    You talk about the exploration being dull sometimes, and I somewhat agree, but have an alternative, too.
    To preface my idea, something else should be added to the game, and that is a sort of homestead, something in the spirit of Monteriggioni, but different. It should serve as more than a cash collector, there should be things to do there (like a theatre group that act out things you've done, and completing their quest line would get you a fake weapon which actually is quite powerful. Or a museum where artefacts you collect are on display, and progression as it becomes more and more magnificent.
    This could lead to more puzzles, and more side activities to do in the world, have puzzles and riddles and little activities that can lead to rewards that you can integrate in your homestead. Or unique weaponry/armours that you can put on display, or make use of.

      That was there in AC3 and Unity as far as I remember - and I'm not sure if everyone liked it. But yeah it doesn't harm at all. TBH it all depends on the execution. I didn't do the AC3 and Unity ones but I loved the Motherbase in MGSV and spent hours developing it, even Monteriggioni in AC2 felt very personal.

    The reveal of the cyclops didn't surprise me because the first time you pass that island on your way to Megaris at the start of the game Barnabas tells you that he saw a one-eyed monster there. So, I knew I would go there to fight it eventually. When the eccentric guy's questline pointed to that island I said "uh oh, here we go". There were about 160 hours of gameplay between those two moments.

      Cyclops didn't surprise me because some DLC or something dropped a Cyclops right on the otherside of the island you go to in order to upgrade the Spear of Leonidas. I was like "Oh what's that ?" Ran over, lvl 30 Cyclops wtf, better run away. Really ruined the surprise tone shift near the end.

    After watching this video I feel like someone who's opinion on food I value just gifted me a bag of Lays. I don't even think a game like God of War deserves an analysis this long. That said I still appreciate the effort, making me all the more surprised you didn't touch on the whole XP debate even once. Maybe I missed it but I'll share my thoughts either way. I'm on the side that believes Odyssey isn't a ploy to sell you a 10 dollar XP boost., as impossible that may sound to some. Though after trying it out I can't deny the impact it has on time spent. It's not neccessary at all in my opinion, but simply looking at the numbers _is_ jaw dropping.
    Let me just lead with saying that I've been a huge fan of AC for a long time and tend to sink way too much time into these games. As of now I have a combined play time of 347 hours over three saves. So at one point in the middle of that I was like "fuck it, if I'm gonna be sitting here enjoying myself I might as well drop a few bucks on that XP boost and see how much it affects XP gain and time spent".
    And affect it did. My first save is sitting at 139h and level 53. The one with boost enabled sat at 39h when I hit level 51.
    Now granted, I always tend to dick around more on my first time playing since its a all new experience and you don't have leveling on your mind. Yet still that's a clean 100 hours extra on a normal playthrough. Just damn.
    You _seriously_ feel the change of pace right from the start, especially at the start. It's interesting how having the boost enabled affected my whole mentality of approaching the game. You can explore the rest of Greece _way_ earlier than usual, and as a matter of fact, knowing that I would get more XP from every action actually compelled me to go out of my way clearing out every inch of land and taking as many jobs and bounties as possible. Kephallonia, Megaris, Phokis, Euboea and Skyros fully cleared out left me at LEVEL 40. STORY-WISE I HAVEN'T EVEN GOTTEN AROUND TO ATHENS AT THAT POINT, FAR FROM IT. It really is insane.
    And I stay by my point that the boost isn't neccessary in the least. Its a different experience for sure but that's not to say its a superior one. In fact, you might not feel like that in the middle of it, but already having reached max level with 70% of Greece still left unexplored really kind of takes the wind out of your sails. So yeah... just wanted to get that out there. Thanks for reading =)

      ciai_ Yeah my view on the whole “paying for XP” debate has changed recently.
      The most common critique I’ve heard for this game is that you HAVE to buy boosts to enjoy the game. You don’t. Sure you can if you want to, but I believe you could play through the whole game and never notice the leveling system if you didn’t know about the micro transaction option.
      I’ve concluded that this has always been in gaming. When I was a kid I had friends who bought game sharks. I spent money on “code books” to make games easier. I even had several dedicated guide books to help me. I would argue these were micro transactions too, but no one complained about it.
      What’s even crazier is that publishers have always targeted kids to spend money unnecessarily. Open a manual for any cartridge era game and flip to the back. You will see an ad telling you to call the helpline if you get stuck. A call that cost as much as an As Seen on TV psychic palm reading.
      People just need to spend money how they want to and quit pretending publishers turned money hungry overnight

I personally feel like that is enough for one to actually change ones build and adapt to certain enemies. Good video but I feel like you really missed that part. It was a mission but I am a player that alters and shifts playstyle to overcome. The level scaling for me is great. I hate how Ubisoft doesn't get any credit for giving most open world devs a way to design open worlds conveniently. If it weren' for Ubisoft what would guerilla games or insomniac or rocksteady do? TBH I think it is a little alarming how most devs have decided to use the Ubisoft template for open worlds, though I like how Ubisoft has increased the interactivity with environments and characters in recent games

    There are actually 3 cyclopes that you can fight. One was from the clip you showed and the other is on the island where you upgrade the spear. The 3rd one is in the south east in above a volcano. All 3 have pretty unique environments where the fight takes place, and I think they might even have different attacks.

  • @Ersalus

    One really Op build is the archer in my opinion. There is a spear you can find with 100% more dmg but it reduces your max heals to 25%. I thought its one of the worst engravings but its perfect for ranged combat.
    I use the legendary hunter armor set and all buffed to dmg. Every enemy is a onehin with the power shot ability there are only the really big bosses that can withstand that (and then kill you with one hit).
    But for example the boss fight from the blades-dlc that old guy you fight for a short time, I ended the fight before he could do a single attack... he ran at me, I shot him in the face, cutscene starts.

    I was curious as to what you thought of the little side stories they had to introduce the mythical creatures. Tbh my favorite ones are the minotaur and medusa, with the minotaur, when you first get to pepka, you think you're gonna get him but it's not him. Then as you explore the island more you find that boy and help him with his parental issues. Then the little love story with Medusa, it really honestly made me feel like that they meant Medusa to be the end boss fight/story. Not an end to the game itself but an end to the Atlantis story. idk I can tell the game has room to be better than it was but I still think, with as much effort I can see in it, it is a great game for people new to Assassin's Creed and to those who were burnt out on the older games.

  • @Pharaoh025
    @Pharaoh025 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Okay, I was eager to hear your opinion on one specific thing, and you basically went "Whatever" on it so... I'll chyme in. The whole "They let you join whichever side you want to join in the conquest battles" thing. I understand giving the player that choice. What I have a harder time with, is the fact that they present it in a way where your choice of siding with one nation or the other has no narrative impact. Granted, the hero does say in the very beginning, when confronted about his/her spartan heritage, "That was a long time ago, I'm a Kephallonian". A sentence which we are supposed to take as an excuse to switch sides willy-nilly in this grander war. But this is a story about family, a story about rebuilding what was lost (yes, even when you try to play it like a vindictive a-hole, which I tried to do on my second playthrough, the cutscenes still emphasize the hero's desire to rebuild a family, at the very least with the mother and possibly the sibling). So if it IS a story about family, a story about reconnecting with your roots, then you'd better give me a very good narrative reason to work for the Athenians. And the promise of drachmea just isn't enough of a narrative reason for me. The sad part is, the player is very much rail-roaded into switching sides constantly, because, while there is the obvious reward for accepting athenian sidequests (e.g. killing the Polemarchs and bringing their seals the to Athenian General), there is no reward for refusing to turn against your fellow Spartans when talking to the Athenian General. Instead, what ends up happening is, you end up failing the Athenian General's quest, and are SOL for staying true to your family's Spartan roots. Likewise, siding with one nation over the other and doing so consistantly (because, let's say, as a player, you feel like acting in a consistant way makes more sense...) wields no rewards, narrative or otherwise. And ultimately for me, the ability to be a turncoat with the blink of an eye, really detracts from the hero's main quest of "rebuilding a family". Simply because, it's hard to look your father, mother, and brother in the eye and tell them you want to rebuild a family, when all the while, you've been killing Spartans on the battlefield just because some Athenian officer offered you some loot for it...

    32:00 - I'm not convinced this critique is warranted as Odyssey give you option to respect your abilities instead of changing difficulty level. It does depend in which order players do this - do they respec first and then change difficulty level or wise versa? If you read guides/forum on bosses and legendary animals, the general advice is to use specific type of weapon and respec and if that doesn't work then change difficulty level. Surely some player will abuse this but for others it's an option to tune a game as you go.

    Sorry, but I have to correct one of your statements. Yes, Odyssey has way more islands with their harbours to anchor your ship, but that doesn`t change the annoying fact, that all the scathered, smaller islands or islets, don`t have docks and thus you have swim for miles, to reach them. Most boats are useless, since the current destroys them. It`s not an improvement, but a step back.
    And I miss the hunting-mechanics for whales or sharks, while being on a boat.
    And the "griffin" you show, is a sphinx. Completely different beasts, when the pun is allowed. Again, sorry to have to point that out.

    • @SlowWinterNuts
      @SlowWinterNuts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But you could just dock your ship just off the coast of an island and briefly swim onto shore, you don't have to swim that far to get onto them. And the boats aren't meant for travelling across long stretches of sea, but instead only for travelling between two short points of distance, like from one island to the next one that's nearby; Hell, I only had one instance where my boat got destroyed, and that was because I made the mistake of sailing from Athens onto a nearby island from a shore that wasn't the closest to said island.

      MiyuFull What do you mean swim for miles? Like the other guy said you don’t need a ship dock to go to an island. Just sail to the island, park your ship off the coast and exit the ship. It will stay there until you get back.

    • @MiyuFull
      @MiyuFull 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Island of Poseidon with the lion-temple, is an example were you can neither dock on the island, nor "Park" your ship off the coast, since the game won`t allow you to take your hands of the steering wheel. I could stop my ship, but I couldn`t leave the bridge, so to speak. I pushed every button ( minus the gain-speed-button ) and I couldn`t even wander around my own ship. Unless it`s a bug for only my game-copy, try it yourself.
      Try to park your ship on the open sea or near on the the tiny islands or near a underwater location and try to leave the ship.
      If you manage that, please tell me, because I am sick of swimming through turbulent seas, after 110 hours of gameplay.
      PS: I got to the Island via swimming from Chios, which wasn`t fun at all.

    hey sorry for the long rant but,
    there was a big fault with the leveling system and some of the quests specifically the mythic bosses. After I stumbled on the cyclops I wanted to hunt down more of the as soon as possible and having run into the location where the minotaur is I realised the little quest I got from the kid there had to be related. So I did that quests and the entire story to unlock the labyrinth and all of those quests where around level 39 if I remember correctly, My character was a around that same level or a few levels above it so it seemed like the perfect time to do this. Now I enjoyed that whole story and did it in one go eventually not checking the quest menu anymore and just continuing on. until... I got through the labyrinth and met the Minotaur. Now I saw him crush a woman or something and got all hype up for the fight but then the cutscene ended and he was level 50. apparently the last quest in that long story was suddenly 10 levels higher than any of the other quests in that story. If the dificulty in this game came more from the movesets of enemies I would have no problem with that, It would be harder but I'd have done it. but the way this game's leveling works made it so that he would kill me in 1 or 2 hits depending on the attack and i wouldn't even see a visual change to his helthbar after 10 hits with a hammer. On my best try I somehow survived for 40 minutes and got him down to maybe half health. I eventually gave up and came back to it only when I was level 60 to make sure that dumn bull would suffer.
    this whole rant to show the massive flaws in leveling systems like this, it completely took me out of the experience and got me mad at the game, and not in a ds3 kind of way where you get mad because you know you should have rolled or hit at a different moment, more in a ds1 kind of way because you somehow got hit by a boss stepping away from you.
    I can accept tht if I go to an area I'm clearly not supposed to the game punishses me for it but this massive gap in levels in the same story is really jarring. It's like the game is saying "oh you like this story and you're invested in it, great, here's the rest of it, oh you want the ending now? oh you cant have that until you grinded 10 more levels." It just doesn't make any sense

NG+ has a completely different feel to it because you truly really can explore any of the map once you leave Kephalonia. Unless something is locked behind story progression you can defeat any boss or enemy in your own order as well. Medusa is supposed to be one of the lasts encounters of the game normally, but in my recent NG+ play through defeating her was one of the first things I did.

    Good video. A few things, Luke. 1) synchronization point system ties in to the mythos of the Assassins. But you already know that. The fast travel points have huge expanses between them loaded with lootable resources which are needed for crafting & selling. I'm surprised you didn't mention that. 2) Odyssey has a dramatically improved economy, compared to Origins. This ties in to the lootables found in the world. It also allows you to build your character for your play style. 3) Play style determines everything. You mentioned that stealth was less emphasized. I think that depends on your skill tree, and Play style/build. The Assassin build mitigates that. At least it did for me. It requires a decent amount of skill, which is a good thing.

    I don't know if this was written before some patches, but I find the comment on stealth at higher difficulty very inaccurate. • @NagaTales
    @NagaTales 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I've withheld this "comment" until the end to make sure you don't cover this, but there's a flaw in your criticism of the combat system, even though you touch on this aspect once or twice. And that is the three combat trees and how you build them, or rather how the substats on your gear play into how strictly or loosely tailored your stats are when combined with the skills you choose to take. I believe you've vastly undersold the power and versatility of the system and the huge impact it has on what approaches you can take to combat.
    You make an example of how you couldn't assassinate high level enemies in one hit, listing it as a drawback, without acknowledging until near the end that you played with a fire damage 'Warrior' centered build. As someone who plays with a heavy Assassin damage build, with armor and engravings tailored to make my assassin skills hit like trucks (or charging minotaurs :P), I can confirm that it is entirely possible to one or two-shot almost every non Boss in the game if you have the stealth advantage and have built for that kind of playstyle.
    The effectiveness of specific tactics is heavily tied to how you've tailored your Kassandra/Alexios, and I find it amazingly fun to work with. For me, while I focus on maxing out my one-hit damage with assassin abilities, I knew that open combat was inevitable, so I made sure to not only take Heroic Strike (an in-combat ability that uses your Assassin damage instead of your Warrior damage) but also a few key warrior skills and some extra Warrior Damage engravings to make sure I could hold my own if forced into open combat. To achieve this, I've had to give up a massive amount of Hunter Damage, meaning my bow is by far the weakest of my options, and I can never be really effective with it beyond a tool for setting things on fire, or hunting goats and deer.
    The point is that the system rewards players for thinking ahead and tailoring their armor, skills, and engravings to make the most out of their favored playstyle. And the fact that this is almost entirely decided by the stats on your armor and weapons, it allows players to collect multiple sets of armor, so they can switch their playstyle on the fly, even in the middle of combat. For example, while I have my highly specialized assassin set that I wear for most content, if I find myself in a forced open battle (like Conquest battles or Ship Boarding), I can switch to a set based on the Demigod armor and skyrocket my Warrior damage just for that fight, where it's impossible to gain a stealth advantage.
    I think you've done this system an injustice, making a point about being unable to assassinate targets effectively, and dedicating several minutes to that perceived problem, all while using a build that was never meant to be good at assassination. You spent your power budget on fire and warrior damage, which is fine! It's a fun playstyle I've seen plenty of people use to great success, but you can't then expect to be able to one-shot elite enemies with assassination damage you don't have.

    I absolutely love Black Flag but in Odyssey I just point my ship and go for the tea. I don’t care about ships in Odyssey. Naval fights are impossibly boring. You point, you shoot, you wait for fire arrows/spears to load, continue until ship is dead. Weather doesn’t matter, storms are purely visual, no gameplay difference.
    Boarding is as monotonous. Instead of different objective based on type of ship (kill snipers, blow up barrels, kill captain, kill 10 sailors, take down flag, etc) you have one objective - kill everybody on board. And why would you board anyway? If you just finish enemy ship, you get everything automatically. You can’t release crew to help your notoriety, you can’t take crew for yourself.
    And that’s pretty much extents to whole game. Odyssey fails to engage me. It’s very shallow and fake (or if you will: not fake! Not fake! Not really real, but not fake!) Odyssey looks tough and content reach but it really isn’t.
    It’s just a small game that stretched really thin.
    And that’s saddens me to my core.

    I highly disagree with your points on side quests. After 145+ hours in this game, and having saved probably hundreds of prisoners from forts and/or bandit camps, I can safely say there was no passion put behind most of these side quests. They're mindless fetch quests half the time. It's like they wanted to make great quests in the beginning of the game but lost steam as they went along, just take Legacy of the First Blade for example. Is there any greater display of developer burn out? I'd argue no. That DLC singlehandedly made me feel like I wasted all my hours playing this game and I still haven't fully recovered from that feeling.
    Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Odyssey. I mean I 100% everything that's yet to be released, and I'm level 99+ too. However, I'm not afraid to critize this as I think it's a horrible Assassin's Creed game, and the side quests all in all are not worth replaying on NG+ since most of them weren't good enough.

    HP for the enemies is way too large. I want to have fun in combat, not grind on one fucking enemy for 5 minutes. It isn’t fun
    The parkour as well is awful in this game which is weird because in origins it actually worked well. You could climb everything and it just worked. In this game... it just doesn’t. It’s odd
    I don’t really enjoy the armour system, I prefer the idea of getting outfits, but if you’re going to do sets like this make it like Unity. Unities customisation was incredible! Average game, but it did some good things!
    I think my number 1 problem with the game is.... there isn’t enough assassin/stealth gameplay. Say what you want man I don’t care. Where is social stealth? It doesn’t exist! At least the stealth in origins was actually there! In this game you can CLEARLY see the teams focus was on combat instead which is a shame.
    I love the assassins creed franchise, I fucking adored origins! But this game... if this is the direction they’re going then I’m not down with it unfortunately.
    I don’t think this game is bad, I’ve 100% the game. It was good! I enjoyed a lot of elements.
    I enjoy the naval combat, really good! Happy it’s back and I hope it stays.
    The story was actually really enjoyable for me, the idea that you’re the first person to ever stand up to the soon to be ‘Templars’ was amazing I think and a good addition to the franchise.
    The world is incredible.
    Graphics are insane.
    Side quests were fun (although a bit repetitive at parts).
    And finally the RPG elements, which I was really skeptical about, are actually well done! Works for the franchise.
    I’m hoping the next game is a Bayek sequel giving you the option of playing as Bayek or Aya (so the gender selection is still there) set in the entire of Italy. Yes I get we have been there before, but not this period of time. It’s completely different! If not this then I still want a game in Japan. Straight up.

      But the parkour in Origins and Odyssey are the exact same besides the fact that you can vault over most objects in Odyssey, as well as be able to jump off of tall places without dying; Although there are some surfaces that don't have any handholds on their surfaces, which makes it impossible to climb it, and there are some cliff faces that can confuse the game into thinking your'e trying to climb an unclimbable wall instead of a stepping/hopping point, although there were previous Assassin's Creed games that occasionally have that error.
      And the stealth in Origins and Odyssey are also the exact same, except that there's more tall brush in Odyssey that lets you stay hidden while standing, _and_ you're able to aim your bow in grass without getting seen, along with the fact that there's now a specific mechanic that lets you aim a bow from corners.

    I dont like the notion that changing the difficulty is a bad thing. Because the game is single player if a person decides to cop out on a difficult situation it will only effect them so it actually shouldn't be considered a negative since it's an option to help people through the game. Player choice in how the effects the game in a single player game should never be considered a negative

    A good video, but I'd disagree with you on two points:
    1) Having difficulty settings in the game is wrong in the slightest. Save the player from frustration or challenge if they prefer. Personally, I dropped the difficulty for one fight and I have no regrets, because that mythical boar was just made of suffering.
    2) The cyclops fight. It's okay, but: a) it's not unique anymore, it's been copy-pasted at least twice more since release as part of the post-launch content; b) at least one of its moves is bullshit and goes against basically the whole rest of the game (the grab - unlike pretty much every other attack/move by your opponents, ignores dodges and has range well beyond the enemy's animation, unless it locks the result in well before it hits).
