The McLaren GT Review - Why It Failed, And Did It Deserve To?

  • In today's video I look at the rather odd McLaren GT - a car built from the same parts as many other McLarens, but with a different aim. Has it worked though and why have buyers not come for these like they did the 570GT?

    IT'S A SALAD TIM! 😤
    The more I see this car (in the show rooms) the more I fall in love with it. Maybe I'm getting old but I'm finding it more appealing, I'd still probably pick the 600LT given the chance!
    I hope in the future McLaren will make a proper GT car with it's own unique monocoque, the way they've reused the current one for the GT and Speedtail is rather ridiculous in my opinion.

    • @stephenw5628
      @stephenw5628 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I like everything about it except the front. The front looks like an mx5 or any other budget sports car rather than a high end GT car, plus its leading edge is way too high off the ground

    • @larssonk22
      @larssonk22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@stephenw5628 I see what you mean but with the day light running lights on it looks much better, and also the GT seems to be the most colour sensitive McLaren of them all, paint choice can really make it or break it (actually the Speedtail fits this category as well). For me the biggest exterior fault is the Senna like side air intakes, it doesn't suit the design at all from any angle.

    This is actually my favorite McLaren, if only because it looks less like an insect than their other cars. But obviously, McLaren has released far too many “different” but very similar models in too short a time. Almost all McLarens could be just different trim levels of the same model.

    I'm left with the suspicion that McLaren are simply building yet more slight tweaks of the same basic car, simply so that rich people will have more vehicles to store in their underground air conditioned vaults. They have, er, *how* many models in their range now? Which are basically indistinguishable in terms of performance, with the possible exception of the manic (and hideously expensive) McLaren Senna?
    At least if you collect Matchbox toys, you end up with manifestly different vehicles ...

      @@william_SMMA ... given that several of McLaren's models are under £200k to buy new, a £750K price tag for the Senna *is* hideously expensive to those outside of a rarefied financial stratum. Factor into the equation that in some markets, the car is now changing hands for MORE than its list price, and the comparison with McLaren's less expensive models puts things neatly into perspective.
      Admittedly this price tag pales in comparison with the likes of Koenigsegg and Bugatti, but those two companies are already operating on a different plane.

    A GT (especially from a niche manufacturer) needs to have a beautiful CLASSIC design in my opinion. Not many manage to do that. I'm also one of these people who wants a GT to have a front engine and a proper trunk. Calling it a salad might have actually worked better. You're approaching it from a different perspective. A more comfortable supercar is something many people could use, if you wanna have a McLaren but the 720S is too hardcore.

    My Top 3 Requirements for a Grand Touring Automobile. 1) Do the seats fully recline into a sleeping position, for scenic intoxicated napping, no motel value, and for long drives relaxing back. 2) Can the suspension handle the roughest of gravel/dirt roads getting to any destination on the map, while also with quick/fun sporty handling. 3) Is the cargo capacity large enough for a bicycle, camping gear, golf clubs, etc. Because that is what my $3500 Integra delivers, so anything less would be a downgrade.

Based on your review, I decided NOT to order the GT several years back when I had the opportunity (biding my time with my 2020 Aston Martin GT and then a 2023 911 Carrerra 4GTS cabriolet). However, last year, I decided that SALAD or NOT, I am going to and indeed ordered the 1st 2025 McLaren GTS in the United States (which landed in Baltimore last week). I will be picking it up in Dallas this week. I am hoping that McLaren addressed all of the issues that were problematic with the GT as I do love the look and specs of this car over all of the other McLarens. In fact, it will be first McLaren ever. Look forward to your review of the GTS soon and if you find yourself in the Dallas Texas area you are more than welcome to drive this one for your review. Three things any high end Grand Tourer needs.
    1: They need to look expensive, classy and elegant. To my eyes, the McLaren GT does not look expensive, classy or elegant.
    2: They need to be very smooth, refined and able to do long journeys without being taxing to drive. You just don't want an engine right behind you on any long motorway journey. Instead of going for convenience, just do what all the other manufacturers of grand tourers do and make it front engined.
    3: Space and comfort. They've elongated the body of a 570 GT, yet you would still have more space and comfort in an Aston Vanquish, an 812 SF, a Roma, any Bentley Continental or a Panamera Turbo S.
    What McLaren did here, was to produce yet another supercar, but one that will appeal to a more mature customer. People like genuine variety, not the same thing but with a reworked body. A proper grand tourer should drive and feel a million miles away from any supercar.

    *In my opinion, it's the best sports car currently on the market:*
    - It is light in weight at around 1500 kg, which means it is fast around corners.
    - It has a very nice interior.
    - It's not overly harsh to drive with comfort.
    - It has a nice sound system (Bowers & Wilkins) and good noise isolation inside.
    - It has tons of power, grip, and a superb acceleration (0-60 in 3 seconds).
    - It has a lot of trunk space for a sports car.
    - It has a proper steering wheel with paddle shifters rotating with the wheel - the proper way!
    - It is not too low in terms of ground clearance, and hassle-free on public roads with.
    - It doesn't have open slits (holes) on the rear windshield, and you can drive it when raining.
    - It has superb seats which are better than on most sports cars.
    - It is the car that means business unlike some exotics ($1-3 millions) that only sit in collections.
    The Ferrari Roma is almost as good as the McLaren GT but it would be a tiny tad heavier and less aerodynamic/less stable = a tad slower around the corners. It also has improper paddle shifters that don't rotate with the steering wheel. On the whole there's little difference between this GT and Roma. Both are superb but the McLaren GT is more appealing to me. Call me crazy but the Ferrari Roma has less comfort than the Jaguar F-type in my opinion. *And I would choose the F-type SVR over the Roma no matter how crazy I may sound!!!*

    It's true from your point of view that the marketing speak about the suspension wasn't quite accurate. The spec changed a bit during development so it might have started with the kinetic (side to side interconnect), but in reality the roll stiffness pressure control wasn't required (the 570GT doesn't have it either). The 12C and 720S have a Z-bar, whereas the cars without Kinetic have a more traditional setup which makes them a bit more 'sincere' in their handling for some drivers. The reason for the GT using dampers and software related to 720S was due to the ability of its algorithm to cope well with damping in roll pitch and diagonal directions in a relatively independent way, which is useful for things like pot-holes, speed humps etc. So the car definitely benefits from that compared to some other brands.
    Good review overall. It's better than many others. It does annoy engineers when some influencer just slams down a car because it's not as good as some other brand they've been fortunate to test, particularly when they have no idea of the equations involved in most of the ESP and stuff that saves them when their driving is sub-par. I refer readers to a quote from Freddy Mercury (a modestly successful singer/musician) in answer to music critics: " F**k em, what do they know about playing music anyway."
    Keep up the good work! Look fwd to further drives and reviews.

    I recall when I rented a 2019 570S Spider that there was an occasional knocking sound coming from the right side of the car. It was almost like a seatbelt buckle banging around but I did look in that area and found nothing. Perhaps it was part of the suspension.

    It's a compromise of a car, but one that I find appealing. I think it actually lives up to it's name quite well, its a McLaren in GT flavour. A full on GT would have lost everything that makes McLaren unique. It is a shame it isn't quite as easy to live with as marketed though.

I recommended this to him b/c I doubt anyone is just gonna let go of the R8 at this point without overcharging for it. The prices just keep going up for the AWD version.
    But this I like it. I saw a grey one last week. I saw a white one like 3 years ago, the owner own a row of stores. I've seen a green one somewhere and 2 other ones around Navy Yard. I'm assuming one of the Nationals baseball players have them.

    Two things that REALLY stood out to me when I drove it:
    1. The steering was absolutely spot on. In this segment (Ferrari, Aston, etc), the others aren't even close. Even when you start talking about the "sportier" versions like the F8 they don't have the same combination of feel and "pointability." They are venturing into Lotus territory with this one.
    2. Jay was it just me, or are they pedals incredibly close together? For whatever reason, on the day I was driving this car, I was wearing flip-flops (I know, I know). I actually had to take them off and drive in bare feet because my foot would cover both pedals otherwise and it was scaring the shit out of me.
    Otherwise, I thought it was a really, really fun car to drive. An absolutely gorgeous car to look at. The boot "space" is nice but the numbers they give you are somewhat irrelevant as it is basically linear space that is essentially on a display rack once you place it in there. Although there are anchors for tie-downs, anything one places in the bootspace (as you mentioned) simply becomes a projectile in any sort of sudden stop and would also scare the shit out of me...especially one of the golf clubs they advertise as fitting in said space!!!!
    Also, although admittedly it's not the most practical as an "everyday driver", I for one LOVE that McLaren kept its distinctive butterfly doors. To me, it wouldn't be a McLaren without them. Maybe they get to be a bit of a pain, but I think they make the experience unique and remarkable every time you get in and out of one. Perhaps it grows tiresome, but it put a smile on my face on the test drive.

    You really know the Maclaren models well! Great review.
    When one of my projects yields fruit, I will get one of these as my first super/GT car, althouth a Huracan looks sooo much sexier!!
    The "GT car" category for motorcycles is called "sport tourer". Some with more sport and others better for touring.
    Since I travel quickly and attack the mountain roads once I get there, I chose the Kawasaki. The performance of my CBR1000RR and Daytona Moto2 is superior, but they'd be pure torture for a trip. As I consider a very long trip, the BMW R 1250 RT is more comfy, but less powerful. All 4 motos will 'only' set you back less than $80,000.
    I know fellows with over a dozen motos, but the few people I know with supercars have but one. Sure, there are folks who own more than one supercar or GT car, but not many. That's got to be a marketing and engineering nightmare! How many buyers in each category will want one?
    I wonder how many of these are in garages with versus without other super or GT cars.

    • @BigUriel
      @BigUriel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brentpowell7889 Well I can't say I have driven many McLarens but from people's reviews of them I don't exactly get the notion that they "drive totally differently to each other". They all drive like well sorted mid engined, well dampened supercars, they're all more or less in the same ballpark in terms of power (again they all have basically the same engine), they're all about the same size and weight and they all look pretty similar inside and out, and by most accounts they're all really really fast capable cars but also a bit numb and artificial to drive.
      And yes it is exactly like the 911, a dozen different specs of the same car.

    • @brentpowell7889
      @brentpowell7889 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BigUriel sorry you are ill informed, very very wrong, there are issues with McLaren’s I have owned them over the last 4 years and still do, they drive totally different from each other, you only have to see the initial reviews of the 600 LT all the motoring journalists tell how different they are to each other.
      You can’t compare a Carrera S to GT3 RS, same as you can’t compare a 570S to a 600 LT.
      As for for being dull to drive 🤦‍♂️, McLaren’s are the most driver focused cars on the market that is a well known fact , you might not like the look etc that’s fine, however they are sensational to drive 👍.

    • @BigUriel
      @BigUriel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brentpowell7889 Like I said I haven't driven them, only going by other people's reviews. I've read/watched quite a few of those about McLarens where they are compared to other supercars and although they may be faster they are often said to be less fun and engaging to drive.
      I gotta say between a Carrera S and a GT3RS, it's not exactly the same comparison because they have very different engines (unlike McLarens which are all revvy boost heavy turbocharged V8s circa 4 liters). When it comes to the chassis, I would see the GT3 as a highly tuned CS rather than a new car, after all you could realistically take a CS and spend some money of performance chassis mods and make it pretty damn similar to the GT3.
      It's like saying an M3 Comp is a different car from a regular 3 series. I mean is it really though, or just a higher spec/performance version of the same?
