So glad to see love for XVI on here. Such an amazing game and a true Final Fantasy, despite what some say. Just finished my Ultimaniac mode S runs. The difficulty is there for people who want to get everything there is out of the deceptively deep combat.
I still have to try Yakuza : Like a Dragon. I remember putting it aside when it came out but I never had the time to play it. Thanks for reminding me of that crazy fun game! By the way a video idea if you find it interesting, what non-JRPG games you wish were JRPG-like or you think would be cool as JRPG? For ex: God of War in DQ XI style. Or something like that, that would be fun
Good video! My only disagreement is FF16. Not hating on the game and I agree with all your assessment of the game. I could see it on a list for “JRPGs for people who don’t like JRPGs” because it is so light on what I think are core JRPG mechanics, I don’t think the newcomer to the genre would get enough of an experience to judge whether the might vibe with other JRPGs. I don’t think it is a bad game, just not representative enough to be in the introduction to the genre category. Just an opinion to add to the conversation.
Thank you for your insight and kind words! I agree it is lacking a lot of the core mechanics. It does however do great at the lore, world building and story that make the genre so beloved for me and that’s why I felt ok adding it in.
I have been wanting to try out the NnK Remaster (also need to play NnK2), but the main thing I hoped they fixed in the Remaster was shutting up Drippy a great deal. I remember really liking the game when it first released, but I still associate how annoying Drippy was! As for Final Fantasy, regarding your favorite, FFX, I _highly_ recommend newcomers to FFX to get the Remaster on PC so they can use the Japanese audio with English subs. I tried playing FFX probably ten different times throughout the time it released in 2001 through last year (2023), and each time I felt the English VA was so atrocious that I couldn’t ever make it longer than 3-4 hours in… but when I got the Japanese VA, It improved the game SO MUCH and I _finally_ got to experience that amazing game after wanting to love it for over 20 years!
@@slam-zany I agree! I just wish I had gotten there sooner... the English voice acting always just felt very poor and unsettling to me -- despite the fact that I'm almost never the type to prefer Japanese audio over English. I'm glad I could finally see what all the hype was about, though :)
agree with quite a few of these, though I've gotta say a couple of comments: - Ni No Kuni is maybe my least favorite game and it's specifically because the gameplay is absolutely agonizing imo. I would not recommend it to anybody but definitely not newcomers lol they will throw the controller across the room. I know the sequel gets shit on but I'm actually its biggest fan and definitely think it's super approachable. - FFXVI... I actually like it but I agree it feels so... and I'm sorry for the discourse... not like Final Fantasy that I wouldn't recommend it as someone's first FF game. I actually think 10 would be a fine start. the turn-based stuff is pretty straightforward there. - I also feel like FF7R is in such conversation with the original that I would not recommend it to someone who doesn't know it. and DEFINITELY not Rebirth without playing both the original game AND the remake part 1. - this list is already a bit ARPG heavy but I might take out one of the ARPGs you mentioned for either the Star Ocean 2 remake - it is fun from start to end and so easy to completely snap the game in two no matter what builds and characters you go with, so you feel smart and like you're making real progress - or something like Ys VIII. - Octopath II? it's got all the stuff people loved about the first one but it isn't a grindy and annoying nightmare like it. you can chill in the world and with the characters as much as you want. - DQXI? a very nice intro to turn-based games. the only reason I might not recommend this to a newbie is because it's long. - Chrono Trigger! - UO is a great choice and you really wouldn't /think/ it would be either because it has so much going on. FE Awakening or yes FE3H are also a good intro to SRPGs.
@@mrp1234 thanks for the comment, and I agree X and Chrono Trigger would be great, but this video is specifically trying to go for Modern JRPGs. I actually think Ni No Kuni’s gameplay is fun. While it’s not the best, I think it does a good job of easing players in. I initially wanted DQ11 on here but it’s a very long game and while I think its mechanics are really well suited for beginners, it takes a while to really get going. I love your opinions there though and look out for a list recognizing the older JRPGs for newcomers!
Good list but p5r will be better than p3r for newcomers bcs the dungeons arent one note. My sister and I are bored so far and the characters just kinda exist and there's no plot yet
Good video but completely disagree about FFXVI. No strategy at all, it's just button smashing and waiting for CDs. If it was called DMC we would call it an action game, people call it Rpg coz it's a FF,that's all. I felt God of War was more of an rpg than FF XVI sadly.
This is a really great video. So many on the list I still need to get to. Visions of Mana, Unicorn Overlord, and Ni no kuni are all on my list.
I agree Visions of Mana looks great. Hoping to get it on sale soon.
If you like tactics games unicorn overlord is a can’t miss
I’m playing through Metaphor right now and loving it but adding a few of these to my backlog. Thanks for the recommendations!
Have fun!
Great List, and thanks for explaining why these are good for new ppl instead of just saying the games are great!
Solid list, Slam! Agreed that Pokemon is perfect for newcomers to JRPGs! Same with Mario RPG!
Thanks for the recommendations I could’ve used a video like this when I got started!
A lot of these games are in my backlog, trick is learning how to get around to them😂
That’s always the hardest part

Love this video. These are great choices!
Thanks!! Glad you like them.
Unicorn Overlord! Incredible game and if it wasn’t for Metaphor it would be my GOTY.

YS!!!
I tell everyone who wants an absolutely insane story to try Ys VIII, it was wiiild with the storyline. But YS IX is my fave.
Just the video I needed!
Recently I started Persona 5 Royal and it has been truly amazing!
Royal is one of my all time favorite games. I hope you’re enjoying it!

I have friends that only plays action games and moba, it was much easier for me to get them to play ni no kuni instead of chrono trigger or octopath.
