  • Recently, my friend James and his father both bought brand new McLarens. Unfortunately, the experience was less than ideal and one of the cars wound up being replaced. Because you'll all know that doesn't normally happen, I thought you all deserved to know the truth about what happened, and so here it is.

Exactly the same happened to my Dad at BMW. He'd always wanted one - couldn't afford one. He was looking round a forecourt and dreaming when approached by a female sales assistant. He was totally upfront and said just that - he loved the cars but couldn't afford one. She grabbed a set of keys and my Dad got a half hour test drive. Same reasoning from the lady sales assistant.
"One day Sir if you are in a position to do so - you may consider BMW for your next car"
      THAT is customer service.

I've been treated extremely well by McLaren despite clearly not being a customer, in both Geneva Motor Show and Monaco dealer. Welcoming and informing people; long conversations with sellers. They took their time to talk with a passionate kid. McLarens are also the only supercar manufacturers that open their booths at International Motor Shows : Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari are customers only, and Porsches are like "yeah you can get into the Cayenne, Panamera and Boxter but you have to be invited to get close to the GT3". This whole thing shows that the brand isn't to blame, it is the local authority in charge. Other exemple, but my local Ferrari dealer always exposes incredible cars. Lately, a LaFerrari and a FXXK Evo have been on display. They welcome you, allow you to take pictures. A few months earlier, in the Monaco Ferrari dealer, you could barely get close to a V8 GTC4 Lusso without being looked at like a vendal...

The absolute unprofessionalism of MacLaren dealership is honestly baffling. I think making a ceremony for a customer, picking up his car is a bit cringe but that is maybe just me, but doing your best to make everything go smoothly and amicably goes without saying. My father bought a bloody Ford Kuga hybrid, not a cheap car but not nearly this expensive but the guys at Ford were very professional, helpful and on their own initiative threw in little things like carpets and equivalent of 200 pounds in free petrol as a gift. And car was spotless. His experience with his previous car, which was an Opel, was much worse (the sales person was snarky, unpleasant prick), so he was super happy.
I would expect at least this from MacLaren, these small niceties which cost them almost nothing but go a long way to please the customer. If Ford can do that, they should be able to do that as well.

The BMW dealer where I serviced my 3 series when I was living in Pretoria should write a manual on achieving customer satisfaction… They rolled out an actual red carpet when you just had your car services with them. The staff familiarized themselves with the name of each car’s owner beforehand and everyone addressed you by title and surname from the moment you set foot out of your car to drop it off for a service. The dealer manager did the rounds and spoke with every customer personally in their lounge whilst we waited to finish the paperwork and had coffee made for us.
They made me feel like I was buying an M8 competition when I just had my 320d serviced. I would travel from anywhere in the world to buy a car from them every time!

Some years back I came into a little money, not a fortune by any means, but I decided I would at last buy the car of my dreams since childhood, an S Type Jaguar, and even then it would have to be second hand. I visited my local Jaguar dealership and they happened to have a two year old 3:0 litre S Type that had just come in as a trade in, it was absolutely immaculate. I took it for a test run and that was it, the car was everything I could have hoped for and more. The point is though that from the moment I pulled up at the dealership I was treated like royalty, I could not have been treated with more respect and courtesy then if I was buying a brand new top of the range car, and that is how cars should be sold, and how buyers should be treated.

      @robmcinteer4247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Simply to play devils advocate just think of the position the McLaren dealer is put in by the factory. Firstly, if you were the dealership, you represent a performance and luxury brand vehicle that in this case costs $250,000, not an easy task.
Secondly you are keenly aware that these vehicles are not built to the reliability standard of other cars at this price point (this is just my opinion). While 20 years ago almost all exotic cars had this level of pedantic nature, almost all of them have rectified the reliability issues except McLaren.
Thirdly any dealership knows that if it caves on every warranty item that should be covered or paint chip that comes with delivery their business model would be in jeopardy. Add to that these are McLaren parts and labor costs, it puts the dealership in an awkward position
Lastly it’s hilarious McLaren “home office” comes in as the good guy and saves the day for their inferior, overpriced and unreliable product that a “sales corporation” they contract out to, has to deal with on a daily basis. Just don’t buy a McLaren you won’t have these problems.

It hard to not be upset with the brand when you end up with all these problems, especially with a quarter of a million (I'm guessing pounds sterling) spent to own the cars. They did the dealership a favor when they purchased a vehicle that had been on the lot for six or more months, I'd have rolled out he red carpet for someone brave enough to do that, knowing good and well they were doing me a service by purchasing old stock.

Because the factories behind them have been making reliable cars at all levels for over a century with incredible quality so no wonder their high end cars are the same!

I agree. When you're buying a car, and the dealer keeps pushing you to drive off in it and give back for repairs, is because you take delivery of the car technically by law when you drive off the lot and take ownership. Not when you sign the papers. There beds to be an actual exchange with intent shown and the last considers that to be the drive off. But I've you drive off the dealership no longer is incentivised to be in a rush for any repairs because they'll get their money from the bank by then. So within 3 days the money is sent to their Bank account and they're done and paid so why should they break their back fixing shit. But if you don't take delivery of the car they have no choice but to do what they said because the contract isn't actually sent to the bank (it it shouldn't be sent to the bank anyway even though some dealers go ahead and do it). You're available correct that I've would NEVER EVER drive off in a car from s dealership that has issues and is Told to "Come back later to get it fixed". Very very good one and I wish every single person who sees this video also sees your comment because s kit of people don't know that your statement is an absolute fact that could have them tons of money and time.

The problem is: McLaren can't be too picky about who they allow to sell their vehicles since there probably isn't that many car dealer "people" who are aching to be a McLaren dealer. You have to have really REALLY deep pockets to operate a car dealer in the first place and to be a niche market like a McLaren, even deeper still.
I was in the trade show business and did a lot of work with Jaguar Canada. In addition to their exhibits, we also had the mold for the leaper (the big chrome cat that stood on top of their pilons and on the facade). We got a call one day to show up at a Jaguar Dealer with a genie lift in order to remove the leapers. Seems Jaguar had enough of the BS dealer and had revoked their dealership licence and were removing all traces of their Jaguar brand from the property.

The incredible proportion of owners suffering from faults due to quality control failures and standard of service from dealers is appalling! McLaren Manchester very definitely deserve to go out of business, full stop! If Woking do not rapidly remove their franchise to eliminate this stain on the brand, I would be both shocked and very disappointed. You CANNOT run a successful business with employees/franchisees of this calibre. They should unquestionable get the boot - if only for McLaren's chances of survival!
Thank you for doing this video as, like you I'm a great admirer of the cars themselves, and don't want to see the marque die because of the abysmal quality of service by individuals who couldn't even achieve the standards of service found in a run-down McDonalds restaurant!

I think it's a bit too easy to blame the dealers. The dealers aren't the root problem. The root problem, is the absolute crap quality of work McLaren delivers to them. I can understand where a dealer, if he gets shitloads of cars with quality issues, over time, will start to protect himself, otherwise dealers will simply go out of business because McLaren keeps delivering total crap cars to them.
Keep in mind.. the service this dealer gave is terrible, and sure, this particular dealer simply deserves to go out of business. But the dealer is not the issue, McLaren is.
No doubt, if the dealer just reairs everything, McLaren won't pick up the bill for the work done, but will blame the dealer.

But you are totally right.. the dealer in this story is an ass. I just wanted to point out that it's not the dealer who's the root cause of the problem, it's McLaren. I enjoy all of your videos, but this was a very interesting watch, and certainly worth every minute. An incredible story very well told !

I would have gone absolutely nuclear if I was treated this way when buying my wife’s $30k Mercedes much less a $250k McLaren. What a clown show.

JayEmm on Cars perhaps the palavers with McLaren arises from being an independent company? Reckon they’d be better off bought and brought under the umbrella of car group conglomerate like say BMW Group. Look what’s it’s done for Rolls Royce and MINI.

This is a sad state of affairs. It really is. I have to regularly go fucking ballistic at companies after repeatedly giving them chance after chance to 'do it right' there comes a point where you just have to say right fuck this and go for the jugular. I am absolutely ruthless. I WILL get things resolved my way and to MY satisfaction. I care not what it takes. And when you do go there. Wow. Things happen FAST. But your 'the bad guy'. No. You created the mess and hence the monster you see before you. Don't like it? Don't create the situations that require him to come out and play. Play stupid games , win stupid prizes. There are very few companies who operate in a genuinely customer centric manner. Anything with with a switchboard and you are usually fucked. I try to buy as much stuff as I can from individuals for this reason. A lot of stuff though you are shit out of luck for.

There's 40min of my life I want back.
I kept waiting for something to make the time I spent watching this worthwhile, but it never happened.
This story should have ended after 2min with both sales being cancelled after the original delivery debacle.
You'd think that people with that much money would be smarter with how they spend it and would know how to read the signs for when you should walk away from a bad deal.

I have never bought an expensive car, but my family members have worked at high end dealers working in lowly positions, and this type of approach to customers is common
