    I have recently moved from the Michelin Pilot Super Sports to the PS5 on my 420hp RWD M140i. The difference in grip levels is staggering, I have gone from lighting up the rear tyres in the dry in 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd, to having almost immediate grip from a standstill. Absolutely transformed the capabilities of the car.

      Hi mate how old were your PSS? I'm in a similar boat, looking to switch out the PSS on my Maserati Gransport (similar power, RWD, similarly spins up all the way to third).
      I was thinking 4S but I heard they have soft sidewalls and aren't as sharp and I don't want that.
      I'd go toyo r888r which are AWESOME from testing on my previous car, but they also tend to sandblast side sills when warm which I'd want to avoid.
      Yokohama AD08R are also apparently great, haven't tried those.
      Are the PS5 as sharp as your previous PSS?

    • @iRichhyy
      @iRichhyy ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Tom--Ace Hi Tom, I suppose it depends on your use case and how you drive the car. The main benefits for me for the PS5 over the PSS is the all year round usability. They are night and day different in the cold/damp/wet conditions. The PSS only provided any level of grip if it was bone dry and over 12/14 degrees C. Im sure you've experienced this. In truth I only went for the PS5 as I can't get the PS4S in my tyre size. Whilst the 4s won't offer much more grip in wet/dry conditions apparently they are a lot more rewarding when pushing on. Either way I would 100% recommend switching from the PSS to PS5 or 4S especially if you live in a climate like the UK.

    THANK YOU !
    It’s so rare to see a test between different categories of tyres ! This will make choosing between Touring and Performance tyre much easier.
    Your test clearly shows the importance of choosing the right category for your application.
    The Touring tyre is probably the safest for the average driver with no piloting skills thanks to it’s predictability. Also it’s more refined for everyday driving.
    The UHP is the tyre for a GT, shining when driving fast on the road. But it’s not for the track.
    The UUHP is definitely the one to choose for driving at the limit on a track.
    Also, the data for TÜV shows that tyres should be tested when worn, there was some good and bad surprises in their testing…

    Tyre temperature and how it effects pretty much all aspects of driving is fascinating. Back when I rode my motorcycles, the difference of peak performance temperature between touring tyres (55°C), sports tyres (85°C) and race tyres (95°C) was quite something.
    In car tyres it's similar, and you can feel that, when the temperatures vary greatly between days.

    This again confirms to me that I made the right choice for PS5 for my Alfa GT. Perfect all rounder, which still keeps the comfort, but also wouldn't be ashamed if taken to a track day. After 3k KM with them I can say that I'm superbly pleased, and happy to see the life expectancy, plus with the added bonus of keeping the wet performance when close to end of it's lifetime. Also can confirm the wet performance is really amazing, I felt super safe during my speedy highway night drive across Europe in the pouring rain recently. Perfect tyre for GT cars in my opinion. Happy Michelin customer. :) P.S: Astonishing test as always John!

    Have been running the PS5 for around 4000 miles on a mk5 Golf GTi through this years hot british summer. Realise that as I swap from an all season for the summer which will make any performance tyre feel amazing, very familiar roads have felt a lot more precise to drive on compared to the PS 4 used for the last two summers (same car - Golf GTi Mk 5).The PS5 has been very confidence inspiring in the summer down pours - subjectively they felt a lot more surefooted and the TC/ABS hardly triggered. Where I was really surprised was how neutral they felt on the super hot days - previous experience with both PS4 and other brands, the super hot temperatures would feel really imprecise and spongy, especially on the magnificent top dressed british roads (in the same car) but with the PS5 I felt a lot more connected.

      This would be true IF Michelin (and all of the other 'majors') offered their models in a FULL RANGE of sizes (at least down into the 17" wheel sizes, if not 16"), for said models.
      Sadly, Michelin, in all of their wisdom and 'kindness', has never, and will never offer their 'miraculous' PS4S, let alone the even more ridiculously 'up-sized' PSS5, in the size I need (215/40-17), and which would ever possibly fit under my car's wheel wells.
      I am NOT buying a new ride, with a /35 or /30 rubber band profile, 19"-22" hoops as standard, just to experience their 'perfect' road tire. ☹

    Interesting stuff. Also, finally, a tire test that looks at what I care about most, wet roads and 90+ degree temps. I'm in Florida, in the summer it rains almost every day, you can get spot flooding very easily, and the second the clouds are gone it's 90+ degrees, with super high humidity, and the roads are wet and literally steaming well into the night. I owned a C5 Corvette a while back, and it had still had the stock runflats on it, and that thing was nearly impossible to drive in the rain and it slip and slid all over the place, but the tires looked brand new - when I finally changed them out anyways, for the legendary Goodyear GSD3, still the best looking tires ever made, the performance was like getting a new car when the roads were wet, that was the first time I had ever bought good tires and felt them 'bite' in corners, and since then I've always replaced crappy tires with the best wet handling tires I could find for every car I've owned.

    The statistics provided by the TÜV really attest to the consistency in performance over wear with the Michelin tyres. I've said this before, but the Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres I drive on still perform like new at end-of-life in all situations. I'm on my second set on my Golf VII R. Fortunately, living in Australia means I can enjoy the high grip that comes with the high temperatures here, but they're still very competent in the wet. • @milk-it
      @milk-it 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sunshine101spooger You're right. They do have a tendency to aquaplane when the road has a bit of water on it, but in the Golf R it's fairly predictable and manageable. Like you said, on the track they are awesome. Loads of grip, no feathering or jittering - just a pleasure to drive on.

    • @milk-it
      @milk-it 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ratcher I was comparing the Cup 2 at its end-of-life to the standard road tyre Bridgestones that came with the car out of the factory. Those unpredictably lost grip in normal driving, even though they still had tread and about 25% wear left. With the Cup 2, I never had that issue. It did expectedly lose a bit of grip towards the end, but I didn't have to alter my driving like I had to with the original tyres that were fitted. Just clarifying my experience, I'm not disputing your experience.

    Michelin has always been excellent at blending grip with long life so no changes here. Go Michelin!
    Cavity noise intrigues me as a concept. What does it mean? I had a set of Michelins a while back and I could hear the kind of noise on bumps that you hear when bouncing a large rubber ball like a space hopper, basketball or similar! Sort of high frequency reverberation. 🤔
    Very impressed by how objective you manage to make these comparison videos.

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That's an interesting sounding sound! Cavity noise is the noise of the sound resonating or bouncing inside the wheel / tyre, it's the mid pitch usually opposed to the slightly higher windish noise from the tread pattern. you might have had a loose TPMS lol

    • @toddpowell9393
      @toddpowell9393 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Cavity noise is caused by the vibration of the air within the tyre causing a dull droning noise, typically around 220-240Hz.
      Interestingly both Honda, Lexus and Michelin themselves have tried to engineer small cavities (called Helmholtz resonators) within the wheel spokes/rims which are tuned to cancel out these frequencies, akin to blowing over the rim of a beer bottle!

    Before discovering this excellent channel I put a set of PS4S on my 380bhp F-Type S and a set of PS5 on my 2004 400bhp XKR. I think I made two very good choices more by luck than judgement. Despite the slight horsepower advantage the XKR is far more relaxed and delivers a much smoother ride. I tend not to push too hard but it can motor along very quickly without you realising. The PS5 suits it well. The F-Type in contrast is like and eager puppy encouraging me to push harder all the time. PS4S again suits that well.

    I had the Pilot 4 and now I have all 5 in a BMW e90. The new ones are better because they are a little more rigid in the casing, which allows lower pressures and improves cushioning and grip without the flan-like movements that the Pilot 4 had, which often forced higher pressures. All a success.

    I've had these tyres on my 2003 BMW Z4 for the last 14.000km. Absolutely love them. The grip is fantastic, I can take corners at ridiculous speeds without losing grip. Wet weather performance has also been fantastic, having used them through some pretty strong rainstorms. I also drove at 220km/h on the Autobahn with them and they felt rock solid. Lastly, I got caught by a surprise April snowstorm with them and I didn't slip at all. Really love them, I will definitely be sticking to Michelin for my next set of tyres.

    Did 2 set of Primacy 4 for my MPV and 2 set of PS4 and currently use PS4S for my GTI. Primacy 4 definitely for comfort driving especially when you drive with family. Low noise level and confident in wet.
    On the other hand for the PS4, first change of PS4 is made in EU. Love the overall character of the car. Straight line stability and calm on center. Most of the time my GTI is driven on highway. Replace the first set after clocked 66k km with 2.6mm of thread left.
    New set of PS4 is made in Thailand. First difference I had noticed is the straight line is slight wandering during high speed compared to previous set. This set of tyre clocked 25k km then I replaced with new set of wheel and tyre (19" pretoria wrapped with PS4S made in EU)
    PS4S definitely the best tyre to date. On center feel still calm but progressive build up as the steering turns. Straight line stability and tracking is improved a lot!

    It is fantastic to find someone who can talk so coherently about tyre chartacteristics, and even better that you have the skills (and facilities) to test them in a meaningful way.
    It is a pity (in a very narrow way) that tyres last so long, as with the amount of driving I do, I'm only changing tyres every three to five years, so have very little exposure to different tyre types and makes.
    Anyway, I followed your advice in 2019 to put PS4 tyres on my GTi, and 36,000km later, will be replacing the fronts with PS5's.

      @@tyrereviews Michelin tell us that their tyres are safe when new and safe as worn as well (unlike the others I believe).
      It would be really interesting to see a test with tyres half or a quarter tread left. That would provide the customer information we never had and perhaps desi courage manufacturers to build tyres specifically to Winn tests.
      If someone has that power, it's you! And as we all know, with great power comes, great responsibility! 😁

    Very good data, thank you. The PS4S is widely lauded as THE tyre for higher performance cars yet I feel a lot of people (me included) went along and fitted them based on here say and forum chat reputation without looking at the data. For even without the data, it was immediate just what a marked difference there is between what I had fitted (Bridgestone RE050) to the Michelin. Yes the RE050 is an old tyre however, I never understood why manufacturers would issue their cars with this tyre, most likely a money oriented decision.
    Great to see my (and I'm sure many others) decision to go with the Michelin is backed by data. While I don't track my car, I do like to have some spirited fun in it from time to time and can attest to it's wet driving dynamics when compared to the previously fitted tyres, which would break traction far too quickly at the back.

    I honestly don't know how you could even buy anything else than the latest PilotSport tyre. Even if you don't need that sporty character, it still outperforms other tyres in wet/dry cornering and braking. My worn out PS 3's still do amazing in both dry and wet. You could say PilotSports are overkill on my boring slow A3 1.6 FSI but they're simply the safest tyre, and they actually transform the car into a very fun gripped up car on the local mountainpasses. I'm already excited to slap on some PS5's next summer.

    Great video, as ever. Loved the PS4 on my S4, the 255/35/19's had masses of grip and lasted about 18k. So I'll be going PS5 on the Clubman when the (225/40/18 RFT) Bridgestone S001's eventually wear. That being said, they've done 12k so far and still have over 5mm of tread, so could be a while.

      @@gepal7914 totally get where you’re coming from there, but with the increased longevity of the Michelin, I think that’s why I’d sway that way. I had AS3’s on my A3, and they were good, but the PS4 was Mike’s better - different generation of tyre and type of car though.

    • @ScottLewis123

      @@machtschnell7452 I mean, that comes down to driving style and roads driven.
      S4 was hammered on with mostly A and B roads (where safe to do so) and occasional hot lap (not really what the car was built for and brakes were the limiting time factor - even with RS5 upgrades, they would overheat and fade after decent lap or two).
      I’ve had other premium high performance tyres take much less abuse and last a far fewer miles on lighter, less powerful, cars.
      What might last 20k miles for one person may only last 10-15k for another, depending on use.

    I know Michelin is one of your partners and allowed you use of their testing facility but comparisons like AD09 vs A052 vs A050 would be awesome. I’m loving the AD09 and think it could be the new standard to replace the PS4S as the default high performance street tyre! It’s potentially a “Cup 2” type tyre that will last longer and be better in the wet too 👏🏼
