  • The McLaren 600LT is brilliant, isn't it? Everyone says so. Why then, are there thirty of them currently for sale in the UK. New ones are still in stock at huge discount, so what went wrong for this award winning car?

      I think they all look too similar. LT? I couldn't tell you if it was or wasn't an LT. Is the LT some sort of sticker pack, couldn't tell you if it was a 675MP4321C either. Is it a P1, no, is it an F1, no? Meh, I can't tell the difference AND I don't even care. Not saying this to insult the car, I'm pointing out how anticlimactic the lower end cars are. It's not snobbery for the top most expensive model either. I love a 458 and up, a Huracan, a GTC4 Lusso, etc.. The designs are too soft, the interiors remind of a Tesla. I think they all need more quirks and gimmicks. Something to make them stand out from each other and the rest of the pack. More angry look too.

      Agree. Most super car manufacturers tend to have a 4-8 year product cycle, before a new model is introduced. In little under 10 years McLaren have had so many models and variants. The gap between the 12c and 720s is relatively short, compared to say the Gallardo and Huricane. Need time to let the cars appreciate. I'm guessing they approach road cars the same way they approach F1 production: if the technology has improved or advanced they will immediately introduce it into their cars.

      I have a 720S performance coupe. I’ve put about 4800 miles on it trouble free with no weird trips required to the dealer. Reliability is on par with every other Exoctic car I’ve had or currently have in the garage. Customer service is hit or miss depending on the dealership. The Mclaren Charlotte guys are top notch! Depreciation...well it sucks. My advice is don’t buy them new, let someone else take the initial depreciation hit. That said, I don’t see the point of spending this type of money for an Exoctic car that sits in the garage. It’s an over priced toy that’s going to lose value over time, might as well enjoy it. Unless it’s a limited edition car, they all, regardless of brand, are going to depreciate. If you’re buying these cars for an investment or some financial gain, would suggest you reconsider your personal wealth strategy. Value is ultimately subjective, the value for me is the enjoyment I get out of it.

    • @DonLee1980
      @DonLee1980 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Omar-te1pp It's not a road legal GT4 car. The GT4 car has only around 400-450hp, weighing at 1500kg, much heavier and less power than the road car. You can't seriously be thinking that Mclaren didn't purposely boost the power and performance just enough to go higher than the 600lt, but not enough to scare the 720s. For god sakes, they made a 650s 6 years ago. They can easily pump 650hp from that engine. The only factor this car has over the other road cars, is it's readily able to fit slick tires for track use. The other road mclarens don't allow you to, (if you want your warranty still).

The feedback, steering, chassie, seating position, steering wheel, power gearbox, doors, exterior and exterior design are all individually better than in anything else i've ever driven before not to mention all in the same car. The only thing that its lacking is a more exotic and screaming tone of the exhaust, its good but not at the level of a GT3, non turbo Ferrari or the Lambo V10 in the R8 (even with titanium straight pipes with 200 cell cats on the McLaren). Just before the lockdowns I was at full day test drive of the new Ferrari F8 Tributo, I really like Ferrari but that just confirmed to me how much i love my McLaren and how it speaks to the driver.

    Jay, you have a valid point in the real world, that is one with plenty of people who try to milk TH-cam monetisation and quickly moving through cars like they were picking up a new girl in a club each week-end. And true, McLaren aren't good at the game of building the drama, playing mind games, la-di-da. However from the days of Ron Dennis, they never particularly set out to play that game, hence why the car "only" comes with alcantara carpet and yellow belts. As a purist I think that's fantastic, it's way more pure than any Huracan that looks out of Ridge Racer and it's a closer reminder of cars like the 997 GT3 ClubSport or RS. Now regarding having some stock of cars or not limiting numbers, this can be different from country to country. Personally I think it's great that you can buy the car without the stupidity of people buying them to "flip" them. That's such a stupid lame way to make money, seriously people should just go and get a real job at the Royal Mail sorting office, do something useful rather than being a parasite. For example in USA certain buyers change their mind if they have to wait too long for a car, the new-school is very impatient. Limiting numbers has been a popular gimmick recently with any model and I actually APPLAUD Porsche once they decided they were just going to mess around with manual gearboxes as well just to shake it up for those losers who buy cars like buying gold. Even Warren Buffet says that the only true appreciating assets are stocks and shares of industrial goods that generate growth. Sure the 288 GTO etc were built in ltd numbers but at the time that was in keeping with the fact that early Ferraris (think 166M) were always build in the hundreds and had various carrozzerias doing different versions. Now I'm sure Ford will even build its S-Max "Vignale" in Limited numbers just to create some new product line to get buyers to "invest".
    My 3 or 4 take-aways:
    1) It's perfectly legit to dislike all the Shmees and JWW out there for wanting to make a quick buck as an alternative to Henry Catchpole or Dickie Meaden. Sorry guys, you can buy cars but you can't buy professionalism and a touch of down to earth class
    2) Building and buying cars to stock like gold bullion or for boasting or just general "look me, I wear a Vacheron and own a ltd edition Senna" is wasting people's time. You can do it but cars are engineering machines made to be driven
    3) nobody should give a monkey's if a 600LT or GT3 is ltd numbers or not. Sure, it devalues the car price, but it makes no difference to its merits. As Tiff Needell once said when driving the Zonda R, "They should have government-run Zondas". Ok yes then people would not think they're special...
    4) The LT is an excellent car and hats of to Antonio Gonzales and the team who developed the dynamics (plus all the engineers who developed the other models leading to it, Mattia Saluzzo with Chris Goodwin and Leonardo Altieri and many more)
    5) not aimed at anyone here or to JayEmm but aimed at countless annoying youtubers: if you didn't buy an LT you're not a good enough driver for it, you don't put your money where your mouth is, you're in it purely for short term gain and most of all people shouldn't be wasting time watching that content.
    Jay, love your videos. Keep it up. Your viewpoint is always appreciated and worth watching every single time. Happy driving mate! Ciao.

    17:52 Monotone sound? What monotone sound? I love that high pitched wail of these modern McLaren V8 exhaust sounds ever since they were introduced in the 675LT. I could go as far as saying this car sounds just like a 675LT 😲 Spine tinglingly exciting - for a turbocharged V8 engine.

    • @edtheduck6219
      @edtheduck6219 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the McLaren and Ferrari V8s are not bad as such, just missing that V8 sound you get with Audis, Lambos, Bentleys, Astons, etc. It’s a bit characterless at low RPM and there’s plenty of noise higher up but it’s more a loud blare than music...

    Interesting what you say about the stock levels of McLaren cars. I was at a large prestige car storage facility last week and they had dozens upon dozens of unsold McLaren’s over two floors. They'd been there a while too showing dust on their clear plastic cover sheets and packed so tight over many hundreds of square metres of storage facility. I love the idea of a Mac and could get in to a lower model in the range but too many stories of TVR type niggles and over manufacture. At the price, no thank you.

    When you hear that people (who by the way love supercars) don't want to buy one of the greatest supercars you can probably get, only because it hasn't the "right" production number (or at least allegedly hasn't) something is very wrong with the mindset of these people. They confuse cars, which are something to enjoy, with stocks, which are there to invest into or speculate with.

    9:46 You say to "do your geo" if you own a McLaren. But what do you mean by that? How do you "do your geo(metry)?". Is it some kind of suspension adjustment? I own a 600LT and it does have a bit of understeer at low speeds. Can that be fixed?

    • @peterbett3076
      @peterbett3076 ปีที่แล้ว

      On road or track? Mine is a bit understeery on track but not really an issue on newer tyres. Normally when I start to notice understeer it’s because the inner shoulders of the front tyres are very worn. Give yours a check. The fairly extreme camber hides inner shoulder wear unless you turn the steering to full lock to check

    I'm not sure how true this is, but I vaguely remember someone saying that the 488 Pista Spider was a similar deal. They weren't limiting them to a particular number, just to a particular length of time for builds. McLaren have gone down the same route, without realising that they're not Ferrari. Ferrari will sell out and people will buy them because they're Ferrari. McLaren don't have that same level of heritage or prestige. They can't sell cars on reputation alone. They still have some work to do in all aspects of the business, it seems.
