- Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has the distinct honor of being the either cinematic entry in the franchise. Starting with the G1 animated movie, moving through the Michael Bay era up to the new Bumblebee continuity this time is sees the Maximals lead by Optimal Primal and the autobots lead by Optimus Prime take on Unicron and they have to find a key and etc. Anyways, here's our review

I want to praise this movie for not pulling any Ancient Aliens nonsense. Like the Bay movies were obsessed with Transformers influencing human history, building the pyramids, being the illuminati or whatever, but Primal just shuts it down "We can't take credit for human ingenuity." THANK YOU
I like that part. Unfortunately, MCU is also guilty of this with Enternals, where is implied that humans couldn't invent themselves even simplest tools like plugs.

While it would've been easy to have Optimus be the unchanging paragon of righteousness this time around, I kind of like that they pretty much just gave him the character arc that fans of the Bayverse insist that version had.
I like how they answer a somewhat loud question by giving him an arc, “if you care about humans why put your business on their planet?”. And the film answers that he honestly respects human solidarity, but knows that being on earth will only cause trouble, and by the end of the film realizes the “transformative” effect humans have.
I know it’s corny, but the “till all are one” line really means a lot, it includes everything, all beings working together.
I know maybe it wasn’t shined in the best in the most meaningful way. But it’s a step in the direction why humans are important to the transformers story. Because ironically our transformers will find themselves transformed by human action and emotion that will break them away from the hundreds of years at war they were at.

I also think they wanted to have their cake and eat it too by making Primal the prime we expected. still makes me hope we get that Paragon Optimus Prime in the next one, Peter Cullen deserves it.

Transformers Prime, arguably one of the greatest transformers series ever, had Optimus both a righteous leader, and someone who knew how to dissect Cons with his swords. Michael Bay just turned him into a homicidal maniac and thought it was cool
I honestly loved this movie way more than I thought I would. I loved that both noah and Optimus went on the same journey and grew as characters. Not to mention the movie was just fun overall.
Agreed! It has a lot of heart despite being action-packed, and I loved the parallels between Noah's and Optimus Prime's arc!

I’m glad the writers at least tried to address it, would have bothered me to no end if they really tried to say that a garbage truck and a Porsche are equivalent.
My girl and I just assumed that most of the garbage truck was a hologram cause of that being his whole thing. I love how creative Mirage gets with his abilities

I liked this kinda theme they had of Transformers handing down a piece of their power. Instead of Unicron making a buncha zombies, he's actually endowing Scurge with his power. Mirage hands Noah his power.. It's kinda whimsical and fitting, i liked it.
The best thing I think I can say about this movie is that it's exactly what I wish the first live action film had been like way back in 2007. Recognisable but still modern designs, likeable human characters, a varied cast of transformers and a simple plot. I still find bumblebee an overall better movie as I liked charlie a fair bit more than Noah and Optimus is still a little too murderer-ee for my liking. Not to mention the first few minutes on cybertron is probably the best live action transformers we'll ever get.
Also the Gi joe tease kinda made me laugh more than anything but I'm totally game for it. I don't have much love for that franchise but im aware of its history with transformers.

Mm nah, it’s the dark energon that flows through his veins. But him getting bled out in that tag team fight with Noah and Optimus certainly weakened him a lot even more after Mirage fought him.

Actually guys, bumblebee has changed forms twice because, at first he changed into a Jeep. And then he changed into a Volkswagen bug. And then he changed into a Camaro at the end of the movie bumblebee. However, if you count his cybertronian form, then that would be four different changes that he has been through

I was so excited for the GI Joe tease at the end of the movie, a franchise i know all about thanks to Mr Sunday's review of Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins. A timeless movie and equally perfect review.

@@arcrisgonzaga7324 I'm pretty sure the plot of Bumblebee was pretty much the Decepticons trying to hunt down Bumblebee to get Prime's location, and then they had to stop them from beaming the message back to Cybertron once they learned that Optimus was headed for Earth.

The Bumblebee movie didn't have any macguffin. The focus was maily on the chemistry between Charlie Watson and Bumblebee, while Sector 7 worked with the Decepticons Dr. Powell didn't know that the Decepticons could not be trusted. The Decepticons were looking for the location of where Optimus Prime and the Autobots were hiding.
I really like this movie, the plot is simple and weaves character motivations into it in a satisfying way that lets you be invested in both simultaneously. Noah and Prime have very strong motivations and characterization and their parallel character development and progression was my favorite part of the movie
I still think it was such an odd choice to go from Bumble Bee to something that visually feels more Michael Bay than not.
Aside from the cybertron related stuff, the BBM is mostly bayverse inspired designs since it was originally a bayverse movie.
This film doesn't feel bayverse at all, Can any movie have big fights and some explosion without being considered a bay film vibe? This film was a little different, with little human conflict and more Tranformer action, Less over the top city wide destruction more contained battlefield and not filled with exposition after exposition and more time to breathe. There's actually an dilema between humans and autobot where they have to decide to go back to cybertrain or save earth and gives optimus a proper arc. It honestly has heart even if it just teases a whole another crossover espionage to sell toys but whatever. I honestly love this film.
You can actually tell what the fuck is going on though, because the robots are a lot less weirdly proportioned, the fight scenes in this are actually very easy to follow.
Fun fact: This is the first movie to be filmed on location at Machu Picchu and blessed by a Shaman

I just love that they seemingly pulled from several different transformers cartoons from the past.
They pulled from transformers Cybertron with the cyber planet keys and like the jungle planet where the maximals and predicons are from..
They also pulled from all sorts of other little things that I don't have time to type out right now.

Probably because Hasbro owns the Gi Joe franchise, but not the Fast and Furious franchise. Wonder if gobots or the micronauts or whatever else is gonna cross over like the crossover event in the comics. Maybe mlp like that other comic or whatever the fuck.

The reason that GI Joe was included in this movie is because in the last episode of Transformers the animated series Cobra Commander appears. They are also both hasbro properties.
What makes you believe the Joes's next movie villain will be Cobra, given that Cobra aren't the only Joe-villains?
He also didnt appear in the last episode, he appeared mid-season 3 in a really lame episode wherw the Autobots get turned into humans. Easily the best thing about the episode though, Cobraaaaa!
Correct! Cobra Commander appeared in three Joe-movies and two Transformers televised crossover events. However, CC's past appearances doesn't mean he should or will be in the next Joe-project, given the other affiliated villains.
fun little thing, GI Joe and transformers have had intertwined stories in the comics since the late 80s, with cobra even rebuilding megatron in the marvel comic into the way he would appear in Generation 2

The movie is watchable but it is action-hero-trope city central. Pretty much everything i saw in this movie ive seen somewhere else before. Even the whole plot with "young man and his new female friend need to keep this alien artifcat away from the enemies" concept was exactly like the first transformers and probably like at least one of the other sequels that im forgetting about. Its got predicatble deaths and "follow your heart and believe in yourself" dialogue and even a sky beam

Personally I love this movie, this for me is the best live action transformers movie ever made, both Knight and Caple JR have brought the franchise back from the dead because they understand why this franchise was and remains beloved; dynamic characters not humans but the transformers moving forward this franchise is in a good place providing venture stays out creative direction and MBAY never directs or has say over the direction of these movies ever again.
For the last ten minutes of this video, all I could think of was Dan Larson from Secret Galaxy saying "Hasbro: Until All Are One"

Fun fact: the original creators of the Terrorcons had many squabbles over the overall design of the logo in order to differentiate between deceptions and other Transformers, leading to the creators spending weeks in the jungle looking at the feeding and eating habits of jungle creatures. They found that after eating certain plants were consumed, certain apes would pick seeds out and leave the seeds in the same area of the habitat. A few weeks after the 'planting' of these seeds and the gathering of plants and vegetables and the lack of colors that come naturally on planets, it was decided to use the filming title of Blue Harvest while in pre production..

Even though this Optimus is just as aggressive as Bayverse Prime at least this time round they talk about it for a fair bit about why and that he’s experienced so much loss and blames himself for the stranding them on earth that he has a right to be that way.

As much as I don’t care for the Bay movies, I feel like you could make that same argument for Bayverse Optimus. He had pretty good reason to be pissed at Sentinel Prime.
@Adam A. Yes, but the Bay movies never addressed it or confronted Prime about it. This movie is fully aware that Prime is acting out of character and uses Primal as a stand-in for the kind of leader Optimus used to be and has since fallen out of. By the end of the movie Optimus has returned to pretty much his original self again.

The idea of Al-Qaeda in a Transformers movie isn't outside the realm of impossibilities, given the 90s Joe-cartoons.

“It’s transformin time” - Optimus Prime
The line that took me out was when wheeljack pulled up and someone said a throwaway line about his power steering being loose. Wheeljack is a VW Kombi, a south american one so its hard to pinpoint what model year, but it is impossible if not very unlikely that any Minibus of that generation had power steering. Just a dumb gripe that shows the writers aren't car people. Other than that, I enjoyed the film.
This movie felt like it was written by AI, everything was directly out of the big book of cliches. I legit blew an audible raspberry when one plot point was resolved, it was so ridiculous.

In Beast Wars (Called "Beasties" sometimes cuz of some weird censorship I dunno), they invented something called "Stasis Lock", which made Transformers verrrry hard to kill. Basically anything could happen to them, including getting ripped apart, but as long as their onboard AI can initiate "Stasis Lock" their "Spark" won't escape their chassis, which is ultimately what kills a Transformers. When in Stasis Lock a Transformer can't move until they're put back together.
A Transformer can override Stasis Lock in order to keep functioning during a crisis, however doing so they'll risk not being able to initiate Stasis Lock when they need to and if they take too much damage, even if they're in one piece - their Spark will leave their chassis and they die.
It's still pretty arbitrary when their AI can just initiate Stasis Lock. Some Transformers get decapitated and I can't imagine they had a conversation with their onboard AI before the fact but obviously SL was initiated cuz they're put together and fine later.
I haven't seen the movie (YET), but as for the Ape transformer with the surfboard, I know that when the Maximals and Predicons first landed on earth they took on animal forms that looked like the animals on the planet, but later in the series an event happened that gave most of the active Transformers there "Transmetal" bodies. This was obviously Hasbro wanting to sell kids more toys, but the Transmetal bodies were more powerful and they did not look like robots disguised as animals anymore. They were robots who transformed into robotic-looking animals. Optimus Primal's new Transmetal robot form came with a flight mode that included flying around on a surfboard. So maybe that's the inspiration for whatever this new guy is in the movie.
I do hope a movie really explains why it’s hard to kill transformers and why it’s easy sometimes.
I loved this movie. It’s for sure not a prequel though, how can the Autobots crash land between 2007-2010 if we see them all stuck on Earth from 1987-1994. Plus the Unicron things and generally the existence of these characters at all
You can tell they really took into account how well people responded to the BumbleBee movie by *spoiler* ing BumbleBee almost immediately. At least it was a refreshing change from it being Prime, and they even had two Primes this time around so you know it took a lot of restraint.
You're so right. A well made GI Joe shooter with unique combat and characters would do well. I personally want a Hasbro fighting game. Gi Joes, transformers, barbies, all beating each other up. Money on the table Hasbro!
I guess I'll be the first to say it (as someone who LOVES Bumblebee) but 'Bumblebee' is literally Sam and Bee's relationship from the first movie with a different skin and set in the 80's. Also, it has the same problem any of the other movies have, more human than actual Transformer. ROTB has the best blend of both out of all the movies and, apparently, Transformers One is supposed to be ONLY Transformers and coming out next year

The thing about GI Joe is that the movies always focus too much on the ninja and sci-fi stuff. I’d like to see a more grounded team, even if they’re fighting against wild stuff like Toxo-Zombies and Cobra-La.
But GI Joe stories don’t need to be big. Top Gun: Maverick was a perfect GI Joe movie.
I need a GI Joe team that doesn't feel too gritty. We need mismatched uniforms and big personality. You get two or three main Joes, and the rest would just be simple B-rank doods who are defined by uniform/character quirk/one cool specialty, ya know?

@@Undrave , do you have any idea who Joe-Atomic Man is? Atomic Man is Mike Power, the man with handicap issues from birth who had is body parts replaced with mechanical options. Mike's punch, in comics, is said to be strong enough to knockout a cybertronian.
It was a fun movie. More Beast Wars Characters!!!
Fun movie with a fairly simple plot, but man was the experience ruined because some kid was just straight up walking around going through aisles and talking the entire movie 😕.
That ending through completely caught me off guard and I'm very interested to see where they go with it.
When Bumble Bee died I thought that he was going to come back as Gold Bug, like what happened in the G1 cartoons.
We could only dream for Goldbug. Hasbro and Paramount decided to change Bumble Bee to Goldbug for a movie, I hope he's a dope Joe-truck.
Surely a more apt spin-off/crossover would have been MASK. At least that's about transforming vehicles and people firing giant sky lasers out their faces.
They went from like, besides the flashback to cybertron and two bots that die at the beginning of the film, 3 transformers in the first one, nice snd simple. Bumblebee vs. Teo deceptions. What fucking genius decided. Yeah for the next one we have a wholr team of autobots, a dmall team of maximals, going up against a couple bad guys with a bunch of fodder enemies.
My thing is that the Maximals didn't Maximal enough.

It was dissapointing for me. Loved that the Bumblebee movie was so different from all the Bay movies and this movie feels very Bay-ish
The plot is simple, they need to stop the Witness from using the Radial Mast to form a connection with The Veil
Let’s hope the next one can pull off a little better action and more lived in environments. The Bay films do have that on the prequels. Overall pretty damn good Transformers movie. 8.5/10

I liked angry Prime in this. At this point, he’s not the super noble wise leader he becomes. He’s angry at himself for getting the autobots stuck here and for the war and the death of Bee, and he refuses to trust humans. Ironically Primal shows him how humanity is worth defending, which is paid off when Prime comes back to help Noah at the end.
Not necessarily a super deep arc, but compared to the first 5 it’s really nice to see.

Kinda sad that they glossed over who the maximals were.
Trying to somehow shove G.I. Joe into this franchise is going to cause it to fail. Focus on what's actually supposed to be going on within the MAIN continuity. Just because Marvel succeeded (for the most part) in making a connected universe doesn't mean every franchise needs one. Just food for thought.
Hasbro and Paramount aren't focused only on Transformers and G. I. Joe. Hasbro has several IPs that haven't made it pass comics. I understand what you are talking about, given WB's financial movie track record. However, we'll never know who's correct about Hasbro's Cinematic Universe plans (HCU) if they don't try.
That's a fair point actually. I just really hope things turn out for the better rather than potentially hurting several IPs

I definitely think this movie's human dialogue was pretty tense and cheesy. It flows strangely to me. There were times where i kinda rolled my eyes at just how silly and unrealistic the dialogue was, but i honesly got over it. It's a good movie overall, to the point and simple.

While yes this is a "go get the thing" movie, they actually tie character motivations into why they want the thing. You got noah who wants the thing because he doesn't trust that they'll be able to keep it safe so he wants to get rid of it, and then you have prime who has a bunch of reasons why it's really important to him that he wants to get back to cybertron and the key will help him with that
I low-key kind of wish the autobots got to go home. I know that's not that way the story is supposed to go but idk I felt bad for Optimus.
@@cwizard i felt slightly less bad cuz yeah, he really wanted to go home, but that was partly because he felt stranded on earth, now he sees that there are people there to support him

For my money, I think this is the best live action transformers movie, he just gets the feel and tone of what transformers should be right

I don’t like the michale bay light aspects of the movie but I do like the idea of the humans being from GI Joe. Gives the humans something to do hopefully.
The need for death in these films doesn't elevate the stakes or really ever give a satisfying (named character death payoff. Whilst the fight choreography was better (other than the staring in the distance scenes) the deaths just felt to easy. They were like we can defeat them together, but they've been together the whole movie? You lost 2 and now your lust for blood makes you op? I did love the film but it still definitely had problems that I hope can be addressed. Fights need to feel earned when you level your villains so highly, otherwise it doesn't hold any weight imo
Just watched this movie and absolutely loved it. Mirage was probably my favourite character out of them all, I found him to be very funny and entertaining. I was actually sad when I thought the character was going to die.
Loved all the references to the 90s and even references to G1. The tie in to G.I. Joe was definitely a nice callback to the marvel comics. This might mean that the military we see work with the transformers will be the joes.
Could this perhaps be Hasbros attempt to relaunch the joes into live action if so I’m all for it.
My only complaints with the movie were we needed more scenes of the maximals and the Terrorcons. I’d have loved Unicron to have saved scourge somehow at the last minute so we could see him again.
PS this movie made me actually love the maximals. I was never a fan of Beast wars but damn the maximals look so good in live action. I’m definitely gonna get the figures. Xx
Currently my 2nd favorite movie of the year, afyer spiderverse, but it was *very* close. The only thing that pushed it below was the iron man suit at the end. That was a little dumb.
I would have also added one line, when the human was about to destroy the key. He should have brought up that destroying it saves *Every planet* not just earth. Makes it less selfish, and would also be emotinally good. But i suppose were not supposed to think about that😂
Cant express how much i love the terracons being heralds of unicron and pure evil. With the (so powerful hes numb) leader, the brute who barely notices damage, and the sadistic female👌
