Comics and MKX comics feel really inconsistent when compared to the games they were adapted from.
The main order of St. Dumas is based in Switzerland in the comics. They have a splinter group based in a church in Gotham but that is associated with the other Azrael, Michael Lane.
Honestly anything made after 2006 when JLU ended I don’t really think too much about timeline wise. It’s obvious all of these DCAU callbacks like Batman and Harley Quinn and Fatal Five weren’t really intended to worry with when they were happening. Doesn’t make them bad or not canon but they are obviously not concerned with being part of a larger narrative

Batman really should have told Freeze long ago.
He did in the pre-Flashpoint DC Universe. She went insane, attempted to kill him and eventually got taken down.
I don't understand why the writers are so determined to keep Freeze miserable. For crying out loud not every tragic villain has to remain in tragedy for all time especially if they're like Freeze. It wouldn't hurt to give the poor guy a happy ending.

I dunno, this comic is more like a "what if dcau Batman met this DC character we never got to" kinda series. Not an attempt to continue anything, kinda like "Adventures in the DC Universe".
@@mattiesavannahpahl9934 Is it possible to ignore that "almost a year after Tim becomes Robin" line and say it's set after TAC? It's not a clean continuity any way you slice it, but I'd be willing to ignore a comment to fit everything into the greater narrative.
Another person suggested that Nora was dumped in the Lazarus pit. It's convoluted, but I guess that would solve the issue.

You have to love the irony: the DCAU improved Mr. Freeze...and then progressively ruined him. They should have just kept him in "Heart of Ice", rather than trying to expand his story.
No they should have made Subzero his last BTAS appearance and make a logical explanation to his batman beyond appearance ( which is a masterpiece)

@@thebunkerparodie6368 I think that Timm and Dini had a really screwed up way of writing Harley. They'd have episodes where she was incredibly sympathetic and had signs of being a good person who wanted to be better and having her reform after Harley's Holiday would have been a natural progression (having her be a mole for Batman to get info on the inmates she was close with might have been a good plotline); but instead we get her just as the Joker's henchwoman without any long-term betterment (in modern media with Harley Quinn we've seen her as a good guy or an anti-hero and usually it's with her detached from the Joker) and despite Batman showing her empathy, kindness, and understanding in Harley's Holiday and giving her a reality check in Mad Love, Harley STILL chose to help the Joker torture Robin. It made me hate the DCAU Harley retroactively because I watched Batman Beyond where any of her positive traits were overshadowed by her shitty actions.

So it's hard to leave a guy who didn't abuse you in the first years + apologizing makes her feel better
It's so realistic with the stories of abusing since a lot of women can't leave their abusers and the only reason Harley became an anti hero is because she is a woman and femenists would cringe DC like what they did with the killing joke " even if the joker didn't rape babs and he just shot her"

Nora is a better and more interesting character alive so keep her alive. Keep the door open for more Nora/Victor stories while respecting cannon
how do we know that corpse is even Nora body to begin with Think about it when mr. freeze returned in cold comfort and went on his spiteful rampage. fearing mr. freeze would come after them, Nora Fries new husband gets in contact with the feds and get put under witness protection. To ensure mr. freeze doesn't come looking for Nora the feds bury a corpse of a recently deceased Jane do (now under the name Nora Fries) in the Gotham Cemetery, running story in the gotham news that nora had relapsed and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her.

I can scan it with an app on my smartphone or use the scanner from the printer, you can tell me which option you prefer to make it easier for you to use the images
Some people interpret the TDKR scene as Batman shooting right next to the goon to shock him into freezing and slumping down, given how much the book reiterates that Batman doesn't use guns (literally calling them the weapons of cowards), and also that the book deals with him almost going over the edge, while BvS doesn't address it at all.

And in the animated movie, it’s interpreted as Batman shooting the gun out of the thug’s hand.
Seeing as there’s a blood splatter behind the mutant, THERES no doubting he shot them. The only ambiguity is whether he killed or not in that scene.
As for BvS, literally Batman’s entire character arc in that movie is about him going over the edge. I recommend a re-watch.
He shooted the mutant chick in the shoulder.If he had shooted her in the head then why there is no entry wound in her forehead? Not to mention that only a couple of pages later when Yindel is listing the charges she doesn't mention MURDER among them.Pretty sure that would be a big one.

This is written by Paul Dini the guy who wrote most of the dcau. Pretty much every comic tie in is considered non-canon unless it’s written by him or Dwayne McDuffie.
So, this comic has no connection to any other comic tie-in and could be considered truly canon.

In DKR batman doesn’t kill the Mutant but he does shoot him in the shoulder.
It’s clearly stated that batman doesn’t kill in this from his rubber bullets to him snapping a gun over his leg staring it’s the weapon of cowards.
Not to mention joker’s death is seen as his first kill in this.
If u google it says clearly he does shoot him but not kill him.
They even go out the way in the animated movie which is a direct adaptation to have him shoot that guy in the hand.

When you said the the clown head looks like krusty the clown I honestly thought that you were making a reference to lego dimensions, which both krusty the clown and joker star in, plus there were some dcau music in the dc hub world in that game.

I actually listened to Shirley Walkers soundtrack while I was reading the script to '' The One and Only Gun Story'' so reading the comics while listening to BTAS soundtrack probably helps the experience with those as well.

I always just assumed the DCAU Comics were their own separate continuity, with an occasional crossover or adaptation in the DCAU Proper.
Curious but, are you guys gonna cover that crossover comic between Batman TAS and TMNT 2012?

The “shadow of the bats”? Heck they were doing this *before* Phantom Menace.
I could cite two examples: The crossover “Batman vs The Incredible Hulk” when Bruce shakes hands with Bruce, and a chapter from “The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told” when the Phantom Stranger brings Bats to an alternative Earth where he gets to save that Earth’s Thomas and Martha from their Joe Chill and his appearance inspires that young Bruce.
I’m actually kinda looking forward to seeing whether they undo the Joker death (and Tim Drake forced to stop being Robin as part of his recuperation) from Return of the Joker. (Exploding heads anyone?)

Conspiracy theory: what if all of this takes place outside of the main DCAU timeline, and is canon for the Justice Lords timeline? With the weird multiverse ideas they have for this series, it could work. Plus, it would not rupture the main DCAU timeline. That way it's on a parallel earth, so events may transpire similarly, but they don't have to 100% mirror the mainstream continuity.
Just trying to think of something so you guys don't go insane with continuity errors. Love your work.

Thanks for the video guys. On the subject of the timeline, I knew something like this was going to happen eventually. To me this comic series is just reaffirming the attitude Bruce Timm and the others have about the tie-in comics to these shows. I think he said in his Modern Master's book that he doesn't consider those tie-in comics canon anyway. The only ones I would ever make an exception for are the ones that have the big people behind the DCAU shows like Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett
Heck this isn't even the first time the blatant disregarding of comic tie-ins happened before. STAS completely ignored his appearance in Batman Adventures and the entirety of the Superman Batman Magazine. The Justice League cartoon completely jettisoned the Adventures in the DC Universe comic series, and I've even heard that the writers of the Justice League Adventures comic book series weren't told of the events of Starcrossed causing some problems with issues not lining up with the show. Blatantly ignoring and removing tie-in issues from DCAU continuity is nothing new.
Heck, even the animated shows weren't immune to this either, although not to quite the same extent as the tie-in comics. Case in point would be Static Shock which at first treated Superman like a fictional character; but by the time of the second season, this aspect was completely dropped with the line that referred to Superman as a fictional character being removed in later airings. If even the shows can be retconned like this and can have aspects that the creators ignored because it interferes with the stories they want to tell, what chance do the tie-in comics have?
While I do very much appreciate your thoroughness when it comes to researching the DCAU, it's times like this I wonder if you're going too deep and just causing yourselves more stress than necessary. Maybe when you guys are making timeline videos, you guys should no longer include the older tie-in material. The current tie-in are being made by people who really don't care about the previous tie-in material. If you do manage to find issues from the older tie-in material that can fit, it's more of a happy accident than anything else. However, just because something can fit, doesn't mean it will taken into account by the people who are involved with the newer tie-ins.
I think the approach to take with the older tie-in material would be to remember that the people behind these shows aren't bound and beholden to tie-in material nor should they be. It's better to acknowledged that these older comics won't be considered canon and to just to enjoy the tie-in for what stories that were told back then, to have fun with any quirks and curiosities that arise from them like seeing characters who never made it into the animated shows like Black Mask and General Zod, or characters who were never appeared ever again when the DCAU shows were revamped into the new animation style like Man Bat, Maxie Zeus, and Red Claw.
These current tie-ins will be “the old tie-ins” someday. It’s all relative. We’ll keep truckin’!

Oh also the scene where batman freezes mr freezes head reminds me of the DCAU game batman vengeance where batman does basically the same thing in a cutscene

paul dinis writing is the heart of the dcau, he’s pretty much the reason it was so good. of course over the years tons of disposable media got tacked on the continuity. are we really going to fault the guy for not keeping every single work he had no involvement with in mind? It looks to me like he wants to set things right and make the continuity what him and timm originally wanted it to be. We have to now choose which comic is canon? well, easy. i’m going with dinis vision.
