I start watching this channel a few years ago, vids are always very informative and nicely packed. But it also became kind of a routine to me. It's hard to explain. As seasons passes, vids switches from summer tyres to winter tyres on tracks with snow every where. And these shifts are following me along the way when i enter the differents seasons. I watch the winter test with a hot tea, a warm hoodie and it's kind of soothing. Then springs and summer comes and my habit changes, fresh drinks, fan running to cool me down. It's like a clock who give you from time to time a reminder of the season you're in.

One thing to add is longevity. I got 20k miles out of the PSS and 30k miles on the PS4S over similar driving conditions with a F80 M3. I replaced the PS4S with the same tire not because the tread was gone but the compound had gotten hard after 3 years and grip levels had diminished. (I estimate I was within 6 months of the tread wearing out). Highly recommend the PS4S.

I’ve had PSS on my car, now I tell paved them with PS4. Looked up values on different tests in different countries. The noise level is better, somewhat lower fuel consumption, bit better comfort, noticeable better grip in turns. The PSS, although the older and inferior tyre was available at a slightly higher price than the PS4 so it was an easy decision to make and am very happy with the decision.
The tyres have been driven only on public roads so far, no track yet.

I am glad you put the caveat that "your car may be different". My last Porsche, a 2007 Boxster S, after many replacement sets of the N spec PSS, I finally tried the P4S non N-spec. It was cheaper, and on paper, better in every way. However, I found the ride to actually be harsher, understeer went up, and steering sharpness decreased. I was shocked, especially as I expected the ride to be better, yet it was not. To be clear, it was the way the car transferred small bumps into the car, like going over a gap in the pavement that I really felt with the P4S, not over-all ride quality. It's replacement the 2015 Boxster S is still on its N-spec Pirelli rubber, and for it's job as a daily it works great, but when it is time, I will have to make the same leap of faith again and there is something to knowing how the N-spec will feel that gives comfort. The GT4 will likely always have its N-spec Cup2s...those tires are just incredible and fit the mission.

Difficult to answer that question. OE tyres are always that compromise between price and best performance for that particular car model.

Great video! In my opinion, the oem marked tire is not automatically (even when the car gets freshly released with it) the "best" tire for the car. It is the tire, that makes the car behave like the manufacturer prefers, or intends it to do within the capabilities of that specific tire manufacturer. "Best" is too subjective for that i think, everybody has a different opinion on what is best. Maybe you prefer more comfort, or maybe you prefer pointier steering as the manufacturer... I have never had any issues with non oem marked ones, as long as i used quality tires. I mean i put AO winter tires on a small Mercedes SUV, and they are great. (4 winters now, absolute no complaints) I put non oem marked Michelin summer tires on the same car to replace the Pirelli MO ones, and i prefer how the car ddrives with these Michelins by far. (of course in this case it could just be that the Pirelli's felt bad as they were 4 years old, but the difference was extreme.)

Of course the standard recommended pressures will be right for the OE tyre, but there's absolutely no guarantee that they are going to be best for the PS4S. It's a completely different tyre. My Peugeot 208 came with Michelin Energy Savers (I think the non-Plus variant). I upgraded to Michelin CrossClimate+ all round two years back, partly because I wanted something better suited to a wide range of conditions, but also because I believed that tyre technology had come on in six years. They certainly didn't feel any worse in any particular aspect, and having that extra confidence in winter meant money well spent. The fact they're also rated much better in terms of rolling resistance (peculiar given the 208's focus on efficiency) is a bonus.

Yeah, I remember when I had the PSSs I had to drop the tire pressure to 2.0BAR instead of the recommended 2.3BAR (front axle). With the PS4 I can keep it at 2.1. I know it's just 0.1bar which is not even 1.5PSI, but the difference is noticeable.
Also on public streets where dust and small debris are not uncommon the PS4 (there is no S option in Europe for my Mazda 3MPS BK and I will not go 19" just for that) seems to be more consistent and less upset by any of these impurities.

I went for the aftermarket 4S after the PSS on my '18 F82 wore out. Could not be happier with its all-around performance. I understand from my BMW dealer that the star marked 4S that is now OEM on the G8x wouldn't work on my F82 due to it being a bespoke tire for the new gen car and that I was better off getting the generic aftermarkets.

Hi I haven't tried the cup 2 BMW but I have used the og cup 2 and N0 N1 K1 K2 and the M0. The M0 (mercedes) has very similar wet performance to the og cup 2. It might actually be even better than the og. The compound seems harder than the OG and the Ferrari and Porsche compounds. The side wall also seems able to handle heavy weights/loads very slightly better than the tires designed for lighter cars like ferrari and Porsche. My Camaro weighs 3700lbs and wears 285-295 fronts and 305 rears. The M0 needs more time to get to perfect temperature than the other cup2s but also deals with heavy abuse better. This is not scientefic fact it's just my experience after running them in my car on street autocross and track. Hope this helps. We all wish for the day when manufacters should just straight up say what they did to make the oe tire.

I have been asking for this for a few times already, but I would like like to see/hear your view on tire aging. Maybe some tire manufacturer or reseller has a set of 5 old winter or sommer tires which can be comparet to a brand new tire on track and road. @Tyre reviews, myself and a few others have put the non star-rated PS4Ss on our M4/M3s. I particularly had massive issues with the back of he car becomong completely disconnected from the front (Which were still MPSSs). Any slight left or right steering input at 100 would make the back end flop about like a dog's doodah. Yes they had good grip in a straight line but aweful and complete confidence killing anywhere else. The sidewalls are just so floppy. They feel like some FAlkens I put on a car years ago which leasted100 miles before they were binned.
It worries me that others don't notice this - a few people agree though.
Even my TC light would flashwhile taking a very shallow corner at 90+
    Don't you notice it?

    • @tyrereviews

Maybe as the M2 is a lighter car with different sizes it was less of an issue. I understand what you are talking about, but certainly wasn't significant at roads speeds or flat out on track. I can't comment on the TC issue as I run TC off on track.

In 2 years, unless something happens, I need to change my SportContact 6 on my Type R. I hope, that by that time, the Michelin Cup2 Connect are available in 245/30 ZR20. Or I really do get a new set of wheels entirely. 245/35 ZR19 from the Type R Sport Line. But Michelin is looking tempting these days for summer tyres. For winter, I currently will stay with my Vredestein tyres.
Michelin knows what they are doing in terms of sporty tyres. Not just car tyres, but motorcycle tyres as well.
Tyre technology is always developing. It's only natural, that after a certain time, the OE tyres are not top of the top anymore for that particular vehicle. In the sport segment, that is even more noticable than in the touring segment.
When I changed from the BT015 to the BTS20 on my Fireblade back in the days, it was like night and day, especially in the wet and on the track in hogh temperatures. The BT015 overcooked and became mushy in just a few laps, the S20 kept the grip for longer.
With car tyres, it is similar, though I feel like, the current developement is slowing down a little. Especially with a couple of manufacturers like Bridgestone and Dunlop.
That probably has also to do with motor sports involvement, since a lot of them have become, at least tyre wise, one make races. That might be more competetive, but it also slows down developement.

@@tyrereviews Oddly enough, for the Zype R's winter tyre size, 235/45 ZR18 the Cup 2 Connect are alread available. While 245/30 ZR20 is good for stearing feel, a bit meatier tyres add to comfort and wear resistance. At least from what I have seen other Type R owners experience, the 245/30 ZR20 quickly fall apart on the track.
I think, I have to rewatch your video on the effect of tyre width. It's only 10mm difference on each side, but every time I switch between summer and winter tyres, I feel a big difference. Not just due to the rubber compound.

After a few "episodes" where the car just lost grip/control, I took the decision to change to Cup 2, because they are the only other tires that are "approved" and with "*" for the CS. To my knowledge there are only minor differences between an oem marked tyre and a non marked version - these are usually in relation to dimensional tolerances and other minor parameters and not fundamental differences. I would be interested if you compared oem vs non oem versions of the same tyre. I expect that they would not show much difference under road driving conditions with the non oem tyre being 10% cheaper!

I run a 285 or 295 front and 305 rear tire on my Camaro 1le. This leads to different spec front and rear tires avalable. I have run K1, K2 , N0, N1 and M01 spec cup 2s on my Camaro SS 1le. There are noticable differences between all models of the tire. Starting with the older models the K1(458 spec) and NO(gt4) are darker and feel harder than some of the newer compounds. There is some kind of sidewall difference between them but it is subtle. The rubber is a deep jet black. The newer models K2(488 pista) and N1(991.2 gt3) are much lighter in color. More of a grey. It is not a subtle difference nor is the color difference from age. The N1 and K2 feel more agressive than a standard cup 2. The K2 also has far less tread lines than other cup 2 tire. The K2 is also the softest and grippiest even when compared to the N1 spec. Lastly the M01(mercedes) spec again has the deep black rubber. However the M0 definitely feels like it has a stiffer sidewall compared to the other tires designed for lighter cars. It is also the hardest compound and most wear resistant. It also takes longer than the k2 and N1 to get to operating temperature. Lastly I feel it has more tread lines than an standard cup 2. Hope this was slightly informative.

It felt amazing the +10 section width at the front complemented the grippy compound of the N1 at the rear and the car was balanced, had very strong turn in and maintined good stability. It was hot(100F+) and I ran 4, 20 minute sessions but the tires were amazing. On the hottest sessions in noticed some fall off in the last few laps. I was running around 37 psi hot on track as recommended for my car.
Yeah after hearing the Ferrari cheater press cars a few years ago and now seeing a k2 cup 2 with what seems to be half the tread lines missing, I suspected the k2 was going to be pretty crazy. How much better is the cup 2 connect compound? I assumed it was the same but they just added a sensor. I know it's proprietary but wish all the tire companies would disclose things like stealth changes, and the differences between the oe tire codes.
