EU Autopilot is rubbish compared to America. But have they got it working now?

  • I use Autopilot a lot on the motorway. Its brilliant in traffic! But compared to the American system it is primitive and basic.
    I've tested this before - and it wasn't good. But Tesla have pushed out a load of over the air updates. Is it any better now? Only one way to find out!

    I'm afraid I'm of the same opinion. It's great on motorways, dual carriageways and 'A' roads but on anything else it's terrible. It's more stressful and exhausting nannying the autopilot system than it is to just drive the damn thing manually! Not sure we'll ever get the American FSD system here but even if we do I can't see it working too well on British city/town streets.

    • @justgetatesla

      Are our urban spaces more chaotic than theirs? I see some of the FSD videos in America and think they are almost ridiculously ordered. Where are the silly lane markings or parked car half on the pavement?

    • @EddieGriffith2802
      @EddieGriffith2802 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@justgetatesla Exactly! In general American streets are a lot wider and straighter. As an example, in my local village there's a road by the pub that has a row of parked cars all along it. If you meet somebody coming in the opposite direction then the only thing you can do is put two wheels up on to the pavement (fortunately it's a low kerb) and flash them to come through so that they can squeeze passed you. How on earth would FSD ever cope with a situation like that!

    Hi, it’s bad enough driving in cities anyway in the UK. To trust the auto system in a city, is far too dangerous, as you have proved in your video. Also there are far too many idiots on the road today. Motorway no problem. Great video by the way.👍

    Ian , thanks for this update, your videos always provide nuggets of information for me to try out eg. Long pull on the right stalk to increase speed to the current speed limit. Have to say I prefer AP on my Skoda Enyaq to my Model 3. I think you should have set a destination in order for autopilot to work in any possible way. Even Chuck Cook and DirtyTesla do that with their FSD Beta testing. If you’d done that and the lane had split then I think the car would have taken the correct route. But since this is the UK you are expecting a lot for it to perform anywhere near that. With the FSD Beta in the UK I would say the same thing is true but here we don’t have the ability to use it to navigate on city streets just yet. @@justgetatesla The thing is Ian if you set yourself up as the champion of Tesla you have to be prepared for guys like me that have a different opinion than you to to disagree with you when they feel just as strongly that ev's are just not the answer for many people. I don't believe we have the infrastructure or enough power in the system to cope with an all electric method of getting from A to B. There are many questions about the way Lithium is obtained, there are so many questions about what happens to these batteries at the end of their lives as there will be millions to dispose of & you can't argue with the fact that many garages just won't have anything to do with them.

      I'm not a "champion of Tesla" - I'm saying they are the best option at the moment. The other points you make:
      "ev's are just not the answer for many people" - I agree and have said so repeatedly
      "I don't believe we have the infrastructure or enough power in the system to cope" - we don't. A lot more chargers needed, more local power feeds needed. National Grid needs to invest to bring all the power generated in Scotland south now that we have shifted from coal to wind
      "There are many questions about the way Lithium is obtained" - true. Though we can't pick at this and ignore all the questions about the way oil is obtained. The only clean solution is not to travel at all
      "questions about what happens to these batteries at the end of their lives" - whilst that is true, the myth is that all EVs need a replacement battery on x number of miles/years. Or that the end of the car is end of life of the battery. In the real world old Nissan Leaf / Tesla batteries get repurposed as static batteries for homes or to electrify classic cars. Nobody ever talks about this for some reason...

      Automation of other systems seems to be far more successful than wipers! As for fault its very simple - you are in control whether you are using automation or not. Same thing with airline pilots. And the automation systems are smarter than humans who get distracted or miss seeing things or can't accurately remember.
      AP in traffic (busy motorway as an example) is far safer than driving a dumb car manually. More cameras facing more directions than I have eyes. A computer never distracted. And always on cameras recording everything accurately.

    To be honest what you’re using is just adaptive cruise control with lane keep which Tesla calls Autopilot which I had on my last Audi and you would never use in the centre of a city. The next step up from what you have is Enhanced Autopilot and that is only for motorways as stated on the website and that changes lanes and overtakes etc. and uses navigation, so if that is an extra why would you think Basic Autopilot would work on city streets. I think Basic Autopilot is amazing on my Model Y for what it is and when they start with FSD in the UK you will be absolutely amazed.
