I think it should've also been mentioned that Dragon Quest (1986) came before Final Fantasy (1987). It should also be noted that DQ kickstarted the Turn-based JRPG genre we know today, paving the way for the creation of all the other turn-based console JRPGs that spawned due to it's success (Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Mother/EarthBound, and so on).
For context, and this is something I need to be reminded frequently because I forget, Dragon Quest 3 and Final Fantasy 1 came out around the same time.
I am on my 30's and as a kid I grew up with final fantasy popularity. It's correct to say final fantasy made turn base popular throughout the world and not dragon quest.
@@adlibconstitution1609 Sure, but Final Fantasy owes it's existence to Dragon Quest, which made turn-based JRPGs popular in Japan. They both contributed something important to gaming history, so I'm not trying to diss FF or anything.
The Legend of Heroes first game (which oddly enough is not called The Legend of Heroes yet is the same series) Dragon Slayer 1 predates all of this however.
4:54 The Velvet Room is based on the Cathedral of Shadows from the mainline SMT games, which itself is based on the Heretic Mansion from the first two Megami Tensei games (though the SNES remake of them replaced the demon who ran the mansion with Mido, the minister who runs the cathedral in the numbered SMT games and the first Majin Tensei game). Although SMTV instead has the World of Shadows and Majin Tensei II instead has the REMIX Station.
@@cooltwittertag Action RPG and RPG might as well be too different genres with how dissimilar they are. RPGs aren't just turn based, but its a genre that requires some form of limitation on direct control of the characters in order to foster strategy over brute reflexes. If you can dodge roll and have 100% control of your character, then it's not an RPG. Xenoblade is an RPG, for example, but Final Fantasy XVI isn't.
@@Jordan3DS you are describing strategy games now. All RPG means is that its a role playing game. The gameplay mechanics need to foster role playing (immersion through customization and upgrading your character). They do not need to be strategic or turn based. Game genres have an image problem because just like indie they are applied very broadly.
@@cooltwittertag That hasn't been what the genre is solely about for decades now. Look at games like Paper Mario: Sticker Star. You have zero customization or character growth, but it has RPG combat so it's still an RPG. Likewise, something like Nier has levels and weapons you can equip but it's much more of an action game than an RPG. Through your definition, the genre is incredibly broad and basically has no meaning. It's like saying "Action games are just games that need to have a lot of action in them, so therefore Super Mario Sunshine is an action game!" I think you should have an idea of how a game plays based on its genre. If you label both something like Strangers of Paradise and Octopath Traveler solely as RPGs because they both have character customization, you're ignoring the fact that the experiences they provide aren't similar in the slightest. Whereas if you label a game a first person shooter, you have a solid idea of how the game plays and what it's like. On that note, imagine calling Zelda an FPS because you can go into first person and shoot the bow sometimes, it's just silly.
I’d say most Fire Emblem games are not standalone, but most can be played this way. Just do not play (New) Mystery or Radiant Dawn first (and Thracia spoils some of Genealogy). That Legend of Heroes explanation felt very safe which is fair lmao I’m surprised the gameplay wasn’t mentioned? Not only does the world expand each game, but technology is constantly progressing and this is shown best through the gameplay changes every new game.
FE3 has a retelling of FE1 and is thus an entirely valid starting point(At least if one can swallow the beyond clunky UI experience that it shares with 1 and 2)
@@lpfan4491Honestly I like original Mystery way more than New Mystery. The inclusion of the FE1 remake is cool and the visuals look so much better than New Mystery.
@@Jordan3DS Valid, but it is fair to say that the UI of New Mystery was better. They had more than a decade and several more games of experience to figure out what worked and what didn't. It doesn't make Kris' role in the plot better though.
@@magnusprime962 I mean sure, you can definitely argue that. But I feel like a more modern UI still isn't worth the butt ugly graphics, the asinine OC additions, or the poor gameplay balancing of adding the weapon triangle into a game not originally designed for it. It's kind of like Persona 3 Portable, where they added party member control which was a huge plus, but in every other way it was a massive step back from the PS2 version and thus not worth playing even with such an amazing QOL improvement.
@@tbnwontpop8857True, but between current development for Konami of the upcoming Suikoden I and II remasters and the recent release of the spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle, it remains active and relevant despite the long gap since the last entry. I would have included it - but they definitely got most of the other popular JRPG series with at least three entries.
I should have said it as opposed to putting it in a text bubble but I tried to limit it to active series. I plan to make a follow up targeting retro series.
Went to watch, scanned the faces, didn't see Suikoden and saw the "advertised title". Immediately dismissed the video and no point watching. Just jumped in to see if anyone else commented on the lack of Suikoden and lo and behold it's at the very top.
Bruh, you all keep hating on the man. He made a very good video as an introduction for new Jrpg players. No vets like you. Some flaws but nicely done man. Hope you achieve the 20k, greetings from Argentina!
Good news is with Vengeance on all platforms, it has the opportunity to become much more popular. Plus, it already sold 500,000 copies in first three days which is good. Even Persona used to be niche until Persona 5 came along with 5 million sales. Unfortunately, a lot of people will never like SMT. It's dark, depressing, and often difficult. Those are selling points for me, but not most. Very few people under 30 years old had access to SMT games before Nocturne Remaster (2020) and SMT V (2021) on Switch. Exceptions are 3DS owners, and a few older titles on PS3 and PS Vita
While talking about Star Ocean, you could have also mentioned at the end of that segment that that series is actually connected, or was connected rather, to the Tales of Franchise due to Wolf team first working on ToP, getting disrupted by Namco and then leaving nearly completly with the whole team to create Tri-Ace with Enix (I might be wrong thereif Tri-Ace was created after but it's been a bit messy there) as a publisher so the reason why there are some similiar beats and themes and say cooking and other specifics that are usually very unusual in the RPG genre come up, then it is because of their relationship to the Tales of Franchise in the 90s.
This is probably my favorite video on TH-cam,no joke, pretty much highlighted all the major franchises i love dearly from Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei, Legend of Heroes, etc.
Another aspect of the Tales series is how its plots tend to be built around a specific concept, theme, or trope...which the plots then suddenly (and sometimes rather brutally) deconstruct.
@@perlichtman1562 Could be a part 2 of a continuing series of videos? That said, nice simplified breakdown for beginners looking for a quick overview of the individual series. Good job in doing so.
For what it's worth, Wild Arms is #58 on Wikipedia's list of Best-selling Eastern RPG franchises. Sales don't mean everything, but there's simply a lot of good JRPG series
I LOVE ATLUS! Etrian Odyssey is my most favourite DS Series and I have been in love with SMT since the Digital Devil saga! And Persona is just amazing, I spend most days and nights binging through Palaces after dungeons after dungeons. ALSO! I love this video, as someone who played most of what you´ve shown, it is amazing how gave an overview of the games in a detailed yet quick manner and showing the viewers new games they might enjoy!
Have you played Persona 1 and 2? If not then definitely check them out! It's funny because years ago I didn't like Etrian Odyssey because it had no story and you created your own party, but a few years back I tried the series out again and fell in love with it! Easily the best dungeon crawler franchise ever
Such a great video, anyone mulling over which JRPG they should start with should start with this vid! Some relevant series you missed: -Drakengard/Nier -Digimon World -Rune Factory -Yakuza/Like a Dragon
Great intro! Heres one more: bravely default series. Great character, great combat system, expansive class system, great voice acting, standard but satisfying story with some great plot twists
All around a good summary of the franchises, nice work. I would've just recommended you put "active JRPG franchise" in the title as it would be a mostly clearer picture of the video, I say mostly because as much as I love Valkyria Chronicles I think we can sadly consider it done at the moment, as other comments mentioned the Mana series would've been a better candidate for it's place.
You gotta play nocturne bro, I know smt looks super bleak and depressing but I enjoyed smt nocturne a lot more than persona 5 royal. Smt is a, make your own fun series lol
8:40 well actually.. the travel log you tlak about is also a more modern feature of the Ys series. Infact, it wasn't a thing pre Ys 7 iirc, where the storyline was always revolving around the Eldeen and how they disappeared from the surface, which led Adol ever since the first game around to look to help the people he mets along the way, from simple retrieving of some jewelry, to some flowers up to silver bells or rings and wands that let you transform for example into a Roo for puzzle solving for example (and or worldbuilding) or casting magic that helps Adol on his journey. As much as I am happy you mention the somewhat known bump combat: I kinda wish you had mentioned the pre team fight oriented hack & slash titles in the series, aka the ark engine or three swords combat titles which are Ys 3's remake, Ys 6 - Ark of Napisthim and Ys Origin, which also appear different to people due to the difficulty being quite higher in compare to what modern Ys games do to the player as modern combat, even on the highest difficulty setting, is either getting oneshotted or wannabe-Dark Souls, sadly (which happened due to the target demographic group being changed as the originally PC focused company Falcom has gone into console game development due to japan's economy not really doing them any favors, see ZWEI2's poor sales for such an astonishing well crafted charming RPG where you also play as two characters basically at once).
6:30 A quick note for those interested in the Fire Emblem series; not every entry is standalone. There are some sequels, prequels, and even a midquel. Most are designed so that you can play them on their own, but if you want to play Game 4, Genealogy of the Holy War, unspoiled you should wait to play Game 5, Thracia 776, until afterward. The same goes for playing Radiant Dawn before Path of Radiance. If you want to avoid spoilers for older games in general you should wait to play the most recent entry, Engage. It was meant to be an anniversary celebration, so it pulled characters from across the series and explained their stories. This video's broader point about the series is mostly accurate; I just wanted to warn newcomers about the exceptions.

His description provides an explanation for his intent and goals in this video (if you wouldve read it). He made a good video summarizing a large chunk of the most popular jrpgs ever made for beginners. If you want a video giving information that anyone could get from a quick google search about games from your list (quite a few of which are more than fairly niche, haven't received a new installment for many newcomers entire lifespans, or never received much critical acclaim in the first place) then make your own video where you won't make abhorrent mistakes like putting a character who appears in a game series in said series' portrait.
Kind of wish you didn’t just include Xenoblade. The Franchise started way back with Xenogears in 1998. Then after that we had Xenosaga on the PS2 between 2002-2006. Also Xenoblade wasn‘t meant as a Xeno titles originally but later Games leaned more into it. While all 3 Xeno series are owned by different companies, they‘re still sort of connected and most players consider them as one large Franchise Also SMT wasn‘t the first Monster collector and the beginning of the series, it was Atlus’ Megami Tensei on the Famicom (NES) which was based on a trilogy of Novels. SMT released a few years later and then became the cornerstone of the larger Megami Tensei Franchise (the Shin in Shin Megami Tensei literally meaning „True“)
Yeah for this kind of informational video, I agree on the Xeno terminology. At the same time, Xenoblade Chronicles is responsible for about 74% of Xeno series sales and there's been no good Xenosaga games for 20 years. There are simply too many newer 100+ hour JRPGs to play and especially for people under 30 years old, anything older than Xenoblade Chronicles is a hard sell so I can understand not even mentioning it
@@EhurtAfy I mean, I‘m under 30 and played both Xenogears and the Xenosaga Trilogy. But most casual players probably won‘t go the extra mile of emulating or even buying the pre-Blade Xeno Games. Which is a big reason why I want HD Remasters or Remakes of Xenogears and the Xenosaga Trilogy
Xenogears/saga and blade are not the same franchise, Xenogears was made by Squaresoft, Xenosaga was primairly made by Namco, which is why they own the series to this day, Namco sold monolith to Nintendo where they made a new series using the Xeno-name, they are not connected in any way, other than some money they paid to Namco to use KOS-MOS name and likeness. Basically, they are not a franchise.
@@Magik_Cloud495 that’s true, as much as I love persona replaying it now over the age of 20 is a bit different then i remember, still love it though. And there’s no denying the Japanese/asian market much prefers the high school setting.
I wasn't expecting it to be brought up since it's pretty obscure in the US, but Super Robot Wars is a long running SRPG franchise like Fire Emblem. SRW features various mecha series in each game and has them cross over with each other with some original characters to create a new story. The most recent mainline release, 30, was released on Steam, and it alongside V, X, and T were also released on PS4 and Switch in Asia, but they all have official English translations.
The Bravely Series: Bravely Default Bravely Second Bravely Default II Default 1 and Second are 3Ds games that have 1 story while Default II is on the Switch and is its own self contained story. Their combat system is genuinely incredible with you being able to save and spend multiple turns.
Disappointed that Atelier Resnalina, the latest title, was not mentioned either. People think it’s just some side-mobile gacha game but it’s actually considered to be a main-line game unlike Nelke (which also isekai’d various Atelier characters to its universe.) Storyline picks up during the Weltex arc (which is where EN is on) and I hear it gets better from there.
Here's a series of vaguely connected games called the Department haven series With four games in total it would really benefit from a video like this since it's very niche even by JRPGs standard Those titles are quite unique and very hard compared to genre contemporary my favourite game is Knights in the nightmare I'm certain you won't find something like it
All the games have banger music Knights in the nightmare is my favourite Sorry for the late response hope you read it it's not every day I come across a fan of department heaven fan
Ohhhh, tell me how you really feel about Pokemon. 😂 10:27 Great video! You did an awesome job detailing the core elements of these great JRPG franchises. 😁
Great video, just one correction on Valkyria: You don't play as the Gallian Militia in every game. In Valkyria 2 you take control of students a Military Academy, Valkyria 3 you play as an offshoot unit consisting of convicts and undesirables to take on seemingly impossible missions and in Valkyria 4 you play as the Federation during Operation Northern Cross
I really wish Disgaea spin-off games had their own category. They take on completely differently art styles yet love to reference the Disgaea series or even straight up have Crossover characters from the Disgaea series enter their games. You’ll definitely find some underrated gems like Phantom Brave, Soul Nomad, Phantom kingdom, The witch and the hundred knight, etc
Cool video. Very succinct and good for new comers. That's quite the ambitious title though. With so many fantastic JRPG series out there, it's a large undertaking to cover them all comprehensively in a short amount of time (notable omissions: Breath of Fire, Secret of Mana, Suikoden, etc). However, you did a great job for what you did cover. Well done.
Final Fantasy IV (GBA or PSP versions) is a great RPG to start with for beginners. I recommend that over basically anything else. You can easily emulate it on a smartphone or PC.

Legend of Heroes Trails series is probably one of the only two (correct me if I'm wrong) series that is still running and continuing besides from Kingdom Hearts. A very long series to get into if you want to understand the whole story of different characters/perspective/continents in the same world. Like a really long anime with 500+ episodes that is still going and going and going. Iirc, the current installment (12th installments) just hits the 50% of the overall story, according to the game designer. And your breakdown of it was so... short and somehow precise 😂 It's my favorite series though.
At least Trails has an end in sight tho maybe within the next 5 years or so if what Kondo said the series is at 90% completion with Kai no Kiseki is true, Kingdom hearts just keeps going lmao
Marketing maybe? The newest origin collection comes with persona characters portraits. Also, there is no single most iconic character in the series anyway, so using Aegis' portrait is a sensible idea to attract more people.
Greay video! Alot of the info was surface level but these rpgs have so much detail that its hard to fit it all into 15 min lol. For a general idea of them? I thought it was great!
Great video. Still, I imagine it's quite difficult to come up with these lists. Many games may be overlooked like DrakeNieR (if you count those games a JRPG), the Mana series, Bravely Default and even forgotten ones like Golden Sun, Wild Arms, Phantasy Star, Summon Night... and the list goes on 😅
The Mana series is fairly obscure with a cult following. It started as an action based Final Fantasy like before it transitioned into its new identity. All games have a plot surrounding a limited supply of mana, a tree that supplies the mana, a sword that acts as the conduit, someone dying by the end, usually a girl as a sacrificial offering, monsters that look cuddlier than basic Kirby enemies, and later on up to eight elements including the obscure moon and wood ones. Some earlier games featured local multi-player, spinoffs were hit-or-miss experimental variations of the usual formula, and the music is usually good on the ears overall. When Secret of Mana was being made, limited cart space led to alot of stuff being cut and pit into either the sequel or Chrono Trigger.
@@Jordan3DS I was refering to the aesthetic and the references, right down to picking a stat change named after an FF1 class. The Dark Lord had the dark knight look. Julius' adventurer disguise was a red mage. Chocobos were still rideable in that game. You picked the stat buffs' Warrior Monk, Black Mage, and White Mage. The main character is basically the FF warrior in appearance and way of fighting. Until you get magic.

Imagine calling Etrian Odyssey a "major" JRPG Franchise, especially when your list excludes Pokemon, Yakuza, and the Souls series. Im pretty sure even the Hyperdimensional games are more popular than Etrian games.
Not a single image of the Famicom version of all those games ? Awwwwwwww, it's so satisfying to see them be more and more beautiful as the script is told.

Honestly a good rundown of the major ongoing JRPGs. I think the Kiseki section was a bit short, not even a description of the combat system was provided, but I guess that shows how the big appeal of the series is the interconnected story rather than the gameplay. Also, just seeing this list and not seeing series like Summon Night or Golden Sun makes me sad. Not cause the video didn't include it, but that it's practically dead franchises. I especially thought Golden Sun had the potential to go far.
In your Persona section, you may have forgotten to mention that 3, 4, 5 play differently than Persona 1 and the duology of Persona 2, otherwise its a great video. I would love to see another one of these.

Likewise, something like Nier has levels and weapons you can equip but it's much more of an action game than an RPG.
Through your definition, the genre is incredibly broad and basically has no meaning. It's like saying "Action games are just games that need to have a lot of action in them, so therefore Super Mario Sunshine is an action game!"
I think you should have an idea of how a game plays based on its genre.
Yeah Suikoden series feels like a huge omission from this list, otherwise you got most of the popular jrpgs out there.
I think this list is largely comprised of currently ongoing series and to my knowledge Suikoden has been shelved since the mid 2000s.
@@tbnwontpop8857True, but between current development for Konami of the upcoming Suikoden I and II remasters and the recent release of the spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle, it remains active and relevant despite the long gap since the last entry. Ys, Legend of Heroes and tales of series are beyond amazing
Thank you so much for talking about Disgaea! It's such a great franchise which unfortunately is very underrated. This series deserve more attention.

As a diehard FF and Persona fan, watching this video felt so good

@@Jordan3DS really? I just think the ending’s to the games have sucked the last few years lol, I want a happy ending, 16 had great combat lol

While all 3 Xeno series are owned by different companies, they‘re still sort of connected and most players consider them as one large Franchise
Also SMT wasn‘t the first Monster collector and the beginning of the series, it was Atlus’ Megami Tensei on the Famicom (NES) which was based on a trilogy of Novels.
@@boredgoddesstori6635 Agreed, yeah that'd be cool 👍
Xenogears/saga and blade are not the same franchise, Xenogears was made by Squaresoft, Xenosaga was primairly made by Namco, which is why they own the series to this day, Namco sold monolith to Nintendo where they made a new series using the Xeno-name, they are not connected in any way, other than some money they paid to Namco to use KOS-MOS name and likeness. Basically, they are not a franchise.

I would LOVE to see Super Robot Wars included in later parts!

In Valkyria 2 you take control of students a Military Academy, Valkyria 3 you play as an offshoot unit consisting of convicts and undesirables to take on seemingly impossible missions and in Valkyria 4 you play as the Federation during Operation Northern Cross
It's rather nice to see a video giving brief overviews about certain RPG series without cynicism or snark.
I really wish Disgaea spin-off games had their own category. They take on completely differently art styles yet love to reference the Disgaea series or even straight up have Crossover characters from the Disgaea series enter their games. I can't wait to finally see the next game!
Why is Aigis used as the portait for Etrian Odyssey?
Marketing maybe? The newest origin collection comes with persona characters portraits. Also, there is no single most iconic character in the series anyway, so using Aegis' portrait is a sensible idea to attract more people.

Was it meant to be a FF, though? In Japan the series was always its own thing

DQ always held a special place in my heart as a child. Rest In Peace, Akira Toriyama.
Nice video but you got your chart wrong at Tales. Tales of Symphonia 2 is not a mainline title but Tales of Innocence is.
In your Persona section, you may have forgotten to mention that 3, 4, 5 play differently than Persona 1 and the duology of Persona 2, otherwise its a great video. I would love to see another one of these.
What do you want for Persona 6? Another game like 3-5 or more of a regular RPG like 1 and 2?
YS SERIES PEAK thank you for mentioning it
Hell yeah, can't wait for Ys X!
You forgot to say that xenoblade has born from the team behind of the Xenogears and Xenosaga games. It is a good trivia for players that want to experience more of the series :D
Kiseki & Ys (Broadly speaking, Falcom) mention, based as all hell
I literally lol'd when you got to Pokémon 🤣
