- Following in the footsteps of it's father, Batman The Animated Series---- The Batman was a 2004 animated series that gave it's own original take on the mythos.
The show's stellar first season brought audiences it's own unique versions of classic rogues such as The Joker , Clayface , The Penguin , Mr. Freeze , Catwoman , Firefly , Cluemaster , Bane , Man-Bat , The Ventriloquist and Scarface .
It also gave us incredible iterations of The Dark Knight , Alfred , and the GCPD department.

This was the batman i grew up on and will always hold a special place in my heart. This version of clayface is the best version of clayface ever
Same this was my intro to batman and ive loved it ever since. ❤ rewatching it recently, its still good
Great choice!
In case someone was confused, there were indeed 2 Clayfaces in that show, Basil Karlo & Ethan Bennett (they even clashed in the epic episode _"Clayfaces"_ ).
I assume that OP's favorite is Bennett since he's the most prevalent in the show, but since I know many people (myself included ^^') who can't help but fall in love with the most random/obscure charas; I wouldn't even be surprised if Matsuda's Basil Karlo was someone's favorite iteration of "The Batman" Clayface.
... the issue with my favorite Clayface episode from "The Batman" is that it's an episode with a twist, so naming it would spoil the surprise... like, to make a comparison with a show that everyone has watched, it would be like saying that my favorite *Batman:TAS* Harvey Dent episode is _"Judgement Day"_ ^^'
I had this one airing live and the first two seasons of the animated series on dvd box combo 🔥🔥🔥
yes this batman show also does to me
& this batman show was more super 90's batman cartoon
& was from a while ago & is really nostalgic to me from these past years
& this batman show 1st premiered during 3rd anniversary of "attacks of september 11"
@@jackieec yes you can watch this on max
This is honestly my favorite Batman show. His character arc throughout the 5 seasons is so well made.
This show sucked.
Mine, too. The Batman for 2000s kids. Honestly, I prefer a lot of this shows characters and designs more than the original DCAUs
@@Kynreevez
There are things from this show, that I really dig, while some are just lazily done.
TAS wasn’t originally made for kids in mind. They were seriously trying to get an adult audience, or at least an older one, and I watched it throughout my teen years, and knew many adults who did as well.
It was on prime time television when it first came on, which was unheard of at the time.
Though The Batman has some dark themes and storylines, but it’s still made for kids, and they had a goal to sell toys.
That’s why season 1 had 26 episodes, which was cut to 13 in the next three. The only reason they didn’t cancel it, is because the final season is just all trying to setup a new Justice League show, or they were forced to add them, and it’s the lowlight of the show.
@@Flyboy1953huh?
@@CorbCorbin That's interesting. How does the movie factor in?
The theme song from Season 1 is just perfection and unskipable to me.
At one point, I was watching an episode while my wife was home. When the theme started playing, she actually asked if my phone was ringing before noticing it was on TV. Unfortunately, no one else ever noticed what it was. I've since switched to the Batman Beyond theme.
Technically, that theme is also used for season 2.
It's not till season 3 starts, when Batgirl comes in, that the opening changes.
Though I like the other one better.
This Batman is one of my favorites.
This Batman is not as grumpy as other versions, and is willing to work with other heroes. Plus he’s not afraid to make a witty remark.
We see him grow as a character through the series.
Plus I like that his Villain are able to go toe to toe against the Batman in a fight.
The episode when Joker gases Bats, then puts on a suit, snd acts like he’s going to be Batman from then on, was hilarious and had a creepy malicious thing to it, that was great.
Most don’t like this Joker, because he’s so much more physical. Yet, in some episodes, Batman knocks him out very easily, while in others they’re going back and forth, alas Joker is as much an acrobat as Dick Grayson.
That's what I like about 2004 Batman. When he said to Joker "I don't share your sense of humor", he doesn't means he's lacking it, this Batman just prefer throwing dry-wit humor every now and again. He can a bit of sass himself.
And 2004 Joker prolly my favorite non-standard, out-of-the-box character design that otherwise still true to its what it represent. Dreads that looks like Jester Cap? Creative! Straitjacket drip? Why anyone never thought of that before?
Same
yes I loved watching this old batman show really damn freakin' much
& this batman show 1st premiered during 3rd anniversary of "attacks of september 11"
I love that Joker and Penguin could go toe to toe with the Bat in the series.
Such a great series
Penguin was a lot of fun in this show. He was like the prototype version of the Ice King before Adventure Time was an even a thing. He’s even voiced by Tom Kenny using the same voice he would later use on Ice King.
I appreciate how the series is willing to use lesser known Batman villains. Of course, they eventually transitioned to using the better known bad guys, and even from episode one they were already using the Joker, but I would’ve never expected to see characters like clue, having a stand out episode to himself in a series that barely uses Bane
Honestly, I liked villains like Ragdoll simply because of how unnerving his movements often were.
I love that even though they had the Joker, it was a completely unique take on the character from his visual design, to his voice, to his fighting style and gags.
Plus, they actually made the Riddler a threat and cool looking
There was a reason for that. At the time this show was made WB wasn’t allowed to use characters from the Nolan movies (except Joker) or Wonder Woman because of copyright stuff.
@@scalycoronet5198 The Riddler has always been a threat beyond the Silver Age, and Marilyn Manson does not look cool.
I sometimes don't know why they put Cluemaster be in the show when the character literally only had one episode.
I mean, they give him a cameo appearance in a later season, but that's it.
It kinda makes me think of a season 1 episode of Lion Guard, The Imaginary Okapi.
And that episode is the only one that the character is seen in. I don't think he's even seen in the background anywhere.
So considering that, if you ask me, don't bother bringing a character into play, if you're only gonna use them once.
I have to agree that this show is semi-forgotten and vastly underrated. The animation was on point and the majority of the writing was also right on target.
"Oh there he is Batman"
This was my Batman show growing up. Definitely have my fondness for the show.
I think the fact that they made these different lesser characters in his rogue gallery a cool thing and makes it more interesting
8:32 I think the fingerless gloves is my favorite part of his design, it's a subtle hint at how little he cares about being thrown behind bars
Come to think of it The Batman is indeed the 2nd best Batman show. Particularly the art style and neat creativity. I usually return to the first season the most because of its vibes and how Batman is not trusted by the GCPD. In later seasons the season 1 vibes are gone and I kinda felt like the show lost something when it introduced the sidekicks and the Justice League
There’s a new Conroy voiced show, we’ll get one season of, in the next year.
That and the Suicide Squad game are his last.
I really hope it’s something different.
@@CorbCorbinunfortunately it was confirmed by Bruce Timm that Kevin Conroy didn't record for that show before his passing.
yes this was darker & more modern than 90's batman show & I loved watching this
& this batman show 1st premiered during 3rd anniversary of "attacks of september 11"
Loved the continual progression of this series. From bats on his own, tackling his foes, to forming his bat-family, to tackling aliens, meeting supes & ultimately the justice league.
I love The Batman 2004. The way I saw this show was more of a what if, and that what if was, what if the 'Batman 66 series was done in a more serious manner. The two have lots of similarities. The use of fantastic gadgets, the use of the Bat-Poles and having a stair case for Alfred to enter the Bat Cave, the fact that the villain's can all keep up with Batman in a fight, or at least hold their own to various degrees. The Batman 2004's Penguin has a speech very similar to Burgess Meredith's Penguin from the '66 series, even down to Batman's Cowl design in the fact that 66 Batman and 04 The Batman both have the short ear cowl that I personally like more. This was how I always saw the series and it helped make the enjoyment of the series even that much stronger for me. Plus personally I think this is the best Batman design simply because he looked like a demon. His cape always covered his body and the way he was animated moving around with said cape covering his whole body looked other worldly. Also the cape's frayed edges always spread across the ground instead of ending at his ankles like the BTAS designs of Batman. It just makes Batman seem more supernatural and just worked. A fantastic show that deserves more love.
This was such an awesome show. At first, i was a little iffy about the animation, but after only a few minutes, I was sold. I really liked it. His musculature and the fluidity of his movements were awesome. I liked his cowl, and his car was amazing. I totally agree with your take on his cape. I loved that it went all the way down and draped over him. Also, this might be a hot take, but i disagree with Vee here. I liked Bane 's look. And his voice. I really dug his design. Transforming into a hulking monster really displayed just how dangerous he was to Batman.
I miss this show, and i really wish that the next Batman animated series, would take notes from this show.
The batman is such an underappreciated gem. It's great show! The Movie is also one of my favorites!
This was my first Batman I would constantly rewatch the second season
So call me surprise when years later. I discovered that my first batman fought dracula
Like i always say the animation quality for this weekly show was beyond insanity, thats why i can always go back to it and why i love it so much : D
This show was MY animated Batman show growing up. I did get to see some episodes of Batman: TAS, but night after night was spent watching the first two seasons of The Batman, especially the final episodes of Season 2.
I love how Batman had to grow as a hero, rather than starting off as an already flawless protagonist. It also made me fans of both Firefly and Ragdoll, and it gave me my favorite interpretation of Batgirl.
I always felt this show's clayface was a very interesting melding of concepts from other characters, Ethan felt like Gordon in his role as an officer of the law at first being unsure but slowly warming up to the vigilante Batman. He felt close to some takes on Harvey Dent, or other characters in the past, similarly depicted as a respected friend of Bruce. His origin story even felt reminiscent of both what Harvey and Gordon had gone through, torture at the hands of the Joker putting pressure on his psyche like Gordon but physically warped by harmful chemicals leading to his inner instability being damaged by his now altered outer appearance.
He of course is not either of these characters reskinned, and there could even be more traits identified about him that make him feel reminiscent of other characters.
But I genuinely feel that Ethan is such a strong welcome and fondly remembered part of the show thanks to how much it felt like the writers making him knew what to hone in on to make a character stand out while feeling like they fit into the mythos perfectly. On one hand I'm sad I don't ever really see this character more outside of his appearance in this show. But on the other he works so perfectly for this, and while he is Clayface I never felt an absence of the same spirit behind Two-Face thanks to his story. Again, not the same and we did of course get a more traditional but distinct take on Clayface later, but he certainly felt like he scratched a very similar itch when watching his story unfold.
I have a special place in my heart for this show because it aired from when I was 9 to 13, my prime childhood years. Batman vs. Dracula is especially underrated. The animated series was a little before my time and I saw it only in reruns. I remember liking the first three seasons of the show, but the series became lighter and less serious when Robin showed up in season 4, something I didn’t care for. I do like the fact that the show made good use of Hugo Strange, an underrated character.
Not really underrated, more misused. Strange was, imo, a very weak aspect of Gotham, for example.
This was my favourite batman show back in the day. I just brought a DVD box set of it this Christmas and rewatched the first season for the first time in years, feels ironic to see you cover it not even a week later. It's an amazing show, I would love to see you go over the other seasons too.
Would this show be the equivalent of Spectacular Spiderman ? Idk why the comparison kinda fits. Just like BTAS can be directly put beside 90s Spiderman.
I’m glad people objectively consider this a good show
yes
I really damn loved watching this batman show from a while ago

I have this batman show on dvd
& you can also watch this on max which is currently showing on like how I do
really nostalgic
& I really love how these characters & concepts of this batman show were semi realistically & modernly designed & so was gotham city of this
This was the Batman I grew up with and the one that made me not only love the characters and its world, but shaped my perceptions so that I consider these characters the "true" iterations in my eyes. I like that this was a Batman who could be tricked, who could lose, who didn't always have the answer in his toolbelt. Instead, he'd get up, keep trying until he found something that worked. And than his enemies would themselves learn, creating an interesting dance where every episode was indeed something new, rather than just redoing the same thing
I actually saw this before the animated series I think you should definitely do more videos of The Batman
The intro says it all (till season 3) that how good it is
this is my second favorite version of batman plz do more
Please do check out the rest of it. This series is so underrated. Watching this though makes me realize I need a retrospective on Batman the brave and the bold from u too.
Yes, that one is underrated, too.
_"Ah, there he is! BATMAN!"_
I too am in the camp of *loving* this show's iteration of the Joker (👏). It really is something of a _rarity_ to see the Clown Prince of Crime not only be a psychological threat to the Dark Knight, but a *physical* threat to him as well. Kevin Michael Richardson & company definitely went out of their way to _not_ imitate or touch Mark Hamill's Clown Prince of Crime, which _isn't_ a bad thing IMHO.
I really liked that show, it was probably my second favourite right behind the brave and the bold
Definitely need a second video discussing this show❤
“Ah there he is Batman”. This was the show I grew up with and even though I know the animated series is better, I still love this show!
I gre up watching The animated show as new episodes were released. The Batman was so good. My son watched this and had the toys. Even the toys were fun to play with. Loved the art style of this show.
Ethan/Clayface
Is basically this shows "Twoface" counterpart
Best Friend of Bruce Wayne who goes through an Accident of some kind that Disfigured them in some way
This show had the best clay face of all time
Vee Infuso forgot to mention how The Batman 2004 not only uses and prioritises on Action, it also Prioritises on Batman's detective Skills.
Each Episode is a Mystery episode showing Batman trying to figure something out. Even showing Batman fight a Dude with Time-Based ability
I'm a simple man. I see a TH-camr talking about The Batman. I like.
I understand the impact The Animated Series made to a lot of people, but this was my Batman show growing up. And I'm glad it's been getting its well deserved appreciation lately.
"The kind of character you'd expect to see on Ben 10...not that I've ever SEEN that show-"
Oooh Vee you'd enjoy it I'm sure, it has a lot of great energy and designs that...y'know what DO kinda resemble this take on Batman...
I can't believe he hasn't seen it
This series was my childhood I remember watching a clip from the episode rumors as a kid and 2004 joker is my 2nd favorite joker
Who is your first favorite version of The Joker?
@@Rorschach97well obiously joker from the 1992 animated serie
Very underrated 👍
Underrated is an understatement. I grew up with all the Batman shows & movies, so I was lucky for that.. and I’ll never forget how excited I’d get when The Batman would pop up on Boomerang late at night, with Samurai Jack too.
Good times 😌
Firefly looks literally nothing like he did in the DCAU. His personality and overall presence is entirely different. Alfred looking similar to Alfred from the DCAU isn't really quite true because both are just supposed to be Alfred from the comics. Man-Bat doesn't look similar almost at all aside from the general design which is just comic book Man-Bat. As for Batman it's not that the character design was based on the BTAS design, rather that both the BTAS design and The Batman design are based on the design by Neil Adams and Dennis O'Neil.
I personally very appreciate that Bruce here throughout all the 5 seasons is quite warm compared to his other interpretations. Like he smiles in this series quite a lot as Bruce Wayne AND Batman, and this is a very warm smile that we see, I noticed it especially when Dick got into picture in season 4. And Alfred seems to have much more impact as well, especially with the references to his co-parenting Bruce with Lucius Fox. If we ignore the Artefacts episode I would say this Bruce Wayne could lead and leads a really happy life in and outside the costume, and I appreciate that we have this version😊
Love ❤️ the Joker in The Batman animated series
This is my favourite series of the batman as we got the coolest villain designs. And you get the justice league well done. I still watch this. Just finished 2x3 were freeze and firefly work together. Also the themes were my favourite besides the classic animated series.
Gotta give this show some props for trying to be its own thing and still managed to hold up.
So cool that you got the cameo from Conroy but always makes me a bit sad to see his face :*( Crazy to think he recorded that while in his final stages of cancer , but could still do that perfect Batman voice to delight all his fans. Great video!
Just finished the first season a few days ago. One thing I really appreciate about this show is how it still has some horror bits essential to Batman stories. From when Batman finds the Joker's first victim, Manbat's body horror transformation, or when Batman chases Mr. Freeze. Though I think the best is when Ethan sees his face turn in the mirror, it's genuinely creepy.
I love the show sm and its version of Clayface is sick
Loved this show growing up and upon a recent re watch, still love this show! The drastically different takes on The Joker, Clayface, Firefly etc is a warm welcome on a new take! Wish we received Scarecrow (beyond that art) and Mad Hatter! Loved that we got smaller villains like Cluemaster, Black Mask, Ragdoll, Spellbinder etc
& I loved how these characters of this batman show were redesigned & changed to being modern & realistic
including themes & concepts of this show
nice!
This was without a doubt a unique Batman animated show. Jeff Matsuda’s manga artwork and crazy designs.
I have the whole series in my phone and watch it very often! It was an interesting take and I loved the style and aesthetic with the electric guitar transition themes etc
Definitely an underrated interpretation of the character, loved this show as a kid and still do. Season 4 was the peak of the show for me. Such an incredible season.
Oh yes i remember this show!!
Back in my time we used to call this"The Millennial Batman".
yes I loved watching this batman show really damn freakin' much
& this batman show 1st premiered during 3rd anniversary of "attacks of september 11"

great
The Batman is my favorite Batman show, I love literally everything about it, it was my first introduction to Batman, I had a Batman toy and a killer moth toy when I was a little kid, I love there joker, manbat, I think the Mr. Freeze is awesome, and don't even get me started on Batman vs Dracula, literally perfect.
There he is Batman.
Enjoyed this show, should give it a rewatch.
I grew up with this show ,batman the animated series and batman beyond!!!!
YAY! I'm so happy that this show is getting more love. I absolutely love this show since I grew up with it. Funny fact, I was so used to this rendition of the Joker that whenever I'd see the original styles of the Joker, I was confused 😂
I’d love to see you do the rest of the series !
I love this show and how different it was it gave me one of my favorite Jokers.
I hope you continue reviewing the Batman
I used to stay up in the summer to catch this show at 11:30 on Boomerang. It's my Batman series and always will be.
The show was definitely focusing more on action and on Batman's use of gadgets and his general fighting skills to resolve the conflict. Therefore it was necessary for all the villains (even those typically not action orientated) to be able to hold their own in a fight with the Caped Crusader. So I consider the more acrobatic Joker and Penguin to be perfectly fine, for this show.
They do later add some villains with less of a physical presence in Hugo Strange (and to a degree the Riddler) to allow for more psychological duels.
Honestly always loved this show. So pleased to see it getting more and more love.
The Batman is my second favorite Batman show after Batman The Animated Series, very underrated series, I like that it takes place in Batman's early years.
A visual detail I always found neat was the Scarface puppet. TAS Batman had the original 30s mobster flick look and The Batman’s one had the more recent 80s aesthetic with Pacino in it.
This was my Batman, I watched both BTAS and The Batman on tv back and forth, but The Batman played alot more
This was MY Batman show growing up. I watched it on Netflix all the time and it increased my interest into Batman
Holy im early. Love your channel!
It's because of this show I got to know about cluemaster
The father of Stephanie Brown?
@@CalvinNoire yep
I really love this version of Batman and really love this version joker to
I remembers watching the first season when I was younger, but because I was a british middle class child, I never got to see the later season because the BBC lost the licence to air Warner Bro shows. Which lead to the BBC going through its backlogs and bring out a bunch of old shows from the 60s like Batfink.
I’ve watched and I do own all the seasons. I enjoy this interpretation and think you should continue with the series. When batgirl is introduced it’s pretty fun as her and Ivy start out as friends. When we finally get Gordon, it’s a nice surprise when it happens. And you get plenty of fun voice “cameos” as it goes on especially when we meet Dicks parents.
I’d love to see some videos of you discussing the rest of the serious. Producing different stories from what we normally have seen or know is what I definitely appreciate about the show overall.
Thanks for the hard work 🤘🏽
Love to see you do more from this series! It was a reaiiy awsome show and will always rember it!
The Joker looks like Lobo.
This was the BEST show Kids' Wb had left after Xme, Jackie Chan, Static, and Pokemon was gone 😢😔
My head canon for Joker's feet antics is that he has spend so much time in a straight jacket that he learned to use his feet as second pair of hands.
I would love to see you cover future seasons!
These are my favourite Batman character designs
I think Bane looked really cool, before using the venom lol the all black mercenary look was badass, but then the red monster after using venom ruined it for me
Character growth, story, design= best.
This show is thr reason Black Mask wound up being one of my favourite Batman baddies. Loved how they used him
I haven’t watched all your videos in the past few months, but it’s cool to see you’ve had several big ones recently.
I remember not long ago, you were wondering about how you were going to continue the channel.
One of my favorite Batman shows as well. Hope to see reviews of the other four seasons.
Although it isn’t my idealized version of Joker, I absolutely love this take on the clown’s look. He looks absolutely deranged, and bulky enough that he could feasibly be a physical threat to Batman. But he still has that classic joker charm, seeing as he hasn’t ditched the suit. And the cherry on top is that his hair kind of resembles a jester hat.
Edit; I also can’t help but feel like the fingerless gloves and shoes. Help tell more about his character. First off of course he wouldn’t care about the risk of getting scratched and scraped while he’s doing his escapades. The guy is self-destructive in the most chaotic way. And secondly, I can’t help but feel, but joker would wipe his fingerprints all over a crime scene just a rub it in Batman‘s face that he’ll never figure out who he was before getting his skin bleached
I watched the Batman and Dracula movie so much when I was younger.
This will always be my definitive Batman.
This was my introduction to batman as a child
This show is goated and this show has the best version of the Joker outside of Mark
The BATMAN 2004 was the Batman I grew up on, and it is GOOD. As a kid this show rocked, got me into the Batman Gothamverse in a way I never have with any other comics. I love the early 2000s animation, and most if not all the characters are done well. Trust me, the Joker is great here but not what you're used to get over it.
To me, this series featured the best Batmobile.....ever. It even had a storyline of its own when it got wrecked and was replaced with an even better Batmobile in season 3....
I ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!! Season 2 had the perfect Riddler and Hugo Strange.
Great video! This show is definitely underrated
This is my favorite Batman show. Bruce Wayne in this show felt more genuine than in other adaptations. They always say that Bruce Wayne is just a mask and Batman is who he really is, but this show makes it feel like he is also Bruce.
0:51 In regards to Scarecrow he was initially meant to feature in one of the episodes of Season 4, but the Bat-embargo being a thing he was replaced with Hugo Strange. There's concept art at the very least, but it's a bummer he never got to be in the show.
Scarecrow and Two-Face didn't appear because of DC's weird standards and desires to not share too many characters between continuities, or something like that. As such, Scarecrow and Two-Face were busy over in the Dark Knight Trilogy.
I saw this after seeing BTAS and loved it. The DCAU remains my favorite DC universe but this show is definitely amazing. It wasn't scared to try new things.
Next to original and brave and the bold, one of my personal favorite, would love to see you do this series and the movie where he met Dracula
Loved this show as a kid. Everyone only ever talks about TAS, it felt like my childhood was invalid often cuz I grew up with this instead of the 90s stuff
please make a video covering the whole series cuz theres alot to cover nd alot happens, i grew up watching this show nd while i was a kid watching this it was my definetive version of the dark knight, so for me its one of my favourites
0:46 That’s Cluemaster?! I’m guessing Stephanie Brown doesn’t exist in this universe then…
I loved the bane episode. Banes beats up Batman badly, breaking most of Batman’s bones. He doesn’t let it deters his mission and builds a suit to fight him, even in a broken state. Showing Batman’s willpower and determination.
