Normally, my imagination is so much better than game designers, but this is the first time a game designer has come up with stuff better than I could possibly imagine.
Orbits! Real scale of planets and the universe! Seamless gameplay! Sounds fantastic!
As soon as you announce the premium beta, I'm going to back!
Most of the things you're asking about will be considerations for a future update, when we hope to add the ability for players to get out of their ship as a playable character. There will of course be ways for you to repair your ship when you are out in open space at first launch though. : )
One of the few games I hyped for, Thanks for keeping us upto date!
I say this in every video you have posted so far but I still mean it, I can't wait for this.
Beautiful .
I played elite 2 when i was young. I loved it! I am really looking forward to the new game.
So many "Yes's" as always. Love you =)
As big a success as the Kickstarter was, its a drop in the ocean in what it takes to make a modern worthy successor. It annoys me they will now have to answer to these big investors, but I also thank them grudgingly for allow it to be made at all! I have high hopes that David and the crew at Frontier will make this a great success!
Loving the orbiting planets. That's good news!
Coming along nicely, Braben knows what he is doing ( I hope).
Roll on next year and getting into my fighter!
Full orbits in real time! Really looking forward to finding breathtaking eclipses :)
Hi jony, If you'd like more in-depth updates from the development of the game then you'll probably be interested in our newsletters. Sadly I cannot link you to them here, but if you go to our official forums and search for 'newsletter thread' you will be able to find a link to our archive.
Yes you can still back the game and sign up on their main Website
As a backer, I wasn't pleased by his words about investors but I hope that Braben will not disappoint us.
yaaah whoooooo another week closer on my calendar
2:01 is a thing of beauty.
i'm willing to continue to trust DB's vision on E: D. if it means simply that these extra backers might see the game being released on other platforms (ie, besides PC + Mac), then i'm all for it.
Don't worry, the DDF will shout that down :), plus this investment is for "other platforms and where to go after the game is released". This is still David Braben's vision and I have been very impressed so far.
I feel the ability to leave my ship and walk around is of huge importance to me if I want to get immersed and play it as a role playing game.
I want to see more people from your team, not only you.
My pick is that it could be related with release to consoles - publisher or exclusive (for consoles).
Correction btw, I meant 400 billion star systems. instead of just 4 billion
More ?s On crew activities 8D when you showed the ingame damage done to the anaconda ship we could see inside. Depending on ship size and how much resources areleft for repairing. Are crew members going to be able to suitup & go outside the ship and inside the exposed hull to repair? When docking with a larger ship will are crews be loading / maintenance? If landing on a planet. Can I deploy squads of (or) crew members? Some armed with weapons others with research/ exploring devices?
There won't be any hacking as such, but there might be ways to interfere with an opponent's ship systems, such as their jump drive- for example.
Lucky You!
Anyway my point is that High-Fidelity gfx doesn't automatically mean something will look better overall.
You can brute-forcely throw fidelity at SC all you want, but it won't ever address the issues I talked about, which are for me the main reasons I play space games.
I wish you could show some more videos and photos of the actual game with these diaries you have, even if its just your current idea sketch.
I wouldn't worry too much. I think Braben has thrown the gates open to other investors on his own terms (effectively rendering them silent) so that he can expand the game as far as possible- other platforms etc. Regardless the game IS going to be made now and that ensures that investors are FOLLOWING a happening project rather than having the power to MAKE it happen. Extra investment can only be a good thing
Oculus rift support would be real great too, not seeing any craft interiors yet thats worrying me a little.
Artificial gravity can't be a luxury, it's required for prolonged spaceflight. Based on what we currently know about bone loss within astronauts aboard the ISS, explaining any physiological solution to that after thirteen hundred years is no less a stretch than some gravitational field generator considering faster-than-light travel is completely mastered in this time period.
Very advanced medicine or gene therapy?

I love this design, i really do.
But..... If they were to accelerate or decelerate while anyone is onboard that rotating habitat....... I can't imagine it would be a pleasant experience to have a horizontal rotating artificial gravity ring being accelerated from one of the ends.
The people on the front end would be thrusted up into the ceiling xD
Come on now, month has passed since last Progress Diary, dont' keep us hanging :-)
My impression from the 'investor' announcement, is that Frontier are still one of the largest investors - if not the largest - so should have good control. Also, the game is being scrutinised pretty heavily by the design and private backers and general forum. I'm not sure what nasty things the investors could slip past us.
Star Citizen is also taking on around private investment, I believe.

All Through With This Niceness And Negotiation Stuff
I've made myself sad :( RIP Iain Banks
From what I understand, yes. It looks like when you buy a ship you are able to customize the interior sections of the ship. You are limited to the capacity of your chosen class of ship. If I am wrong someone please correct me.
Is there a crafting system?
We will be able to walk around on the larger ships and on planets/moons?
Are there skill trees and different character classes?
Yeah it has to be a concern having put my money in and participating in the design forums I wonder if its just the "tech and tools" or some other involvement.
Or "Congratulations on your first warp", I would not worry about seeing this in ED :).
Whit extra investment Elite:Dangerous can be gradually evolving into a space mmo game!
This game really deserves to become a so wanted space game whit mmo elements!
I'm hoping there are Easter eggs, perhaps Monoliths from 2001, the Apollo 11 landing site, Blake's 7 Liberator, references to other things. Not in the way for example, Borderlands 2 does it, just proper, subtle little hidden references and gems.
Hopefully those investors are silent and just friends and not people that will interfere as in the likes of EA. As a KickStarter purchaser, we have to realise we're not classed as or have legal rights as investors, we are donators. I believe it states that on the KickStarter T&C. We're essentially gloried pre-order owners but in a good way. Knowing David is behind this & is clearly passionate about it I hope & feel he won't let the big investors push him about.
To be fair, it's always been the idea that the kickstarter was to rouse investors and prove there is a market. We all bought into a game where we knew this was going to happen.
At the end of the day, all the major release games we've played up until the last couple years have been investor-backed, and damn have there been some gems. Investors aren't the Antichrist, though they can get pretty close at times.
Is it coming this year.!!!Whens it out.!
Well, I'm not sure Aidoggy meant that Elite:Dangerous was not for profit, just (perhaps) expressing a bit of regret that - as is the case for some games - Elite:Dangerous now runs the risk of being beholden to more than just Frontier's design direction. And now has more direct ties to investors (outside of the Kickstarter backers) to satisfy.
And while I don't share any of that pessimism, it would be equally naive to think that taking on additional backers doesn't mean a loss of some control.
I think this game will get mentioned in the Big Bang Theory eventually.
And when they will relase video update ?
any change of getting some gameplay or screen shots the next dev diary
on a completely unrelated topic; will An der schönen blauen Donau, Op. 314 still be the docking computer music? just wondering :-)
Check out the "Elite: Dangerous newsletters", "Design Discussion Archive" and Wiki for more detailed progress updates.
Will the new elite have the "SPECIAL" mission function, like saving people on the space station by skimming the sun with a ram scoop for fuel while dodging the thargons? If I remember correctly, I did 7 such missions, each one dependent on successfully completing the previous special mission
Can't help but notice these development updates are just Q and A's. I enjoy them but actual development updates would be much appreciated.
Will u be able to hack/send viruses through Coms feeds so that u can disable a ships systems?
oooo bulletin board face from braben.
Extra investment can only be a good thing in these circumstances. The game is going to be made now regardless of outside investment rendering new investors as effectively following the project rather than driving it (as they would have been if the new game hadn't yet secured funding for development).
I must have missed that. Thanks. so you would have a trading rank and a combat rank. that makes me feel so much better. The key 'hook' for me is a combat rank. I can understand others want different things but to dilute the nature of the combat rank would have been such a disaster. thanks
Why are these updates taking so long to get posted up? this video has been out since June!
Think of the bright side mang. Investors expect results too so there's less of a threat of this being just vaporware. Yeah I know I'm a pessimist but I also backed quite a bit of money and I really want this to happen.
8( I'm wondering about our crew? We know that we can walk around our ship & stardock, etc... But what about their crew activities? If I go into a space station and get into a fire fight with an enemy Captain [or BountyHunter] & his personal guards.. I want some of my crew with me & the rest of them would be guarding my ship right? That is the ? I'd like answered 8D
Can we have plenty of character space for the ship names please? I'm going for a Culture ship name :)
Also, the fact that they already have a million pounds in the bank means that they can pick and choose their investors. It's not as if they had no money and had to suck up to anyone who throws a few coins at them.
I have just one request. In Game Video. Please!
You are being naive if you thought that Elite Dangerous was a not for profit operation before the larger investors came on board. Frontier as a developer of games would have been looking to make as much money from this as possible, they are a business after all. Chances are they have some large publisher interest, who are prepared to invest a larger sum, to enable the development possible to other platforms such as the PS3/4 and Xbox360/One.
SC's galaxy has only 115+ star systems and the distances and planet sizes won't be realistically scaled will follow the limited sector approach with some static space backdrop, unlike in ED that will have have 4 billion start systems with planets with realistic sizes and distances between them, it will improve on the previous Elite games, just do a google search on "Frontier: Elite 2" and "Frontier: First Encounters" aka Elite 3 to see what I'm talking about.
I didnt back this game, is there a way to still get early access? Or i could just wait for it to come out and pay full price. I tell ya guys i am so fucking excited about this game!
Hopefully they'll have the sense not to interfere too much and at most provide analysis to assist decision making.
development video soon its been quite a while
Elite: Dangerous just like it's predecessors will have a large number of handcrafted systems too in the core systems based on real-world star data, if that's not reason enough for why they are then I don't know what is? and they all have a background story too in addition to the procedurally generated ones which will have procedurally generated ones which will be generated based on certain properties we know about star and planet formation, so it's not all just random nonsense out of thin air.
if it brings it to consoles it'll gain a massively larger audience. But I still hope for a native Linux version.
Hopeful that the back in question will just be a distribution deal, if its an EA or a Sega who demand a release date of an unfinished product, and then patch the shit out of it for months till its playable, A lot of people will not be pleased.
Were can I find the "Question inbox" to send mine?
Often to get real good non intrusive investments, developers have to prove their is a market for thrir game. Kickstarter serves that purpose amazingly well, while also kicking in some serious starter cash :D
Maybe we could have an in game browser ? and in game internet too that would be so cool, Elite universe own internet :)
You might but I certainly won't.
As long as that backer isn't EA, good news!
Guys, that game will be in Steam?
'I Said, I've Got A Big Stick', was my favourite. Mind it only really works when written in tiny letters. And, of course, the magnificent 'Mistake Not My Current State Of Joshing Gentle Peevishness For The Awesome And Terrible Majesty Of The Towering Seas Of Ire That Are Themselves The Milquetoast Shallows Fringing My Vast Oceans Of Wrath'
R.I.P. Iain. British literature is so much poorer with you gone.
Thanks for the response. I will have to sign up for that. I'm a programmer and would love to hear about some of the engine work you are doing. I particularly loved the overgrowth alpha weekly update videos. (check them out here watch?v=f1G1swqs0DU) They were very popular even with people who are not programmers. If you would be prepared to do something like that I would be a very happy pilot. Good luck.
will the multiplayer gameplay style be like Eve online(Not in terms of fighting) but in terms of how the actual MMO works. What Im seeing so far is this is just some game where people mindlessly kill each other in different multiplayer combat scenarios?
I would be very disappointed if there isn't a server(like star citizen) that is owned by frontier devs.
Will the gameplay be THAT DIFFERENT from SC???
wait a minute. that's a ship name? in a real book? just when literature couldn't get more awesome- no just kidding, everything ALWAYS becomes more awesome
treat yourselves at frontier to an oculus dev kit
Other than their kickstarter backers, I guess. :)
i oonly want to land on exoplanets...
Announcement that it will be EA in 3... 2...
If Frontier had a flag, I'd pledge allegiance to it.
My ? I'm dieing to get answered is. What about our crew members activities? Since there are different size ships, their should be larger crews for larger ships. When we dock our ships at a space port. We should be ablebring some crew members with us as security and leave the rest to guard our ship 8D I would love nothing more than to dock at a starport to pick up supplies & Run into an enemy captain with his guards or bounty hunters then have a epic firefight with me & my crew. Crewsneedweapons2
Perhaps, but the fact that they raised a million pounds on Kickstarter will be a huge bargaining chip.
Meddling executives are not out to destroy franchises: they simply want to make more money. That's why they like to appeal to the lowest common denominator and why they don't like to innovate.
A successful Kickstarter campaign proves that people want to buy whatever ideas are advertised by the campaign, so new investors are more likely to believe that those ideas will pay off.
Just another comment.
If ranking is going to be diluted by trading goals then its devalued in many peoples eyes.
I hope we can check out how many player kills an enemy pilot has achieved (and I mean player kills not npc bot kills.
If im in a dog fight with Elite's equivalent of the Red Barron I want to know about it. I think combinie a none combat ranking is a huge mistake to be honest.
They are just investors not developer...
I will be one of the first people who will buy this game
ffs i saw this ages ago
Trading gets you 'elite' status. Dont make me laugh. Thats a poor idea.
Rest of it sounds amazing.
Cant wait. I'll be out there somewhere in space looking for you.
Capt. Kidd (the skeleton pirate).
Please bring this game too PS4. I really dont have the room for a pc gaming rig and it would be great to play on my tv with a controller. I used to play Elite Frontier on a tv with my Amiga so its not that crazy an idea really.
4 billion star systems? Literally all of those will be generated. All of the systems of Star Citizen have a story, have a reason for why they are why they are, etc etc. And no, 115 systems is what they have currently. That could change at any moment. All of the stuff we are talking about can change literally at any time; we're talking out of our asses about games that aren't out yet.
I'm famous!
SC ship designs look ridiculously over the top, with big guns and stuff hanging around everywhere and they don't look like they would ever be able to enter a planet's atmosphere safely and not to mention some of the asymmetrical designs.
SC will have autopilot-only interplanetary and re-enterring atmospheric flights for landing only with artificial sectors and zones.
I'm going to call my ship "Tulisa" and I expect to be banged up for narcotics trafficking! :-)
You are wrong. Elite: Dangerous' aesthetics and ship designs are way nicer and much more believable, also it will have a real scale galaxy with real scale planets orbiting and rotating and free-form interplanetary and atmospheric flight. So this means that Elite: Dangerous has the SPACE part of space-sim covered properly as opposed to almost every other space game.
I think its very disappointing given the driver behind the kickstarter was independence from publishers etc. and doing their own game, and driven by the supporters/fans.
