    I had the idea earlier and I feel like I have to share it here.Smaller pirate ships could be better equipped to take on the larger ships in ambushes if it was possible to upload viruses in order to limit or disable specific aspects of opponent's ships.
    I would suggest that this was only possible at close range when the larger ship's shields were down. For this to be an option, shields would need to be disabled in order to pick up resources from space. [...]

    Fantastic. I've been dreaming about having Star Trek-like shield effects for more than a decade. Finally. Looking so much forward to this game!

    I can't wait. I played the first ELITE the month it was released, on the BBC Micro (pretty much the first computer I was exposed to). Without a doubt, it set the stage for what I dreamed computer games could become. When FRONTIER was released for the Amiga, I think I lost a good three months in a blur of interstellar adventures. As I approach middle age, I'm excited for the possibility of David's latest project recapturing the wonder of my childhood again :D

    FreeSpace 2 had a great power distribution micro management mini-game during battles. It was awesome - please do something simlar!

    The original Elite was the best computer game I've ever played! Stoked that this game is finally being brought into the 21st century. I'm roughly same age as DB, and it seems like such a long time to have waited. Glad for him too.....now i have something new to look forward to!

    I love the idea of being able to get inside the shield of larger ships, it would be great as you could use a large ship as a carrier and a couple of small ships as fighters that can use the larger ships shields for protection while recharging before diving back into battle to fight off the attackers, would make for some very good team play

    Very pleased and very excited that "we" all made it. Don't rush it David, but please "hurry up". My Cobra needs a run and engine check as it has not been started since 1986. .....and they are a nightmare to start from cold. Wishing the team a wonderful and exciting 2013.

    I'd be happy to see an equippable device like a shield capacitor in this game. An extra reservoir of energy that could all be dumped into a single shield all at once in an emergency. You'd have to decide which shield to charge and when, and once you've used it, it'll only recharge once all your other shields are back at 100%.

    He is like a kid at Christmas eve but has the know how to make this work. I for one can't wait. If the main theme isn't Blue Danube I'm going to be most upset ;D

    Having to manage energy levels and transferring power to different systems was already in games a early as X-Wing (the earliest example I can think of), where you had to manage weapon, shield and engine power and where you also could transfer power between weapons and shields and in the case of shields to which shields.
    And you often had to do it, in the middle of combat, while Tie Fighters were peppering you with their weaponary. I don't think a multi-crew ship is needed, but would be nice.

    I always pronounced it co-bra myself, all these years since Elite on the BBC micro... now hearing DB say cob-ra, and checking the proper pronunciation online, I stand corrected!

    Star Trek On-line uses a very simplistic shield model that allows the player to transfer power from one shield to another, but also engine power can be diverted to shields as well. If this power transfer were to be available on the large multi shielded ships, this could make running a large ships tricky. Maybe time to consider multiple players running one ship? Different roles; pilot, gunner, engineer, navigator, etc...

    [...] I just love the idea of a pirate waiting in ambush near a derelict for someone to try their had at looting it, only to be partially disabled and under attack before they know what's happening.
    It would take a little time to upload the programs, and one of the options for your ship could be investing in better firewalls to detect and stop these attacks before they're successful.
    Larger ships wouldn't get this advantage because they'd be spotted before successfully uploading anything.

    I'd say use all the shield shapes and shield effects. Use them for different types and brands of shields with their own pro's and con's.

    I know I'm late to the party but energy shields should probably just hug the architecture of the ship. Basically, it's an energy field that "coats" the hull (with maybe a small gap in between). That avoids problems with players getting under shields, if possible, and it can be a good visual indicator of what's exposed and what's not. My two cents. :)

    It's so good to see the old-school veterans making sequels to beloved old games. It really has been far too long since a twitch space-trading game has been released. Now all that's needed is for someone to make a new X-Wing/TIE Fighter.

    I feel really bad that this game got overshadowed by Star Citizen so much. If they had released at really different times then I reckon that E:D would have made so much more on Kickstarter.

      I think they have the upper hand now, since they have a fully playable game with a big community, and everyone can see what they accomplished so far.

    Co-bra is actually correct but I too have always said Cob-ra and I'm damn well sticking to it.
    (They are probably both correct).

    Sir braven, I keep forcing my plasma in their rear, looking at the giant bubble very curvaceous, but the shield remains. They have 7 shield boosters and guardian shield reinforcement. Perhaps I'm hitting the wrong shield?? Anyway, it's very exciting, extremely exciting, but after 40 minutes after their cell banks as well and I've sythned three times I start to wonder that even if I get this rear shield down I still have the over 6 you talk about and then I am concerned that I would be happier just buying another ship kit thank you

    How about the Player can choose the shilds in OPTIONS? I like the big ball around a ship like in star trek. Let the Player choose the shield and effects himselve. that would be amazing. ;)

    It would need to be dangerous though, to stop people doing it all of the time. Perhaps you'd actually need to remove the containment fields around your drives in order to give off the correct radiation. They could be much more likely to blow up if they're fired upon, so it'd be a question of if it's worth the risk of you're enemy not caring if your ship is left intact.

    Omg!! Happy 2013 and thanks David "Caption Closed", is where a link of forum to suggestion best about shield ... but said MAC is too stupid soon a first launch -.- ... PC is more population of world ... this am sad =( ... Brasil used 76% PC, 17% MAC and other linux.

    And the Player should not be able fly into the shilds! only he have a "shield frequency scanner" so his shilds will set to the enmy frequency and can finaly pass true the enemy shields with his energy weapons und fly true it.

    @1:42 Ok, your planning a front and aft shield. So your plans take more than 9 years to create. So I would expect this to happen somewhere.. ehm let's say 2022?
    @2.09 So when it takes about 9 years to implement 2 shields I will expect it to have many many many shield generators somewhere in the year 3306.
    @2:34 mentioned gameplay. Ok, so where is the gameplay?
    @3:24 "It will still be possible to get under the shield". Please show me a demo where this can be done. Then I am really really sold.
    @4:02 mentions gameplay again. So where is it?
    @4:32 All very exciting, I had a wet dream 8 years ago and now I am having an affair (especially after fleet carriers beta dropped).
    So yeah, that is all I have to say for now.

      Technically in an SLF if you ram a large ship like a conda, cutter, or Vette, and hug it tightly, you can deal hull damage and get under the shields

      @@Tube2097 I stopped playing ED shortly after I wrote that comment. I suddenly realised that Frontier Developments had changed to 'maintenance mode' with ED. The main problem is the way the game's funded. There isn't much financial incentive to advance the game because a lot of people bought the version whereby they wouldn't have to pay for future updates. Now, I only play games that have a monthly subscription because this is the 'least worst' option compared to all the other funding methods. For your interest, I now play Eve Echoes on my iPad and on an Android simulator on my PC.
