I said it before and I'll say it again.. last year when I was in venice, saint marks square one night, the quintet was playing Blue Danube and my fiancé was dancing around but all I could think about was bloody docking!! true story ;)
There was an Elite quiz somewhere, "How Elite are you" with one of the questions "Have you ever screamed 'Right on, Commander' while having sex?" With extra points of you got dumped because of it.
Actually, Star Citizen is behind in overall development, but its progress seems more steady; Elite: Dangerous has more features in its current state but still haven't solved the networking issues that are going on by 6 months now, and has a much more obscure roadmap (feature complete by september? well...). All in all, I think the two projects are pretty on par on delivering so far, if you're not a fanboy of one or the other. And yes I do play and love both.
Andrea Villa In my defense, I'm an Elite fanboy. SC would have to be a better game than ED by a very significant margin before I'd choose to play it over ED, for no other season than simple nostalgia. It's okay to be a fanboy. The trick is to just not be an obnoxious little shit about it. But of course, this is the internet we're talking about. :P
Henry Pailing It would not need a counter spin as it is in a vacuum, satellites are often spun in orbit a give all of their instruments equal time facing earth.
Henry Pailing It appears these cylinders are designed using relatively current technology, where rocket propellant, which would be needed to keep them pointing the right way (as they rely on pointing towards the sun all the time) , is expensive. If noted they use motors to slightly alter the way the cylinders rotate in order to keep them pointing the right way. The Orbit station will be using technology from 1300 years in the future, where space propulsion is cheap, so any strange gyroscopic effect can easily be corrected by conventional means.
Henry Pailing I might be wrong about this, but I think the gyroscopic effects only become a problem when you try to rotate the station against its axis of continuous rotation. So a design using two opposite rotating parts might be unnecessary for a station in fixed orbit. But I agree that it is unlikely a station like the Orbis will exist in a thousand years, as science probably will have advanced to a point where technology then is unrecognisable from technology today.
So evocatively beautiful. I first watched the film 2001 A Space Odyssey in 1968. This video brings reminds me of the sheer wonder I had in first seeing the docking sequence in that film. It's nice to know I still have that sense of wonder. Thank you
Well, that looked lovely and nice to hear that classic tune being re-introduced into Elite. The detail in the rings impressed me the most, looked very interesting.
To all the people who are commenting about the 2001 connection you might want to know that the blue Danube was the original Elite music back in the 80s.
This is what I imagined in 1984 ( 10 years old ) when I docked playing on my Acorn Electron. Now I'm seeing it ( 40 years old ) with a slightly better PC. I will be Elite again.
The original Elite was what I was playing when I first heard the Blue Danube and it was from then on always a favorite classical music for me. I was so happy when I watched this VID today and heard it once again and associated with an Elite game!! 8D
Just...beautiful. Wouldn't be Elite without the Blue Danube. Of course, both Elite and Frontier always looked like this... but beforehand it looked like this only in my head! I Still can't quite believe it will now genuinely look and feel so gorgeous.
I've probably said this before on Elite:Dangerous progress videos, but... Stunning, just stunning! Will we be able to fly-by this station and see the detail of the gardens and landscaping inside the rotating wheel?
Aaaaww....memory lane. Wait a second...lane? More of a big highway with several lanes. I am looking so forward to explore that station one day with the FPA expansion. :) Thanks Braben.
C-64 FTW ! nostalgic ! game is shaping up really nicely, takes a bit of practice to dogfight, but has a lot of depth in the tactics. ...oh... and its beautiful !
Please tell me we'll be getting more of the original Elite songs like this. I know there's some sort of awesome space-epic procedural soundtrack coming up, but seriously, Hall of the Mountain King in a battle or this when docking wouldn't go amiss!
How does the scale of your own ship (and pilot - which for some reason cannot be seen behind the window), compare to the scale of the station and the... neighbourhoods you can see in the ring? Is it realistic? Also the almost cliché tiny random lighted window dots... Are they on scale to actually mean anything? (like fitting realistic size rooms behind them) - I doubt that part. Also the rotation speed is realistically that would be needed for the g measure you want to achieve? Or you just choose a "game comfortable" rotation speed? (btw in a real life scenario, no space port authority would allow you to fly casually inside the disk radius - which of course is "counter-youtube-friendly")
When the ship reaches the desired speed does not make sense to keep connected thrusters, because in space there is no matter to cause friction and slow the ship. They are only needed in accelerations , decelerations and other maneuvers. That's how probes work
Wonderful. I need to get into this and start trading in metal alloys again. That's where the real excitement is. Or, I could just go on a mad intergalactic killing spree instead with numerous high energy dog fights. It's a tricky decision.
Are the artificial gravity habitats for real? Haven't seen those models before! Looks beautiful. Can't wait for future releases with virtual avatars - exploring space stations on foot!!!
Loved the video, great space odyssey 2001 homage. I always think one thing though when looking at the Elite space stations... Why did the fictitious station designers design the entrance as a letter box and not just a circle? :D
Once in every 10 years a game comes along that forces you to upgrade your PC so you can play it at MAX bling with perfect framerates. THIS IS SUCH A GAME
plot twist: he didn't ask for docking permission.
I said it before and I'll say it again.. last year when I was in venice, saint marks square one night, the quintet was playing Blue Danube and my fiancé was dancing around but all I could think about was bloody docking!! true story ;)
I really don't see it as bad thing! :) That is, if you like dancing with your fiance too :)
It was great!.. but funny how I was in the middle of the piazza and thinking about frontier / FEE just because of the iconic song ;)
Oh, when you said 'docking' I thought... ah never mind.
hahahaha
There was an Elite quiz somewhere, "How Elite are you" with one of the questions "Have you ever screamed 'Right on, Commander' while having sex?" With extra points of you got dumped because of it.
That music brings a tear to my eye ;_;
This feels like the real Star Citizen. They're actually making progress instead of just selling virtual ships and making promises.
God, the ignorance...
I play with my hype every night. And as it grows, my hype will continue to entertain me and the hundreds of thousands of other players.
Actually, Star Citizen is behind in overall development, but its progress seems more steady; Elite: Dangerous has more features in its current state but still haven't solved the networking issues that are going on by 6 months now, and has a much more obscure roadmap (feature complete by september? well...). Andrea Villa
Well said. Fanbois give me a pain in my tummy.
Andrea Villa In my defense, I'm an Elite fanboy. SC would have to be a better game than ED by a very significant margin before I'd choose to play it over ED, for no other season than simple nostalgia.

The best damn space sim ever. And then some.
Great work guys, and a super impressive changelog since Beta 1. Absolutely massive.

Childhood dream realised.
Clarke, Kubrick and Braben...all legends. Thank you for turning our eyes to the galaxy.

Thank you
agreed, i thought i had lost my sense awe for this medium a good while ago. nice to know it was just laying dormant.
For the first time in a space sim I really sense the size of planets and space. Bravo. This game is awesome.
Mr.Kubrick would be drooling over this :)
No, he would be playing it!
Totally spellbinding, a fitting homage to Arthur C. Clarke & Kubrick's vision. My goosebumps have goosebumps.
Great work FD!
Finally the sound track to Elite has arrived :D
That star port is probably the most amazing thing I have seen in the Oculus Rift DK2! It's size is just awesome.
I think I have a manly tear of joy in my eye...
This is not Elite: Dangerous... It's Elite: Gorgeous!
Made my Jaw drop with the gardens in the ring section =D
For some reason i want now a Babylon 5 style station ;)
That would be awesome! Something like a home away from home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers. ;)
Lirka humans and aliens wrapped in 2,500,000 tons of spinning metal. All alone in the night...
JimPlaysGames It can be a dangerous place..
Anacronian But it's our last, best hope for peace...

Looks utterly fabulous. Job well done FD!
The music could not be better. I love it when people use classical in both video & film and apply it correctly.
Well, that looked lovely and nice to hear that classic tune being re-introduced into Elite. The detail in the rings impressed me the most, looked very interesting.
Looking good! Keep up the good work can't wait for full release.
To all the people who are commenting about the 2001 connection you might want to know that the blue Danube was the original Elite music back in the 80s.

All hair raised, I almost cried...
Really great job FD !
This is what I imagined in 1984 ( 10 years old ) when I docked playing on my Acorn Electron. Now I'm seeing it ( 40 years old ) with a slightly better PC.

Brilliant, well done lads. The game is shaping up to be everything we've been waiting for...
Looks good! I love the nod to Kubrick.
Just beautiful. So looking forward to this
The original Elite was what I was playing when I first heard the Blue Danube and it was from then on always a favorite classical music for me. I was so happy when I watched this VID today and heard it once again and associated with an Elite game!! 8D
Great looking station, great video! And of course, it had to be the Blue Danube Waltz...

Congratulations Frontier Developments! You are producing an amazing game. Keep up the hard work! Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Hope that music play's every time I engage the docking computer :) stunning.
That was brilliant. Well done to whoever made this. :)
Just...beautiful. Wouldn't be Elite without the Blue Danube.

You deserve a right on Commander for the viewer experience!
I could watch this all day
You guys must have watched 2001 about 30 times while you were making this!! LOVE IT!!
Brian :)
CMDR Willis
I've probably said this before on Elite:Dangerous progress videos, but... Stunning, just stunning!
Will we be able to fly-by this station and see the detail of the gardens and landscaping inside the rotating wheel?
that is a beautiful clip brought back memories
So beautiful... so many memories...
Absolutely Gorgeous!!
Gorgeous tour-de-force in CGI, and a lovely nod to Clarke and Kubrick. :)
I was using "CGI" generally, to mean "computer generated image", not intending to imply that it was cinematic. :)
Aaaaww....memory lane.
Wait a second...lane?
More of a big highway with several lanes. I am looking so forward to explore that station one day with the FPA expansion. :) Thanks Braben.
Standard beta can't come soon enough! This looks better and better in every video.
Premium Beta's sale ends July 15, so if I had to hazard a guess beta will be around August, almost there :).
Best trailer for a space sim ever!
Simply awesome! Can't wait for Mac version!
C-64 FTW ! nostalgic ! game is shaping up really nicely, takes a bit of practice to dogfight, but has a lot of depth in the tactics. ...oh... and its beautiful !
Ahh my docking music finally
Looking forward to playing
The song played is: "An der schönen blauen Oder" ("On the beautiful blue danube") by Johann Strauss II :)
*not oder i mean Donau
Perfect!
These trailers have so many 2001: A Space Odyssey references.
Beautiful!!!
Bloody amazing!!!
Please tell me we'll be getting more of the original Elite songs like this. I know there's some sort of awesome space-epic procedural soundtrack coming up, but seriously, Hall of the Mountain King in a battle or this when docking wouldn't go amiss!
I think you will get quite a freedom to create your own soundtrack...same with ship's voice. It all will be customizable.

Ahhh...that hit the spot! :)
SO FUCKING AMAZING!! this deserve a massive raise of everybody's thumbs
Perfect music for this video.

Stunning!
Excellent video!.
Glorious, Completely and Utterly Glorious !!!
Having played Elite in the 80's and 90's and being a fan of Kubrick's 2001 this almost made me purchase the premium beta.
Nice homage to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Absolutly beautiful!!
Wonderful!
Really looking good isn't it.
finally the correct music for any Elite fan
Ahh the classic elite music. Superb
Ride of the valkyrie next please
great Show! and epic old scool docing Computer Music *g*

P-please FD. Stop tempting me to throw money at the monitor.
Die Musik bringt einem direkt zum dauerhaftem Schmunzeln :D
That video made me smile.
Class, Gracefulness and Beauty.
Are the artificial gravity habitats for real? Haven't seen those models before! Looks beautiful.
Can't wait for future releases with virtual avatars - exploring space stations on foot!!!
Gorgeous. the game looks better and better.
There will soon be off-grid'ers in Elite Dangerous!
I love that thought so very much!
:D
Loved the video, great space odyssey 2001 homage.
I always think one thing though when looking at the Elite space stations... Why did the fictitious station designers design the entrance as a letter box and not just a circle? :D
It's a thing of beauty.
Once in every 10 years a game comes along that forces you to upgrade your PC so you can play it at MAX bling with perfect framerates. THIS IS SUCH A GAME
Makes all you hair stand up doesn't it! Nostalgia reborn
Fantastic!
Brilliant!
also how do we get the out of ship views. so want to have the cam from outside.
There will be camera drone I think. We don't know anything else, but any additional camera will have in-game explanation.
Awesome so many actual space explorers and engineers are playing this GAME with all us regular folk.
ACTUAL NOSTALGIA OVERLOAD>
PURGE FEELS TANK IN>
5,,,,4,,,3,,,2,,,
Just EPIC!!! :D
love the 2001 reference
What ship featured in the video? Is it a Mamba?
A hauler, it's an entirely new ship, not so good for combat but with 16 canisters, it's the ship you want for trading before getting anything bigger.
