    We tried to make a 5 minute video to explain the differences between the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, and it's older brother the Michelin Pilot Super Sport. Sadly we failed, and this video is 9 minutes. If you're not a tyre geek, but are curious about the differences between the two tyres, feel free to skip to the conclusion at 6:10 as that covers most of it.

      I had same combo on my A45. PSS daily and Cup2 for track. The Cup2 as a daily did not last (about 50% of the longevity, not surprising as they start off with less tread depth), The Cup2 were worth just over a second on track, but did aquaplane earlier on a wet track (but were still ok in wet with the awd assistance compared to the pussies in their Porsche’s)

    absolutely need a Pilot Sport 4 S vs pilot sport 4 vid please , my biggest problem with tyres these days is soft side walls , totally hate them some are frankly shocking and completely ruin all driving dynamics , i just dont get how some manufactures can make the sidewalls so dam soft on some tyres , look forward to the next vid thanks

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an issue with the label demands and OE requirements. Nearly all OE manufacturers are calling for quieter more comfortable tyres, and the label rolling resistance grade requires a low rolling resistance. This means manufacturers are taking material and strength out of the sidewalls.
      As noted in the video, the PS4S is ever so slightly softer than the PSS. The next step in Michelin would be the PSCup2.
      Manufacturers who don't score as well on comfort can sometimes give you improved steering feel, such as the Yokohama V105

    Jon fantastic video and thank you for all your help with getting specific information from Michelin. I've being a long fan on the MPSS since fitting to my 911 where it offered more or less cup levels of grip in the dry but was also superb in the wet and on my 911 they lasted 2-3x longer than any other tyre I had tried previously on track and road. Just fitted the 4S today to the rear and though it is way to early to give performance data the first and immediate thing I noticed over the worn MPSS was NVH and road noise significantly reduced.

    Nice to see a balanced review on these at last. Been waiting for these to come out in 225/40/19 for the front of my E46 M3 but looks like its not gonna happen. Need to bite the bullet and get 235/40/19 instead as it has the lowest effect on the speedo compared to the cheaper ones closest to my size (negligible really as it's just under 1% as compared to up to 4% with the other sizes). Have already just fitted the standard PS4 (non "S") on the rear and they are phenomonal, really can't rate them highly enough. They replaced an old set of PS3's that lasted 14k over the past year which were a brilliant set of all year tyres as well. With the new PS4S on the front and my new bilsteins fitted all round the car will be like a go kart - cant wait!

      @tyrereviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sarcastixx74 thank you for the feedback :) for what it's worth I ran 235/35 R19 fronts on the TyreReviews E46 M3 without problem, just make sure you let your insurance company know as technically it is classed as a modification

      @sarcastixx74 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      Thanks for the reply. The 235/40/19's would give the lowest speedo error (under 1%) while the 235/35/19's would be just over 2%. I know it's marginal but I want to keep the same 40 profile as the 35 will probably increase road noise. It's only 18 quid per tyre extra for the size I want compared to the size you listed. If it was more than that though I probably would have settled for the 235/35s! As for insurance, they already have my modifications listed on the policy which includes my non factory alloys/tyres. Thanks for the reminder though, always best to disclose all mods to insurers ;)

    Great review, thanks.
    I've only recently (Oct 2016) bought a set of PSS ( to replace Bridgestone 050's) for my rather lowly Mondeo Titanium X Sport, but they are such an improvement. I've only used them for just over a month before switching to my winter wheels/tyres, so I think by the time I replace the PSS, the PS4 will have been superseded possibly?...but certainly looks promising for the future anyway.

      Frembrit Nez the PSS was on the market for 4 years before the launch of the PS4S, so it depends on how many miles you do. Either way, we're excited at the thought of the PS5S (or whatever Michelin decide to name it!)

      The PS4 already betters the PSS in a number of areas, so while there's quite a big jump in NVH and wet grip from the PSS to the PS4S, the difference between the PS4 and the PS4S will be much smaller.

    Great informative video. Well done. What really impressed me, is the honesty & objectivity. Look forward to more videos from you. And yes we would love to see video(s) comparing mpss/mp4s/mp Cup2/conti sport contact 6. It will be an instant hit, especially with people like myself who owns many Porsches with mpss & cup2 & P zero & MPA4 tires. It will be also great to see videos of tire reviews of same or comparable (ultra high performance) tires but at lower temperatures (e.g 33F to 49F) in both dry & wet conditions. Many owners of exotic or sport cars still drive their cars with these ultra high performance tires at these lower temperatures if they live in areas where it does not normally snow, but only very few of these tires perform reasonably OK under such conditions. Again geat job and please keep them coming. Mark

    Great video on this subject, and one of the first ones which is very informative with lots of detail! I'm having the PSS on my GT86 and it's incredible. Shame for me is that manufacturers put more resources in larger sizes nowadays. 18" is already something of the past. Now 19-20" are the benchmark tires. One question to the car manufacturers: is this really necessary? For the next gen cars you have 18" for the Fiesta ST, 19" for the Mégane RS and now 20" on a Civic Type-R. For me 17" is correct size for a Fiesta and 18" is for a Focus RS, Mégane RS or Civic Type-R. For the car enthusiast 19-20" is not payable. Certainly if you do 5-10000 kilometers with a set of tires.
    Maybe an idea for a next video to discuss that matter. Keep on doing these video's. It's an asset on TH-cam!

      We agree the PS4S should be in 18", and while it isn't yet, that's not to say it won't be in the future. The tyre manufacturers will react to the demand of the market, and there's so much interest in an 18" PS4S in Europe, lets see what happens in 2018 :) Fingers crossed!

    thanks for your great review, my 2010 911 came with Sport Cups but they were discontinued for the base 18 inch size in the Sport Cup 2 so I needed to find a tire that would be a suitable replacement. I ended up with the 4S and like how the tires are quieter but have yet to test the grip. Living in LA our roads are crappy - with a lot of bumps and potholes in the roads, so going 19 inch was not a wise option if I wanted more comfort. I believe this is the best compromise since I never track the car. I have Super Sports on my M4 CS and love them but will use this review once I need a new set as well.

      What’s the best Michelin tire in this size for an Audi S3 as it is not available in the pilot sport 4s still yet as far as I am aware. Choices are softer PS4, older pss or full on winter compromising psc2?

    Since PSS and PS4S don't come in 17, I can either stick to the classic PS2 N3 or try the PS4 for my 993.

  • @TheTexican05
    @TheTexican05 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Career auto worker of 22yrs. Former time trials racer for 10yrs. My experiences with each tire:
    PSS in 265/40R18 and 245/40R18 on a 640bhp GTO. Built 6-spd trans and IRS rear w/3.91 gears. 3450lbs w/o driver. 90% street and canyon carving use, 10% track events.
    These replaced 245/45R17 (squared) Dunlop Direzza Z1 ands ZII Star Specs, which were your typical rock hard auto-x 200TW "hero" tires. I hated them on the road, loved when I sold them off! Comparatively, the PSS were SO smooth and quiet by comparison, it transformed the whole car in all conditions. Even my other half commented praises and surprise from the passenger seat. I never wanted any other tire on THAT car for dual duty use. PSS! 💪 👏
    I ran multiple drag radials on the back of this car trying to find that extra "stick" under the 550whp and 500wtq of the race motor. None of them performed worth a s*** on the street because you just couldn't get heat into them. And you were left with floppy, sloppy sidewalls that were straight terrifying on the street when thee was any curve to the road.
    But the Michelin PSS? I would haze them in a quick 1st or 2nd burnout for a few brief seconds, then they would hook up in 2nd gear every time. And hazing tires with a big cube motor is endlessly fun.
    CONCLUSION: I would still be buying the PSS for this car if they weren't so crazy marked up and nearly extinct...
    TIRE WEIGHT: The tire weight of the PSS was consistently 2-3lbs lighter than its competitors as well, due to the synthetic Twaron material used in the belts/carcass. You can feel this in most conditions. Less rolling resistance, easier to accelerate and stop this tire. Also made the ride quality leagues better, compared to a half dozen other tires I ran on this car.
    Now the Michelin PS4S, first in a 225/40R18 square fitment on stock wheels, then 245/40R18 on lightweight racing wheels.
    Car: 2017 VW GTI SE, 350bhp, 420lb/ft. 3150lbs with full interior and accessories. 90% street, 10% track days. Did 4 track events in 2023 in the Texas HEAT on these tires, so my info below covers street and track behavior.
    FIRST IMPRESSIONS: the 225/40s were NOISY! They felt and gripped BEAUTIFULLY right out of the tire shop parking lot, onto a beautiful sunny hill country road...compared to the Pirelli Cinturato trash cans that came on the car,. But this performance intoroduced a lot more road noise, especially for the first 500-1k miles.
    The thin sidewalls of the 225/40 did me no favors, but that combo punched above its weight class: my little GTI kept up with a VERY fast 2014 GTR Black Edition with a stout driver through the Smoky Mountains of central TN back in 2020. My car barely made 290whp at that time. His was well into the 480whp range. I was impressed and terrified that day...
    TRACK: both tires are super sensitive to tire pressures. You can add or subtract just 2-3psi and drastically change the ride quality, comfort and handling of the tires on the street, very similarly to how a car with DCC suspension behaves in different modes.
    The PSS and PS4S both preferred 34-36psi hot on track days, so you'd start way lower, around 28-29psi cool, depending on the ambient air temps and track surface temps. Go beyond 36psi hot and they'd start to sign off like a shady tech CEO during an IRS audit... 😖 🙈
    The tires build heat quickly but are slow to shed it, if that makes sense. You can get 2-3 hot laps from them, but then you need a solid and easy cool-down lap to let them recover. This is the price you pay for running a do-it-all road and track tire. If you go into this eyes wide open, you won't be disappointed. Temper expectations before any big car/performance purchase.
    Both Michelins come up to temp VERY early, which makes them more tolerant in cooler climates like the PNW or northeast than a dedicated max summer tire. They're happiest in 60-65* F and higher temps for all out grip, but they'll surprise you in a good way in 50* F and above for general safety under a sane right foot.
    Make of this what you will, it's honest, but not the same tires on the same cars. I have no direct comparison "data" with lap times and braking distances, because I'm a racer and a parent on a budget, at all times. But this is the subjective info that can't be fit into a short and concise video.
    LIKE if this info helped you (the readers) at all. And thank you, Tyre Reviews for all the solid content! 🍻 ❤

      Haha. Thanks. Reason I'm asking is I am considering replacing my stock CSC6 due to the bad wear rate & sidewall roll. Considering the 4S but it does not come in 245/30/20. Closest means I need to go to 35 series.

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might be marginally better but not night and day, and adding the sidewall height would negate that anyway. If sidewalls are your thing and you don't want to fit a Cup 2, check out the Vorti R or the Yoko V105S.

    • @eddiegila3579
      @eddiegila3579 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Cup 2 was actually second on my list but its 35 series as well. At least the sidewall is stiffer. Driving on the street in the monsoon will be my greatest challenge but since I don't commute, thought I'd give it a try. Hoping they're better in the track despite the height increase. Thanks again.

    Great Review thanks for all the info. I have the BMW M2 with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports fitted and was wondering what would be the best option for my next tyres. Having come from a Quattro car back to RWD and living in Ireland, (our part of the world) where the range of both temperatures and rain is so vast tyre choice is always a tough one!
    Question if you don't mind me asking....... What do you fit to your M3 in the winter months, do you stick with the same or do you change to a set of winter / all weather tyres?

    • @tyrereviews

      Difficult question, I Guess it depends if you appreciate steering feel at the limit over wet grip. The PS4S is definitely the better tyre objectively, but it does loose a little of the feel from the PSS.

    And live in Southern California, USA
    I was thinking of trying the PS4S, I looked at the forums and the consensus is the Pilot Super Sport is the preferred. I realize the Michelin is sponsoring you, so I’m wondering is it a better tire on some cars then others or is it an issue if that’s what they know and not accepting change to the PS4S ?

      Michelin don't sponsor me or pay me to say anything. Go watch my review of the 4S vs Super sport and you'll see what the m3 guys are talking about. The PS4S is objectively a better tyre but subjectively the PSS wins for handling and steering feel etc. In southern cali if you want the super sport dry grip and feel, go Cup 2, it's even better subjectively!

    Just curios about the wear rates between the PS4s and the Cup two on track. Will the PS4S give more track days than the Cup 2??

    Could you test out the Michelin Pilot Sport A/A 3 Plus please? Would like to see how it holds up with the Pilot Sport 4 S, Pilot Super Sport and Pilot Super Cup 2. I live in Canada and storing the tires in the garage is still cold so the Pilot Sport A/S 3 Plus is better in terms of tires cracking in cold weather for me. Thanks.

    Great reviews. Im a fan. Subscribed👍👍👍. I have a 7 series (not LWB) with Goodyear Excellence Rft, 20in wheels. After watching the videos im looking to change to non runflats. I havent felt confident at bends at high speed on this car. It cant be the size of the car as its only 2 inches longer than a 5 series. I'm looking for a safe tyre as even tiny wheel slide kills my confidence. Thinking between ps4s vs primacy. Wondering what is overall safest tyre at wet british weather. And how does ps4s/primacy compare with other uhp summer tyres in cold winter months when the roads get bit icy? Many thanks.

      For ultimate safety you want a summer / winter combination. The PS4S and Primacy are similar ultimate levels of grip, but the PS4S will be more sporty.

    I have to replace the rear tyres. I will put on the 4S should I replace the front tyres too or should I keep them on the Super Sport?

      You're ok doing a staged swap if you want the added wet grip of the 4S

    Hi, so I have a question - I need to buy a whole set of summer tyres for my GLA45 AMG - and 4S is not made in the right size for my car(235/45r19), so it's a choice of either the Pilot Sport 4 or the stock Continental 5P - the contis have a fantastic grip, but with some really strong drawbacks(they wear out like crazy, are very noisy and absolute rubbish in low temperatures). Should I switch to Michelin? Or stick with contis?

      The Pilot Sport 4 will offer very similar levels of grip to the 5P with much improved wear. It's ok to change an axle pair at a time, but ideal to change all 4.

      Wow, thanks for the super quick reply! Yeah if anything, I'm going to buy the whole set.

    they need to make the Pilot Sport 4s in a larger size to fit the GT350... The Pilot Sport Cup 2 do not last ...
