      Luke Stephens I still think Origins was the better game and I got the platinum for Odyssey.
      I hated the fact they held back a lot of story arcs behind the DLC when this game is supposed to be part of a trilogy.
      So only the hardened fans will get the full story, those who didn’t buy the season pass miss out on a lot of trilogy story.

He went this intensely into it as it is his style of content to do that for games on occasion; and because he is a self-professed Assassin's Creed fan. This is an entry of that franchise that is remarkably different from the others, building on the changes implemented by Origins. With all these factors combined, to me, it makes sense that he'd do what he has done. ;)

      Drawn out and repetitive. You just described every epic game ever made. That’s what we want out of games we like that have excellent gameplay. But the thing is if it’s repetitive that’s just you not being creative. You can attack this game from several different angles. The number one complaint ppl had about AC is it’s repetitive. Odyssey gives you different archetypes to mix it up and ppl complain it’s not an AC game. Ppl like this don’t deserve to enjoy a masterpiece such as Odyssey so I’m ok with the critics and haters.

      Quite the opposite for me. I remember very well, even 3 years later the major beats of the story. The theme music is one of my all time favourite pieces of music and instantly gives me flashback of sad drama that Kassie had to go through.
      I remember the clay girl quest, I remember the family reunion, I remember most of the cultist, I remember very vividly the first time I got to Delphi and the story behind it. I remember the "amazon" dilemma...

    In regards to the mythic monsters, they're a product of Isu artifacts. The artifacts themselves turn anyone unlucky enough to touch them into those beasts as a defense mechanic. Alexios/Kassandra are only able to resist it due to their bloodline. So, they technically make as much sense as the protag's super spear.

    • @ajaxdishbarx54
      @ajaxdishbarx54 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah but that's the main reason many of the older ac fans hates odyssey because in the orginal games if anyone that hasn't isu blood in them touches these artifacts they are corrupted but in odyssey they turn people into mythical monsters which breaks the lore

    • @Mr.SoulMusical
      @Mr.SoulMusical 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@ajaxdishbarx54 technically, corruption is a relative term as the artefacts also operate with the world and times that surround them. In modern times, it corrupts and controls the minds of people it touches because in modern times it's easier to defend the artefact that way. In the Greek settings when the items are also so much more powerful they corrupt people by mutating them into something the people fear most, hence why the mythical monsters get to exist. The artefacts make them "real" because the myths are what kept people away.

      I agree Ac Odyssey should have been an open world RPG set in Ancient Greece embracing the mythology that comes behind it. (Similar to God of War) They could have left the stealth aspect in however distance themselves from the Ac franchise. In my opinion the worst part of this game is the Ac part of it. I haven’t played the DLC but from what I’ve heard the Ac stuff with the Isu and what completely wrecked the lore. Without it Odyssey could have done its own thing and did it well. However I do disagree with the statement that it would not have done well. If it’s a good first party ip, it would have done well.

      Yeah I was pretty slow. finished the full main game 220h 16m 48secs (ignored most for message board and b/w quests since those are repetitive). Just because I keep being amazed with the environment and can’t stop admiring the sights. All trophies completed nonetheless. Alexios slept with everyone except Aspasia though xD I strangely enjoyed the grind here, the padding on this game was tolerable and wasn’t all that bad. I lingered a bit more and revisited sites after I unlocked everything because I wanted to enjoy the environment a bit more.

    When I started this game I was excited. The visuals, the world, that story intro....it all hits you as they want it to. Then I saw this amazing tomb, then I saw another tomb, then another and another....and another, all exactly the same. Same with caves....there were literally 3 maybe 4 cave designs, sometimes filled with water, sometimes not. All the same. Same with the camps....same setup of tents and watch towers. I never felt the copy and paste in Death Stranding, which Luke assured was lazy design, like I felt here.
    I was into it the first 20-30 hours. Then it started to drag. Then fighting both sides made no sense regarding the story. Then I reached about 70-80 hours. Then all of a sudden.....it was over. I hadn’t even killed half the cult, which was the main antagonist of the game, and the story was over. WHAT? The final boss was a choice? I went back and hunted down all cult members. When I got to the head of the cult, I’m given an option to romance the cult leader???? WHAT???? Then I killed them in one swipe of my sword. The end. There are some epilogue missions with the historian, but they were unrewarding, and again a soft ending that felt....just not exciting.
    There are things that are good here, but A LOT bad. I have no idea how this is GOTY material. Its an impressive looking world, but once you are in it for 20 hours, it all looks the same.
    I’ve never played a game this long, seeing it through to the end, only to be left with such an unsatisfying conclusion. The DLCs were weird, as they seem to only muddy the AC lore, almost as if written by a person who doesn’t know the lore.
    I wanted to like this game, but again.....Ubisoft just aren’t very good at writing. We celebrate the mediocrity of Origins story, because we are so used to this kind of stuff. Its sad. This just didn’t work for me.

Also, it managed to take the vengeance story, one which has been done to death in the AC franchise with no innovation, and apply a unique twist. If you think First Blade is a bad story, you probably have AC fatigue or you don't realise how much Origins fucked up the lore, leaving Odyssey to clean up the mess.

    You mention at 33:00 or so that the value of human life has been stripped. I want to counter with the fact that AC Odyssey is chronologically before the first tenet of the Creed, “Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent” was implemented. According to the wiki, this tenet was implemented by Bayek of Siwa after Gamilat, the leader of the Nabatean rebels in the Sinai Peninsula used the slaughter of innocents as martyrs to recruit more people to the cause. So it’s not a problem with narrative if Alexios/Kassandra kill countless people. They didn’t operate on the same rules as Ezio or Altaïr did.

      @lucmorgan7238 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That has nothing to do with it.
      The fact remains, both Kassandra and Alexios are inconsistent protagonists. Just like previous comment wrote, you can butcher an entire town, and on the next one you do their sidequests while choosing wholesome dialogue options, and helping everyone. And just when you're done with it you can go and kill everyone, nothing happens, no consequence, no notoriety, you might get some mercenaries after you, but with late-game builds you can almost one-shot them.

    • @JohnKidd116
      @JohnKidd116 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Luc Morgan They’re only inconsistent if you choose to play them that way. There’s no lore element forbidding either of them from massacring a town which is what I was trying to point out.

    • @steelfoot98
      @steelfoot98 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not about what “rules they operated on” it’s the fact that everyone you’re killing you’re just doing it... because. There’s no rhyme or reason to why you’re running around killing soldiers from either side of the conflict, assassinating random leaders who have no connection to the cult, starting battles where you arbitrarily choose either side. None of it makes sense, not even if they’re a misthios.

Once i played Orgins all that hate went out the window for both games. I love the new direction and had never played an RPG style game before, now i am hooked. The stealth in my opinion is done way better in Orgins and Odyssey than in past old Assassin Creed games. I have not played Valhalla yet but i am looking forward to it. I recently started replaying this game and began to look at it from a different perspective that made me really love the game, although I still believe it is heavily flawed due to repetitiveness and some design choices. I am absolutely biased because I am a major history buff and drooled when I heard about this game being in Ancient Greece. Having played and absolutely loved Origins, I came here playing it the same way only to be disappointed by the bad voice acting (dialogue in general half the time), odd design choices such as no shield, and of course the grindy repetitive quests you need to do to level up to continue the main quests. This game, for me at least, is best enjoyed as exploring the beautiful world, doing the REAL side quests (not the shitty formulaic ones from the boards like deliveries or kill 5 sharks), get progressively better loot, and blank the map in checkmarks by completing every location. Btw if you care about the war, just go with Sparta cuz i mean they literally won the war in real life

Origins and Odyssey have pushed the boundaries enough that they can add Japan into the narrative without upsetting any but the most -anal retentive- -excessively fussy- hard to please (nailed it!) players. I can absolutely guarantee feudal Japan is on their short list. It looks like they are crossing Vikings off their list, and that will put Feudal Japan probably right up there with some Ancient Chinese Kung-Fu epic at the top of their list.

    Look, I get that game mechanics and game theory evolve with the trends and changing times. *But IF a game is going to diverge from lore and canon - then it shouldn't be included in "that" universe.*
    Ubisoft could have made Odyssey anything BUT an AC game, and I think they would have been just fine. Overall, it has ALWAYS been the story that keeps fans of the franchise coming back. Odyssey broke a lot of people's spirit about the series. Unity had issues - but they were not a product of it deviating from a meaningful story in the AC universe. I get that some didn't like Arno's personality - or that the game started out *very* buggy - but I honestly never heard the backlash against Unity for breaking lore like I have with Odyssey. *It could be that Odyssey has no Assassins or Hidden Ones.* The game-play with some of the mythological characters felt gratuitous - as if Ubisoft saw a trend with God of War and wanted to duplicate that success. 🤔 I would have been FAR happier with Odyssey if it had been marketed honestly as a Spartan mercenary game with a little bit of AC thrown in.... I blame myself for not picking up on the signals that Ubi was sending without actually being forthright that they just wanted to monetize a gaming trend in their own way. A unique IP or a spin-off IP would have been more honest.

    I appreciate everything you said in that first section! I just finished the game and both dlcs and I gotta say, it might be my favorite in the franchise overall. I watched like 4 different channel reviews after finishing and these people couldn’t say one good thing about the game. I was like am I going crazy? Am I the only one who thoroughly enjoyed this game? Am I the only one who isn’t caught up in what this series was a decade ago vs. the new direction they’re going? It’s like they made all these changes cause critics and fanboys had all these complaints. Like this series is overall waaay better now! Back before AC 4 I felt like the story, (which was phenomenal) was the main reason I played the game. Like I could literally finish a game in 2-3 days because it wasn’t especially difficult to get through, nor were side stuff that Interesting. Now having so much content to explore and do really is turning me a fan all over again. I don’t understand when people say the game ended with Desmond because of all the mundane present day stuff that happened between AC4 and Syndicate. I really love this new story arc and delving into the mystery that’s been surrounding the Isu since they were introduced. Although they should probably work on Layla’s personality a bit. I was really liking her until her bizarre antics really started coming out in the Fate of Atlantis. Not sure if they want us to start turning against her now or what? Very mixed signals. Other than that, fantastic game and my favorite in the series.

In my version, Nikolaus just showed up and revealed that he still lives. There shouldn't be any tangible reason for Stentor to believe that Nikolaus is dead, but the game still treats this like a major reveal.

      Nikolaus calls you,after you spare him he basically disappears,so you are the last person to see him and you are a mercenary,they just conclude that you killed him;Because why would the grand spartan general just disappear?

    My main gripe with Odyssey is the fact that Atlantis was first introduced in Odyssey, and not Origins, despite Herodotos AND the Egyptians stating that Egypt was a colony of Atlantis.
    This is a well established fact that the world seems to forget.

    Dude, I just figured it out. They’re just remaking the old assassin’s creed games just with an open world RPG style.
    If you think about it, assassin‘s creed one is somewhat similar to assassin‘s creed origins? It’s like the birthplace of what we know as assassin’s creed. Then assassin‘s creed odyssey is just the same as assassin‘s creed four, just with an open world RPG style. Assassin’s creed Valhalla reminds you of assassins Creed three; think about it, you’re big, you’re buff, you’re part of a tribe not that different from the Indians. You literally go to America in that game!

    This game has a grasp on me and I hate it, I am 100% an AC purist and hate that this game has the name plastered on it… but I can’t stop coming back to it every year and idk why??? I think it just tickles the itches in my brain for mindless fun

    Just started playing this game for the first time recently I only had about 80 hours in And I still can’t get enough. I’m not playing it as an assassin’s Creed game. I’m just playing it as a RPG with an assassin’s coat of paint on it and it is one of the best RPG’s. I played in a while. I can feel attention to detail every scene dialogue line.

    I'm 11 minutes into this and you're making me want to play it again.
    Odyssey is one of the best games I ever played, and I've played Witcher 3, Streets of Rage 2, Metal Gear Solid PS1, Ghost of Tsushima etc.
    Odyssey is absolutely beautiful, the story is brilliantly told, the acting performances are spot on, the set pieces and cut scenes are jaw dropping and the combat is very cool.
    All set it Ancient Greece. 9/10 for me.

    Great critique, I loved Origins a lot and really enjoy the new direction they have taken the series. I played AC1 and some others, but didn’t enjoy them too much until AC3 and open world. The Unity DLC was alright, but didn’t enjoy Syndicate at all. Enjoyed Black Flag, and got Origins on sale, it’s an absolute blast, because I’m a huge history and rpg nerd. Looking forward to getting lost in Odyssey for weeks..

    I’m not gonna watch 3 hours but I like it. Just started playing assassin’s creed games in 2023 and played origins, unity, then origins. Had fun with all but I did like unity the best.

    On your point of the main character killing thousands to save their family, I thought of this too. It reminded me of the definition of love in Vinland Saga. Love is discriminatory. There’s a lot of people out there that would do terrible things to other people to benefit their own loved ones. I don’t really have a point, but it was just a thought.

    best thing about this game imo is the explanation for the mythical creatures in Greek mythology. It is awesome and plausible , provided you're an AC fan. hehe

    That mission with the family that have a plague is one of the most interesting missions in the game the fact that your decisions actually matter that’s the one thing this game got right was your decisions actually matter

    About fast travel - did you ignore the fact that you can also fast travel to your ship AND any port you've been near to? Being able to fast travel to ports doesn't force you to synchronize and activating them to be available happens from a very generous distance away (I often hadn't even been to the port itself).
    As a second point, you missing a synchro point is your own fault, you should never leave an area before going to them all. The game even incentivises this by having Ikaros' "ability" level up after a certain amount of synchros.

    I just found your video and i am very happy with your review. to me this game might not be the most traditional AC, but i consider it a masterpiece. And having played many many hours of Valhalla as well, i am happy, that Ubisoft did such a great job with this game. Having a passion for greek mythology this is really the greatest gaming experience i have had so far.

    AC ODYSSEY is my favorite in the series. I'm replaying it now. What a phenomenal game! It's difficult to even stop playing. Already level 60 and far from being done with the story and regions on the main map. With all the DLCs, I wonder how high of a level I'll reach! Love Kassandra and hope we see her in AC Mirage! Next, I'll be replaying Origins which I love as well!
