    Nice swap! I'm in the USA so sadly no ABF for us here. I'm looking at building an ABF clone but not really sure where to start. I know the 9A head is what a lot of people use. This is for our MK3 Cabrio 2.slow (ABA 8v engine) which just hit 205k and is making a little valve noise so I think it's time is up. We just put a lot of time and money into a new clutch, new brakes and rotors, new struts/springs, ball joints, new control arm bushings, sway bar bushings, and also did all of the rear end 5k ago. And 10k ago we fully restored the interior. My wife and I do all the work ourselves so we're not quite ready to give her to the scrap yard yet given our recent investments. I really want to do the 16V conversion but want to know how to do a clone properly to get at least 150+ hp. It just wouldn't be worth the time and money otherwise. Any advice is appreciated!

      It should be Motronic 5.9.2, pretty much the same management as the ABA.

    how do you convert the ABA American 8v 2.0L into a 16v ABF? how much does a recycled ABF cost in the U.K.? Then shipping to America. I want that engine in my car more than a 1.8T 20v AWP. You guys always get the best engines over there in the U.K.

    • @mk2gt6
      @mk2gt6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +fockyoumang I have seen the engines sell for approx £200, I bought a whole car for £400. Not sure what shipping would cost

    I assume the mk2 is ce2? If so was the harness from the mk3 just a plug in direct to OEM ce2 fuse block?

    Hey! How hard it is to put the ABF engine in the 1.4 shell? i need it for folkrace, so I dont need all the electronics like lights, etc, etc. I just need the engine to run good. The thing that scares me is the wiring stuff... Would it be hard to get it running in empty shell? I'm a beginner.

    Hi there.
    Old thread..but im asking anyhow....Did you use the immobox,ecu and ignition lock and such from the donor car when you put the abf in the mk2?
    I have just done the same as you,, but mine WONT start...it fires up...then dies like i just ripped the coil out:P
    no spark after 1sec....

      Richard Dane si, son muy duros y fiables, yo tengo el mismo en un Ibiza cupra del año 98 pero también tuve el 2.0 8v, son interminables. Y repito, muy muy muy buen trabajo,

    sorry for another question, throttle cable, how did you rectify it? also were all tubing basically the same for both engines? and what did you use to block the purge intake valve on the throttle body?

    • @mk2gt6
      @mk2gt6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Phillips I think we used the mk3 cable, hoses were the same, used mk2 radiator, a screw to block it

    P.S. Sorry for my english :D

      @mk2gt6  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks :-) Yes the engine fitted straight in to my MK2, the engine mounts were all the same. It has made a very nice increase in power, very noticable :-) Good luck with the Jetta conversion

    what 16v head do I need to get in North America to put on the ABA block to make an ABF engine? I know it has a different pistons and timing belt but I want to get rid of my 1.8t for an ABF, turbo it someday but just a real ABA to ABF conversion. Which car can I get the head from? I know you can use an Audi 16v turbo head but it lowers the compression ratio a lot I've heard. That's an awesome engine, where could you even get that intake manifold? order from a UK recycling yard?

    • @mk2gt6
      @mk2gt6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +fockyoumang thanks for the comment, ebay UK has many parts available, I'm unsure of the head type, mine was from a 1996 MK3 2,0 16V, it had been in an accident got it cheap. It went really well. Unfortuantely I had to sell it recently to get a more sensible car for the family. I did a 0-60 in it at 6.5 seconds, which is quick really for its age. Good luck!

    • @fockyoumang
      @fockyoumang 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +DIY Mechanics the 8v head looks just like the American ABA head, but that block I think is the same as the American ABA 2.0L block, it looks just like it. The intake manifold is somewhat similar how it has four runners that go over the valve cover but they are tiny and slight s bend in them. I love turbo cars but it's always something with a hose or valve here or there. I'd rather do a turbo setup myself. If I install it or not, I would just rather have more options and room to fit a larger turbo. You guys did that in two days in your garage? That's some serious work, thanks. I'm going to look into an entire and on eBay

    • @IfYouBuildIt
      @IfYouBuildIt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +fockyoumang Sounds like you know your stuff! :-) It was 4 days in the garage and two of us. We broke the gearbox on the first test run, then 1 year later broke another one, it had a 16v gearbox in the end, which was solid, I do miss it, I replaced it with an A5 3.0 tdi quattro which is nice :-)

    hey man, do you have a list or some sort or break down on everything you needed from the mk3 to fit/mount/install into the mk2, did you keep the 8v petrol tank and pump etc?
    cheers man, i need help :L

    • @IfYouBuildIt
      @IfYouBuildIt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Phillips I wasn't the lead on this but I'll try and remeber, the tank and pump are mk2 8v, the engine was and injection is mk3, the ecu is mk3, the gearbox is mk2, coil is mk3 but rev counter works, see other video, clutch pedal and cable is mk2, drivehsafts and brakes mk2, all engine mounts were same I believe on both engines, the wiring loom was a combination of the two, the fuse box is mk2, clocks are mk2, radiator mk2

  • @ackiid

    Yo mate
    What type of gearbox did you use and what kind of shifter? I know it is possible to get 02a gearbox with abf and cable shifter, but there is some fiddling required and sourcing parts from polo/golf mk4 or something

    • @mk2gt6
      @mk2gt6  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just the standard 8v mk2 gearbox and peddles, just put the mk2 flywheel and clutch onto the mk3 16v engine

    I'm looking forward to do the same I was thinking i would need too change the gear box and the axles but you managed to do without so it might be easier this way. Did you need to cut in the car to make the timing pass? and do you need to change the fusebox as well? and was it hard to adapt the mk3 electric torch on the golf 2?

    • @mk2gt6
      @mk2gt6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Patale The ABF engine just needs the mk2 flywheel and clutch and you can fit the mk2 gearbox, no cutting needed as same engine mounts, we used the mk2 fusebox

    • @IfYouBuildIt
      @IfYouBuildIt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NietVerantwoordelijk the engine mounts on the abf are the same as the mk2 8v as it was a 1992 model, also I used the mk2 gearbox so the mk2 gearbox mount, easy swap mount wise

    whats the problem whit RPM? I got the same engine and same problem, that RPM is about 1700...

    • @mk2gt6
      @mk2gt6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ridiska when the RPM is up it is usually the ISV or an air leak in a hose

    • @ridiska
      @ridiska 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +DIY Mechanics what is ISV?

    • @mk2gt6
      @mk2gt6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ridiska Idle Stabilisation Valve, it's hiding uder the the black plastic that your spark plug leads clip to

    • @ridiska
      @ridiska 8 ปีที่แล้ว
