If you're not spending all your time being like "This isn't Assassin's Creed" and instead just enjoying the epic grandiose adventure that it is, then yes Odyssey is fantastic. I've replayed it quite a few times now.

The storytelling is silly even if you ignore the AC. There's A LOT of joke quests that are just absolute nonsensical drivel. That same kind of drivel even gets into the main missions every now and then.

I actually quite agree. Obviously it isn't really the "fault" of gamers when the game is called Assassins Creed. But yes, if forgotten and just played for what it is, Odyssey is quite good. I don't really enjoy the "tone" of the game that much and the overall voice acting (besides Kassandra) is not up to par. Other than that, the game is simply too bloated (even if it doesn't reach Valhalla levels) but quite enjoyable.

To add just one more point: In Odyssey, it feels like the people who made the game were actually totally passionate about the world they were recreating. And they put a real heart and soul into the game. You can tell it's a labor of love.

Yeah I had that same feeling with Origins (Odyssey as well). Both games feel like the world has a lot of love put into it. Origins even had the history explained mode. I loved both games and think Odyssey is the superior evolution of Origins and fixes most problems with that game. Yes Odyssey isn't really AC and that's my only problem with it as well as missing more possibilities for stealth play. Valhalla was just unbearable though. An awful story with awful characters. Throughout the entire story I was thinking why am I doing this? Why are they conquering England? To upgrade their small shitty village? And the worst thing is that it doesn't feel like you're conquering England. Towns like York feel lackluster and I completely miss the grandiose scale of the Roman architecture with the inferior english architecture around it. Eivor literally has no personality and it doesn't help that after 3 missions everyone throughout England knows who Eivor is and greet him as a superhero. Lastly they get the entire concept of vikings wrong. They are way too peaceful for them to be vikings. Vikings were raiders, murderers, rapers and enslavers. They took everything and burned down what was left. If that doesn't make for a good protagonist then don't make them the protagonists. They could have easily done a 'the last kingdom' like storyline with a viking who switched sides. I just couldn't get through the game and it took me over half a year to finish the base game whilst Origins and Odyssey I had finished in 1-2 months maximum.

It's incredible they literally build almost all of Ancient Greece with a huge open world map. The atmosphere in this game is amazing, that really immerse you especially when you enter a big city like Athens. Graphics and details are incredible. I really enjoyed the main story and historical figures as side characters. The map is so huge I spent months to completely finish the game. I have literally thousands of hours in Odyssey, still play it almost every day. I just love Ancient Greece, love the beauty of this game, the tone of the game is very fun and light and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Also you can learn a lot about Ancient Greece just observing people work, looking at the food you find at the market. They recreated Athens as close to how it was as possible, worked with archaeologists and historians to make it look and feel like you're really there.
The combat system is great and if you know how to build your character you can literally become a god, just a killing machine and it's satisfying.
The side quests are fun, some are funny, some are more serious but they never feel boring.
I understand that it is not the "classic" AC, like AC 2 type game but I think it's better, I hope we get more of this.

I fell in love with ancient Greece of AC Odyssey. It feels like going on a vacation for me, honestly. I liked sailing around, doing side quests, meeting historical figures, listening to music. I could almost smell the sea breeze and feel the sun on my skin as I was just exploring the world. I just vibe with it. As for Valhalla - it never feels like a vacation, it feels like a damn routine. It's a shame, cause I'm all in for norse mythology, vikings era, sagas and everything. The single thing I enjoyed in Valhalla the most is music, since they worked with Einar Selvik of Wardruna. But even the music gets painfully repetitive sometimes :(

Yeah rushing main story is not how the game is meant to be played there is so many systems you won't interact with if you only do main story and the side quest are honestly better than the main quest sometimes though the main quest is amazing as well. I love how some of the islands have whole questlines like in Mykonos or Euboea that can end sadly or happily depending on your choices. I honestly like ac odyssey better than witcher 3 in almost every aspect the combat, the traversal, the music, the skill tree and progression, the world itself and the protagonist. Its has some of the most satisfying progression I have had the pleasure of experiencing in an rpg. They balanced short term and long term progression perfectly imo.
There was no grind for me either I can't really see how someone can play this game and not get sidetracked for hours doing sidequests and exploring. It'd be like starting skyrim than only focusing on main quest never deviating from your course when theres a whole world out there for you to explore.

This should just be a standard feature in all games. I prefer figuring things out for myself, interacting with NPC's for directions or clues, and experiencing more of the world than just navigating a boring interface of icons to save time. I get that people are busy and maybe don't have the time to sink into a game like that, but who says you have to beat the game in your hour or two after work? Small progress is still progress.
Besides that, at least having the option so that those who want to save time or play efficiently can, but design the game to also allow those of us who want that depth of exploration to have it too. The ONLY reason they wouldn't do that is because the effort to profit ratio wouldn't be as high, which I don't think is an issue with Odyssey.

I actually kinda liked the Atlantis DLC only for the fact that it explained why you were fighting cyclopese and minotaurs in the main game: the Isu were experimenting on humans and the pieces of Eden that survived the destruction of Atlantis caused those creatures to show up. It added to the lore and history of the Isu in a way that I thought was very creative and blended well with the ancient Greek theming. It certainly has other flaws, but the bits of lore that it added were a welcome addition imo.

As a fellow Odyssey fan, I highly encourage you to revisit Forbidden West at some point. For all the reasons you say to not judge this game for what it's not, I say the same for HFW. You compared it to ER, which was fashionable given the timing, but ultimately unworthy of your typically circumspect judgement.
For about 90% of the game, HFW was everything I wanted and more from a sequel. I wasn't fully sold on the final story choices, but that doesn't change how truly breathtaking I found the bulk of the game to be. First, it was the most beautiful game I've played in 2022, still. I expect only Ragnarok will have a chance at knocking it down. Second, the side quests had a depth and care that is...simply the best in open world games to date. Everything that I loved about quest design from Witcher 3 and Odyssey and Skyrim and Dragon Age... this did it. Each story was different. Not hunting for 10 sharks or 5 bear skins. Deep, uniquely written side content that seemed almost UNIVERSALLY mo-capped. I lost my mind over how much custom mocap and voice acting there was. I've played about 95% of all available content and I only found two side quests events that didn't have some level of unique mo-capped conversation design. Just the most fantastic amount of love and care.
In terms of combat, HFW made some choices that I think made for a more balanced difficulty and methodology, but made it harder for you to cheese your way through by spamming traps and corruption arrows. Do I love that? No, because I really liked cheesing my way through mass robot slaughter with traps and bombs. But that change doesn't take away from what the game is, what it accomplishes, and how much I enjoyed it.
I loved Odyssey, and I love HFW. Give it another chance, and see it for what it is.

When i played Odyssey the first time, I was coming from Black Flag and Rogue. I took a long break because the removal of naval combat was a massive turn off for me. The mess that was unity on launch didn’t help…
When I heard odyssey brought back naval combat and was in Ancient Greece, I was sold! As a history lover, Ancient Greece is a gold mine.
For some reason when I first played it, I guess I got overwhelmed from the map and massive changes to combat compared to AC:4. I put it down for quite some time but around a year later I decided to give it another go and that’s when it CLICKED! I loved it.
Kassandras voice actor was amazing and you really start to feel attached, which helped a lot with immersion.
I realized the seemingly “bloated” loot system was actually really fun and made new loot always exciting. I never knew when I’d find the next amazing dagger for my build.
Ended up playing primarily assassin build due to the amazing abilities for chaining in the game and quick movement made stealth fun(Valhalla made the parkour worse, the character moves slower, and the abilities suck in comparison… massive downgrade). Hero’s strike was god tier with my pirate armour full heath crit build. Damage was insane.
An experience I’ll never forget and honestly one of my favourite games in recent times. Too bad Valhalla shit the bed and made you sleep in it. Playing rn and what a downgrade.

The NPC's in this game are mind blowing there is a whole economy. I've come across wine, sandal, bread, clay, dye, makers, butchers, marble miners, sculptors, artists, politicians, and you can see the whole process of each craft played out. side stories with historical figures. They put so much work into all that extra stuff that there is an entire mode where you go in and learn the history of all the crafts, temples, statues, cities, etc... fully narrated and acted out by a guide and then real photos are added in to the lesson to compare and show more history. I actually enjoyed the Valhalla side quests. They were a fun relief from all the grinding. Funn little events and stories that you could just live through. One favourite was propably the lady trapped in the tower. Turned out that it was actually a kinky role playing thing with the woman and "The knight in shining armour". If you misred the situation and attacked the man, he would leave, you would offer to guard the lady and another "savior" would come to help the damsel in distress. Then there was the warrior with a battle axe stuck to the forehead who had "some difficulties" to understand the situation he was in. You could leave the axe or remove it, which would of course kill him.
Valhalla had a lot of these comical moments scattered around that I enjoyed immensely.

I am glad this game is now getting a stronger reputation as the years go on. At the time when it cam out it was easily in my top 3 of all AC games and didn't understand the hate. After playing through again a couple of times it feels like one of the most symbiotic AC games. The 3 main story lines, the side quests and character arcs, the world, the mythology all link together so well it feels seamless. Unlike Valhalla (which I still really like) which had everything very segmented Odyssey feels like a complete game that almost purely exists within its own world. And the world feels living and breathing and always progressing which is a triumph considering the vast size of the map. You can pretty much go anywhere you want after the opening section (you might die) but nothing is really closed off. And Kassandra is one of my favourite main characters. Ok so maybe its not the greatest in regards to adding much to the overall AC storyline, but this makes it a better game on its own as its not constantly trying to tie back to the AC universe and can focus on what it did great.

The naming argument is always going to annoy me. It's just a name. It's a title on a box. Call me crazy, but a game should be judged on the merits of it's gameplay, not on it's name. DarkSiders made some pretty fundamental changes with each new game, finally ending in an isometric ARPG, and no one suggested along the way that they should change the name because the gameplay changed. It's still a part of the AC universe, it's still pushing the story forward however slowly, and it still contains most of the same elements. There are just more ways to play these games now than the extremely narrow way they had before.

    Great video!
I’m 41 years old, played some of, if not all what’s widely considered the greatest games ever made.. I got asked a question by a mate at work a few months ago, he asked me “Not the best game you’ve ever played, but what’s your favourite game” I thought for a while, then said, Assassins Creed Odyssey.. The realisation took me a little by surprise, especially when I named a reasonably modern game when I must have played literally thousands of games in my time. I thought about it properly later on and just thought there has to have been a game I’ve enjoyed more than Odyssey, but honestly, there isn’t.. It’s not without faults (If I was to be hyper critical, I could probably write an essay on the things that’s wrong with the game), but despite the warts, I loved and continue to love my experiences playing Odyssey.
I can 100% understand why AC fans would hate this game, if I was an AC fan and played a game that had completely changed direction, I’d be bitterly disappointed too.. fortunately I’m definitely not an AC fan, in fact, Odyssey is the only Assassins Creed game I’ve enjoyed. (I’ve played them all)
Greek Mythology, massive and beautiful world with small islands to explore, pirating, smooth and very fun combat, an upgrade system that keeps me coming back time and time again, a story (although not great) none irritating but actually likeable characters, fun sub stories and Mythical monsters all rapped up in a game that is actually quite historically accurate, it’s just fun! Perfect for me I guess!
The last thing I’ll say, I know they’re reverting back to their roots with Mirage, but I really did hope they’d have made Skull and Bones into a sort of sequel to Odyssey, keeping the same mechanics humour and content. Black Flag just doesn’t satisfy that pirating itch.

I could tear through a small army, or I could slowly take down a whole fortress one soldier at a time. I've now completed Origins, Valhalla, and finally Mirage, but Odyssey- Even if I may be biased- is still probably my favorite. I do think it's a good RPG game, it's just not a good *Assassins creed game*, but even then, it still holds up in the lore, and I even noticed a possible easter egg to Kassandra in Mirage. Because of my love of Kassandra in itself, the quest in Valhalla where you meet Kassandra might be the only real memorable moment in that game, other than Ivarr and Fenrir for me. (I have opinions on the entirety of the additions of realms in Valhalla, but this comment's already long enough, not to mention a year after this video was posted) Nonetheless, Thank you. A commenter on AC games that I can actually rely on for a good opinion.

A couple of years ago I decided to get back into the AC franchise starting where I'd left off a decade earlier, on Black Flag. I had an awesome time on BF and 100% the entire game and decided to keep going. I moved onto Unity and enjoyed my time with that. I skipped Syndicate because, in all honesty, I was very keen to jump into Origins to see how it was so different, and man, was it different. BUT, it didn't disappoint. I absolutely loved my time in Origins, and you're right, it wasn't like previous AC titles, but that quite frankly was irrelevant, as I had a ton of fun with it. Eventually I moved onto Odyssey and I can honestly say it's one of my favourite games. The setting is fantastic, the story is compelling, the actors are brilliant, and I had so much fun!
    TL;DR - I agree AC:Odyssey wasn't Assassin's Creedy, but it was still a brilliant game.

  • @Sarcasticron
    @Sarcasticron 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you don't do the side content in Odyssey, you are playing the game wrong. The designers puts an unbelievable amount of effort into a world that is both huge and feels very much alive. You're SUPPOSED to explore the world and do the side content. I never had any problem keeping up with the level requirements because there's so much to DO in this vast open world. It doesn't have the philosophical or emotional depth of The Last of Us or The Witcher 3, but I find myself returning to this game because the world is so goddamn BEAUTIFUL it's just a joy to visit. It helped keep me sane during the pandemic and now I'm on my second playthrough and it's serving as a wonderful break from the dreary winter going on outside. It's better than going on vacation and sometimes I just want to boot it up and enjoy looking at the sea. I won't say the game makes you think, but the developers have made sure that it's always enjoyable, and I love the fact that you get to explore a world that actually existed thousands of years ago (except for the fantasy elements). Classical Greece is a fascinating and historically important setting, whereas Valhalla is set in medieval England, which holds little interest to me. Egypt during the Roman era is an interesting place, so I look forward to playing Origins as well.
Ubisoft is still adding content to this game FIVE YEARS later, ant it has procedurally generated quests and world events that mean you can keep playing it forever if you like, and that's something I might do. I've bought a lot of other games that I think are quite good, but I almost always feel like I'd rather spend my time playing this one instead.

I do really enjoy Odyssey as a standalone Greek Mythology RPG. My biggest gripe with it this is that, for me at least, it’s not an Assassin’s Creed game. There is a different between supernatural mythology and science fiction. The Isu were not gods who ruled from Olympus or part of some wider religious mythology, they were simply a breed of more advanced humans with additional senses who garnered the human race into slavery. There are fantastical elements such as the apples of Eden and other objects of similar status, but it was all based in advanced technology. So, for me to straight up introduce magic into a series that never really had it is a strange choice. Again, I think Odyssey is a really good Greek Mythology RPG, but I think it fits poorly into AC as a whole.

    • @MrJordwalk
      @MrJordwalk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The thing is.... The Isu enjoyed a state of advancement so far above and beyond the Greeks comprehension that the latter can't be blamed for deifying them.

I absolutely love this game, i’m probably ~25 hours into it and am having a great time. The map design is outstanding and I’m constantly stunned by the game’s beauty. However, a couple bones I have to pick with it: 1, the game feels very grindy at times, and it’s absolutely impossible to just go through the main story in one go, a constant stream of side quests are a must. 2, while the map was incredibly beautiful and awesome to explore, the tiny scale of everything really threw me off. Big cities only being a couple hundred meters away from each other feels so weird. I would’ve liked to feel more accomplished after each adventure, rather than just a short 2 minute horse ride and a ton of synchronization points. I’d 100% sacrifice such a large quantity of places to explore for a more grand adventure experience, but all around amazing game 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

People who said Odyssey wasn't "a good AC game" are late to the party. That's what I said about Black Flag when it was new, but I still enjoyed it and loved the change of pace of a pirate adventure. The original series ended with AC3 and then Ubi spent years experimenting with new directions. For me, all the games between 3 and Origins were like wandering in the dessert with no direction and I lost interest. I love that they went back to the ancient origins of the story to reboot the series. They had gone too far into the modern era without telling us the back story. The open world RPG style was a great way to bring back original series fans who had given up with the stinkers of Rogue, Unity, and Syndicate.

Odyssey was reviewed favorably overall and has a Very Positive rating on Steam. It's just that a portion of the AC fanbase are incredibly vocal. People love to shit on Ubisoft and it's a huge trend with their games that fans love to shit on a new series entry, but by the time the next entry comes out, all of a sudden the older one was awesome and the newer one sucks ass. I'll use FC5 and 6 as an example. I remember seeing a lot of people dislike 5, but then 6 comes out and all of a sudden 5 was awesome and Joseph Seed was incredible. When 7 comes out, people will say about 6 "it had its flaws but it was actually a very fun update to the Just Cause formula and woah Gus Fring cameo"

Played this game again yesterday (actually continued my 5th playthrough, after taking a break from the game of about 1,5 years).
Went to a Fort to clear it out, because it's always fun (more so than in it's 2 siblings). Killed a few guards while sneaking through the location, left the bodies where they fell.
It wasn't long until 2 other guards discovered them, and they were talking between them the usual stuff when they get alerted (someone is here, find them etc). I was nearby, hidden, they couldn't see me. The alert status ended, so one of them went to pick up one of the corpses and carry it away, like they always do. But before he picked it up, he said: "I'm sorry, my friend!"... Left me O_O...
And another instance. I was sneaking around another fort, targeting soldiers with arrows. One guard was alone, standing near a bridge. Shot an arrow on the bridge trying to make it run and hide, like they always do when being shot at, even if they were hit or not.
But I shot a bit too far, so the guard was only alerted by the sound. To my surprise, it went over to the arrow, bent over to it and mumbled to himself something like: "It's an arrow... but it doesn't look like one of ours. There's someone out here" then he went on alert status.
Now THAT level of detail, you encounter less and less nowadays, especially in this genre.
Out of this trilogy, Odyssey is the one that mostly stands out, and the one I love the most!
I may be a bit biased because I loved greek myths ever since I was a kid.
But for a huge open world with many copy-paste assets, look-alike NPC's, small repetitive boring side quests etc the game is also peppered with special care proof instances, and details you can only see (or hear) while getting lost in it's world, and actually playing it.
I always hoped the dev team behind it would do another title.... but AC Valhalla was done by the Origins team, and it showed, because combat and fort "liberating" were NOT fun.
Ubisoft seems to prefer their style, which is quite unfortunate...
And now the series moves on with other devs. Here's hoping the upcoming titles take a look back and see what made Odyssey fun to play, and don't repeat Valhalla's mistakes.

Agreed. In something like Red Dead Redemption 2 the characters feel like actual people. In Odyssey theybehave like ridiculous two dimensional caricatures of people. And how this guy thinks that the side quests are as memorable in Odyssey as the best games of the last decade is laughable. It's like they have been written for a school project by a thirteen year old kid. I honestly can't clearly remember a single side quest that well. Comparing it to the side quests in Witcher 3 and the like is a night and day comparison. Ubisoft made a beautiful world, but it's just a bang average game and as you say, Indie studios come out with better. Valhalla is actually better than Odyssey in my opinion, though still not great, but at least the writing is a little less childish.
