- In this sixth dev diary David Braben provides commentary on development process for the recently released Capital Ship Battle video (if you haven't watched that video yet then you can do so here: • Capital Ship Battle Video ). Look out for the art diary video for the same video coming soon.
You can keep up with all the latest Elite: Dangerous news and events on our website: elite.frontier.co.uk - เกม
Thank you for developing this game mr braben, I have loved elite since I first played it on my Commodore 64. I've been playing elite ever since and it has to be said it's got to be my altimeter favourite game. Can't wait for this to hit the shelves.
I love the hyperdrive exit animation, where ships just sort of "BBBLAAMM-POOFF!" appear without warning with 0.3 seconds of deceleration. I love it i love it. I love that style, rather than the old sci-fi staple of sloooow big blue effects.
Really makes it feel more massive, like there is a huge mass travelling at great velocities suddenly appearing, conveying the intensity of the hyperdrive itself.
I concur. I prefer having the feeling of warping, instead of just pretty particle effects that represent it.
I had already seen the vid 4 or 5 times, but this commentary is so great to get some insight in your thinking. Thank you for that.
It's amazing to see the progress being made on this game and the attention to detail is awe inspiring.
Really great commentory for the vid. Just seems better each time I see it. Top stuff.
David and team - this is truly amazing! You guys (and gals) must be under tremendous pressure since you're delivering on the famous Elite series here, but so far everything looks like you are exceeding expectations! Great job Frontier!!
Love the video and the hard work you guys at FD are doing. I am like a kid in a sweet shop with ED and SC being released around the same time :) Really looking forward to them both, its been a long time since I have felt this excited about a computer game release.
The attention to detail really shines through.
And it is impressive to see what the game engine can produce in its current state!
Awesome to see the thought going into this :D
I always look forward to the video updates, they usually make my day! The art diary sounds really cool too. I wonder if the developers might consider selling posters of a couple of concept pieces...
There are some post processed effects but this is primarily the in-game engine (called Cobra) and it is definitely worth checking out some of the other details of how the game will work on the forums. David Braben (the head of Frontier) is a genius and has pulled together a fantastic team of top players. Game of the decade (at least).
Looks great so far.
Wow. @Colin Firth - I second everything you say. Proud to have invested and very much looking forward to rebooting this aspect of my childhood.
Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking. This is coming along really really well, it looks amazing here. Incredibly exciting to think about the finished version. I think just simply travelling the galaxy (that warp looks incredible!) and landing on planets will be amazing enough. The combat here looks on par with that though, looks so good!
The dog-fighting looks like a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward to a video about trading and the universe infrastructure.
Keep up the great work.
This video is very exciting. The ship leaning I think is plausible as the force of the escaping and expanding gases from the explosions could push the ship about its axis. And although laser beams might not be visible in space they look awesome!
If the ships were in battle above a planet, then the gravitational pull of the planet would allow for that sinking effect to be covered. Either way, loved the video when I saw it the first time and thank you Chris for taking the time to go through it in detail, very interesting.
Can't wait for the game, it's looking more and more amazing every time you release content information for it.
I thought this whole thing was pre-rendered using blender or whatever. BUT THIS IS IN-ENGINE? Wow. Simply... wow. Amazing.
I'm honored to be a backer of this project.
Very insightful.
I'm so excited about this game! Thanks to everyone who backed it too!
There is still an Official Elite kickstarter ongoing.Check it out here;

I love it! Thank you guys :D
Awesome folks, keep it up!
What I love about this game is the attention to detail and reality :)
A W E S O M E , Can't wait to install it, great work!
The game is looking awesome!
I will definitely pick this one up.
Awesome stuff, can't wait for the game to be released :)
I can't wait for this game.
Thanks David for giving us this "technology insides"..... around 6:30 I think we see a COBRA MK III ???? AMAZING!!
I have to say I am really impressed with the way this game being developed. It's almost the opposite of how the industry works and yet it's a breath of fresh air at the same time. I think I am going to get the Digital Download Pack for the holidays this year. I may have to wait to play it but I think it will be worth it.
Beta is currently scheduled in January/February, and they also said they follow the plan, but they will update schedule soon, so stay tuned.
there is so much more to it. there is no resistance in space so the ships guns recoil (provided enough force) would make the ship go in the opposite direction. Also there is a lot more to it like gravitational pull of the ships, celestial bodies and the star which would probably make the ships travel at very high speed, depending on there distance to the objects, in an orbit.
i am so glad to see so many new space sims and i am eager to see if elite or star citizen has the lead! i can only hope the ingame will really look like this and it is playable with normal mid-high end pc in this quality. would be really sweet
A broken hull would also leak air though, might act as a continuous jet pushing it in one direction. While the mass difference is still extreme, theres no real friction in space, so maybe a constant small force would be enough for dead ship to slowly tilt away noticably.
Elite (original) always flew like a terrestrial flight simulator. Personally, despite having a degree in physics, I've always found this sort of space flight is more exciting than the Newtonian sims, where you tend to end up jetting hard one way, turning to your enemy and strafing while you whiz passed.
Having an enemy locked in your cross hairs while you pitch and yaw your way through space is just more fun.
To make some of the instinctual things more realistic;
a) Lazer beams could be simulated by your ships HUD.
b) ships tilt when damaged simply due to a random part blowing up and being flug irregularly in one direction.
It was announced to officially supported last week, see Kickstarter Elite Dangerous project page last update :)
i thank you very much my friend.
The Imperial cruisers have a design flaw with the spinning section being parallel with the direction of acceleration. The ship will be fine when it is not accelerating, but when it is, the people and things in the spinning section will be pulled one way, and then the opposite direction as they spin round. In between these, they will feel lighter and then heavier.
i would love to see more procedural stuff!
Not to mention the decompression of all the compartments venting oxygen (or whatever they breathe) into space, further pushing the ship in the opposite direction :)
The leaninflg sbipcan be explajned as the navigation goes down and there are no tbrusters keeping it straight after the explosions. But i agree that effect shou
"Elite: Dangerous" has way more than just space combat, it has a realistic scale Milky Way galaxy with planets that orbit and rotate, with freeform interplanetary flight and slingshotting around stars and planets and lots of other gameplay like trading and stuff.
It will go alpha in December this year and a full release in March 2014.
It will have seamless landing and walking on planets with cities and wildlife in the first expansion within a year after release.
It seems you didn't watch actual video in question, when David speaks about inspiration of these ships - of golden age of exploration, when such war ships were actually made. On second note, they will be heavily protected and shielded. For example, you won't be able to fly trough of the middle of that Federation cruiser unless it has power down and is seriously damaged.
All I know is I'll be playing this, Star Citizen, and X-Rebirth. Fantastic games, all of them.
I am so stoked for this game, I hope I've got the money to upgrade my pc and play this once it is released.
The artificial gravity is pulling everyone outwards, which means the windows (if they are windows, which I think they won't be) will be skylights. Plus also in spaceship with no gravity there won't be a 'up' or 'down', the spaceship would just have rooms that would have build into the walls & the people would orient themselves to the built in things.
I've seen the C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate...
The reason that this will occur is that when the ship accelerates, everything inside the ship will feel a force pulling them in the opposite direction. For the people in the spinning section, this direction will be constantly changing. For these people, it will feel very much like a ship pitching up and down in heavy sea, depending on the actual acceleration.
First, ships has fly-by-wire flight assist. Second, this assist can be damaged or turned off and have actual fun flying in space (which will be much harder of course).
So very cool. I'm going to be so hooked on this game.
Has there been more explanation on the change in how FTL is working in this? It looks like they're using a Star Trek style warp drive rather than the type of hyperjump drive we've seen in previous Elite game.
I love how those who invested in this game can watch It being built.. This is done right! The investors get to see how their money is being used every step of the way. And as a bonus, non investors get to watch this game being born too. This is a smart move because everyone invests interest which will make for a more solid fanbase.
in small segment where they show scene without textures to show how landing works. One is Eagle, other is Cobra.
the HUD could only show something it knows, the firing ship, ok , the attacked ship? with directly hit & undammaged(for how long) sensors maybe. other ships? unless there's some reflection, i dont see how they could detect it at all. you may have to fly through it to "notice" its presence.
Fantastic job! For this game the on-line mode will have more interesting features than the frozen single-player universe so I support online.
wow all that and under a million , gonna be interesting ;)
I am following Elite Dangerous since the Kickstarter and I was always excited to see you guys making this game. Also, all the talk about the game mechanics, your ideas, everything sounded great... but... seeing this "scripted" video made with the in-game engine... that blew all my expectation by far out of the water... I cannot wait to lay my hands on this game... Should I get a joystick? ^^
I would have enjoyed a little more insight into the game design feature around the video. Whereelse David appears to be focussing on the lore and backstory and what has been added in post production to round off the look of the video.
Anyway, updates are always appreciated. And maybe the announced art breakdown of the video will give more info on the game design from a mechanical point of view, too.
Nice Vid. @7.55 You say the ship would not list but I say it would. Hull is damaged and gas is venting pushing the ship. Also the missiles hit with force adding to the listing. The listing could show loss of power or navigation.
David, in fact, the ship would indeed tumble. The explosive force of the missiles would induce a roll in the vessel if their Reaction Control Systems are down.
Awesome :-)
They might not be generating the same amount of buzz, but obviously they aren't focused on that either right now. However, when it comes to updates and info about the game I actually know a lot more about Elite than SC. If you head over to their forums and read through the Updates thread and the DDF Archive and then add the Newsletters and KS updates into the mix we actually have tons of info about the actual gameplay. IMO, more than SC has told us about yet.
The a very good point.
I guess if your on the same side, your computers could co-operate, but indeed, unaligned or enemy ship fire that doesn't hit anything would be impossible to know.
I mean, you could claim the ships sensors are so good they detect the heat from the nossle of the nearby guns change and extrapolate from that...but its getting a bit implausible again.
Hm I will wait for youtube to provide hd with this one
Thanks :D
*Everything* is in-game except lense flare (you will have little cockpit window flare sometimes), and that zoom in when Feds ship pulls out it's big guns. So they are in-game.
Im SC backer BUT THIS GAME WILL EAT SC ALIVE! So much better i cannot believe it.. David is way ahead of Chris. Good luck guys i cannot wait playing this gem. shame alpha is £200. i would pay for alpha right now if its like £100. god speed
It looks a bit like trackIR when the internal view...
Hope they include support for track IR... :D
I think this highlights a common inaccuracy in every space sci-fi game I've ever seen: explosions like that would not just gently rock a ship. The ship would be *pushed*; violently moved, not just shaken or rotated on the spot, as if it's invisibly anchored.
One additional possibility that hasn't been considered is this: In the event of serious damage to communication systems, this leeward tilting (with respect to the attacking ship) might be a recognized "white flag" signal when only visual communications are possible.
I have a question: At approx. 5 minutes where the 'luxury' section of the imperial ship is shown, you state that it's rotating to provide gravity for its inhabitants. However, the windows facing out of the ring seem to not be skylights but instead windows you might find in an office. This would imply that although there IS gravity aboard the ship, it's pinning everyone to the walls, which surely cannot be comfortable!
yep they will support it
A much better design would have the spinning section spinning perpendicular to the direction of acceleration, as when the ship accelerates, it will feel like the ship is sloped, with the slope going down towards the back of the ship. The slope, however, be constant whilst the ship was accelerating at a constant acceleration.
I'd love to see more info on this coming out more frequently. Gets to me that Star Citizen seem to have the balance about right in terms of releasing info on the development of the game and also with their pledges - god I want a Constellation so bad! - but Elite don't seem to be producing the same amount of buzz or interest, which is sad as I've been playing it since the first release in the 80's and want to see MOAR!!
I think some turning could be, but not so obviously fast as seen by observer so far.
I already order the game,, but real good video,. I always check.. tks
doing star citizen also..
Obviously transparent floors are popular, even mandatory for your reputation, if you're a member of the imperial high society.
Have you checked out Chris Robert's Star Citizen? They have weekly updates available for everyone.
The gameplay looks a lot more smoove and in tune for a plain space combat game. Star Citizen has some competition!
Exactly my point, yet the windows don't look like skylights, they look like office windows some with half closed blinds; hence my concern that the ship builders may have made a boo boo. This could be why the particular model of Imperial ship shown there was sold instead of made part of the Imperial Fleet hehe.
Offline SP universe won't be frozen - it will have same distinguished background simulation. It won't have injected events, so galaxy won't take sudden turns. Also player actions will be weighted differently, as there will be only one player. Practically Offline SP won't have other players and injected events. Everything else still will be there.
Looks fantastic so far.
Generally in Elite games I'm a professional space bastard: Hopefully the next update will shed a little light on some of my favourite past times: slavery, drug/gun running, assassinations and some good old fashioned piracy and murder!
Space sim gamers are such a niche there should never be a division in our ranks. I will get all: X rebirth, Star Citizen and Elite. If you like these type of games there is no excuse not to get them all.
I agree they all compliment each other. This genre is easily my favorite when done well and this game along side star citizen I'm sure with satisfy the hardcore fans. X Rebirth is a nice start to a great future of modern Space sims
Unfortunately I don't think you'll be getting X Rebirth as with many disappointed space sim fans.
marcopolo3001
Yea, I'm one of them...
marcopolo3001 lol I got it on release and I was totally let down :(
you think right :)
Look's awesome !
I'm so going to get this !
Unfortunately Chris Roberts has been stealing my gaming budgets for the last couple of months !
So he is.. that's me getting space game developers mixed up.. I'm so sorry David!
It wasn't Sidewinder, could be Cobra, but not sure.
I know that - but even with FBW the movement of those fighters look very "plane" like and very little "spaceship" like.
I'm a fan of utility over fanciness. Leaning heavily towards federation after this video. ^_^
Lasers, not a problem. If you have wild intensity, many energy layered burst, (non uniform wave behavior ) that can be visible . Rolling to side after hit, that is also nice, even though this ELITE realm is not all that advance ship that size, should be using some primitive MASS generators /dampers /amps,and when they fail you go drift .
FREE ZAONCE !!!!
it's been confirmed, the other ship isnt a sidewinder.
Ahhhhh, but what if they've engaged the external inertial dampening systems?
It's not going to be spinning fast enough for that to happen, unless it seriously malfunctions.
cobra mk3(6:30) most likely, it doesnt look like the sidewinders, and it's not a cobra mk1
It's more of "flying embasy", not actual warship. See Dev diary #4 for more details.
it is fast *enough* to keep you on the ground, you don't need full Earth gravity, you just need 1/10th of that.
well ... "Reaction Control Systems" i.e. thrusters correcting the ship position automatically seem to explain anything concerning that - no?
Will players be able to pilot capital Ships?
I still want an Eagle in that Arctic camo colour scheme. :P
was that a cobra mk3 I saw in that vid?
