  • Previously we established the VW Golf Mk2 track car with ABF engine swap and ITBs wasn't structurally damaged after the crash at the track, so the rebuild begins... Only things got out of hand and what was supposed to be a minor repair turned into a full front engine bay restoration. The end result is well worth it though! In this feature length episode we go through changing the timing belt and water pump, the amazing restoration of the engine bay and fitting all the components back in and going through the incredible spec this engine has.

      It's such a great car isn't it? There's more videos coming of this piece of awesomeness. 😁

      Thank you! Tired a slightly different format, with the extended cuts and longer run time, so glad you liked it.

    You turned tensioner wrong direction 👍

    • @golfmk2

      Does it make any difference as to which way the tensioner is turned when tensioning the belt? When we turned the engine over multiple times it came to TDC perfectly each time.
      Hope you enjoyed the video though amd thank you for taking the time to comment. 😁

    Great feature length video. I'm interested to know how you came about working out how bits from all sorts of different cars like a part from a pug would work with your mk2 setup. The average person wouldn't even consider that.

      It's half having the need, and half knowing what's out there.
      The PAS, some go without, but having driven a quick rack non PAS setup in a mates car, it was hindering the pace as the car was fighting back hard. Sticking with power steering, it's PAS, electro-hydraulic, or full electric steering column. I didn't trust the EZ steer electric kits after experiencing one where it thought half a turn to the left was the centre, sketchy! High revs and cornering killed my stock setup, so EH-PAS was the answer.

      I'm sure I saw the PSA 106/Saxo setup on a VW race car, Corrado perhaps, years ago. Next was to find a car at a breakers and take as much of it as possible. The rest is just custom werk.

      Does the same thought process apply to things like the Ford coil pack, Toyota throttle bodies and non-turbo 20v shifter for example? Or were these things that you had to hand and just made them work? Again, I'm sure many will be wondering how you know these things work, unless some is trial and error?

    • @ABF16V

      @@golfmk2 the megasquirt ECU that's been in play since 2009 runs wasted spark, so ignition is split into groups of 2 cylinders. Side A/B. Commonly available coilpacks in Europe will be found on Peugeots and Fords. Having worked on a few Fords, seeing Bosch stamped on the part, said this is a good one to use. Another good one is that found on non turbo 1.8 20v, a logic based coil with its own heatsink.

      ... yes, it's knowing what is available and what do you need. Didn't want to run the old distributor with moving parts. ECU at the time supported distributor or wasted spark. COP setup was not needed for this project.

    What compression ratio is this engineering running? Also, does this motor have sensors, specifically anti-knock ?

    • @ABF16V
      @ABF16V ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Compression of the standard ABF engine.. I think was 10.5:1 but this is just from memory (actual figure may be a little more). This engine is a shade over 11:1 and the exact figure I cannot remember as it was built in 2009/10. All 4 cylinders are equal as the head was cc'd then adjusted till all match. If you were wondering about how it behaves when turned by hand, it has a light flywheel and fair heavy duty valvesprings. The original engine had a knock sensor, this does not.
      It has crank engine speed, coolant temp, intake air temp, throttle position, vacuum manifold air pressure for part throttle and a wideband air fuel ratio sensor.

      @@ABF16V many thanks for your comprehensive reply. Very interesting. I think it was in the rebuild video where the engine management system was mentioned., can the ECU hold more than one map and, but f so, can you switch between maps on the go?

    • @ABF16V
      @ABF16V ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jakemurphy9536 on this ECU, a Megasquirt 2, you would have to add an extra component to the circuit board, then you can config a few switchable items. Not something I've ever needed on this car as it just uses the different areas of the spark, fuel, closed loop operations to do all the different things I need. Idle nicely in one region of the map, pull away in another, cruise at light load, go hell for leather at full load in all rpms, control the fuel nicely on overrun/coast. It's quite an old ECU now but it does the job
