I don't think that Shadow Gambit developer Mimimi closed because of poor sales, as I understood, they just wanted to move on to other things. I bought Shadow Gambit full price btw and didn't regret it...everything Pirate themed I am always down for...except for Skull & Bones...if it were FTP I would take a look at it, but I don't pay full price for a DOA GAAS.

You know who I feel sorry for.. Undead Lab making State of Decay 3 cause the original promise of The Day Before was basically what they were building and it makes me wonder if the reason we haven't seen it recently was because they saw the original promises of The Day Before and went back to the drawing board. Thinking they would have to at least meet the same level of standard that The Day Before was promising to even be able to compete.

Fntastic invited us to take part in a test task of writing a soundtrack for their game. The task was formulated as poorly as possible and with contradictions, and they gave 2 references, each of which is different from the other and not similar to what was in the task text. As a result, we were not hired, and, of course, the task was not paid for; they chose a person who did not even try to somehow fulfill the points written in the task, but did something completely different: an ordinary trailer track.

I think this case was never about the brothers even wanting to make a good game. Just about earning money the fastest possible way. And “making” a “video game” simply being their chosen method to achieve that goal. The fact that they also tried to promote a remote collaboration software in addition to their game seems to indicate that these brothers have an amoral entrepreneurial mindset. Meaning this was probably not their first, nor last scammy business venture.

One thing that is worth mentioning though is that it's almost impossible to calculate a developer's net profits from these sort of public facing numbers when a publisher is involved. It's entirely possible that all profits from The Day Before went toward the publisher's recoup, and I've known of contracts where the developer received only 50% or less of the net in royalties even after recoup (and that's before taxes).
Which isn't to defend Fntastic at all, mind you, it's just to point out that if this were some alternate reality where they weren't dragging entire carts of red flags behind them, the claim that they haven't seen any money from TDB isn't at all unbelievable. And while in this case I have no doubt that Fntastic made off with a large sum of money in some form, you unfortunately can't assume that a dev sees 70% of whatever their games make on Steam, unless they've self-published and have no overhead to speak of.
Again though, this isn't to absolve Fnatical because likely most of whatever the publisher invested was pocketed anyway, given the state of the game.

The gaming market is so oversaturated nowadays, especially the indie and small developer scene. They used to be a novelty before, something to check out in between AAA releases. Now it feels like your Steam page is bombarded with them. I have so many games that I have bought but just haven't got around to playing. Even hardcore gamers are feeling fatigued because it feels impossible to keep up with every single new title. So even if a game is an amazing, GOTY contender it's almost impossible to stand out without a AAA marketing team. It'll just get lost in the sea of games on the Steam storefront.

    • @Elite02k

Meh. Small dev teams have produced AAA level games with almost double the time. The problem with gaming is when the studio developers, the financial backers, and owners of the studio all have conflicting interests. There has been 2 or three fntastic developers that have spoken out about how every time something was added to the game that the developing artists did, the owners wanted it changed or removed.
It probably would've been a better game had the owners gotten out of the way and allowed a team moderator to do their job and lead the game without restraint. We seen this with irongate and valheim, how they let their team do whatever they want with a team leader to oversee the projects, and they are constantly checking their forums and reddit pages for player opinions to make the game better.
7 days to die has the opposite problem where the fun pimps actively dismiss player concerns like lack of base building varieties because tfp don't want to you be able to play but a few certain ways.
When a game fails, it's very rarely the development teams and more of the owners/financial backers picking fights with the dev teams.

But not all users will request a refund which means some money will go to these scammers and some already has. I wish Steam took the measures to reverse every cent away from these scammers back to the customers. To see the wish-list numbers, purchases, and player count numbers that they saw, receive all the attention that they got with all the red flags being discovered, and STILL pull it off is troubling. The size and scale of this scam made me wonder if this was not some money laundering scheme.

Actually, that's a whole new discussion brought to the table that I think should be brought up.
Nostalgia-based, immersive, difficult, overall really fun games, with good gameplay and way better actual graphics than this shitshow of a game somehow couldn't even get within a few THOUSAND players of this game, the game that everybody ALREADY suspected was a scam, and KNEW wouldn't live up to the hype, because of what had been shown.
It IS kind of suspicious that some game that had been DEBUNKED to have had fake reveal trailers, and boring ass gameplay to the highest degree, somehow became the most wishlisted game on Steam, and then have the most purchases out of most of the big games of the recent few years.
It's very plausible that the whole thing could've just been a money laundering scheme, but that all depends on the refund numbers, really, if over half the people who bought the game originally refunded it, I'd say no, but otherwise it's very possible.

Turns out a game can still be real in the sense that it exists and is 'playable' (barely) and still be a scam. As someone in the legal profession, I can shed a bit of light on the trademark issue. While every jurisdiction is different, in the United States, generally speaking, one can send a cease and desist for any reason. It's not a legally binding document and merely serves as a notification that one party believes they have cause to sue another party. It is not uncommon for companies to send cease and desist letters, without any actual intention of pursuing litigation, as the mere threat is sometimes sufficient to get what they want.
It's not clear to me in which jurisdiction the lawsuit of the calendar app took place, but I can say with some certainty that it would likely have played out that way in most U.S. jurisdictions as well. There are various different tests that different courts apply to trademark disputes, but a core element of all of them is the likelihood of confusion between two products. If they are substantially different products, the chance of confusion is low, and it is unlikely for a court to find trademark infringement is occurring.

Gamedev here. When we launch a title, there's a proportional element of reacting to player feedback. It might be what we are already expecting and have built our roadmaps to accommodate, it might be a course correction, or it could be a complete U-Turn. There's quite a bit of nail biting and fretting over player feedback when we press that big green GO button, because we're often too entrenched to really know how this thing we've poured years of time and effort into will be received. Could be great. Could result in layoffs. It's cutthroat. There's a lot of 'average joes', or games that just didn't find their audience out there, and I always encourage people to return to those titles, measure it fairly or just give it a chance, and question whether those negative first impressions you had were a kneejerk reaction.
This is not one of those times. This is not one of those games. This is an absolute bastardization of an industry I love and pour so much effort into, and I am genuinely sorry to any developer that was swept up in the promises made by these greedy brothers.

Nah it is merely a point of perspective. You as a person watching this video is already more engaged in video games than probably 95% of the total demographic that is actively playing video games. Yes this does of course include mobile accounts etc., but it would be silly to assume that mobile players could never grow in their interest and swap to a more core platofrm and video games.
Therefore you can compare this to, really any other product which runs on quality and not quantity (...usually), like computers, audio equipment, cars, smart phones etc... For some people this game might have been the only one they got algorithmed by and were like "wow, this looks awesome!" without having any idea that of course games are just "another" industry in the current day and age and might just feel too innocent about it because they got really sucked into gaming as a hobby more and more.
Maybe you see where I am coming from? I agree with your statement fully on pre-orders and just being fine with a lot of bullshit microtransaction bc people can't regulate their dopamine hits, a lot of people deserve to be ripped off in those cases imo as well.

Usually though, most people actually listen to criticism, an internal sense of analysis, and after a number of big failures move on to something else. These guys rejected all sense of criticism as fake, their was zero introspection, and the consistently pumped out bad product after bad product in such a way that you could Tell they didn't give a fuck about destroying lives in order to line their pockets. Hmm, kind of like their leader, so monkey see monkey do. I stand by the fact that most people don't want to wilfully destroy others lives, and to the extent that people do, either they don't want to accept the risk of blow back, or don't have the skills to pull it off. The brothers had just the right amount of narcissism to blow smoke up enough asses, enough sociopathy to keep running a scam they knew would harm others, the lack of intelligence to know how it could all come back to bite them and the stones to keep up a front, and the skills necessary to keep it afloat until they got their payday.

Not at all, the other devs I've spoken to especially other indie devs we've said this is painting us in a bad light and will be skeptical about purchasing games in the future even though like myself we strive for perfection. I test my gameplay after every single update over and over till I'm happy with the outcome, that small bit in the video about not being able to loot the box without being in a certain position would have infuriated me, So I personally wouldn't have stopped with that until that function was 100% pleasing. It seems like Fntastic just took shortcuts as they knew budget was running out and needed to get the game out ASAP before they went skint.@@newyou6210
