    While the manga one is much better and a suited rival, the anime one has more of a slice of life into it and some more memorable feel to it. He should have shined more in the anime, the manga did him justice at least.

      Had he beaten Judai just once in GX I think that would have went a long way to solidify him as a really good duelist and a rival especially!

      He beat Edo which I was fine with, but I think Kaiba never won against Yugi officially with his own skill. I think it's fine. Same with Jack unless you count that flashback.

      Anime Chazz's achievements:
      1. Defeating Aster Phoenix.
      2. Giving Jaden good competition only in the 2nd episode which was their first duel, chazz was using Chtonian monsters.
      3. Defeating 50 duelists in north academy including their top duelist.
      4. Defeating Slade who had rare cards with strong monsters despite Chazz using a deck filled with monsters who have 0 ATK points.
      5. Getting Sartorius down to 100 Life Points.

      dunno, i prefer anime Chazz. Reading up on manga Chazz playing a bigger role in the manga before going into the series really hyped me up, but once i picked it up, I just got disappointed with the character.
      Manga Chazz: generic stoic rival who's really good at card games, has a character arc, that's a half-functional inversion of anime chazz and plays a vanilla dragon deck, whose coolest aspect is that two of his ace monsters got turned into synchro cards later on
      Anime Chazz: narcissistic bully rival with functional character arc of hitting rock bottom and picking himself up confronting his short-comings. plays several decks, all with a more interesting play style than manga chazz

      Hanumana Khan Hslf of those examples aren’t worth much. For example Slade has NEVER played duel monsters in his life which is exactly why Chazz was able to beat him. You say he gave Jaden good competition but he fueled Jaden 7 times and LOST all 7 times. Chazz was only really good against fodder and has a couple good feats against good characters but just as many bad feats against good characters

    I have to admit, I have never read the manga but from what I've seen here, I think I prefer the anime version. Chazz is one of my favorite characters all through Yugioh and the main reason for that was because he was a dork, but a dork that got some good character growth. I especially loved when he started picking up weak monster cards because he didn't want their spirits to be abandoned. He may bluster and yell about how annoying they are but he's probably going to keep all of them forever. I can even imagine him as an adult running some sort of weak card adoption service along while being a pro duelist (all while still yelling that he finds them irritating, as he takes another 50 abandoned cards). Was that part of his personality in the manga?

    • @Sugar-bz5np

  • @animemixer1
    @animemixer1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    On the "Chazz it up" vs "Manjoume Thunder" debate:
    "Chazz it up" is a catchy phrase, however, it lacks any actual meaning. "Manjoume Thunder" caries meaning and a pun with it. I will explain how it goes.
    Judai always refered to Manjoume without honorifics, to which Manjoume would tell him to use "san," meaning the Japanese honorific "san." Manjoume wanted Judai to call him "Manjoume-san" instead of just "Manjoume," as not using the honorific is seen as a lack of respect, something anime-Manjoume feels entitled to, at least at first. Now, in Japanese, what Manjoume says when he wants Judai to use the "san" honorific is "san da," which can be translated to "it's san" (as in "it's Manjoume-san to you) or "use san." "San da" sounds a lot like how the Japanese pronounce the English word "Thunder." As he climbed to the top in North Academy, the running gag of Manjoume exclaiming "san da" whenever Judai said his name without honorifics was used to give him his nickname. As he says "I am Manjoume," the other students, who look up to him, call him "san da/thunder," giving rise to this nickname.
    There is also the fact that he uses the "man" part of his name to great effect during his self-introduction. "Man" in Japanese is the word for "ten thousand." So when Manjoume says "I am one... ten... hundred... thousand... Manjoume Thunder!" his own name becomes the next step on the numeric sequence.
    In short, his entire fancy title in Japanese is a big pun, based on the Japanese numbers and weird English pronounciations. Essentially, what he is saying is "I am one... ten... hundred... thousand... ten-thousandjoume-san to you!" It doesn't carry over great in translation, sadly, but once you know it, I promise you will enjoy it more than the by comparison really boring "Chass it up" catchphrase.

      @ktt7027 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hey! thanks for explanation. I grew up watching it in English, so that's all I know, but when I see online him being called that I was so confused. When you explain it, it's very fun and makes so much sense! And yeah there's no way they could have translated it LOL. I'm just imagining 4kids suits gathering at a meeting, racking their brains on what his catch phrase should be in english

    • @animemixer1
      @animemixer1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ktt7027 I am glad my explanation makes sense and helped you understand it. Things like these are some of the reasons I watch in Japanese over English. There is more than just the 4Kids travesty in the dubbing, but also the sheer amount of untranslatable jokes that just won't work in English in any way. I'd always recommend watching a good sub of the Yu-Gi-Oh shows over the dub. It's basically a completely different show. Also, music in the original Japanese versions are better. Just search "yu-gi-oh gx ost" here on TH-cam, and you will find a great many soundtracks that 4Kids must have thought were too good for their version.

      I don't even see him as a rival in the anime. I think a key part of a rivalry is that both sides care about each other's opinions. Jaden did not care whatsoever what Chazz thought of him. Also after season 1 the entire idea of rivalry was abandoned and he became part of Jaden's group of friends.

    One of my favourite YGO characters of all time. His development over several seasons was one of the best. Literally reaching the bottom, his determination and willingness to go through the struggles until reaching new heights is just admirable.
    I quite love the anime version more because he literally represent the "never give up no matter what" mentality which imo is more relatable and inspiring in life.

I do like his character in manga more cuz yeah they really do his character justice as they should, but they both have their cool antagonist archetypes. Can't wait for more of your episode reviews!! No way, so what if his manga persona is a better duelist?? It's just a copy of the stone cold rival stereotype in YGO. Manjoume from the anime is really funny and charming, it's so different. He's really fun to watch even if he might lose often it's fun to watch him duel with his ojamas. I'm so tired of strong but cold rivals in YGO. Manjoume was such a good change from Kaiba. I don't want the same rivals again and again lmao.

      Shou/Cyrus is still soft and cries a lot. but for a completely different reason, which deserves respect, if not sympathy.
      Ryou/Zane/Kaiser is still a certified badass, but unlike in anime. in the manga he did not give into evil
      Osiris Teacher actually does her job, she loses a duel but it's the thought that count.
      It is dark, just like how Yugioh should always be.
      Overall, the manga is better. The only regret I have about the manga is Misawa was changed into a simp.

    I kinda like both the Manga, and the anime versions of Chazz. Though, I think you were a bit harsh with the anime Chazz's personality differences from Manga Chazz, the reason why he's like that in the anime is because of the way his brothers treated him. We don't see much of his brothers, but from what I saw Chazz's childhood didn't look like it was cupcakes and rainbows growing up with them pressuring him to bring honor to the family name. He kinda broke free when he went to North Academy, but when he got back his brothers were waiting. After the school duel was when he was truly free from them, his arrogance and jerkish attitude came from being raised with people that didn't exactly love him in any sense of the word. From just before Jaden and Chazz's school duel we saw Chazz break down with the responsibility that his brothers placed on him, implying that they practically ingrained a sense of "Have to win, Need to win, No Other Options, Make His Family Proud" in him from his childhood days. That's why he's like that, in the manga, we never really see his brothers. So we don't know if he broke loose of their influence early or something, Manga Chazz still has a bit of attitude though, especially in his first duel against Jaden. Anyway, just wanted to say that. Great video Dilan. Can't wait to see what the next one is going to be about :)

    Chazz was maybe not very successful during the main Anime story. He was about to duel Kagemaru together with Jaden and then all were like "nope we don`t need you here". (Hate the writers for this) But he dominated many filler episodes only made for him (Maybe the writers did have a soft spot for him). Also he was a beast during the society of light arc and acted more like a typical rival. All the character development made him very human and one of my most favourite Yugioh characters. He did lost eleven duels but he won several hundred duels. Something characters like Kaiba can`t say from themselfs. Of screen or not, still counts.

The anime version is funny and he goes through a few good character arcs, such as when he goes to North academy and returns to duel Jaden and we learn about his situation with his family. Then when he duels against his brother he shows that his style of dueling and views on cards change. Then when he interns for Aster and learns what it means to be a professional duelist. He also has some of my favorite duels in the anime. As for the manga version, hes very honorable and i love that he beat Jaden. He had good development and even went on to help defeat the final villain.

He had the best chatacter development and he used many types of deck and combined 3 of it later (VWXYZ/Armed Dragons/Ojamas) I think that's awesome enough. He also defeated 50 North Academia students, defeated Society of Light students, freeing them (also winning GX tournament) and he defeated his brother, Chosaku using 0 ATK point deck when the requirement were monsters under 500 ATK points
    Many people say Manjoume doesn't fit to be Judai's rival, Edo/Ryou would be better but... I don't think so. They didn't interacted much with Judai except dueling unlike Manjoume did
    He also defeated Edo in Season 4, and there was one duel where Manjoume supposed to win against Judai but he lost on purpose due of the order of his manager as Ojamanjoume, I always count that as a win anyway
    Overall, he's an awesome rival and an awesome character despite of his arrogant, stand-offish attitude. He may be a simp but I like that comic-relief part of his, it always bring smiles to me
    I didn't liked Manga Manjoume that much. It lacks so many things from his anime counterpart, which is why I like the Anime Manjoume more. Many people say Manga Manjoume is better due of the fact he defeated Judai two times. Though, Kid Manjoume is so cute to see

    I prefer Anime Chazz over the Manga Edgelord Chazz. I mean to me when I was reading the manga Chazz was the most annoying/worst part of the manga. I mean every time he showed up after the first duel with Jadenhe was basically a edgelord who showed up and gave nothing to conversation except 'AH LINE LINE LINE NO EMOTION'. I mean I get the cool headed part but damn show some emotions once in the while instead of trying to paint him as the never wavering person. I mean at the beginning his entire motivations was about his brothers, Jaden's master, and claims but we never revisit it ever. Most of his arcs are just 'Aw I lost, ok'. Anime Chazz felt more whole character as he had more to him as a person instead of just making him 'the rival character'. But that's my thoughts.

    • @Furycutter
      @Furycutter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Have to agree. Manga Chazz is a better duelist then his anime counterpart but as a character he's kinda boring (a common problem I find with the manga versions of the characters from the Yugioh spin off's).
      As mishandled as Anime Chazz is IMO he's one of the characters that got the most character development (barring season 3 cos no one got any character development in season 3 cos fuck you Jessie).
      SO yeah, Manga Chazz is a better duelist but Anime Chazz is a better character.

      Absolutely agree. Except the other rivals like Kaiba he needed to grow as a character and learned from every one of his losses. But like other characters he got more and more in the background because of new characters they needed to include to advertise some new theme decks.

    Yeeeees! I've missed this! Manjoume is such a... Special character when it comes to his two versions. I really don't consider him a rival in the anime because as you said, he was kind of a comic relief guy. Hell Kaiser will always be Judai's rival for me. Even Edo kind of was more of a rival. In the manga tho, Manjoume is DA MAN. More serious and mature, they treat character so much better. Glad you brought this back, Dylan!
    This is my personal opinion, but a few of the reasons I consider Ryo the rival: Defeats MC at least once (like Seto, the only rival we had then)
    Has a little brother and (I think but I'm not sure) it's older than MC
    His ace monster has a triple fusion
    Uses dragons. I know they're Machine type monsters, buy they're called Cyber DRAGONS, come on xD

    Second : in the manga judai lose for everyone ( expect his first 5 duels I think ) even after he use masked heros ( thought they are stronger than the normal )
    Three : manjomi in the manga used two monster ( light end dragon and dark end dragon ) as an effect monsters and these monsters actually are synchros

    Great video! I always thought GX had like 4 rivals. Chazz, Zane, Aster and Jesse. I feel like only DM and 5Ds had like one solid rival (which is something I like more 2bh). Zexal had 2 in Kite and Shark while ARC-V had 2 in Akaba Reiji and Shingo. I will say, I like Chazz more in the anime. He had more of a character and went through a lot changes. I felt like in the manga, his deck wasn't unique (A dragon deck wasn't original *cough* Seto Kaiba *cough*) and he just didn't really seem to have a personality. Just IMO and I can respect him being a better rival in the manga, though personally season 4 chazz is when he's at his best.

    and that is why manga chazz is better

    So glad this is back, yay!
    I think the problem with Thunder in the anime (and most of its cast, especially the the characters introduced early on) is that the staff maybe didn't know where the series was going at the time and if they did, I believe they only had a very rough draft.
    As the show kept going and more characters started to be introduced, who would contribute much more to the overall narrative they were going for, Manjoume kinda became the "jobber" of the show, someone they could throw at and get credibility right away. It is kinda of a shame and is character was defenitely wasted in the anime, so I'd go with Manga Thunder on this one too.
    Also CNBT as the ending theme assdfgghjjh

    • @YugiohEverything
      @YugiohEverything  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole video is a Jojo reference ;)
      Seriously though you make a lot of good points as always Junior! A lot of the main cast was thrown away throughout the show (Asuka, Sho, BASTION) so it's a shame Manjoume went that route as well. Had he been a bit more serious and not have that tendency to be a jobber to help others get over, as you said, then I think he would have been a really strong rival to Judai!

    • @TheRulersBack18
      @TheRulersBack18 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yea, they basically made ed the rival character, but then largely threw him away for johan, so to your point, manjoume became the jobber. based on how they built up ed and johan (pegasus' comments) i guess it's impossible to expect them to turn them into the jobbers and let manjoume remain the strong rival, but yea

  • @myfaceisstuckpleasesendhel1255
    @myfaceisstuckpleasesendhel1255 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    I think the reason for why Manjoume was written that way in the anime was because he was meant to be a parody of the whole rival character archetype. I heard from somewhere that the Ojamas he used were created as an opposite to Seto Kaibas Blue-Eyes monster. I mean they're both normi monsters that have the same Attribute and are iconic to that character (btw they also have Fusion monster). Blue-Eyes are Level 8 and have high ATK and DEF, while the Ojamas are Level 2 and are frail like tissue paper. After the original series ended I think they wanted to create Zane to be something similar to that of Kaiba, while having Manjoume act as the parody of rival characters to have some variety in its massive cast of characters. Its also a shame that this same kind of rival was tried again in a series that frankly I want to have break from bashing and was done BAAAAAAAAAAADDDDD...Manjoume in the manga does feel like a stronger rival sure, but I think I prefer the anime version simply because making a parody of rivals isn't easy and Manjoume imo deserves to be remembered/praised because of that. 1,100, 1000 Manjoume Thunder/Chazz it up!

    • @YugiohEverything
      @YugiohEverything  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hmm , thats really interesting! If that was there true intention then they succeeded! Manjoume by far is the most unique rival that Yugioh has. Whether that's a good thing or not is up to the person who's viewing , and what they want to see in a rival character!

    I love the anime version because he goes through better character development. He's finding himself, like a lot of high schoolers. Also, he's the only the only rival pre-Vrains to be the younger brother and have a negative relationship with his brothers. I always found that to be a big difference between him and the other rivals and something that I wish you mentioned. He's a lot deeper in the anime than his Duel record, your main focus, suggest.

    Apparently Aoi is getting a major makeover in the manga, with her being the main rival rather than a comic relief/side rival like she is in the anime. Similar to Chazz, who was the main rival in the manga but was mostly tossed aside in favor of Zane in the anime. Just as Aoi was mostly tossed aside in favor of Revolver.
    I hope we see a similar dynamic with anime/manga Aoi that we saw with anime/manga Chazz. With Revolver playing a different role in the manga. That would be interesting.

    I also never understood how people saying you get ahead with your money and family name = lets put my duel spirit away and in the ground. It doesn't even last that long. In the anime Chazz goes from arrogant and only wanting power, to a guy who actually does the right thing, takes action for the benefit of others, and whose ace monster is Ojama Yellow. And while he didn't pick up a win against Jaden in the anime (although you could very much argue that he was going to win their last duel) he did pick up big wins against his brothers with a 0 attack deck and the fate of duel academy on the line, against Don Zaloog a shadow rider (something even Zane couldn't do), he dueled Amnael, he dueled Sartorious, won the GX tournament, and he beat Aster Phoenix. To me, he was always a mix of Joey and Seto Kaiba, and I related to him and liked his deck a lot.

His background story was striking enough, he is the best in junior's cup and also he worked his ass to be who is he and also a lot of things in case

    • @hoanganphanle

      In the manga he does have a bitter taste to Misawa tho, mainly because people keep comparing the two of them, and doubt Manjoume's true skill as a duelist due to Misawa was the best scored student yet was put in Ra Yellow, while Majoume was put in Obelisk Blue. But hell, even Misawa admitted himself that Manjoume was a much better duelist, and personally dismiss those accusation.
      And Light and Darkness Dragon in the manga is dope. It's story is epic, it's appearance is menacing, it's influence is serious, and a mere attack from it early in the manga even weakened the main antagonist. Defenitely a thousand time better than Ojama Trio.

    I feel like the two spirits that Chazz/Manjoume show bigger effects on his character more than anything. Having Light and Darkness dragon who's really strong boosted his power and his pride brought him to who he was in the manga, but in the anime he doesn't run into any spirits until much later and rather than having any Pride he had arrogance.
    I still prefer the anime form because he had really lightened up there as opposed to his manga counterpart who really was more quieter

    There is also a big difference. The Ojama's are really comedic while Light and Darkness dragon is serious. I think that does represent Chazz as a whole. In the anime he is more comedic.
    Everyone always focuses on his personality in the first part of season 1 but he had his more humble persona during the vast majority of GX.

  • @DragonClaw95.
    @DragonClaw95. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Manjoume was a boss in season 2. He loses to Saiou, but after that, he basically starts beating everyone else in Duel Academy aside from Judai. He beats several obelisk blue and ra yellow students including the two guys he always hangs out with which might not sound impressive on paper since none of them were that important, but if you think about how the average duelist would go against them. Then he beats Asuka and Bastion which were good revenge wins for him since they both beat him in season 1, and it's not until the main character duels him when he loses again. Another thing I liked is that usually when a character is brainwashed in Yugioh, they don't regain control until they lose, but Manjoume actually kind of regained his senses even before Judai beat him (I don't know if that happened in the sub, but in the dub, he returned to normal shortly before the end of the duel). It's too bad Manjoume's potential didn't carry over in future seasons. :/

    I like the anime chazz more; simply due to character growth and personality.
    On top of that, while he was played as comic relief, the dude had some of the biggest wins of all in the anime, won the GX tourney, beat Alster, his brother, and so much more. Sadly they just never made him a main ringer or a real rival to Jaden. This can be seen as a good and bad thing, but the dude was winning and got pro with the freaking Ojamas, if that's not a legend idk what is.

    On Anime Manjoume, your analysis on his defeat number is exaggerated.
    As you said, probably "because" he was planned to be the main rival, he had more on-screen duels against Judai/Jaden, but if Alexis or Bastion had to duel Jaden 7 times, you think they would have won, only characters to have ever had the power to beat Jaden are Zane(who took the spotlight as Main Rival to Manjoume very early for me; In fact, when I read the manga, I was surprised to see Manjoume was set up as the main rival, because for me in Anime, it had always been Zane. In fact, before I read manga, I had always consider the "Kaiba" of Jaden was Zane, while Chazz was a failed attempt to be a gx version of Yama Bakura), Aster Phoenix and Austin O'Brien.
    No, for his last duel against Jaden, a "defeat is not a defeat" and Chazz hadn't a "chance" to beat Jaden, he would have "defeated" Jaden, if he hadn't chosen to let Jaden won because he was advised to do that for his career.

  • @bearscolts1

    While I understand why you think of Chazz as a comic relief character in the anime, I would like to defend him a bit. Sure, he had a lot of losses, but a few of those came very early on in the series before he left duel academy and went through a growing phase. He also picked up a pretty good win against Don Zaloog, one of the seven shadow riders. Plus, to be fair, everyone loses to Sartorius except Jaden... finally, I really liked his growth in season 4 as he learned that the life of a professional duelist is not easy and it takes a lot of work to get to the top as well as to maintain your status (as he saw working for Edo). He definitely would have beaten Jaden in their last duel if he was not told to throw it though, so I think that as well as defeating Edo were really good for his character.
    Altogether I can understand why you’d like the manga version better, I did still enjoy him in the anime (especially season 4)

    I love the anime Chazz, he's a loser and maybe thats because I like him. He loses a lot but he keep to stand up. Same with his deck and his dueling, he evolves the strategy over and over untill he find out he can beat(?) Jaden and beat a pro like Edo.
    And the fact he is an unconventional rival make him a lot enjoyable cause he is goofy the most of the time, not like the other serious and boring rival we have in the other series.
    btw sorry for my horrible english lol I love you channel man ;)

    One of those duels in the anime, in episode 60, the ends with no result because Jaden still couldn't see his cards... also I agree his manga counterpart is much better. His deck as well, being able to summon multiple high level dragons consistently and he's less arrogant.

      I think there were 2 no results and 5 losses in the 7 duels iirc! Loved manga Chazz!

    I recently read the GX Manga and loved it the artwork is pretty good and it actually feels like a sequel and continues the plot duel monsters started unlike the anime which does its own thing
