- Welcome to the 11th progress diary, where we cover the new features in Alpha 3 including the famed Coriolis starport where you can outfit your ship or purchase a brand new Cobra Mk III!
Starport features include:
• Outfit your ship with new modules such as heat sinks, cargo scanners and a variety of weapons
• Upgrade your weapons and repair any damage using the credits you have earned from the locations
• Clear bounties earned when committing crimes
The consequences of combat now also have a price. With repairs being cheaper than buying a new ship players will need to make split second decisions on when to pull back from battle.
Players can join the Alpha now by visiting the Elite: Dangerous store: elite.frontier.co.uk - เกม
It really is like FD looked into my head and took what I consider to be the perfect game and then made it.
Well...if they ever figure out how to add in planetary landing as well :D
We intend to continue expanding the game both with new content and new features. A good example of this is planetary landings. We have an ambitious goal for landings to include new gameplay and a rich variety of worlds to explore.
You guys are awesome!
I was watching Scott Manley's interview with David Braben earlier and Scott recomended that David check out Space Engine.
I'd like to second that recomendation, not only is it vast, but it has beautiful procedural planets too.
en.spaceengine.org/
maybe you can collaborate or do some kind of deal.
FrontierDevelopments The best people for the job, I have full confidence in what you've got planned ahead. These alphas have and continue to be great fun, I'm excited and curious to see more of the procedural galaxy when it comes.
I can't wait to play this. Every iteration just looks better and better. The ambient sound is some of the best I've EVER heard. Kudos to David and his dev team.
"My God, it's full of win!"
Truly beautiful. If only the architects of society had as much vision and skill as is on display here...absolutely stunning.
The docking aspect is excellent. It really adds so much to the experience of feeling one is in a living a and breathing universe.
Simply brilliant! I have been a long time fan of this universe. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game. My only regret is that my dad isn't around to share the experience with me. He was the one that got me into Elite back in the beginning. Thanks for revisiting this game.
Man, wasn't expecting the game to be looking that good. That docking station looked amazing.
I absolutely love the sounds!
Looks great! I can't believe how far you have come in such a short time.
Could not be happier. E:D is looking great! That space station is absolutely gorgeous.
My Kickstarter pledge went on this?! This truly looks astounding and I can't wait to play it! 2:02 reminds somewhat of Arthur C. Clarke's Rendevous With Rama novel - is that pure coincidence or was someone inspired?
Thankfully you don't need to park the ship leaning against one of 3 airlocks stuck off centre on the outside of the station :p
That's a docking manoeuvre I would hate to pilot.
That is quite simply awesome. Well done Frontier and the backers who made it possible
Every iteration seems to be capable of taking my breath away. I sincerely can't believe how amazing this game is looking. In every way it's proving to be (for me) the absolute Holy Grail, fulfilling every desire! I'm eager to play it, but am happy to just sit back and follow the development for a while. I'm pretty sure that the dev team are on course to release possibly the most acclaimed piece of gaming history and I'm sure I'm going to lose whole weeks/months (years?) of my life to it.
Thanks so much for your support!
David must feel so proud to see his child now grown up and realising it's full potential.
I remember seeing the original elite Cobra MKII spinning in wire frame on my girlfriends dads BBC Micro way back when and thinking Wow! and then rushing out and buying the system and the game. I also remember many a night of no sleep.
I'm looking forward to the reunion.
I wish I could afford the alpha/beta stage, it truly looks amazing.
So far this game has made me buy my first ever Hotas and TrackIR5.
Reliving my childhood with Elite Dangerous :)
Wow, this is really looking and sounding amazing! Fantastic job Frontier, keep it up! I hope I can get me one of those upper tier condos!
Looks fantastic. Great video. I wish you and your team the very best of luck. This is looking more promising than Star Citizen so far. I'm loving the audio of the game too! Sound is so important and it really feels like you guys take sound seriously. The spaceships sound other worldly as they should. The sense of speed is very realistic too. I am very tempted to get behind this:). Regards
Even though its still in Alpha, I can confirm it has that feeling you had in the old games. You want to do just one more run to get enough cash to get that one upgrade you really, really want. I'm really enjoying being part of the Alpha process despite the bugs. They are fixed quickly and you can feel the the whole project gather momentum with each new fix and release. If the folks at frontier can keep this up they've got a winner here. Right I'll go switch Fanboy mode off now ;-)
Still can't believe Elite is finally being made.. !
Man, my Ross 154 -> Barnards Star trade runs are going to make me literally cry! Awesome!
Well... it was. ;)
+1
Truly impressive. The old master is back, with an army of talented staff. Well done Braben & team!
Every update has exceeded my expectation... Thinking very hard about ordering oculus dev kit 2.... VR has come at such a good time for Elite! And vice versa!
I just love the science in elite!
I'm glad to have backed this awesome game! :D
Thank you David Braben for making this happen!
And thanks to all that is working on it!
Sound was something that got my attention right away. It is awesome!
That is jaw-droppingly gorgeous - I can't wait to try this with a VR headset :D
Looks fantastic...can't wait to try it out this weekend!
Beautiful, beautiful, I haven't been this excited about a cockpit since the original Steel Battalion.
I love that you hve went in depth into the physics and science of this Sci fi game ! Looks fantastic and will try to get in on the alpha on pay day im so excited for its release
This looking absolutely amazing.
I love the thought that has gone into the design of the station, Shows the quality of the game we can expect!
very exited to get my grubby mits on it.
It's really taking shape nicely.
It does look stunning!
Okay brings me back to the earliest version where only vector graphics painted the scene - looking forward to play it :-)
great stuff as usual Frontier well done, its gonna be great in the expansion sometime to un-weld oneself from that seat and go and explore ;) you need a ship utility point attachment whereby you can suction attach to larger objects asteroids big craft space stations etc and lay low etc, cant wait for ship to ship transfers, crews in the expansions ;) would be nice if there were a few loose cockpit objects or tethered objects that could float around inside the cockpit, and when you killed people these objects might spin past in the debris field, also I noted on the alpha that when you hit a craft in motion you get an explosion on the surface but it would be nice for the vapour trail that fades off to show extra smoke along its length that diffuses where hits on the target had occurred. I think its that object within and on object movement whilst the first object is in motion that will really forward the genre - ie first person moving around inside a ship whilst the ship is in motion or a moving around in a spacestation that is orbiting a planet and you can see accurate multiplayer combat out of the windows of the spacestation, this kind of stuff will really add to the game.
Looks amazing
all these videos make me really happy i backed you :D i hope the final product will be as good as the videos
I bet this was exciting to watch two years ago. Done it enough now to finally get the hang of it. Looks great in VR too.
Really awesome looking. Now watching this I had an idea. Wouldn't it be funny if you could play the original Elite on your ship's computer?
If you look to your left in the cockpit, you see a BBC Model B keyboard complete with red function keys...
It looks absolutely amazing! Such fun to finally see another Elite title in the making.
+1
This is the most promising game I've seen in ages. For me, what I imagine to be perfect space game would include a bit of everything from Elite, Wing commander, Eve online, X3 reunion so: -landing on stations, planets, huge galaxy map, trading, space fight, control of ships of all sizes, controling my own fleet, setting patrols, guarding of my freighters, setting patrols, beeing abel to build smaller stations, meet alien races, I want to build my empire. Earn bunch of money trading, building fleet, showing aliens who's boss, bombing their home planet. :)
what can I say : truly a masterpiece and in a record time compared to 'others" :)
You have to understand that this game was in development way before anyone even knew about it. So you can't really judge the development time and compare it to "others" that started 2 years later.
***** Development on this game started in 2013
***** 2 million pounds from kikstarter and they manage this and just maybe 6 months advance than " the others" witch by the way have 40 millions $ and the DFm is not even "ON" . Last time they said will be available immediately after PAX, well PAX was a few weeks ago , ten what immediately means then ? 6 months , 8 , 12 , just we have to wait and see .I just hope that the Glacier age will not come until I play that game.
Its watching things like this which make me wish I went into games development.
Looks good... more! we need more!! :)
Потрясающе!
Phenomenal - Will be Gargantuan just like the Elite i played way back in 1984 on the Spectrum 48k.
One video a month isn't enough. I NEED my elite dangerous fix! More vids, more! More........ Please. Looks awesome so far :D
Amazing!
wow from 30 years ago, this is where we have come to. Amazing. This is significant as the original elite was the first 3d vector graphics space sim on computers, and a very successful one at that. Braben and Bell pioneered so much with that game. Congrats, I now feel very old :-)
+1
.. me - too !
Damn`d time.. It seems - that was only yesterday : when I`ve got `Elite` status in 1984.. Oh man, how so old I`m now.. but soon, with `Cobra MK III` - will be so yong again !
You got "Elite status"? Right on commander!! :-) looking forward to this, let's hope the scripting and gameplay keeps the game relevant to today's tastes.
Steve Ulrich Oh yeah ! Still remember that one - over a whole week I play .. sleep only 2-3 hour - and run to the PC again & again ! Long live - DB (David Braben) !
Fantastic.
It has been years and years since a game made my spine tingle in anticipation. Just seeing the video here caused that to happen...it's becoming increasingly difficult to calmly wait for the finished game!
Magnificent.
It is so beautiful...
I want this absolutely immediately!!
looks good
Awesome!!!
Wow, very impressive! And potentially this is a game that could be improved and added to almost indefinetely, ala Warcraft.. Can't wait to be able to buy the full product, great work!
+1
Freaking amazeballs.
Can't wait!!!
+1
Oh wow this game looks absolutely mint!!! I have ALWAYS loved my ELITE games.....cant wait till this comes out!!
+1
All of them - 3`` disc, two boxes (`Frontier` & `First Encounters` - full package, with books & posters) lay down on my table.. all the time - every morning I see them and wonder ..
;) fellow SiFi head.....RESPECT!!
Oh yes. Keep it coming. :)
This is looking amazing, I foresee some PC upgrades on the horizon.
I enjoyed very much. I miss a bit "Blue Danube" but still it is excellent display.
So many memories.... I miss "Blue Danube" a bit.
i get a fuzzy warm feeling of been 10 year old again when i see this as its what i imagined in my head playing elite on my amstrad cpc464 c well around 10 ish born in 71 forgot what exact year it was released
The graphics! Perfect and flight dynamics of the ship make it appear as though it actually has weight to it. What's it like with a VR headset?
Scot Manley gives a good indication on this video Elite: Dangerous - David Braben Interview thanks :)
Looks very good, keep up the great work. Its a shame im not part of the testing :-)
after watching some alpha 3.4 multiplayer vids on youtube you finally caught me.
I bought the premium beta access.
Sadly that 1.1 alpha version which is available hasnt TrackIR support and lacks alot of the tuning of those future alphas.
But... im looking forward for the 30.5.
Elite is going to be groundbreaking.. I know i'm an alpha backer!
What I have seen so far is jaw dropping and this is only 10% of the real game...
One thing I noticed is that all the stars in the sky seem to be white. It would be nice if some of them had a blueish and reddish tint. Because space is actually very colorful. Here's a picture shot by an ISS astronaut: www.oregonl5.org/images/bdipper1.jpg
Thanks for your feedback, this will be forwarded on!
The gravity on the outermost section of the station should be HIGHER than 1.0G. Ideally, it should be 1.3, max 1.5G. That way the main mass of the station, where the majority of the populace will be, remains at 1.0G for the comfort of the largest areas of the station. Judging by the size of the hangar, the platforms would be at 0.7 or 0.8 G's, where the outer rim is at 1.3.
I suggest going to the Frontier Elite Dangerous General forums, there is a thread you should join in on, called "Coriolis Station Physics".
interesting, I'll check it out.
tasev1 you can find it here - forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=13049 Thanks for the suggestion Matthew!
Recently ordered a TrackIR explicitly so I can use it for this game. :)
0:45 reminds me of how in Ancient Rome the ground floor was by far the most prestigious. :)
I'd like to be able to upgrade targeting systems on gimbaled weapons and missiles, and it would be great to have a second player in the copilot's seat take over targeting those kind of weapons!
Looking forward to 30th May!.
Man this keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to waste away my youth once again!
Damn and Blast; David Braben! I'm already waiting for the beta but you're tempting me more and more to spend £200 of well earned cash, to get a copy of the alpha. When it's released I think a week off work and an oculus will be a necessity.
This and Limit theory are my two most awaited space games, and yes my hype for star citizen is kinda low for some time now.
having followed star citizen and this game, i gotta say, this game actually gets me more excited. Sad i missed the kickstarter. Costs a fortune to get in atm :S
if i haven't backed SC already i would go for this one... daaaamn, it looks nice...
And you can't back both because...? ;)
tbh i find the pricing on Elite a bit steep (alpha/beta access) and it's much harder to get information about the game. And if both games deliver what they say i'm not sure i have the capabilities to play them both :)
***** you can get simple copy of the game for 35 gbp (~55 USD), and try it out during gamma period, which is planned to start during summer.
***** At least there's a game to actually play already ;)
Sorry, that was too easy ;p
Oops 5:18 ... I hope you have enough power adapters in stock on release day ... maybe the british ones would fit in the plug on the side of the seat but we really need a euro-adapter to charge our phones while crusing space :-).
It would be so so so so excellent if you could dock...then go into 1st person 'shooter' mode so that you can walk around the station to visit bars, trade centers, make contacts, like seen in 1st person run-around mmo's. Freelancer seemed like this but did not manage the 1st person movement. This would offer much more immersion; if you could dock your ship, leave it there, and go off to explore the station! (OR PLANET!!) I hope David is doing this or has it under his thinking cap :D
You'll be getting this in an expansion, walking around and Planetary landings are already planned, they just won't be there for initial release. As the whole viewing premise for ED is from the eyes of the pilot, you can be pretty sure of a 1st person perspective too.
It looks really nice and has a lot of potential. But I really hope just dogfighting and outfitting your ship in a station isn't the only part of this game. To be a space sim and live up to modern standards you must be able to land on planets, get out of your ship, explore space stations, interact with NPCs, and have nice cinematics and animations.
Lol of course it would just be dog fighting. Mining, trading, mission contracts, smuggling illegal things, piracy, exploring. Planetary landings (1 year from release) Good amount of stuff.
Please post your list of space sim games that currently look as amazing as this and also live up to your list of "modern standards".
"Nice cinematics and animations"???? Are you joking? That's the absolute LAST thing they should be looking at. It will be a total immersion breaker in a game like this, especially when using a VR helmet. No cut scenes of any type will be much better.
No cut scenes? Immersion breaker? Are you joking? I know a lot of cut scenes do hinder immerssion, but some will never hurt. It's what made Mass Effect amazing, Earth and Beyond, and it's what will make Star Citizen the best damn space sim ever. Imagine Mass Effect with no cut scenes, and yes I know it is not a space sim but still. AND to tell you the truth, there is no current space sims that look as great as this and as Star CItizen; this game just needs more exploration features and free roam mechanics and it will be EPIC.
***** Using Mass Effect makes your argument invalid
Ok fine, you guys win, but I still hope this game will have many more features.
*drools on keyboard* I cannot wait for this game to come out!!!
anyone knows if the stations will be explorable in a free-roam manner?
since they're adding avatars and on-foot exploration, i thought that'll be a natural thing to include. it's one thing to see a vastly detailed space station/environment, it's another to be able to walk around it and interact with it in free-roam.
Yes, but not in the first release. That will come in later expansions where you will not "only" be able to walk around in the stations and ships, but also on true to scale planets! ;)
It looks so good! I can't wait for the Premium beta to start! Any news on how many more alpha fases there are before it starts?
I have one other question though. Maybe it's just the video but the the stars don't really look.... sharp? It feels like their resolution isnt that high or something. Will they change to look better?
They said earlier that there was 2 major updates to come for the alpha :
-docking & outfitting(right up there)
-travel & trading.
They said it a bit like if there wont be any big ones after that. I guess it's possible that beta will follow but it's hard to tell right now, we'll all know more after alpha 4.
Nic0maK So one more alpha phase to go. Sounds good! That's like 2 or maybe 3 months until beta I'd assume. Can't wait to see how hyperspace travel will look like in the next update!
Lirka that would be my guess. I assume travel means hyperspace but also supercruise within systems, with potentially but not necessarily some maps.
It is nice to have these small personal space crafts for sure, but can you own and fly MASSIVE space stations and so called "generation ships"?
No one "flies" space stations and generation ships, as they usually manned by big number of people. But you still will have huge ships in game to fly.
Pēteris Krišjānis It would be nice to be able to hijack these stations etc, and crash fly them into star or planet. This needs to be possible!
I just hope that the atmosphere of this game will not be as cold and impersonal as space sims usually have been where we can experience or see actual human life (residences, plazas, malls etc.), not just metallic walls and boxes with texts.
Judging by the awesome maneuverability every smaller vessel in Elite seems to be capable of, I presume they have some form of inertia neutraliser, or even artificial gravity vectors that always simulate 1g and neutralise g-force effects.
Why they would still use this archaic method of rotating the entire station to simulate gravity is beyond me.
If you master faster-than-light-travel by basically leaving this dimension, you will have mastered the manipulation of gravity beforehand.
i want, i want!
Out of curiosity, anyone know if we will be able to customize the colors of the hud? I love the orange, but would be really cool to have a menacing red, or a bright blue or something.
I'm really thinking about to buy an oculus rift for Elite.
I am planning to do it sooner or later.
This game is the manifestation of my dreams.
Boy, such a pity there is no Alpha for the Mac... I simply can't wait until june!
June seems a bit optimistic for general release.
They said Beta would come out by march, and the Mac OS version would come 3 months later.
It's on the kickstarter page.
I know but it is already March 19th and they just released Alpha 3.0. Alpha 4.0 will be released in about 3 weeks or whenever they have a stable build with no bugs. Then the 2 Beta stages after that. My guess would be around August - September for final release.
...Just on ELITE's 30 year anniversary. Yes, this is a common fan-guessed date.
Well, at least I can dream... :P
Personally I don't mind waiting a little longer for a more polished gaming experience. I've waited 20 years, what's a few more months?
Looking forward to piloting an Anaconda :].
Did he say how many people could live in that station ? It looks fairly big.
I'm sorry but this looks AWESOME! I know I will lose my family to this game... no not game... experience!
Thanks so much for your support fairbaa!
How's fueling going to work? Planet skimming for water or hydrogen, or perhaps asteroid mining or will it be dirty little gas stations selling big sodas and jerky? Is fuel hazardous?
incredibu
Will their be boarding actions, i know probably not in the first build but maybe in a future expansion and if so will you be able to see the combat?
Yes, we will see walking and boarding actions in expansions.
when can i play the game, when will it come out to the masses?
it looks great.
Hi, there hasn't been a specific date announced for the commercial release yet, currently Alpha or Beta can be found here, thanks for your interest :) - store.zaonce.net/elite-dangerous-cat.html
I hope this will be IN the Game, and is not only Special rendered....
This IS all in game :)
FrontierDevelopments
Fantastic...BUT what Kind of Hardware .... Xenon CPU´s (2), 24 GB RAM, 2 GeForce 780 TI 5GB SLI ????
I only want to know which Kind of PC I need for that Wonderfull Game....
