I love what modern JRPGs are doing with turn based combat. These games took a classic style of gameplay and brought it into modern times with innovative design. If you want to chat with us in more detail about anything and everything JRPGs then join the Discord! discord.gg/FD5nQ5rG
I absolutely love turn-based JRPGs. One of the main reasons is that as somebody who's gotten older my reflexes aren't what they used to be, and as a result my priorities shifted from competitive play to story driven narratives. Some of the best RPGs out there let the player reflect on their human experience by exploring themes that many people can relate to despite their age. This is why I always loved the Persona series, as well as Trails.
Also, another good thing DQ11 does is, when you come back to the game, after taking a break, it recaps what has happend so far, up to the current point. I could not play the game for a year and still know where I am in the progression! Genius quality of life feature!
Great list! I've had Chained Echoes on the wishlist for a while now, just need a good sale to come, even more excited seeing how recommended it comes! I saw a comment here saying you're going through the Trails series, hope you're loving it anywhere near as much as I did! (probably my favourite game series of all time at this moment!)
Great list! I love turn based games and Like a Dragon, Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Persona 5 Royal are some of the best out there. Also Chained Echoes was insanely good, I need to go back and finish that one.
Always happy to see one of your videos pop up on my feed. - just bought like a dragon and can't want to play it. Everyone talks about how amazing it is. - DQ11 is the first and only DQ I've ever played. Definitely enjoyed it. - I really need to get BD2. Looks so good. I played the first and loved it. Love me some job systems. - I never played the original Mario RPG but I want to get the new one. Love timed button presses in combat. - sea of stars is one of my favorites RPGs of the last few years. It and rise of the third power. - Tokyo mirage sessions looks really fun. You and Taylor from the gaming shelf both sing it's praises. - I bought the physical copy of chained echoes and it's STILL NOT OUT so I haven't played it. I bought sea of stars physically too and they gave me a digital code so I could play it while waiting for the physical version.... - I wasn't a huge fan of SMT V. It was fun enough but the manufactured frustration of not enough slots for demons and the bleak landscape and weird bangs of the protagonist (I know I'm weird but wow does it look dumb to me) made it so I put it down after 10-15 hours - I really need to get Octopath 2. I loved the first. - I played my first persona game this year and that was 4 golden. I immediately asked for 5 Royal and got it for Father's Day and it is high up on my backlog so I'll play it this year Great video my dude
Man I waited too long on Chained Echoes. Finished Sea of Stars yesterday and thought I'd be starting Chained Echoes today but it was removed from Game Pass unbeknownst to me. Got Mario RPG last week so starting that.
Fun list, good calls. Saw you mention you're going through the Trails series already too (Reverie probably my 2nd favorite turn based jrpg, behind P5R) One more i'll throw your way in case you haven't heard of it: Blue Reflection: Second Light, developed by Gust (Atelier series). Very much up the alley of Tokyo Mirage Sessions/P5
A good list. Personally I would add the really relaxing Atelier series from GUST to them (my favorites are the Mysterious series and in particular Atelier Sophie 2).
Great list got a couple more to get now. Been on the fence about bravely default 2 and Toyko mirage sessions but I might try them out now. I just bought like a dragon and I’m keen to play that soon.
I really reallly liked almost the entirety of DQ11, but I swear as much as I try I just can’t get past the battle song, the gnawing feeling in the back of my head from knowing that it’s not going to change ever kills me
"thinking" is the problem for most modern gamers. They dont want that, they want to go go go. Pokemon doesnt help either, being devoid of real tactics or thinkkng you justbuse your best move over wnd over.
I’m making my way through them now but haven’t made it to the more modern games yet. Just getting started with the cold steel games now. So far they are some of my all time favorite games, I love Trails!
@@paoloadvento3713 Thanks! I’ve made it through trails in the Sky, Zero and Azure. About to start the first Cold Steel. These games are incredible. In fact, many of my other lists on the channel have Trails games in them.
@@slam-zany You are in for a treat. While I really liked the Sky and Crosbell games (I still think they are the best), the Cold Steel games are really good. Personally I found Cold Steel III and IV the best of them, but tastes differ about that. Trails Into Reverie is a grand finale of all the previous games, and an incredibly well made one. And of course we get a complete new start of a arc in Calvard coming summer with Trails Through Daybreak...
Like a dragon is great but it’s not balanced and way to difficult from chapter 12 to 15 it’s basically near impossible unless you grind a lot and it’s just not fun
Persona 5 gameplay is so boring to me, all you do is use the correct element and spam it for finisher attacks Yakuza 7 is way too easy and when it finally stops being easy it becomes grindy Dragon quest 11 is the only good one of the 3
gotta say I grimaced when I saw Sea of Stars (one of the shallowest battling systems I've ever played) over DQ11 (my favorite game) and BDII (Bravely has one of the best turn-based systems ever imo, despite the flaws of the series), but the rest of it was really good. Persona/SMT just have a great turn-based system, Octopath... I really don't like it but the system is extremely well-tuned..., and Chained Echoes is INSPIRED!
Are you even a jrpg fan if you don't like Octopath games though? 🤔 2 is one of the best jrpg games that's ever been made, and CotC at this point has surpassed it in almost every way
@@mrp1234 2 is definitely a big step up from 1. Can't wait to see what they have in store for 3. And as I mentioned CotC is even better than 2. More story content, more complex combat, more challenging content, and despite 2's OST being amazing... Cotc's is even more extensive and has as many bangers, if not more, at this point. And we haven't even got the Solistia story arc yet in global that jp has been working on It also fills in some plot stuff from 1 that they didn't answer, like what happened to Finis. In cotc you learn how and why he died, and who killed him. And the motivations of said person

Tokyo Mirage Sessions! We got a list with this game on it finally! This game is such a hidden gem. Props to you for giving it some love.
I love that game as well so I am happy it finally got the appreciation it deserves.
I agree. I was pleasantly surprised by that game.
Love that game. It's a shame it will never come to the PC. If it was sold on Steam or GOG it would find even more people who would like it.
Octopath 2 was goty for me 100% also I love Tokyo mirage sessions.
Yo your taste in games is right up my alley. Tokyo Mirage Sessions, SMT V, and Chained Echoes. This is a great turn based list.

I just managed to pick up Toyo Mirage Session from a black friday sale at my local game store. Playing it now and currently loving it.

Thanks! Definitely give Tokyo Mirage Sessions a try. It’s really great and heavily slept on in my opinion.
Thanks for the list and not including strategy turn based games. I'll give Bravely Default 2 a try.
Persona 5 Royal is in my Top 5 VideoGames of All Time
The business sidegame of Like a dragon is SUPER addictive
It really is haha

At least it’s on sale.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition
star ocean 2R would been number 2 but its action based lol
Still a jrpg tho. Was my 2nd favorite game of 2023 behind only ot2
In terms of gameplay smt5 stands alone at the top but yeah the story does make it slid down a little, a shame

Sea of Troons was garbage.
Honkai Star Rail needs to be on this list
If you're putting one gacha on there, cotc would need to be too since it's even better than Octopath 2
I know the term "modern" can simply mean, "it was released recently", but that's not what most people think of. 2D games are not "modern".
When they have better stories and characters and soundtracks than 3D games they definitely are modern
