Assassin's Creed: Origins - DLC | A Critique

  • The season pass for Assassin's Creed: Origins was initially released for $39 and contained: The Hidden Ones, The Curse of the Pharaohs, 500 helix credits, and the Centurion and Horus equipment packs. While I don't usually discuss major DLC releases for games that I critique, I was so interested by the latter story expansion that I decided we had to give it a shot. This video is the result of playing through the expansions for roughly 20 hours and the analysis of multiple hours of interviews done by the development team. Please enjoy and leave any thoughts you have below!

    I am probably in the minority here but of the two I preferred the Hidden Ones as it was like a continuation of the main game in that it was about the early days of the Assassin Brotherhood and Bayak learning more about the Order of Ancients (Templars). Curse of the Pharaohs wasn't bad in that sort of Undead Nightmare sort of way where you have a mostly grounded single player that has a DLC that makes supernatural elements that were either a very minor part of the main game or didn't exist at all the main game the focus of the DLC. Curse of the Pharaohs was fun but ultimately just didn't do it for me. Although perhaps I played both DLCs for Origins right after doing a completionist playthrough of the main game so maybe I was just burnt out on Origins at that point. Either way excellent game and two excellent DLCs.

    "I'll gladly give you content tommorrow for 40 dollars today" is pretty much how I've always viewed season passes. And I never pre-order unless it's a game that I know for sure will turn out good and the bonuses are good enough.

  • @LordofBroccoli
    @LordofBroccoli 6 ปีที่แล้ว +143

    I love how Ubisoft keeps cramming Ezio's soundtrack into every new AC, almost like it's the only AC OST that anyone remembers...
    No season pass will ever be as good as Hearts of Stone & Blood and Wine. I would've shelled out $60 for that season pass because of how good and original it was, even if Blood and Wine clearly needed more time in the oven. AC Origin's season pass was OK, the story was average at best, but the visuals and locations elevate it.

Entertaining, knowledgeable and informative, relatable, trustworthy ... your usual qualities back then already on full display.
    Btw, I also found out that the first vid of yours I watched was "The Last of Us - A Commentary" from July 2017 which luckily wasn't taken down after all. I like to think, that experience made me subscribe immediately, but I simply don't know for sure anymore.

    I really love your videos and would support your Patron if i had some spare money. I agree with you overall that the DLC should be looked at by the content they give vs hours of gameplay. If I get 14+hours of DLC and the story is lack luster and dry, then what is the point. I perfer the in depth stories and character development of what has been developed and what will be developing. I think Ubisoft does look at past developmental issues and does address them and builds upon a stronger game overall. Reason is just a limit . And this is ver clear especially now that we are in imagination age where what we think can then represent and make come to life and hopefully will stay true as we reach intelligence age. I've been debating with myself rather I wanted to buy dlc or not (I'm one of those people finicky/picky over buying additional content especially if it feels like it should have already been in the game). Most I've ever spent on dlc was 10 bucks and it was for an indy game. I'm mainly a stealth/story/exploratory player and while some fights are fun, am not really a fan of combat in these games, preferring a more stealth approach to missions. I know one of these is more combat heavy, so I wonder which one I would prefer.

    14:50 - Tutankhamun was actually a rather unremarkable pharaoh in the history of ancient Egypt. The only reason he became so famous is due to the fact that the archaeologists that uncovered his tomb died a few years later, thus spawning the legend of the curse of Tutankhamun.

      I only heard the rich English businessman that financed the archeological expedition of Carter died from pneumonia or dust sickness when he visited Egypt to see the graveyard.
      hence where this supposed "curse" comes from.
      but yes, Tutankhamun was pretty unremarkable and died very young. inbreeding and sex without siblings is a hell of a thing.

    Sorry I can't agree with your statement about the bosses. I played on hard difficulty and had to scale down for the last boss fight to normal difficulty, because the boss just had an unfair attack. It's the one you see around 28:00. I don't know what the difficutly was for you, but the boss did nearly exactly this damage on normal difficulty, while I was on max level and had a maxed out armor. This is just stupid. Not to mention that this move has a bad hitbox. If you try to evade, so that you are to the side of the boss, it still hits you (comparable to Sir Alonne in Dark Souls 2 while not being that problematic). It was really, really bad. I can't even imagine, what would have happened, if I had stayed on my original path (which was to be an assassin, not a fighter). This fight would have been undoable for my build, which is bad when the game tells you, that you can play however you want. So the argument "you have to approach the game intelligently" is just nonsense, since the designers didn't care how you approach the game. The boss can still nearly kill you with maxed out items and on normal difficulty. This is just stupid and I don't see how anyone can defend such a system.
    I don't even want to go into the problems the story has in both DLCs (to be fair, the story was weak in the main game itself so I should have expected that). I stumbled across the video since it discusses the DLCs and not the main game on day 1. But I am surprised how they can be valued good with such huge flaws. But in the end, it is an opinion I guess. I just find it interesting that these flaws are not really mentioned or even said to be a good thing.

    Tbh, I genuinely preferred Hidden Ones over Curse of Pharaohs.
    CoP was waaaaay too long for my taste for a DLC, which wouldn’t be a problem. But it was also repetitive asf. I bought it only because it was on discount. If I had to pay full price for it…. I probably wouldn’t pay a full price for it. 😂

    Best Review so far. I just finished the game dlc.
    Hear me out, I just finished it and honestlty the dlc was good but to short. Ubisoft had a huge chance on making the story longer and involving more about the Hidden ones. Take for example they could start with making it more stable and secure for the hidden ones in the peninsula also Bayek should be able to send assassins to missions. Also there should be missions Olving recruiting. Everything Assassins Creed 2 offered and the previous should be put into the dlc.
    The DlC now is more about Bayek helping and making it more secure for the organisation. But where is the content were you actually try to build up the organisation. You know, buying and upgrading an outpost etc. Also sending assassins on missions. More Campaign story about starting and upgrading different outpost in the city and in the Mountains. Also we need a character or two that had more in depth story. Also Amunet came back but we barely saw anything of her except of two missions.
    I compare it to the Witcher series now since Ubisoft tries to build a game like that. The dlc's for witcher are huge with variuos in depth characters and it takes its time to tell a story. The Hidden ones is a good one but to short and they barely scrathed the Surface.
    I hope we will see more of Bayek and the organisation, this for me was to short and plain. It should have been a deeper story with more functions on how to Control the organisation. Also put in some missions were you are not alone on killing someone. Where you and a small Group should kill someone or set traps etc.

      That one thing I loved about Brotherhood, I wish the other games would have done. I love training up my assassin's and sending them on missions. With these later games having such heavy rpg elements I'm surprised Ubisoft didn't expand on that mechanic from Brotherhood.

    You said they didn't make an excuse for when the Pharaohs were there. They did. Bayek says to both the plump witch lady and the goofy thief that he thinks all of the Pharaohs and the other worlds were just side effects of the Apple of Eden, or whatever they called it in this game, making him see these things that he didn't believe were real.

  • @adis3202

    Instead of $40 for one DLC you wanted and one you were only okay with, wouldn't it have been better if you just bought Curse on its own and saved $20? Unless those Helix Credits and equipment packs made up the difference...
    You essentially just pre-ordered DLC. There was no way in Hell that they hadn't already planned and begun work on the two expansions by the time the game went gold (hence them selling a season pass included with certain editions of the base game). There's no question of you "fronting them money" because the DLC was budgeted for before the base game had even been finished. Doing otherwise would be a boneheaded financial decision.
    I'm aware that games like Prey and Horizon: Zero Dawn only had their DLC made after the game was shown to have an audience, but I'm certain that AC:O doesn't fall into that camp. The mere existence of a season pass is proof enough that Ubi had thought the DLC through and were going to put it out regardless of people buying the season pass beforehand, if that makes any sense.
    I'm not sure that a season pass is a sound investment. It's never going to be out of stock (the only reason I'd ever pre-order anything physical) and there's no assurance that the promised content will even be any good...
    In my opinion, it's better for customers to wait for the DLC to come out in it's entirety and then decide what parts of it are worth buying, if any. If all of it looks good, a season pass can nab you a small discount overall, but that's all the benefit I see in a season pass.
    Edit: Corrected $15 to $20 for the cost of DLC

    "Mystery," "Secrets," "Additional Bonus Level Content," "Unique Outfit" "Cool Sword"... Yeah I'm not falling for those catchy words this time around. Most of the cool content you had to pay for... and grinding the grind, to try and get the "better" cosmetic items, really wasn't worth all the time. Cosmetic items are cool and all, but really they are only cool looking, and that's just about it. There is no added bonus to attaining items, that really give the character no added special ability or perk whatsoever. The new rpg element... is all pretty much hype. Compare Diablo 2 or even Diablo 3 weapons, outfits, items, etc.... to the Assassin's Creed dropped wearable, usable items. By far there seems to be no comparison whatsoever. I think that Ubisoft is taking it easy, and slowly putting little by little elements into each new game, so too many drastic changes don't upset devoted Ubisoft players. The stealth element really was the key thing, that I really enjoy about the whole entire Assassin's Creed franchise. I just hope that button mashing fighting, skills, etc... don't ultimately replace "the actual assassin" in Assassin's Creed.

  • @alyseleem2692
    @alyseleem2692 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Curse Of The Pharaohs fully convinced me that Assasin's Creed would've been much better off as a fantasy series rather than science fiction. That doesn't mean it should be changed now, it's a bit too late for that to really make sense, but I believe it would've been better.
    As an Egyptian myself and an avid reader of mythology, the amount of references to myths in this one kept hitting me in the face. Pharaoh's Shadows were akin to Ka,although their name would imply a closer relation to Sheut. The Anubis warriors were apparently inspired by an Old Kingdom myth of an Anubis army in the desert, threatening divine punishment, as well as the role of Anubis himself as protector and former ruler of the dead( Also Old Kingdom). Aten was an extension of Ra- Horakhty,original ruler of the pantheon before being subverted and merged with Amun. The Duat is an in between place,but in a different way. It's technically your road to the afterlife. Plenty get lost on it. The human headed birds are Ba,a soul's self given form.
    I was disappointed we didn't get to explore the Pharaohs more. I wanted them as actual characters, not just boss fights. There really was a lot of potential story wise,especially with Isidora.

  • @DaemonJuice
    @DaemonJuice 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Was a bit too fantastical for me. No one is having chats in the duat 😂. And the whole pharoh coming back to life thing is laughable
    The part when Bayek gets wrecked on acid and thinks he's fighting a giant snake was alright though.
    Decent if it was any other game so let's keep it grounded people or come up with a new IP

    I don't think its unfair to expect a game to take care of you having fun, its just that Ubisoft games suck at it. My favorite rpg ever (FF7) does that a lot (there are some elements of freedom, but most of what you do is pretty fixed).

  • @GalacticLobster

    About halfway through I stopped watching because at that point you weren't talking about the value of the season pass but about the historical accuracy it and how excited you were about the period. Which made it seem like you wouldn't be able to judge the value objectively anyway. You could have easily split this into two videos on different subjects. Also I am at the 18 minute mark and so far you really only said that season passes are common, they are usually made from content packs of varying sizes and that Witcher 3, Fallout 4 and Origins had similarly structured season passes. You could have said all of that in a much shorter span of time - you keep dragging on and on about the same piece of information when everyone already understood your point.
